Currently almost all maps are Megaservers and with that using Way Points is a pain because allmost all WPs are contested if you want to change the map. To reach you point you need to pay an extra cost of 1.58s or run your way there. I wont give any comments to this but the currenty situation with the WPs looks like broken.

The overfew of the events like Lyssa, Balthazar … is not that good. Even on the first days you knew that there was a timer to spawn on the Boss and came back after like 1h30 mins. Currently you dont know what megaserver you are in. What the timer is and….

Sure 3 Bosses have now fixed timers like Karka but what is with the other bosses. And then, just 3 spawn times with a window of 15 mins is not the best solution.

Hi my dear Anet!!!! need more evidence that megaserver was bad idea???? forget the megaserver, it is quite simple: “we were wrong, sorry. We will back to the previous server method”.
Think of the players (customers) and dont destroy the game

What about those players that have been complaining about empty maps for almost two years then?
Should they not think of them? Why are you more important than those people?

Question is: Am I less important? I play on a low-populated server and you could guest if you wanted more people around. I’m not totaly against the mega-server but your argument goes in both directions.

This is the last time I’m gonna answer a troll like you.

Because if someone didn’t like being on a “dead” server they could transfer to a high population server. Tell me, NOW, how are people supposed to transfer to a low population server if they don’t like being around THIS many people. Oh wait, ya can’t. You’re now STUCK with being around 1,000,000 people per map, whether you like it or not…

THANKS ANET

Now, why don’t you go troll in game, wait, I’ll bet you already are one of the in game trolls too. Never-mind.

I’ve read a few more posts in defence of megaservers and it seems that people from low population servers are more positive. Bear in mind, however, that not all megaserver instances are equal. If the same things happened on all of them and it was just a matter of getting a spot on the team, then it wouldn’t be as bad.

Last night I was in a French-speaking zerg in Orr with a cmd issuing orders in German. I left the map and entered again, only to find that the places we had targeted suddenly were uncontested. I was in another instance/shard/megaserver.
Just now I was in a large mainly English-speaking group working their way up the Promenade of the Gods when my client crashed. After logging in I was in French territory and all the waypoints hade been liberated.

I spend most of my time nowadays, after my dailies are finished, fighting thisTower of Babel Syndrome and when I find a map where people speak my language I just wait until a boss or an event pops up. Juggling the shards to find one with active events isn’t worth it, because I risk ending up in a disorganised chaos instead. It’s slower than ever before, I gain less and I very rarely run into someone I know.

Again, the megaserver removed some of the best parts of this game and the fact that there are more people in low level areas really isn’t worth that much. In fact, my newest character gets less major things done now because they finish so quickly he often can’t get there in time. I also think new players learn less about tactics and skills when most things are done with a large group unleashing everything they’ve got on the mobs.

People have also been asking for a possibility to choose shards – to have them numbered, or something. Wouldn’t that just mean that huge zerg guilds would teleport in to clear bosses and port out again, thereby forcing the “natives” to wait for the event to pop up again?

One man’s clever sig is most likely another man’s property.
And you may quote me on that.

Here’s a thought: find a fix for those poor people while not messing up the game for everyone else.

Alright, give us a solution like that.
How would it work so that both sides would be content?

What about merging servers with the lowest population together first to reach a decent ammount of people instead of merging everyone randomly?

Just saying.

Because of WvW.
In order to merge servers in GW2 currently you need to merge them three at a time.
What if there isn’t three servers that have that little population? Or what if one of the servers is a German server?

And the fact remains that even those very high servers still had plenty of more or less empty areas, merging servers wouldn’t really address that issue

Question is: Am I less important? I play on a low-populated server and you could guest if you wanted more people around. I’m not totaly against the mega-server but your argument goes in both directions.

Of course not.
But that is the issue. Who are we to decide which group is more important?

Megaserving the lowest populated servers together while leaving the most populated ones alone would solve everything. The ones complaining about empty maps would be served with plenty of laggy/full of random people maps, and the most populated servers would be left quiet and have no big change. Besides, megaserver = server merging, just without the WvW, so no need to play on the words.

Still willing to defend the megaserver? Check my attachment. I’ve a high-end computer, and I was still below the 5FPS because the screen was full of green names and special effects. Yeah, it definitely improved the game and its gameplay.

