I’d also like to know, if we can a gem refund, if we bought skins from the gem store twice or even multiple times.
My Eng has the Flamewalker-skin in pvp and once in pve. And my warrior and guardian have both the Phalanx-skin.

If the charges are about the same as what transmutation stones cost right now, they’re FAR cheaper than getting multiple copies of some of the gemstore skins, especially some of the single use skins like Marjory’s Dagger.

I’ve doubled or triple bought a number of these as they got reintroduced with the March sales and I would have held off had I known this was coming. I’m going to feel very very ripped off if there isn’t some form of compensation since they knew this system was coming in and there was no prior warning not to buy more of them if you already had them.

And what source of revenue would you add to the game in order to make up for the revenue lost without transmutation?

They’ll be making it up in spades from dye sales obviously.

well you know… except for the fact that you can craft them… and harvest them… and MF them… and get them as ingame rewards… and the fact that most people will be getting 400-500 unidentified dyes on patch day due to duplicates…

But if you ignore all that then… CASH GRAB!

You have 2 legendary rarity weapons and you can change stats on them at any time. Others will one purple and one exotic or ascended or whatever item they are transmuting.

I’m glad they’ve decided to add a semi-wardrobe to the game. It’s not a real wardrobe since you still need transmutation items. Ideally, once you unlock a gear piece, you’d be able to apply that anyway you like, on whoever you like, whenever you like – infinitely. Still, for a game whose appearance system has thus far been in the Dark Ages compared with most other MMOs, this is at least a little something.

It still doesn’t seem to solve the ridiculous limiting of the town clothes system unless I’ve missed something, we still can’t switch up town clothes looks to armor and back again.

And what source of revenue would you add to the game in order to make up for the revenue lost without transmutation?

It’s easy man:

Pay for UNLOCKING a skin. Not for using it.

That way you have fewer skins, the ones you really want and you can use whenever you want.

Right now you have ALL the skins but can use them only by paying money everytime. So basically, you got nothing.

I’d rather pay money to unlock my Gas Mask helm skin so that I switch to it everytime I run into a swampy area than having it “unlocked” and having to pay everytime I run into the same area.

Think about it.

They have something for the dye system(free unidentified dye for multiple dyes across alts), what’s gonna be difficult though is all the possibilities of duplicate skins, t3’s, dungeon armors, karma bought items, badge bought items, legendary weapons etc.

What qualifies for compensation? What exactly will they compensate you with(and the numerous other people in the same situation)? How the kitten will they be able to do this compensation fairly for all(and their duplicate skins)?

Since this has happened before, I feel quite certain than unused skins will be able to be refunded for gems. Those gems could then go towards transmutation charges.

I would either request it now, and wait and see, or wait until the patch hits (though be sure that they will have super high ticket volume at that time and it might take a while).

I really like the new approach. However, imho, it would have been better if different “rarities” of skins would require different amounts of transmutation charges – especially with higher cost for legendaries. Twinks with legendaries, that simply doesn’t seem right. And let’s be honest: You build legendary weapons for the look, not for the stats.

This also applies to other rare skins, like black lion weapons – they’ll lose their value and that’s kind of sad.

And on a side note, they say the other costumes will be considered a “single outfit”? Again you consider them just props for costume brawl? I likes to combine my Winter outfit pieces with my riding pants! And I would have liked to combine the pirate outfit pieces even more (like wearing the pants or the shirt apart). If you make them a single item, they will become useless again ;_;

I feel exactly the same about this. I didn’t get the costumes only for the costumes. This change is really disappointing.

I’ve read the blog and been looking at the various posts about the new wardrobe, but I’m still a little hazy on the details.

Question:
If I equip a level 1 sword (for example) that I looted off a monster I killed will the “look”/“skin” of that weapon now be unlocked and present in my Wardrobe? Or will the level 1 sword actually have to become “soulbound” (by applying a sigil, for exemple) for it to appear in my Wardrobe?

Question:
If I go into the Wardrobe tab of my Hero panel and decide to use the “look”/skin of the level 1 sword to replace the look of my current sword, I will have to pay a “transmutation charge” for the change to take effect (this much I get).
What happens when 3 levels later I decide to equip another sword? Will I:
a) loose the look of the level 1 sword and have to reapply it and again pay another “transmutation charge”? (Which would be bad because, compared to what happens today, the cost would have tripled (for sub 80 items).)
or
b) will the look of the level 1 sword remain applied to any sword I equip until I either choose a new “look”/skin from the wardrobe (and pay another “transmutation charge”) or I equip a weapon that is not a sword?

Anyone have any ideas about the above?

Perhaps we should just be very happy about it? If you would have 2 Bolts i.e. you’ll still have 2 Bolts with Legendary stats and you’ll be able to use them on every Sword-wielding character you have (and perhaps in PvP aswell!)

It’s not a matter of loss, it’s a matter of gaining less than someone with 1 Bolt, but still more than everyone that doesn’t have a Legendary in the first place.

If the characters are the same race, yes you would be able to use it. It is not free.

