already 29 pages and no statement from ANet. in general the update is great in my opinion, but there needs to be some serious tuning to how instances are created and people get placed in:

  • most zones now have to many people in them. it’s hard to even get event participation (or loot privileges) even with full dps setups (as mentioned the champion warbeasts at modnir still drop loot, it’s just unlikely to get it due to not being able to dish out enough damage, no matter what build)
  • organized events can’t be organized anymore. even if a guild/community manages to get an empty overflow/instance, it fills up so quickly with random people, it’s not possible to get everyone into the instance before it hardcaps
  • guild missions are highly delayed due to too many guilds trying for the same thing
  • event scaling still doesn’t work well and some events get way to easy with a zerg, while others are unnecessarily prolonged while not getting any more challenging

I think a decent hotfix would be to limit the maximum amount of players getting into the same instance to around 60 – after that, everyone above needs a taxi, or at least randoms are only placed in the same instance at a rate of 1/minute. this would at least make organized events a bit more predictable as they wouldn’t be filled with 50+ random players getting on the map with no intention of participating.
in the long run, we absolutely need a way to create instances without any possibility to join without a taxi.

So yeah, now guild missions. Why have 500 slots for a guild when a “MEGAserver” will only hold 150ish people.

Ridiculous…

To be fair that have been the case since release.
You couldn’t fit 500 players into one map before either. So not really a MegaServer issue.

True, at least before it was only split between 2 servers. Now we are seeing members on 3 or 4 different servers. Still more of a hassle to get these done.

That’s a PR stunt. It’s what you do to calm the restless masses. (Not that I blame them at all, we are restless.) Say a lot of pretty words that don’t say much as a show that they are listening. Maybe they are. Maybe they aren’t. But a PR stunt does not count as an actual act of communication with the people in these forums. None of the concerns are being openly adressed except for that one shining glorious moment that they did in the German forums. I’ll still hold unto hope that one of them will do the same for us here.

PS: I am aware that they are not obligated to say anything at all… But it would still be nice, you know?

When Revenant does better than Necro
in every playstyle imaginable,
they’ll call it a day and release HoT.

Heya!

Suggestion: WvWvW queue system reused for Megaserver instances.

  • Player right-clicks on a member and picks Join in Sparkfly Fen or whatever.
  • Game asks, “That instance is full. Would you like to queue up for it?”
  • If the player says yes, they get some feedback somewhere showing the queue length and their position in it.

Or am I supposed to make a new topic for this suggestion?

As to mega-servers — those are about appearances. GW2 was always supposed to be about large groups of players doing content in the persistent world. Empty zones kill MMO’s.

However, there isn’t a persistent world any longer. Only worlds that exist temporarily and then disappear once people leave them. If anything, Guild Wars 2 since the start of the “Living” World has always been about moving players in concert from one activity to the next using carrots like achievements and loot so that they are all together and don’t experience empty zones as there is no longer anything to gain there… unless you liked that sort of thing, which few players seemed to. I really don’t think they care if activities leave their marks on a persistent world any longer given the boss schedules and how the megaservers function.

Skill lag is much worse in world events ever since the megaservers went live. I don’t know if this lag is related to the system itself or the scheduled events allowing more people to catch the event at the same time, but during weekends it’s not uncommon for me to see the fight continue to play out five minutes after it ended (no chat lag, so my party can inform me what’s not going on around me).

I’m on a 130M line (granted I only get 50M down most of the time), before anyone suggests to get broadband.

I am wondering what server most of you are on. I come from a T1 NA highly populated server. Overflows are not new to me at all. World bosses being a giant ball of light are not new. A zerg of players decimating LS event and or normal events is not new.

I realize there are other concerns here, but for those concerns I am a little puzzled.

Well we would be from many different servers. and as such previous experience differs.
I was from EU Vabbi. notoriously smallest server in the game.
As such- I likely experience the most drastic change when mega servers came.
I used to be able to team up with 2-10 friends/guilders and take down the common WB’s. A good challenge when we where few.. you learn how to fight.
-The bad side was – never being able to do large scale LS events or Teq etc. unless we went on purpose to an OF/big server.

I did visit Desolance.(big EU) just to see how that was like. and yes experience there was much like Megaserver with hundreds of players on a simple WB. = boring.

Ideally I guess would be to gain old server system back and either make WBs scale even better+ better AI .. and/or make the population on servers more even— but keeping the server identity.

Meh… I transferred to TC to RP, but now because of the megaserver, I can’t even be with my guild for RP events. When I log in on a different character, I’m put in a whole different instance. (I’m not even going to talk about how toxic map chat has become)

Also, I find the whole idea of a Home World for your character kind of pointless now that we’re lumped together with people from other Worlds.