EDIT: I won’t even mention that it seemed like I fell into a german shard of the megaserver when I come from an international server with english as main language, showing how the sorting is wonderful.

Here’s a thought: find a fix for those poor people while not messing up the game for everyone else.

Alright, give us a solution like that.
How would it work so that both sides would be content?

Here’s a really simple one: making participation on megaserver instances optional, leaving everything else completely as it was before, taking nothing away from anyone.

Making everyone play on the equivalent of what we formerly knew as ‘overflow servers’ is rather daft. And in my experience so far, there’s nothing to differentiate megaservers from overflow servers. None of the criteria designed to make megaservers keep people that used to happily play together still play together seem to work, at all. It feels as if they just lowered the cap for regular server instances to 0, automatically throwing everyone into random overflows without any thoughtful consideration at all. I have seen or heard nothing so far to prove otherwise, other than blog posts that fail to live up to reality.

so after almost 2 weeks of Megaservers my conclusion: I LOVE MEGASERVERS SO MUCH!!! People everywhere, it’s pure joy! But…my big love and my most enjoyable and fun part in that game is totally broken now. Haven’t killed Tequatl one single time – it’s always a big fail since the introduction of Megaservers :-(

I haven’t read this whole topic but I have just 1 thing to say about these megaservers…
ArenaNet please… REVERT THIS.

There’s absolutely no point of these megaservers cough overflows *cough & it “only” ruined every PvE except dungeons.

Sure it might be nice to see people everywhere but I don’t mind not seeing a lot of people in maps. It doesn’t mean the game is dead at all because most players just don’t go there (they’re either in cities, dungeons, wvw, pvp, doing world bosses) because there’s no reason to go there after they completed the map.

Give players a reason to go back to maps/do (group) events and we’d see a lot more people everywhere.

Whenever I log on, there’s an entirely new set of people around. I’m playing with a bunch of people, I log out, and when I come back after a few minutes, they’re all gone. My favourite faces from the past are nowhere to be seen… the zone chat is full of unknown names. It’s like some cursed invasion of the body snatchers: everybody’s been replaced overnight.

That person thinks it’s a bad idea and says that it’s going to destroy the game. There are plenty here who disagree with that opinion. It’s an MMO I want to see Massive amounts of players. Perhaps everyone does not, but then don’t they want an MO and not an MMO?

Seems to be just as many people who are for Mega Servers then those against the idea of them. AN will know the true metrics on this. I want improvements to the system for sure, but I don’t want it to go away.

70% of the people I see in game seem to greatly dislike it, 20% doesn’t care and 10% actually likes it.

I do see the positive side of these megaservers. More people in other cities, maps, lower lvl events… But then a gain, this could be fixed in a much easier way.

Players either want a comment on every post or won’t be statisfied and I don’t want any arguments going ‘’if they just had one comment explaining’’, players will react negativly whatever Anet does.

They may as well be silent and let the players complain cause they complain anyhow.

You know the opposite end of this spectrum exists too, right?

There are players on here who think that Anet could do no evil, applauding everything and anything they do. Anet could convert all of their gold into bowls of chocolate cherry frosting, delete all of their characters, and transfer their account to the Arctic Circle.
They would then post on these forums about how they deserved it.

snip..

Why on earth did you write this? You haven’t acknowledged our feedback in your official thread even once in two weeks. There are over 1000 posts saying that we hate the new system. There are posts telling you ways to make it better, there are posts telling you to remove it until you fix it, there are posts telling you why it is broken. AND YOU NEVER RESPONDED TO ANY OF IT! Why would you write you are listening to our feedback? You clearly aren’t as you rolled it out to all maps (which we already noticed earlier this week). You said it would be a slow rollout. How do you consider that slow?

Sure some people like the change. I won’t deny that there have been a few posts regarding that. But the overwhelming amount of posts, and in game feedback is negative. And yet you plunge ahead and ignore us. You tear communities apart and then ignore us. I refuse to spend another penny in support of this company until you start leveling with us. Your blatant ignoring of the problem/ upset customers is atrocious. I encourage anyone who dislikes this change to withhold any spending of money on gems until this company actually talks with us and tries to be reasonable. You shouldn’t stop playing the game, since you playing for free can arguably hinder them as much as you not playing at all.

