Thought I’d try to summarise the pros and cons of the Megaserver from this thread.
I’ve probably left some points out but I tried to skim through every page

Pros:
More people on maps
Cheaper (less servers required)
No “home” server vs overflow issues
Increase in new player retention
Unpopular events can now be completed
No need for server merges

Cons:
More people on maps
Effect on RP
Every map is overflow
Language on EU
Loss of server community/pride
Lack of choice for players who prefer low pop
Increased loading times
Loss of server events eg Temple runs/mining runs/world boss tours
More gold sellers
Guesting can result in player being put back in same map
Guild & WvW recruiting
Guild missions/puzzles etc can be confusing with players spread across maps, different guilds queueing for same event etc
World bosses on strict timetable
Too many players and spell effects at world bosses causing lag/low fps/dc
Difficulty in getting credit at some overcrowded events (particularly for lower level players)
Players beginning to avoid /map and /say.
Lack of proper scaling for events
No option to queue for different megaserver or /join if not in party
Problems reconnecting to same server after frequent disconnects due to zergs

Edited to add reconnection issue.

You forgot one:
Lagging out of events due to Zergs (which is further compounded by the new schedule in part.) Good luck trying to rejoin the instance and get credit.

If you chose the right server, you could before as well. Now everything is a big mish mash, with no choice in how populated someone might want their map.

from https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/the-megaserver-system-guilds-and-the-future

“With the new megaserver system, you’ll find it infinitely easier to play with all of your guildmates—and better yet, someday you’ll simply have one guild!”

4.5 months out and, obviously, this hasnt happened yet. So, some questions. Is there an ETA? Is it a backburner item or something actively being developed.

3 weeks after that news post came a post entitled “The Megaserver Rollout is Complete!” was made with the text explaining “We’re pleased to announce that now all PvE maps and the Heart of the Mists have been moved over to megaserver technology! Although we’re excited that you have more players than ever to explore the open world of Guild Wars 2 with, our work is not yet complete. Our megaserver team will continue to monitor the performance of the technology on live and evaluate your feedback. We will continue to tweak and update the way the system works until it is providing even better megaservice!”

This seems to say that all the main features are live, but tweaking and fine tuning will be ongoing. So, to my first question again, are guild events, boosts etc, going to go across servers any time soon?

If the answer is yes, will influence spent on upgrades (not talking about consumable things) be refunded to the guild when the guild instances are merged and things like multiple identical research upgrades become one?

Well I feel that Megaserver is mostly to blame for the deaths of many guild within the game…

I agree the benefits of the megaserver is great, but it has also caused a lot of issues with the game mechanics for me… Just my opinion.

I’ve expressed my discontent for it already so I won’t go into it again. But Yes I hope ANet will introduce Districts Like in GW1 so I can choose to stay on my “Home Server District” for the majority of my game play and switch to Megaserver mode when I need to (E.G For large events).

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/continued-improvements-to-the-megaserver-system/

Hmmm. Not had chance to read it yet, but this just cropped up on my facebook.

Edit: Just skimmed, the global guild was promised and is now being delivered. Perhaps could have been done sooner, but certainly better late than never. The leaving copy of the map thing is a nice quality of life improvement for those who get caught in the tail end of a megaserver map, so all seems good. The volunteer bonus is a nice little perk. The EU language issue…I appreciate the acknowledgement ofissues, but other than changing the default nature of the language filter, I see no real change. But then I haven’t been adversely affected by other languages, so for me its not an issue to worry about, though I understand some have had issues.

The changes for me a re a great nod in the right direction, but would love to hear more from Anet on certain issues. Not so much specifics, but direction of travel. In particular ensuring that being in the same map as those you are aiming to play with, in both groups and wider. Basically if there are intentions of greater freedom and ease of switching between different instances of the map. That I feel is the change that can make Megaservers a wholly more positive thing. Though that would be my on desires as a roleplayer. Hopefully those can be part of future updates.