The buy more option in the video was referring to transmutation charges, the replacement to the Transmutation Crystals and Stones. Applying skin changes through the wardrobe will cost transmutation charges.

Yes, to the legendary. For an unknown transmutation charge cost.

The new system looks a lot promising, but few things concern me:
1. Armor/Weapons often present clipping issues only while the character is moving (recent exemple is the Phalanx Warplate with Greatsword/Staff), so I think that the hero panel is too restictive.

  • Solution: use the Hall of Monuments istance to let us see the armor/weapons equipped on our actual character.

2. After purchasing from the Store a full armor set, if you use just 1 piece and want to store the rest you have to pay again for transmutation crystals to utilize your already bought skins.

  • Solution: automatically move our unused SKINS in the wardrobe and give us 1 credit for each piece.

p.s. English is not my mother tongue, so it is possible that I misunderstood something, if so please let me know.

You can still obtain the skin through normal methods, if you like. No one is forcing you to use the wardrobe feature.

If you’ve been hoarding Transmutation Stones and Crystals, don’t worry! When the Wardrobe goes live, you’ll be able to convert your them into Transmutation Charges. Transmutation Crystals can be directly converted into charges, and Transmutation Stones can be converted at a three-to-one rate.

Currently, Transmutation Stones are given as a reward for map completion and dailies. What will happen to those is currently unknown. So you will not necessarily have to buy gems for charges.

I have given ANet a lot of flak recently about their design-choices (or lack thereof) when it comes to class-changes.

But this new account-bound wardrobe is pretty cool, I can’t deny it. Making skins that much more manageable will make finding and experimenting with various looks much more seamless.

It may even pave the way for cosmetic progression where certain skins are tied to in-game challenges.

Until now I’ve been a guy who didn’t feel too strongly about his looks. But now I could see myself getting really into it.

I just wanted to let you know what this is appreciated, even by a critical poster.

Thanks Belzebu and Sinzer for the clarification on the first question. So just equipping it should add it to the Wardrobe. Cool.

Thanks for the answer on the second question Belzebu. If that really is how it will work, then that actually kind of sucks.

I really like the look of a Greatsword I got as a level 8 quest reward and have been applying that look over and over as I leveled my warrior. The cost has been 1 x Transmutation Stone at a time. Now, the cost will effectively triple to continue to apply that look to new weapons.

Unless… UNLESS… this sentence (from the blog):
“Unlocked skins can be applied to items infinitely (for just one Transmutation Charge), which makes it much less stressful to try out a new look for your character, since you can always switch back!”
means that once a “look”/skin is unlocked (and by “unlocked” I mean I have already paid the “Transmutation Charge” once for it) I can choose that “look”/skin again and again and again without paying another “Transmutation Charge”.

It would be nice to get some “official” clarification.

It makes sense they’d do this, cause the single piece town clothes are barely bought, so are the town clothes even, that’s why they make you able to use them in combat too.

This is a smart move, we be able to enjoy these skins more and probably have a lot of laughs with the randomness we can do with them, which means more will be inclined to buy them now. That in turn might lead to more people buying them with real cash and that also means more money for NCsoft and Anet.

Everyone is happy!

I only need 1 Bolt now to use them on every sword-wielding character I have. The people without legendaries can still craft one and then get the same benefit so that isn’t an argument.

It is a matter of loss though. I crafted the 2nd Bolt just for the skin. They are always set to zerker and that has never changed. I could care less about the legendary status as well since multiple ascended zerker swords are dirt cheap in comparison to a 3k gold price tag.

I think a simple solution would be to make any duplicate legendaries no longer account bound. I’m still losing 15% of 3k or 400g if I try to sell it right now but I still get most of my money back on a super expensive skin because that’s all it ever was. How many double bolt mesmers or double incinerator thieves/eles do you think change the stats? Are we suddenly going to run condi builds?

Afaik on April 15 after the patch, phalanx armor will be unlocked on your account. To put the armor on your warrior, it will cost 6 charges, likely the cost of 6 crystals.

Since you currently have Phalanx skins soulbound on your guardian, the skins will become unlocked for use by all of your characters. To apply the Phalanx skin onto your warrior’s armor, you will need Transmutation Charges. 1 charge for each piece of gear (just like stones/crystals are now). After it goes live, if you have 3 Transmutation Stones they will be converted into 1 Transmutation Charge. 1 Transmutation Crystal will be 1:1 to Transmutation Charges.

So after live, all you will need to do is:

  • Log in to your Guardian that has the skins soulbound to it and it will unlock the phalanx skins to the account wardrobe
  • Log in to your Warrior and apply the phalanx skins from the wardrobe to each desired piece of armor (each piece needing a Charge to change its skin)
  • 3 T-Stones (when converted to charges) will grant 1 T-Charge
  • 1 T-Crystal (when converted to charges) will grant 1 T-Charge
  • Repeat for 2nd Warrior.
  • Total of 12 charges to outfit your two warriors in full Phalanx armor