Suggestion: Low-Population Megaserver shards.

These would be the same as normal megaserver shards, but with a map cap of about 30 people. They would be entirely opt-in: you would have to a) know they exist, and b) select the ‘low-pop’ option to be placed in one.

Reasons:
1) Gameplay: massive zergs are good for some things, and a lot of players seem to enjoy them. But having massive amounts of players around isn’t fun for everyone, all the time. Most exploration and event stop being challenging with more than 2 or 3 players. Moreover, exploration is terrible if all the events in the zone are done, and there are 10 or more players at all the remaining ones.
2) Performance: I, and a lot of other players, don’t have brilliant PCs or internet. Having every map full all the time has massively increased loading screen times, the likelihood of lag, and so on. Being able to zone into a play on a map with fewer people makes the game perform much better. It is, however, no longer possible on the megaserver.

Cons for Arenanet:
None. As it is a megaserver system, the server resources would be directly in proportion to the amount of players who choose to opt-in. If not many players want to play on low-pop shards, then barely any system resources will be used. If lots of players want to use them, then Anet will know they are popular and that is was an good decision to implement. Moreover, it increases player choice, which will always make more players happy. In no way would it decrease enjoyment for players who like full maps.

yeah this is one of the best options for solving the “comfortable” population issue. I would soft limit it at like hmm maybe 40 though, with people able to join in up to regular cap though.
They would only be generated on need or something.

i think a medium may be good as well, but maybe that would fracture it too much. Also bosses probably need to be redesigned/schedule. I mean your probably going to always have a large pop focused on the boss.

Yes, generated on need. So they would only take up server resources depending on their popularity.

But I think 30 is a reasonable cap, and a hard cap at that. Otherwise they’d be used by guilds wanting to do Missions and World Bosses: not bad things of themselves, but they would defeat the purpose of having a low-pop shard. Any more than 30 people on a map and you start to get zergs, which is part of what the idea is aiming to avoid.

As for world bosses, I think most of them would be fine. Maybe the 3 “Hard” ones (Teq, KQ, and Triple Wurm) wouldn’t spawn on low-pop servers. But otherwise, just leave them as is. This would also mean less work for Anet to achieve them, since all they’d need to do is make the option, and lower the map cap.

So, to sum up the suggestions of 1000+ posts.

-

Suggestions:

Disable megaservers in major cities and difficult bosses such as wurm and teq.
Districts like GW1.
Opt in, Opt out feature being able to choose when you want to access it or stick with your homeserver.
Tags for sorting to make it less random, language, guild, RP, farming, etc.

You forgot to add the ability for guilds to create their own private instances of maps so they can do missions as a guild (like they are supposed to do)

Districts cannot be implemented in GW2, I think a dev posted that on a thread some time ago, their GW2 tech does not allow the “district” system of GW1. Of course in programming nothing should be impossible but oh well, a dev said it not me.

A recent review of Elder Scrolls Online by internet reviewer Angry Joe calls the mega server idea they had the worst idea. Making grouping up with friends and guilds frustrating. I wonder what he would think of the Guild Wars 2 mega server. I just wrote to him hoping for some help. If your a fan of the show or actually apart of the Angry Joe army I suggest you write to him as well.

Joe was a huge fan of the game at launch. I can imagine though his show requires a lot of demand and he probably hasn’t been in guild wars for some time. I doubt he can help too much but the thing is that if it fails in Elder Scrolls Online then why the heck is it in my Guild Wars 2. Anet don’t take ideas from other MMO’s. It is what sets you apart that made me love this game to begin with. The breaking of the holy trinity is just one of the many different aspects that set Guild Wars apart.

Now I know your guys are not going to change your mind. Your lack of response is evident as is the news you guys updated not too long ago. The mega server is here to stay. Though for the love I have for this game please do a major, and I mean MAJOR fix to the system. Guilds and original server people should have top priority when it comes to filling a map for events. I don’t see my guild anymore nor the people I normally hang out with. My community that I loved is all but fading away. I can see many people leaving over this change if its not fix. I’ve been certainly considering it but I know and I believe you can make this system work.

Personally am finding the low-level zones a lot more fun now with multiple groups of randoms running around instead of an empty landscape punctuated by the occasional appearance of a zerg-train.

Now if they could just sort out trait acquisition and spread (plus pre-80 transmutation costs), levelling alts might actually be an appealing experience again.

I miss being able to choose

There was something epic about my girlfriend and me joining with a few people to take on a boss and winning that really made you earn your reward and there was a sense of accomplishment with doing it with few people. But even on Vabbi there were always people on the map that you could ask to join you in completing an event or boss.

