Feedback/Questions: Town clothes, Costumes, & Combat
i personally think the Basic stones should give 1 charge, and the Crystals should give 5 charges. all armor changes below 80 should cost 1 charge, and level 80 armor changes cost 5 charges. this way, basic stones still allow SOME use for level 80 armor sets, but still dont end up costing us a ton.
Anet, you sold us specific items with specific functions and features. Upon the purchase of town clothes, it was understood that they were interchangeable and dyeable. I understand technically it was the gems that were sold to the costumer, but it could be argued that this was actually a currency conversion, as the digital currency “gems” has been used to purchase “goods,” in this instance, town clothes. The gems were often used by customers to purchase a specific product offered – a product that has been reduced to tonics, which the player did not purchase, and may have had no interest in purchasing. This is really, really disrespectful to your costumers.
In fact, this arguably could be a major conflict for consumer protection. Many US states have passed legislation to protect consumers, such as the Uniform Deceptive Trade Practices Act, which specifically states “A person engages in a deceptive trade practice when, in the course of his or her business, vocation, or occupation, the person: … represents that goods or services are of a particular standard, quality, or grade or that goods are a particular style or model, if they are of another (Uniform Deceptive Trade Practices Act, 815 ILCS 510/2, from Ch. 121 1/2, par. 312.)”
However, I do understand that you are protected under your own user agreement. “SUBJECT TO SECTION 12©, ANY SERVICE, CONTENT OR SOFTWARE FROM NCSOFT, ANY THIRD-PARTIES UNDER AGREEMENT WITH NCSOFT, ANY PARENT, SUBSIDIARY OR AFFILIATE OF NCSOFT, OR ANY EMPLOYEE, AGENT, SUPPLIER, LICENSEE, CUSTOMER, DISTRIBUTOR, SHAREHOLDER, DIRECTOR OR OFFICER OF ANY OF THE FOREGOING, IS PROVIDED AT YOUR OWN RISK ON AN “AS AVAILABLE,” “AS IS” BASIS IN ITS CURRENT CONDITION AND WITHOUT ANY REPRESENTATION, GUARANTEE, OR WARRANTY OF ANY KIND OR IN ANY WAY RELATED TO SERVICE, SUPPORT, INDEMNITY, ERROR FREE OR UNINTERRUPTED OPERATION, UPDATES, CORRECTION OF DEFECTS, OR THAT IT IS FREE FROM DEFECTS OR VIRUSES OR HARMFUL COMPONENTS OF ANY FORM WHATSOEVER. (Guild Wars 2 User Agreement, Section 12, paragraph a).”
Even if you are protected by a user agreement, that does not mean you’ve not been deceptive. Anet, your costumers paid for a specific, well defined product, town clothing, some of which have been owned for over a year. You gave no warning that they would no longer exist, change in nature, or be converted into another item (tonics). They were understood to be interchangeable items. In fact, you put many on sale recently, not informing buyers that the items they were purchasing would soon not be of the nature the costumer was led to believe. Even if legal, it’s unethical, and how a company respects its client purchases says a lot about how successful they will be.
Personally, I like the idea of running around in my town clothes, guns ablaze. However, I don’t like the idea of items I specifically purchased to be interchangeable no longer being interchangeable, and tonics are a poor substitute. Gem refunds are also poor condolences, as many people used gems only to buy town clothing. Would it really be so much to ask that you find the models for the town clothing and set them to skins that can be applied to specific parts of an armor set, much like the current skins? Or at least provide a clear explanation as to why it would be impossible, even given time? As a forewarning, clipping is not a fair excuse, as the game is already littered with clipping issues.
If you want your customers to respect you, and continue to feel safe to buy in the gem store with trust that the content they purchase and its qualities will be preserved, please take the time to address this issue in a way that doesn’t brush under the rug the concerns of the player community.
That’s not entirely true.
The preview system used to allow previewing all armor types at the same time. There were some clipping issues at times but I never noticed anything glaring like a giant gap in the midsection or anything this seam talk would seem to imply. Hell, if you are worried about that, you can already find minor examples within a single armor class: wear aetherblade heavy leggings and whispers heavy breastplate on a female human. I love the look but there is in fact a tiny gap on the backside where you can see the environment through your character. So if that is already tolerated, I don’t see a big deal with allowing you to equip town clothes with potentially “conflicting seam” armor. If something looks funky I just won’t wear it… and if there is really some huge problem (which I doubt) Anet can just make a restriction that you have to wear only town clothes if you decide to use a piece. Anything is better than this solution.
Yeah, I’ve never really understood it myself since you can make plenty of sets within armor weights which make it clear that two pieces were not meant to go together (unfinished seams that just sort of cut off, clipping everywhere), and I used to love messing around with the locker when that was an option. There is a difference, though, between previewing armor on a character and actually equipping it and using it, so I don’t want to assume that there are no technical limitations making it hard to do.
That’s not entirely true.
It’s moot point though. They could have said, “town clothes can now be used in battle. The wardrobe will support this like armor skins.” That would have made town clothes more valuable without taking anything away from them. They could even just share the hats and be ok.
In other words, they did not have to mix clothing and armor at all. The town clothing changes are completely anet’s decision now and not the consequence of past choices.
That’s true, and admittedly I didn’t think about that because it seems almost too obvious—I was mostly responding to the idea that making a skin useable is easy. I think you’re right and it really would add more value, especially if the hats and glasses could be unlocked for both outfits and armor. If it’s not possible to handle things this way, I would be interested in a clarification as to why.
Im still calling this an April Fools joke.
Until it happens or the post is made on the second that says “Gotcha!”, Im going to refrain from hating on this any further.
I remember your tricks, ANet.. elaborate as they are..
Decided to capture a few mix-n-match clothes images for solidarity. Don’t mind the cliche color scheme… usually it’s more interesting but I’ve been into the devilish look lately (another reason why clothes shouldn’t be made into undyeable tonics):