Your PR actions here are completely unacceptable. I’m not asking for the system to be perfect, I’m asking for you to actually be transparent, and communicate with us. I am severely disappointed with the way this company is handling this change, and all the respect I garnered for you over the years as a loyal customer has been destroyed.

I completely agree 100%

There were concerns before the changes were brought in, there have been plenty of complaints since. They haven’t listened (it seems) to any of the criticisms at all. As you pointed out, even with the criticisms they rolled it out to all servers within a little more than a week, when they had made it sound like it was something that would happen over the course of the year.

There was a trait thread were a troll was allowed to troll the thread for days, They decided to delete all posts related to it only days after. Their excuse was that they stopped monitoring the thread because it was going a long so smoothly. Sorry but that is BS. It shows (to me) that they have lumped these threads together so they can be ignored. How else can they explain not seeing the trolling that was going on? They were ignoring the thread and that is why they didn’t see it. They don’t want bad press but losing customers and making them unhappy and ignoring them is ok? This isn’t talking about moderation, this relates to them not seeing that the thread needed editing because they were not reading it.

I’m in the process of maxing a Ranger and a Guardian. Before the patch I was planning to buy all the trans stones/charges I needed to make sure that they both had the look that I wanted right the way through their lvl 1 to 80 journey (how my toon looks is important to me). Even with the now increased price of under -lvl 80 transmutation I was still willing to give them my money. This would have been a lot of money (for me) as I would have been changing their look every 8-10 levels (ish) and also because I like them to have at least two sets of ‘clothes’ (1 set for the cold area’s and the other for everywhere else :P) I’m not gonna do the math but that’s 2 sets of armour every 10 levels for 2 characters.

Also before this patch I was really really hoping they would release more weapon/armour skins in the gem shop because I would have bought any I liked, because I like to dress my toon in what I like but also because I was really impressed with this game, for many reasons, the lack of grind, the amazing structure of the design in maps that give gorgeous visuals (the maps don’t just seem thrown together), so I really wanted to support them, to show my appreciation, and ‘to pay my way’ in a game that is F2P.

Now I won’t be spending 1 penny until this is changed. This is my protest. I know it’s gonna hurt me more than them (as I am only one person), I’ll lose even more enjoyment from this game, more than the silly new trait system and the new MS have already taken from my game.

I’m still trying to play the game but when each and every event is nothing more than tapping the ‘1’ button (because there’s too many people), I’m enjoying the game less and less.

I don’t think he even implied to merge ALL low pop servers together. If done correctly it will create decently populated servers that even people who specifically chose low pop servers for the sake of low pop -either for more solitary game play or out of empathy for their trusty computer- can be satisfied with. But as it stands now, we are all being thrown in zerg-fests and lag-fests that now even rob people of potential xp, gold, and karma (events KO’d before you can put in sufficient damage to get a gold medal rating out of them).

This is not my experience. I have entered all sorts of maps meeting the people I am used to. Give it time to get better, as I am sure this is not the “end product”, and surely will keep evolving as the game does.

Which begs the question: Why did ANet break their own promise of rolling this out slowly? The general gist I understood from that decision was to observe and analyze in only just a few select maps, for example, a few chosen low pop maps with specifically chosen high pop maps. That way they could have observed and collected data on how their code is handling the workload and how the results shape up to be on the two ends of the spectrum. Then tweak, fix, and improve accordingly. Then slowly dishing it out to other maps, collecting more data and tweaking the code as they go.

Instead they prematurely rolled it for all Tyria out in less than two weeks, barely giving themselves enough time to collect all the necesary data. And lo and behold, the megaserver code doesn’t even sort people out correctly by the conditional priorities they stated. We have the Tower Of Babel Syndrome. Guilds find themselves more often ferrying their members, and spending more time doing so, to start events than before. People within parties are more often separated. We have exageratted amounts of lag fests and zerg fests that are more detrimental to the players than beneficial. I really do wonder why ANet didn’t take their time like they said they would? They went so far as to say that before the end of the year is when we will be certain megaservers will be all out throughtout Tyria. They had the rest of 2014. What changed?

Summary: Yes, this is most definitely not the end product, it doesn’t even do what it was supposed to in too many occassions. And this could have been better handled had they stuck to their guns and rolled it out periodically taking their time. But they didn’t. It came prematurely all over the board of Tyria.