Hopefully September Feature Pack includes atleast the reintroduction of Queue system (Since it’s big annoyance to join into a full map copy and have to repeat the same process over and over again, since othervise player cannot get a spot in the map copy, should there be one freed and there are many other players trying to get in too).

Since Reconnect function (to reconnect to last map copy on disconnect or crash) and “district selection” (Propably simply as Home and Mixed settings) are harder to get done.

That was very insightful actually… It highlighted errors that my guild members have reported to me and I didn’t know the answer to… So they both told me what the error is and that they have fixed it lol.

I’m not a fan of the Megaserver and still think that we should have an option to go to “Home Server” district like in GW1… but as long as the megaserver is improving, I suppose i’ll be glad that they are fixing the masses of problems it created in the first place!

As the population on a map changes over time, the megaserver system sometimes needs to close certain copies of that map. It does that by ceasing to add new players to that map (unless they intentionally join to be with their party) and by waiting until that map copy is empty to finally close it. This has occasionally created an odd experience for players left in the map, who will see fewer and fewer companions.
With the September 2014 Feature Pack, we’re introducing a new mechanism to solve this problem. When certain copies of a map need to be closed, the players on those copies will be notified and will have the option to be moved to a different map copy right away. This will help you make sure that there are always allies by your side, and it’ll help us more efficiently manage maps—which in turn makes everyone’s experience better. If you choose to volunteer to move to a new map, you’ll even get a reward in the form of a new effect, the Volunteer’s Blessing, which increases movement speed by 15%, karma gain by 5%, and experience from kills by 10% for 10 minutes.

I guess they noticed players deliberately waiting in a map for the zerg to leave so they could get a more comfortably populated zone to play in, and are now bribing them to leave asap

“We are working on further improvements that are focused on larger guilds.”

I hope that this is a implementation of a queue system added to the Join in feature. I think that this would not only help larger guilds but it would help larger community events in general.

That or a option for the larger guilds to trigger “We want a new instance of this map.”

I don’t know French, German or Spanish. I don’t wanna enter any map instance with >%50 population of these users. It is not racism. It is not hating language. It is just I WANT TO PLAY WITH PEOPLE THAT I CAN COMMUNICATE!

Cheezus! I really wanna ask devs whether they wanna employees in their company who can’t speak/understand English. Hire some employees that you cannot communicate in your company and then come and tell us “we want everyone in the Tower of Babylon. Just see the crowd. You don’t need to understand anyone.”

At least admit your fault instead of telling us stories about “crowded maps filled by players”.

While I do look forward to perhaps being able to do guild missions again (I have not been able to complete a single one since the introduction of the Megaserver), I think they are going in the completely wrong direction with the EU maps. ANet seems very, very out of touch with what their customers want— the EU side has quite clearly shown that no, being able to communicate with the people around you is more important than being surrounded by as many people as possible (that you cannot communicate with at all).

Which makes their statement that they are always listening to our feedback and want to give us the best possible gaming experience ring very, very hollow.

If there’s an option of moving to more populated map, why in the world is there no option of moving to LESS populated map? Leaving a map that was becoming empty was simply a metter of logging out and in. Thats hardly an issue. The problem here is a choice for those who DON’T want to compete with 200 other players to get a kill.

So what if there are 100 people playing all all want to play alone. Does Anet have to spawn 20 servers for them? Because spawning that many servers affects the speed/stability of the system for everyone.

I believe that’s the case actually. I can’t remember where I saw it,. but one of the devs said something about conditions in dungeons. What he said, and I’m paraphrasing here, is that…okay people thought that condition caps could be removed in dungeons because there were only five people. But the dev said that if there were 100 people in different versions of the same dungeon all using conditions, it would be the same as if the 100 people were all in the same room. Something like that.

I was pretty surprised at the time.

It means servers aren’t hard servers, they’re soft servers sharing resources.

