I’m glad they’ve decided to add a semi-wardrobe to the game. It’s not a real wardrobe since you still need transmutation items. Ideally, once you unlock a gear piece, you’d be able to apply that anyway you like, on whoever you like, whenever you like – infinitely. Still, for a game whose appearance system has thus far been in the Dark Ages compared with most other MMOs, this is at least a little something.

It still doesn’t seem to solve the ridiculous limiting of the town clothes system unless I’ve missed something, we still can’t switch up town clothes looks to armor and back again.

But since this needs transmutation charges its just another money grab.

The gem store in Guild Wars 2 in comparison is completely harmless.

Yeah, keep telling yourself that

it’s either 15 bucks a month and free stuff

or free to play and the occasional thing you want or need you have to pay for

sadly i think i would choose the first lol….i spend more than that a month on the game as it is

I am really excited about the upcoming wardrobe and I would like to have answers to certain questions.

1) My guardian has Twilight, my warrior has Sunrise. Will I be able to craft Eternity after the update and give it to both of them?

2) At a certain point I used to have several Corrupted weapons. I got tired of the skins and transmuted others over them. Will the Corrupted skins suddenly appear for me?

3) Same goes to some Gemstore armors, I bought them, used them and then transmuted over newer things.

4) If I have unlocked rare skins in pvp, can I use them in pve? Thinking of Dwayna’s longbow here.

Also what about all armor and weapons I have accumulated during the years that have been equipped or salvaged, would we be getting all the skins back ?

I would like to know this too seeing as how I once had the Profane Armor skin and no longer have it.

The purchase is in my Gem Store log though.

I once had Teq wings that disappeared due to a bug that the devs wont give back. i would like to see those in there. The achievement history is enough proof that they r unlocked on my account.

If you have an item that has gone through skin progression, like a legendary weapon or one of the Spinal Blade backpacks from the “Escape from Lion’s Arch” and “Battle for Lion’s Arch” releases, you will unlock all of the skins in that direct line of progression. That means that if you made Twilight, you will have access to both the Twilight and Dusk skins across your entire account. If you’ve created the Dynamic Tempered Spinal Blades, you’ll unlock that skin and all previous Spinal Blade skins

Well, this is certainly nice. I’ve been wanting a better costume/appearance system since before launch, nice that they finally were able to roll this out. This is a huge upgrade over what we had before.

That being said, while I was really giddy over it initially, I’m starting to realize the limitations. The thing this does not do is address the problem of gear churn for leveling characters. By putting the cost on the back end, when you transmute, rather than when you unlock, there is still a disincentive to maintain you look when your level 47 Guardian (or whatever) gets a new drop—because they may get a better drop in 15 minutes, and do you want to pay another transmute charge then too? My guard has been hauling around a set she picked up with karma for 20 levels now, because my gear set is never stable enough to justify using t-stones when I know she’ll be getting a new something any time now. It would be nice if there was a price break of some kind for lowbie characters, to get them into using the system early on. This is the situation where the traditional appearance slot system is still superior. But I understand they probably did this to keep from totally cannibalizing the income stream from t-stones, which I’m guessing is probably a decent chunk of Gem Store money.

For 80’s, on the other hand, it’s pretty sweet. I’m really looking forward to being able to surf through the wardrobe trying different combinations. I wonder if we’ll be able to preview dyes as well before committing to a transmutation? That would make it better than using the PvP locker now.

And I can finally start using all those LS skins and items, as well as the random bits of armor from the personal story that don’t show up anywhere else. This is really going to help my bank space.

And the town clothes change is pretty cool too. I never had any use for town clothes that couldn’t be worn in combat, so hopefully this will open the door for cool new outfits. Gem store armors and town clothes are WAY more appealing now—I will finally be shelling out some money when Halloween and Wintersday roll around this year!

It’s funny, I was playing the Wildstar beta this past weekend and thinking how much I wanted to steal their appearance system for GW2, and then this comes out. What are they going to introduce next, player housing?

As for all of the individual town clothes pieces (khaki pants, sweaters, hoodies), I guess those are the ones to be turned into tonics.

But I have bought the pieces to use them together. How should I use four tonics at the same time?

No clue man…

That really needs further clarification.

That mean that if you equiped Sunrise and Twilight you would have them unlocked. If you did eternity and equip it, then you would have Sunrise, Twilight, Eternity, Dawn and Dusk unlocked. But if you sold eternity i’m pretty sure that you would not get Sunrise and Twilight unlocked.

But if you equip sunrise and twilight, then craft eternity and sell it AFTER THE PATCH, the i guess that you would still keep sunrise and twilight unlocked. With woud be pretty OP. If that happen, i would consider that as a logic bug and they would eventually fix that. I’m pretty sure that Anet could view that as an exploit and possibly ban people for that, so i won’t try that with my legendaries lol.

This is how I see it working:

Obtain sunrise + twilight (neither account bound): Fuse to make eternity not account bound. Sunrise and twilight no longer in wardrobe (just like now how you don’t get to keep twilight and sunrise after making eternity.

Obtain sunrise + twilight (account bound): Fuse to make eternity which is account bound. Keep sunrise and twlight in wardrobe aswell.