PS: Of course we’ll have to wait and see how they fix it. We are basically their beta-testers. Despite the upset expressed by many people here I think it is safe to assume that most of here understand that all we can do now, after giving them feedback, is wait and see.

For those calling for a merge instead of MegaServers that would not solve the problem. It would also not be future proofing PvE. This way they only have to take action once. Not years down the line when the population dies down. There are some maps that did not even have a comfortable population level on the highest populated servers. So transferring to a high population server would not
work to solve that problem. Neither would guesting.

What if they needed to roll it out to all the servers to collect the necessary data to do the proper tweaking. There are a few people on Tarnished Coast saying that Devenity’s Reach is better for them now. That would not have been possible unless they rolled it out to Devenity’s Reach

I am of Tarnished Coast, and I experienced quite the opposite. There are more trolls now. Trolls that prey on RPers. TC was chosen by RPers to be a relatively safe RP hub. So these TC members most definitely do not speak for me when more of my time is imposed upon by trolls.

And I can’t think of anything that would reasonably explain that a workload they foresaw and projected would take the rest of 2014 to complete would remarkably be done in less than two weeks. Suddenly all the data they projected would take months to collect got obtained in 10 days? Okaaayyy.

I do know that they will keep fixing this (not like they can allow something this massive go unchecked). But the whole takesies-backsies is … wierd.

Fixing the Megaserver code to be more consistent and effective in priority sorting would be a step in the right direction to solve most of the issues people presented. Adding an interface that allows people to tell the code which conditions for sorting take precedence (Check mark boxes for RP, Server, Language, ect.) would be a great boon to the system as it gives players the power to refine their gaming experience.

Megaserver system is a partial success and a partial failure: Not everyone is happy to have “megazergs” on most maps, the problem with many major events, event chains that those won’t scale up to a 100 players, challenge killed. It’s just a mindless massacre of dumb AI for what ? Loot ? No, no loot left, you can’t tag up enough mobs or do enough damage to them to get the proper amount of drops .
I liked the old system a lot more, challenging open world PVE, space for solo and group roaming. Now at Orr temples there are 100s of players, we used to do Grenth with 6 people around , those were epic battles, now it’s just a constant blob mess.
I’d just opt out of this Megaserver, but it would not make any sense.

I LIKE MEGA SERVERS… KEEP IT ANET!.. THANKS! Im sure majority of players are out there enjoying it instead of complaining on these forums..

Ah, yes…. The old “everybody who isn’t saying anything agrees with me” approach. Love it. Of course, we could also assert that most players hate it, and just can’t be bothered to complain here when there’s already 29 pages of comments.

Businesses are about being cost-effective. Which would you think is a better use of resources?

  • Featuring existing large-scale content using existing models and scenery that herds of players will utilize at once, by loading the game’s better rewards into that content to encourage doing it over and over again.
  • Designing new content that will often be done only in small groups, and that requires new models and scenery. In order to infuse longevity into this type of content, you’ll also need to figure out and balance new reward schemes.
  • Designing new areas with tons of things to do and see that people will explore a few times, then ignore.
  • Designing harder content that will be done once or not at all by x% of players, and which will be repeated only by y%, where x > y by a significant factor.

It has been said on these forums many times that people will take the path of least resistance. Companies are kind of like people. They will take the path that leads to more profit with less expense. Consider that revenue in MMO’s (store or sub) are improved via larger numbers of players. The path of maximum profit is to keep those numbers up via the most cost-effective means.

As to mega-servers — those are about appearances. GW2 was always supposed to be about large groups of players doing content in the persistent world. Empty zones kill MMO’s.

I have a one word question: Districts?

Pulldown menu:
America Megaserver – 01
America Megaserver – 02
[Homeworld] Server – 01
Guested Server – 01 [Servername] (if selected)
Guested Server – 02 [Servername] (if selected)

International Megaserver and European Megaserver could be added to the pulldown menu if you ever merge the whole game globally like GWs.

p.s. I would pay at least 300 Gems for an in game item that when clicked would tell/show me where the next World Boss is going to spawn and a countdown timer, something most likely of asuran handywork.

Ahah if anyone missed it someone made an awesome satire thread pretty much nailing everything ANet is doing wrong with this system.

Of course it was promptly deleted by a moderator.

Reddit isn’t letting anyone really post about megaservers either.