Brilliant post!

I would really be happy with something like this, and you make some very good points too

This could also replace the menu part (on the main character screen) that allows you to guest to other servers (which now seems useless anyway).

Sadly this probably won’t happen, it won’t help RP’ers and I don’t think A-net would do multiple fixes for all the different affected groups.

We can wish though

I have a few things reading this post made me want to say. First off being, I am personally not willing to say (or think) that this is undoubtedly here to stay. I’d like to at least think there MAY be some way ANet will roll this back and eliminate the #megaSTUPIDserver all together. I guess I’ve always been a “the glass is half full” kind of person though.

Secondly, I know the feeling of “a single person cannot bring forth change”, but I’ve also come to learn it’s not true. It may take extra work, but a single person could kill an entire army. I don’t mean to say I’m going to kill anyone, or that anyone here should, over a matter like something we’re discontent with in a VIDEO GAME, but, I just merely mean that a single person CAN bring forth change. It may be just as difficult as it FEELS impossible though!

That being said, for a matter like this, I have fully prepared a nice LONG letter to IGN and any other game reviewing/oriented company I can find. I am reserving it as I also understand it’s the weekend right now, and most ANET employees are probably off of work, having fun with their family (as am I). BUT, if we do not hear something from an ANET official by the close of the business day MONDAY APRIL the 28th, 2014, I WILL be submitting this nice LONG letter to IGN and every other game reviewing company I can find on TUESDAY APRIL the 29th, 2014.

So at this point, I can only hope ANET decides to actually start working with us, or at the VERY least communicating with us on this issue. Before I, or someone else, convinces a ‘news outlet’ to cover the topic. Because once you get bad press, you get bad press. That will be on record forever…

One of the main features of megaservers — for Anet — is fewer map instances and thus cheaper running costs. Low population instances goes against that.

That’s the beauty of it, Anet can’t lose. Since low-pop shards would only be generated as players opt in, the amount of low-pop shards they’d need to make would only increase with player interest. If not many players want a low-pop shard, then there’d maybe be one or two extra shards per map (if that). If lots of players want a low-pop shard, then yes, Anet has to make more shards… but it would be doing what lots of the players want. Doing what lots of your customers want is never a bad idea.

Even if everyone wanted a low-pop shard, there would still be fewer shards running than there were under the persistent server system.

I love the new system. Being a player from EU I’ve been on NA server Anvil Rock since I got the game (because 100% of people there speak English opposed to fragmented EU servers with Germans, Polaks and so on…) and due to time zone differences I rarely saw other people on PvE maps. Now I have all the company I need.

You’d think being 10 000 km away means hardcore ping issues, but it is rarely the case.

It’s like I’m playing a whole new game with the megaserver system. People everywhere.

Good job! I hope it gets out and I hope the bad publicity never ends now!

We need more people like you.

Ah yes, I am sure threatening the company is the right way to go.
Because that is basically exactly what you are doing now. You are saying: “Do as I want you to do, otherwise I will do everything I can to bring you down”.

You also seems to be under the impression that said news outlets are unaware of the current situation, which is quite silly.
It is their job to know stuff like this, and clearly they don’t see the issue as much as you do, seeing as they have said nothing at all about it.

Maybe they are simply aware that there is a blog post that actually IS communicating and quite clearly admits that there are issues that they are working on, and thus they assume things will be fixed.
But then again, what do I know.

I just thought I’d put my 2 cents in… Overall I generally liked the Feature Update…. gave me a lot of things I’ve wanted for a long time, and made most things easier. The two things I didn’t like:

1) Town clothes becoming tonics
2) Megaservers

I was optimistic about the megaserver changes when they were announced… the goal of them sounded really good, but I can’t believe how much of a total failure they are.

They were advertised as keeping party, guild, home world, friends together. They do the complete opposite of that… and they also cause havoc with guild missions, world events, roleplay and even just general chat.

It is like you gave us the worst of just about everything. I understand that some low population servers had issues with not having enough people on them, but this takes things the complete opposite direction… now there are too many people… for everything!

Now doing almost anything I would do on a regular basis is much more challenging and much less fun. I don’t mean more challenging in the “requires more skill” way (which I would have been fine with) but… in a… “How do I find what I am trying to do” way… which has nothing to do with actually playing and enjoying the game… it is all logistics. In fact it has made some things too easy…. with so many people events are no longer a challenge… the challenge now is “Can I get enough hits in in time to get credit” or… even worse “am I going to do the event and not get credit because there are already too many people here before me” … these are not challenges that are fun.