Correct, the skin become unlocked for the account. To apply the skin appearance to an actual armor piece, it costs a transmute ‘charge’ not any different than using a stone or a crystal currently. Just now, you don’t have to go out and hunt up the skin again if you want it on someone else.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Same here. I purchased a lot of the old town cloths in a hurry last Christmas because I loved them and didn’t want to miss them. I would have purchased more if they were still available and I had had enough gems. I DON’T use them for costume brawl, I use them for roleplaying or just for wandering around the cities because I LOVE the look.

So first of all why do I have to lose them?

And second, if I am going to lose them, and I’m going to receive something in exchange, why should it be an stupid endless tonic which a) I’m not going to use because as I said I don’t use my town clothes for costume brawl b) Will probably be account bound so I won’t be able to sell it and c) Maybe I will receive it twice so I will receive something useless in exchange for items for which I paid REAL money?

At least, give us our gems back! It is not the solution I want (the one I want is to keep my clothes), but it’s the less bad one.

And on a side note, they say the other costumes will be considered a “single outfit”? Again you consider them just props for costume brawl? I likes to combine my Winter outfit pieces with my riding pants! And I would have liked to combine the pirate outfit pieces even more (like wearing the pants or the shirt apart). If you make them a single item, they will become useless again ;_;

I like most of the wardrobe changes… but this change really makes me sad.

To unlock a skin, you must use it.

but here’s a question about that if an anet person can clarify. say if you have armor skins you used on a char like a cultural set that you ended up deleting, since you used those items before will they get added? from what i understand of the system is that you have to log into each character you have and what ever skins they have on they will be added but there’s no mention if previous items you have worn which you got ride of will be added or not. especially with the gem store skins since many like to take one or two off a set and get ride of the rest? and also will all gem store purchased skins to be unlocked since you can see you bought them via gem store?

I’m glad they’ve decided to add a semi-wardrobe to the game. It’s not a real wardrobe since you still need transmutation items. Ideally, once you unlock a gear piece, you’d be able to apply that anyway you like, on whoever you like, whenever you like – infinitely. Still, for a game whose appearance system has thus far been in the Dark Ages compared with most other MMOs, this is at least a little something.

It still doesn’t seem to solve the ridiculous limiting of the town clothes system unless I’ve missed something, we still can’t switch up town clothes looks to armor and back again.

That’s the price we pay for playing a B2P game. The money has to come from somewhere. LotRO and Rift have great appearance systems and are F2P—but they get their money from somewhere else. So if we weren’t paying here, Anet would be taking the loss of t-stone income from somewhere.

As to the town clothes, I went back and re-read this:

Town Clothes sold through the gem store as outfits, such as the Pirate Captain’s Outfit, will be usable as a single outfit skin through the Wardrobe. Purchasing an outfit will unlock it for all characters on your account to use. Outfits will replace the look of equipped armors, are equipped in a separate appearance slot, and do not require Transmutation Charges to use. Single items, such as the Fuzzy Hats and Scarlet’s Spaulders, will be unlocked for your entire account and usable with any armor weight. Some basic clothing items that are no longer available for purchase will be converted into endless tonics.

I originally took that to mean that outfits can be worn over armor, but reading it again, it’s not totally clear. But the picture under that paragraph shows someone wearing the Fancy Wintersday outfit and holding a rifle, so it looks like effectively you can change your armor appearance to look like Town Clothes. Similar to the costume outfit items in LotRO, if you’ve played that.

no. legendary = ugly skins

Anet! Thank you! Thank you! And thrice thank you! As a wardrobe obsessed altoholic with two highly fashionable mesmers (and some other characters that just come along for the ride), I am thoroughly elated with this news!

*applauds*

EDIT: having given it a few weeks, I’m just taking back two of those thank yous. Transmutes for pre-80s is horrible, lost runes is horrible, town clothes debacle is horrible. Having one stupid yellow crystal leftover from previously gem shop-purchased crystals is horrible. One transmute for city map completion? Not everyone leaves that completion until 80, you know. Short-changing pre-80 characters this way is not cool. Certainly not when you don’t have armour equality in effect.

A wardrobe was a nice idea, but kitten me if I don’t think I prefer the pre-patch way of doing things in a contest of the two.

No. ArenaNet is not responsible for appeasing players who decide to get two of one skin, in my opinion.

For purchased skins? Yes.

For Legendaries? No.

You are paying for a skin that has no stats from the store. They are making those duplicates obsolete.
With a legendary, you are getting the stats, the looks, and the ability to change the stats any time you want. You are losing nothing from having two of the same legendary because it will still function the exact same way as it did before. If you only got it for the looks, you’re going to be disappointed for sure since a much cheaper option is about to go live, but you should take some solace in the other benefits that having two legendaries bestows.

LOL, the toy story meme is hysterical. This makes me want to play the game and farm for a legendary even more so actually.

IDK if anyone has noticed or said anything yet…..but they had this implemented in SPVP already. We had a locker for all the skins we made for our chars!!!!!!!! So after almost two years , they FINALLY decided to bring this over to PVE? Why now? I mean, I like the changes, it makes sense. But that makes me curious as to what they plan on doing with SPVP locker.

Around the time the game first came out, I bought a skin which I used for SPVP, without honestly knowing I could only use it once. Not that big of the deal at the time, but if ANET plans on fusing every single locker across all play, it would be nice to use the skins I have collected in SPVP, on the PVE side of things. But I doubt this would happen considering I bet a lot of people bought the racial skins (for only 60g) prior to the glory change. A lot of people would probably be kittened that they had to spend more gold and time on it.