Ok, the armor/weapon skins bit will be fine. I’d love to get some of the armor and weapons that I’ve been keeping just for the skins out of my bank.
But! Big, big but! I am aghast at the change to town clothes. Not surprised because apparently there isn’t a single solitary roleplayer at ArenaNet. Town clothes have been poor since day one and now they’re basically making them just awful. It took me forever to find a set that I liked since I hated the little flirty skirt that came with a human female and I do not want to look like a pirate or a chef. I want clothes that you wear in town, like all the other townspeople you see. I also remember that they said that there wouldn’t be any outfits in GW2 that characters couldn’t get. Well, that statement didn’t turn out to be true. And now this all or nothing garbage.
I was suspicious when they started making them all for the Costume Brawl, but then they made a few for folks like me who want to roleplay, not do silly games. But this is just… bad.
I loved this game when it came out. The town clothes had great potential. I liked the game play. The world was beautiful. Now.. I dunno. Game play has become dodge or die, which I loathe. I’m reading about the new changes to traits/runes/sigils/etc. and I don’t see that changing that dynamic at all. The art is still lovely, but I’ve seen the whole world many times over now and we seem to not be getting any more world. (Maybe when the living story fires up again) And between the Costume Brawl focus and this all or nothing mess, my lovely white shirt and riding pants and boots are going to be “use one at a time” endless potions? Yuck! That is not a solution. That’s more of an insult. More the fool me for buying them, I guess.
In their defense, due to the way town clothes are currently set up, it does sound like a huge programming nightmare to recreate all these things.
However, I do agree that it’s really not cool due to the way people spent real money and had this stuff changed.
I think I could be Ok with the “All or nothing” if we can still get the Boots, Gloves and Head items to play with. I mean as it stands right now, the Chest and Legs of most costume items are one piece already… Unless it is only a chest item.
I think you should just leave the individual items alone. Like the Khaki pants and the different shirts and hoodies.. At the very least, Create “All or nothing” sets with the tops and bottoms in all combinations so that it is possible to get the same look we had before…
MOST people’s mix and matches are done with the outfit of one set with the hat of another or a standalone hat.
GW1 worked that way with costumes.. having the body outfit, and then the mask/hat.
is THAT possible Curtis? Have 2 slots, 1 for torso 1 for head slot for costumes?
The tonic crap needs to just go. You’re going to take away a separate paperdoll I had for these items that took no bag space, and fill my bags with tonics instead.
Curtis pls
I believe in you pls don’t let them turn my clothes into potions
Who here enjoys drinking khaki cargo short tonics?

In reality, that sounds awesome. Not so much in guildwars however…
So in the video I saw the dev wearing the seer’s top. Which is a skin unavailable in PvE. Is that just because the dev has it unlocked or will there be a way to get these skins now? If it’s just because the dev has it unlocked then the video will be there taunting us forever. “You can get any look you want now! Except this one.”

PvE and PvP skins will no longer be separate. That skin may only be earnable in PvP still—I’m not sure—but if you have it you can wear it in PvE.
Ouh, 10 pages already. Would someone answer here or PM me if knows what is the point of restricting classes to use other tier of armor skins now? For example, medium can’t wear heavy skins now, because dev said thes need it for making noticeable difference in fight. I’ve replied that we’re not looking the armor but the skills thes use or the mini icon on tagging anwyay – had no answer in that.
So now on, in the name of Customization, any chance for us to use other tier looks (without stat change)?