There is a hugh difference between “alone” and “without a giant zerg”. Playing with a comfortable amount of players around was perfectly normal before the megaserver and they claimed it’s not all just about saving money (sure!) :P Since many players will choose populated version, it would still be less maps than it used to be with servers.

They could have given at least SOME options for entering map. Like, two kinds of map capacity cap, a bit higher and a bit lower, join preferred. No idea if thats possible, but seems simple enough. Just any (insert a curseword) option. Instead they keep ignoring the overpopulation problem and try to push us to even more crowds…

Can someone give me some clarification about the global guild thing? In fact this is something I’ve been waiting for since they said they’re working on it earlier this year and what I’ve read pleases me a lot.
The only thing I’m not sure after reading the anouncment ist- will I now be able to participate in Guild Missions without having to Guest on the world where the missions were build (hope I won’t have to anymore) and will I now be able to actually see the objectives in the respective guild menu?

Geez. Is it too hard to understand that WE WANT TO PLAY WITH PLAYERS THAT WE CAN COMMUNICATE!

Have you tried using the chat filter options to filter out (most of) the non-english chat? Personally, I have yet to find a map where this really is a problem. If there is a large group of french (or spanish) people around chatting in map-chat, I just leave them in peace. If I meet a player talking a language that I don’t know, I’ve always figured out ways to communicate without language. It really isn’t that hard if you give it a try.

Personally, I really love the fact that you are not forced into a language-specific community. I have two accounts on EU, one on a DE server and one on an international server, and both accounts are in two guilds, a german one and an english-speaking one. I even have my clients set to german or english depending on mood, content I’m playing, and whether or not my daughters are watching (they don’t understand much english). Aside from me mistakenly mixing up guild representation and talking on the guild channel in the wrong language, it really is no problem at all to switch between accounts and guild representation and enjoy the game, even if I come across people that don’t speak any language I understand.

So I, personally, am a big fan of the fact that they do not implement hard language barriers, and I’m not the only one. In fact, I know a lot of german players that feel just as at home in german-language as in english-language communities (and a few that even like to play the game in french or spanish), and our gameplay is enriched by the fact that megaserver gives us access to all of these international communities in the EU.

Another big problem that is not being given with Mega-Excess.
WvsWvsW … is going to unify guilds from areas and such … to have everything unified … well, now thanks to the Mega-Excess, we can recruit hosted players anywhere … imagine the guild “Mega-Excess” dedicated only to WvsWvsW, formed by “Jades”, “Vizunas” and “Pikens” everyone could talk on the chat map with Jade, Vizuna and Piken respectively, but both could be coordinated by the chat clan to kick kitten to other worlds for example … you could say Baruch. Thanks to MegaExceso, this is now possible. We have a faked championship.

In short … on paper is all very nice, but have not been taken in mind all the implications, please transmitted to the team that there is nothing dishonorable to admit that this does not work, we’re tired, everything has a limit .

If I meet a player talking a language that I don’t know, I’ve always figured out ways to communicate without language. It really isn’t that hard if you give it a try.

Firstly, filtering does not solve the problem of playing with people I can communicate. As I said in my post, which you just cut only one sentence, if a map has more than %50 of dark language users; filtering just makes me a stranger in the giant zerg. The problem is not “leaving x language users in peace” also. I obviously leave them in peace because I CAN’T SPEAK/WRITE/UNDERSTAND their language. I don’t wanna do extra work for communication. I don’t wanna be friends with people that I can’t communicate. So, why does MEGACRAP have to match me with such communities?(As a side note, I am not a native English user).

Personally, I really love the fact that you are not forced into a language-specific community. I have two accounts on EU, one on a DE server and one on an international server, and both accounts are in two guilds, a german one and an english-speaking one. It is your choice. IT SHOULD BE PLAYERS CHOICE. I don’t wanna play with german speakers in my Lion Arch map. I don’t wanna play with french speakers in my Bloodtide Coast map (I have more than 10 failed attempts with this community also lel). Before this STILL AND WILL BE BROKEN megacrap, I had to endure those communities only in overflows and those overflows were temporary. Now, ANet forces me to play with them in every possible time without any chance for me to escape.