This whole thing is a god kitten sham.

I overall like the idea of the megaservers, but I feel sorry for RPers. Personally, I think it’s cool to see RPers running around—it livens up the world. But I’ve also seen a lot of hate thrown at them—so much so I felt like posting here.

I’m not personally an RPer (although seeing RPers has made me want to try it out), but I feel like there needs to be some tool for them to RP safely, without people bashing them. I think some people previously mentioned some ideas, like having a check-markable megaserver preference for RP. Even something simple like an another chat channel specifically for RP /say and /e I think would prevent a lot of the bashing because it wouldn’t be in the face of non-RPers (assuming they didn’t have that chat channel turned on).

Guild Wars 2 has rich lore, amazing worlds, and interesting races; it’s the RPers who appreciate that the most. I feel like they should at least be given tools to help them weave their stories in peace and security.

I like the whole megaserver idea, it just needs to be toned down a bit. Before most of the world was empty, so kudos to Anet for making the world feel alive again. The lagspikes however I could do without. In the Heart of the Mists there are just too many people. I think they need to reduce the number of people per map for standard PvE. It’s really close to unplayable at times. Maybe I’m remembering launch too fondly, but I can’t remember ever being lagged like in the last couple of weeks before.
I’m not sure if it happens when a new instance is being created, or what is going on exactly, I just hope they fix the issues.

I agree with this comment. Make the MegaServers an option.
Now we can’t do Guild Missions anymore, the MAP is always FULL!!!!

There should be a separated map then, for the guild only.
A new permission in the Guild Ranks, to activate the Guild Activities, and when activated, it would appear the same screen as when entering a Dungeon, for every guild member on the map.

You should also increase the “hidden” cap from the maps, to allow more of the group/guildies to appear at the same map.
Now it is really hard to find old friends… and this is the OPPOSITE intention… It was stated we would still play with our friends and guildies and party. But this is not happening.

It is a shame! :/

I love the megaserver idea, but it needs to be better developed.

This is MADNESS!!!

Ok so now I have played for over a week and I can absolutely say Megaservers have alot more pros than cons. Even so, it’s a great feature for newbies. The game feels alot more alive and wherever I go there’s always someone there.

But this is my major dislikes about the Megaserver.

Nodes
I can’t longer farm my orichalcum ore and ancient wood and since I’m limited to around 50 per character per day I find it not worth it at all. I’m satisfied about nodes being randomized but make it same location on every mapversion.

MEGA-Bosses
Organized zergs is no longer existing. I play on Desolation and we killed Tequatl every time it spawned before Megaserver. Today I gave it a chance and we killed him at 10 sec left on timer. It’s now all about luck and not organisation.

We had a little community on Desolation and it was a joyful moment with people chattering about whatnot in mapchat along with the standard strategies. Now it’s a hateful chat with people calling each other words. It’s chaos. I don’t know but I don’t feel like adding 150 people from old-Desolation to friends and then to get on a mapversion and then kill Teq since in my guild we don’t do worldbosses together. If Megaservers ain’t getting a big change regarding this. Zerg bosses like Tequatl and Jungle Wurm can’t work. Instead create instanced mega-bosses.

I noticed that even if my friends and I are in the same squad we are not getting placed into the same map when we chose to travel to the same area. No one is sure which name to right click on and join party anymore. It delays our ability to accomplish our guild bounties, puzzles and any other timed guild event. I love the idea of the megaserver, I just wish it actually worked like it did in thought. Thanks for everything else though !!