While my first complaint about town clothes isn’t that big of a deal.. I didn’t use them often… it mainly affects roleplayers I would think….. but the second one… impact my game play ever single day… nearly every moment I am in the game.

Please either revert the megaserver changes or fix them so they actually work.

Why I hate this whole megaserver idea?

I’m simple, pretty casual player which likes pve a lot. My PC is almost 5 years already, and before megaserver I was able to do world bosses events with ~3fps (with lowest all graphic settings) and it was fun for me anyway.
And now comes the Mighty Megaserver:
1) I dont’t have now even 1 fps on world bosses and can’t do anything because of amount of people which is now at least 3x more than before. That takes all fun of gaming from me.
2) I’m in multiserver guild which is specialized for killing Great Jungle Wurm and Tequatl, and we can’t even gather all on one map to kill those bosses.

This is exactly is what is my problem now! I hate this kitten and it has to be dealt with.
For me it happens as soon as 30 people enter the area I’m in. I nearly crash my laptop and the game when the big zergs join in now. Its going to be woooo wooo wooo sound bug all over again (Remember those days?)!

I have to rant.

Megaserver has been really messing our guild up. Multiple times for guild missions, even though we are on the same server JQ, and in the same guild-

Due to other “events” going on in these maps, our guild cannot seem to join the same megaserver and thus we have been failing our guild bounties.

Well it may not match the general tone of most of this forum, but it’s for feedback so I’ll leave my feedback. While it isn’t without it’s issues which I’m sure they’re trying to work out to get better results of getting guilds and friends in the same map instance, I love the new megaservers. The metaevents are really high population sure but that’s not much a problem for me because I only do them when I’m not in the mood for other stuff in game. The real place I’m liking it is in the mid to upper level maps. I was so freaking sick of only seeing people when a metaevent started or doing queens or fgs train. Other than that I’d be lucky I saw one other person on the map. Doing anything in Orr or maps like Fireheart rise was just a dread because I’d be the only person on the map. And nothing feels more tedious than doing a bunch of events alone, they may as well just be repeatable hearts at that point. Now when I’m doing an event there’s actually a chance that 1-2 people will join me. The world feels more alive in my opinion, I actually get to see what the temples are like in Orr (I took my time leveling my first characters and didn’t get till Orr till everyone had already decided it wasn’t worth running anymore.) If I wanted to spend so much time in maps seeing absolutely nobody I’d just find a single player game instead.

First, waypoint links in chat should include which instance of a zone they go to. Someone in guild chat links that they have a bounty target, the guild should not get scattered to three different versions of that zone when they take the waypoint link.
Likewise if someone posts a waypoint link in chat asking for help with an event or skill point, people jumping to that link should be in the zone the poster asked from. They shouldn’t arrive and assume that since they don’t see the player that asked, that the player got frustrated and left, only to see the player asking again later.

If you click on a waypoint link and cannot go to the same zone as everyone else that is clicking on that waypoint link, then you should get a message much like the overflow zone messages before and the option to enter the correct zone when possible. This way you at least know not to waste your time looking for the rest of the players you were expecting to meet in this zone.

Second, when multiple instances of a zone are active it should be visible. Other games with the concept have appended numbers to the end of the zone, so you see that you were actually in divinity’s reach 3 instead of divinity’s reach 1. You could ask players which one of multiple zones they were in, or ask for them to link a waypoint so you could get to their zone once you realized they were in a different instance of the zone than you.

Well, after this “Megaserver” thing, I’ve basically quit. Logging in and seeing a bunch of random people isn’t as fun as logging in and seeing the old familiar faces. The new update also brought with it a bunch of goldsellers, which spam constantly with seemingly endless accounts.

So until Arenanet rolls it back to how it used to be, I’ll just find something else to play.

I’d also like to point out that, if you people dislike it, then show it. Stop your gem purchasing, don’t play the game. If Anet sees a drop in one of these departments, they will more eager to listen and actually communicate.

Been there, done that…

Leveling isn’t an option anymore anyway, as zerg have taken over everything. I only log-in to RP with the last two (we used to be 29) people of my guild, who despite the now death around us, refuse to leave the game. RP isn’t an option either to be honest, as anything besides “party chat”, becomes a live and vibrant beacon for a collection of trolls, with a common goal in mind…

1. World Bosses:
Big Bosses like Tequatl are almost undoable right now.
2. Guild Missions:
You get on entirely different instances of the map, yay u have to switch your entire guild to one of the maps, that takes you a lot of time

This was my experience of Lyssa before Megaserver, though Sanctum of Rall apparently had a lot less people attacking during the “look away” phases. :-)

Ok starting to wonder why to even post this as it feels like no one who is able to fix the problems cares at all but ok…

2nd week of mega server, 2nd week of guildmissions. its a pain, takes 2 times the normal time and still not everyone gets in. Ran into a bugged mega shard for puzzle so we had to redo it hoping we ended up on a different map that did work. (1 activator down the drain)

As we can see from all these massive topics about mega servers.