So I, personally, am a big fan of the fact that they do not implement hard language barriers, and I’m not the only one. Good for you. You and I had our choices before megacrap anyways. Now, you are still happy but ANet made me rage with a real stupid argument.

Maybe the game should have an open world selection process where you can select if you are rping, eventing, exploring ect.. and it could have a sorting system that puts you with people who are selected in each different category something like that maybe would be good for the player base I would think but not sure if it is too much to ask for

(see above for post)

I get it, you don’t care for the way the game currently matches players on maps, but please accept that I, and a lot of other people, actually enjoy the way it works now a lot more than the way it worked before.

You don’t like to play with some people the game puts you on a map with, and I’m sure that most if not all players around have people they don’t care to be on a map with, either. Some people don’t enjoy seeing people that don’t speak their language, others hate on people that do speak their language but simply refuse to communicate at all. Some people don’t like having “noobs” around that play events in a (perceived) non-optimal way, others would rather not have people around at all. It’s not just the language, there’s a multitude of reasons why people don’t like other people around, and they still deal with it.

Personally, I don’t care for people that try to force their preferences on other players, or try to give their own opinion more weight by shouting in all caps or inventing/using derogatory terms for things other people enjoy but they don’t. You get them in forums, as well as in map chats all over the game. Should I go demand of Arena Net that they change their mega server algorithm so all people that have been known to use ingame chat (or forums?) that way are put on different maps than me? What about other people, who like to play with “people like them” just as well as “people like me”? Is it fair of me to demand it so they have to go out of their way to choose one of the two available communities each time they want to play, just so that I have things my way?

I like the way the mega server is implemented, and I find it vastly superior to the server map implementation we had prior to 4/15. I couldn’t play my way before, I either had to choose which “community” to play with each time I logged in a character (and playing with friends was always a hassle because someone would surely forget to guest on switching characters) and being restricted to three server communities a day due to guesting restrictions, or had to accept that each account was pretty much confined to their home server community (plus the occasional overflow that had a lot more inter-language conflicts than I’ve ever seen on the megaserver).

Bottom line: I understand that the way megaserver matches players is not always optimal for each individual player, and if you have objections to the way it works, say so. But please accept that there are just as many players who see things differently, and that sometimes you may just have to deal with it instead of dismissing everybody else’s opinion as inferior to yours.

They seem content catering to the ‘random-blobby-pseudo-mass’ that Megaserver creates and cutting their ties with all the players who just don’t enjoy the game as much due to the change.

A high population of a map when there is no world boss active is kinda OK since people will be spread out. (Although all maps are overpopulated in my opinion) But during world bosses everyone is concentrated on one spot which causes the events to be ridiculously boring.

How about temporarily lowering the population limit on maps that are created within 15 minutes of a world boss spawning? That way you could keep the high population of maps for exploring but still get an acceptable number at the bosses. Once the boss is dead the limit can be increased again. Might not be a good idea for Tequatl and three headed wurm since they actually require a lot of people, but every other boss would be a lot more fun with less than half of the current number.

I can’t speak for Phoenixlin but I don’t think that most of the people posting are calling your opinion inferior… but there are lots of people who the megaserver is not working well for… for a variety of different reasons. We are just trying to have our voices and concerns heard by Arenanet. I am glad megaservers are working out so well for you and I would hope that any fixes that help those of us having issues would not negatively affect the way you play the game. But please understand that the megaserver has very negatively affected gameplay for a vast number of players.