So far I’ve been giving megaserver a shot and must say, I don’t care much for it. I can never catch events cause they are ALWAYS completed, guild events are a major pain because of the wait. I’m not saying scrap the whole idea, even though I would be fine with that, but there are TOO many people, I was getting unhappy with my server to some extent because we suddenly had a huge influx of people before megaserver but now, I see at least 3x that number and am even less happy but guess what? A server transfer will no longer help. At the very least though the megaserver needs massive improvements.
1. There is no reason for cities to be on megaserver, I like having at least some feeling of community, now it’s different people every time and if I’m lucky I’ll be in the same one as my friends.
2. Cities aside, there are too many people. A boost to the player population in most the areas is fine, but now there are just too many. Every time I go to do a heart or event often times I have a hard time of it cause there are so many people there trying to do the same thing, and it isn’t just a group that happens to be at the place I want to be, it’s like that everywhere all the time.
3. Though this kinda ties in with the no need for it in cities, I no longer have a sense of community unless I go into wvw. I like hanging out with those from my server, but I don’t always want to wvw.
4. Guild missions are now a major pain.. Used to we would have to wait on another guild occasionally but now.. well it’s always a wait, every bounty being killed, every puzzle being done, every challenge in progress, all with lines of other guilds waiting to do them. I’m sure there are many things that could be done about this, and i hope you come up with a workable method of fixing the issue soon cause it almost makes me want to just skip the guild missions.
5. Ok, I’ll admit this one is completely personal preferance, agree or disagree as you wish I don’t care. If I wanted to be in high population areas I would have moved to a higher population server. As I stated earlier, a month or slightly more ago my server seemed to double im population. I was unhappy with it cause I felt there were then too many people, well annoying as it is if it bothered me that much I could transfer to a lower pop server. Now though I’m stuck with terribly overpopulated zones.

I will admit it’s nice to be able to run into old friends that swapped servers, even though this comment might make it seem so, I’m not completely against it, I know there is a need on other servers for something like this. Mostly I think many of the current issues would be solved by making the population limit lower on current megaserver maps, but still of course leaving a good boost of players.

I’ve read numerous pages and I agree with nearly everything people have to say that is problematic with the MegaServer.

One point that I didn’t see mention was the long loading times. This might be a personal issue of mine but zoning into a zone never took longer than about 20 seconds with the exception of old Lion’s Arch. Zoning into certain maps take me over a minute (upwards to two minutes) to load. This has never happened before. Last night for example, I was zoning into Blazeridge Steppes to kill The Shatterer. I was stuck in the loading screen for nearly two minutes. Shatterer was nearly dead by the time I loaded in. The community character model limit is already low and graphics-wise, I should not have to put them to the point where I am playing a game from Sega Genesis. I realize that this might not be a universal issue but ever since the MegaServer patch, loading times for nearly every zone have been increased. I also realize that this is a minor issue at best but it is still relatively frustrating considering what I was used to.

It’s not just you and it’s not a minor issue. With the way this game works 2+ minute loads (some people have said 4-5 minutes of models loading after they WP’ed as well) basically means you missed whatever you wanted to participate in.

I was iffy on the megaserver thing until yesterday. Went to Ulgoth, playing my guardian traited for damage, ascended weapons, food buffs for extra power. Attack first champ dog, no loot. Second dog, no loot. Third dog, same. Used to get champ bags from these. Attack Ulgoth and get a champ bag from him, but for the first time this week. When I put “No loot?” in map chat, everyone says, “You didn’t do enough damage.”

What the heck?!? I cycled through all my skills with both weapon sets- there was literally no way for me to do more damage playing that toon. Simply tagging (which I always hated) does not guarantee any loot. “Join a party” should not make a difference, as a Dev said here last year on a post that being in a party or not should not effect your loot. So now we ARE competing for drops, which is completely against the manifesto Anet championed at release. Worse, I’m a lvl 80 down-leveled for the zone. What about someone playing a toon at the level of the map with map-level weapons? If I’m not getting loot, they certainly can’t be.

They’ve removed those loots. I’ve never ever gotten champ from the dogs after feature pack and I farm worldbosses on a daily basis. Even so I’ve gone more into DPS after the patch too so it’s impossible I’ve done too little damage on those events.

Ouimette.5902, perhaps I should clarify. Those dogs DO drop champ loot, as I’ve gotten 1-3 the previous 3 days, but missed Ulgoth’s bag. Others in map chat will tell you (as they told me) that they DID get champ loot from the dogs AND Ulgoth. So you’ve been robbed, so to speak, as well. It used to be (and technically still is) that you got loot from each champ dog and Ulgoth, plus the big chest on the ground and your once daily bonus chest. With the megaserver, you’re not guaranteed that champ loot anymore, just the big ground and bonus chest.

So, to sum up the suggestions of 1000+ posts.

-

Suggestions:

Disable megaservers in major cities and difficult bosses such as wurm and teq.
Districts like GW1.
Opt in, Opt out feature being able to choose when you want to access it or stick with your homeserver.
Tags for sorting to make it less random, language, guild, RP, farming, etc.