If you do not care with who you play, server communities or are part of a very large guild, playing in groups of max 25 players and like to have more players arround, Mega servers are a great addition (but you get massive worldboss events with spam 1 to kill with it)

If you however like to do things in game with a larger group, care about your server community, run things in game in large groups (50+) then mega servers are a pain since you have to taxi all the time.

still don’t understand why mega server was not just added as extra server next to the existing servers. use mega as an underflow option when you enter a low population map (give popup like when server was ready to get out of overflow) so you can opt to join there.

want to be on megaserver all the time, just move to the mega server and you are on them all the time (keep old server for WvW purposes and transfer to mega server should be free.

For those of us who do not like mega servers, we can stay on our servers as we had them. If we feel we run low on players for what ever, we can always opt to go to mega server.

if a server map is full, you get moved to megaserver, but get a popup when there is space again (like old overflow system)

With all the servers combined i think there would be enough to opt for megaserver to keep at least the megaserver maps populated enough.

and everyone who was happy with the old situation, could just keep playing as they liked. This would also solve all current problems that we have with guild missions, recruiting for wvw guilds/ pve server communties, Role players, and even the larger TEQ killing guilds (as they can just guest to 1 of the lower populated servers to do their teq run, comming from FoW i know that there was hardly anyone on that map unless when we organized a run.

talking of which we were in the process of organizing our server community to go on teq runs together, but ….. that is now impossible since we are with many guilds on the server it would take a lot of time to even find a map that has space to hold them all and since we are not in 1 guild communication is hard ( no not everyone is on TS and many have 5 guilds already so making a community guild is also not practical)

right now we have no place to host any server community events except for wvw maps since all the other maps are on mega server. (lucky for us our server does not do a lot of wvw so we have space there, but its just not right )

Please something needs to be done about these problems and fast or we might as well give up on server community events for now (only WvW is now possible together)

Well, there’s another thing that also says a thousand words, that being a thousand words. And thousands of words have already been said here in this thread and in the others (not to mention all of the threads that have been closed/locked). How many of those thousands have been on the part of ANet? Let’s just say not enough.

been having lots of issues with our guild being on different mega-servers during bounties, sometimes porting them in with a party takes to long and the bounty either fails or we lose a large amount of time and may not be able to finish.

My opinion about the Megaserver and the way ArenaNet implemented it is not changed after this weekend:

  • the idea is great
  • normal PvE in most zones is better
  • big events are a joke because of the amount of players participating
  • organizing guild missions still give me a headache
  • communication is still non-existing

We did guild missions today at 8pm CEST. First bounty target was already being killed by another guild while a big part of our guild was not in the same map instance. And as at least one of us hit it, we got the kill. So we had to find a second target to give most members their reward. Prisoner it was and we were lucky to find him fast. It took us only a few minutes to get most members in the same instance so we had just enough time to kill him. But our guild did not end up in the same map for both targets as should be. When we do a guild mission I expect the Megaserver system to put us all in the same map instance. If not it fails. Simple as that.
With the Challenge, Rush and Puzzle we also ended up in different instances but for these events we had more time to taxi everyone to the correct instance so they went better. Puzzle failed on a strange bug I reported, but that is not related to the Megaserver.

Communication exists when you have a sender and a receiver. We send in this thread (as ArenaNet asked us) but I see no sign that ArenaNet is listening. ArenaNet putting some PR crap in a blog post is the only sending I see from ArenaNet. I don’t think anybody here takes that crap serious. So communication is still lacking.
Still no word about how ArenaNet thinks the system should work and if it works as intended. Yeah, work has to be done (or whatever the sentence was in the blog post). Well work always has to be done on a IT system. Can you be a little bit more exact? Please.

Mega servers make trolls very happy since they come Lyssa kill all the undead so It wont trigger then laugh about it. IMHO I think the need for one event to fail to get the one you need to start is poorly conceived. Especially since its for a trait that has to be attempted on every alt.

Won’t work. Everyone will use the tag to get their party or guild into the same instance and if everyone uses it, that’s the same as it not existing at all.

A lot of people are saying this. The real reason we have megaservers is to save Anet money. The fewer map instances, the less server resources are needed, the more money Anet saves.