I know this thread has been dormant for a while, but I wanted to add some thoughts regarding this year’s Mad King’s Labyrinth… If the labyrinth is using the megaserver system… why are the maps so much more empty than they were last year. Doesn’t the megaserver try to fill the maps as much as possible? They never seem to close because of low population, like regular maps do but seem to stop filling with people.

Why would you not do the megaserver behavior that I dislike on most maps… on maps that you would actually benefit from being a larger number of people grouped together.

It is like Arenanet is doing the exact opposite of what I want regarding maps…. Mad King’s Labyrinth is one of the few places I would want a lot of people to be put together and it doesn’t do it… yet on most maps I don’t want that to happen and it does it all the time.

Am I missing something here or does everything seem backwards?

It seems they lower the max number of players for labyrinth.
It’s about 30 instead of 150 like normal maps.

I was hoping this would work itself out, but it hasn’t, so I would like to mention it.

There are several events in the world boss lineup in particular that it’s nearly impossible to get credit for if you even blink. I have done Maw more often than many others, so I’ll focus on the pre-events for it (Svanir Shaman world boss in Wayfarer Foothills).

Grawl attack Krenneck’s Homestead, protect Scholar Brogun, dragon totem, Defeat the shamans, and close the portals are the events that lead up to the spawn of Maw. All of these should scale according to the number of players in the area. With mobs being weaker due to the trait changes, these guys die in a couple of shots from a level 80, and I’m lucky if I get credit for bronze participation. Spawn more grawl, more help, more portals, and make the totem have significantly more health (when the group demands it). I mean, if you blink, you will miss the dragon totem event. I was shocked to discover that killing the shamans he summoned was an event of its own when I lucked into it one day.

There are many escort events that don’t seem to scale with the crowd at all, and it’s frustrating to miss an event because of the sheer amount of people present. It makes it feel like games with tagging, to be honest, because it’s another kind of competition for kills, instead of cooperation.

This still hasn’t been addressed.

Same goes for Fire Elemental. It’s not only frustrating to not get rewarded, it’s dull to wait a solid minute before a single enemy spawns nearby.

And what about Orr? An average wave of Melandru trash dies as soon as it becomes vulnerable. You just have to camp and wait for the split-second moment when you have to unleash ALL THE AOE. Laughable. I daresay that a 10th lvl player could survive among the zerg and even take some part in looting, if in party.

I think part of the issue is that with skills being so restricted at earlier levels, there’s a more distinct power creep than there was when the game first started. Level scaling doesn’t create that same level plane it did previously. When I started playing, if I went to a lower level zone as a level 80, I really wasn’t that much more effective at murdering things than a level-appropriate character. Given the way traits have been moved and destroyed, as well as weapon, skill, and downed unlocks all being level-gated, the discrepancy is more noticeable than ever. So part of it is that the events aren’t scaling to the crowds megaservers have created, but another part is that a lower level character simply can’t compete with a whole mess of level 80 characters doing the same event.

Well maybe the limit is 30 but most of the time I went there (and didn’t get a taxi) there were 2-3 people on the map no where even close to 30… doesn’t seem like it is working.

Is this a form of Necrophilia?

I have NEVER done a World Boss and not gotten credit. You are doing something wrong and Megaserver is not to blame.

I will concede that getting some Events to give credit due to huge mobs (especially since the Daily changes), can be frustrating, but it’s not like other Events on the map don’t exist.

Re-read the post. He was complaining about not getting full credit for participating in the pre-events. I’ve seen this plenty of times in that Maw event he was talking about. You have to throw up an AoE right as the spawn is about to happen, and even then you might luck into Bronze-level participation because everyone else around you is doing the same thing. It’s kind of frustrating. Some of these bosses are laughably easy. Fire elemental is a prime example. If the run is going horribly he’ll drop AoE fire on the stack and I’ll have to dodge once. The event consists of killing mobs that spawn near the golem (they don’t stay up long) for about five minutes before the elemental finally spawns. At that point it’s pew pew for 20 seconds and collect the chest. This isn’t compelling game play.