The cost to transmute a single piece of armor is going to be 7 gold.
125 gems = 5 Transmutation Stone
1 Transmutation Stone = 25 Gems
1 Wardrobe Charge = 3 Transmutation Stones (or 75 Gems)
1 Wardrobe Charge = 7 goldSo to change your entire outfit will cost you 35 gold each time. O_O
My math has to be wrong…About the same as it costs now. And that is only to transmute new skins to armor pieces, not to equip new armor. Last I looked, it was ~9g per 100gems with 200gems buying you 5 crystals. You needed 6 crystals to transmute a whole set of gear so that would end up needing 400gems or ~36g to transmute a whole set with an extra 4 for any other gear you might want to change.
Thing that bothers me is this it never cost me 36g to transmute a low level full set heck 2 or so starter zones completed and i was able to at least transmute a set under lvl80 for a caracter now however i have to pay a fortune and contrary to popular believe not every player in the game have that kind of gold. Even tho the wardrobe system makes things easier i see less people using it really because of cost. Should have just left stones as it was 1 stone per lock for a low level item and 1 crystal per item over 80 that way you get the benifite of the new system and no drawbacks.
Disappointed to see that outfits will have to be worn as a whole. I always liked the whole mix and match to find the best outfit sort of thing gw2 always had.
Though I do now sorta regret not picking up some of the outfits and town clothes I liked in the past list the mad king thorn one, since in the past since I never really RPed in gw2. town clothes were pretty useless to me.
Now I may have to go and pick up some glasses and fluffy hats.
(edited by Questionable.4631)
I do like the look of the wardrobe system but a tonic for a full costume! Really!
I guess Its down to not allowing mix combinations of town clothes to be used for any class weight in combat, Having say 3 different classes running at you wearing the same clothes might panic a few players while they stumble selecting the 3 to know what classes they are, If the 3 were to jump and run around each other then you have no idea to who is who till they attack, sounds like fun
A little added note here, Outfits will still respect the ‘hide helm’ toggle so you can absolutely wear Wintersday or Mad King outfit without the hat or pumpkin.
What about the outfits that don’t have a helm, like the regular town clothes every character had. Can we still combine other helmets with them? Because I really enjoyed dying my norn town clothes white and red, combined with the festive hat for Christmas.
i personally think the Basic stones should give 1 charge, and the Crystals should give 5 charges. all armor changes below 80 should cost 1 charge, and level 80 armor changes cost 5 charges. this way, basic stones still allow SOME use for level 80 armor sets, but still dont end up costing us a ton.
I agree with this so much. Or even just 3 charges per crystal.
Every 10 levels, all of my characters require 4-10 stones to keep their look. Its incredibly important to me that my characters look how I want them to, or at least look nice. For example, I buy cultural armor for every Sylvari I make at level 1 because I can’t stand them in other armors.
Not everyone shares my playstyle, and that’s fine, but I know I’m not alone. I’m happy stones are usable for level 80s now, but low level characters didn’t need to be thrown under the bus to make that happen.
For one I’m really against what is happening to town clothes. I no longer see me buying any other town clothes in the future because there’s no diversity I can’t mix and match boots, pants and hats etc. Also I’m very very disappointed in that things like the ornate ruched kitten and khaki shorts are becoming tonics that can’t stack. I mean seriously? Why can’t you convert it to a an armor skin for the chest or legs? It wouldn’t make much difference if it was town clothes(tonic) or armor since everyone could wear it anyways. What I was hoping when I first heard of town clothes in combat was the current town clothes system but just allowable in combat and turning only the weapons into consumables instead of toys. Personally this has put a bitter taste in my mouth and has really put me off playing the game since this was a lot of my fun mixing and matching various town clothes. I really hope you reconsider how town clothes have been implemented in your feature patch.

^ Now that suggestion I could get behind. I doubt it will go ahead since it would mean less $$$ for ANet, but it would be nice.
Was it really that hard to add separate “cosmetic” slots (like we have in the current system) for skins?
The more i think about all this the more i’m like “meh” tbh. :/
I’m just hoping they take the town clothes and make them proper skins. I’d just apply them on some blue gear and keep them in inventory. Annoyingly swapping each individual piece of armor to change. Still costing us more for something we already paid for but, at least we get the appearance.
Yeah if this is how they’re gonna do town clothes you can say goodbye to me buying any appearance stuff on Black Lion heh
…How is it that something can just tear away all happiness I had.
The traits already were way too unpleasant but I though, at least I’ll have my fluff.
Nope.
According to the faq on the support site I won’t get a refund for my halloween (all four) and wintersday costumes. I also doubt about my town clothes items since I gifted these to myself during the december gifting sale.
This has just been the worst. Worst feeling ever.

I don’t see how it would be less $$$ for Anet I mean I would be more inclined to buy more town clothes if they had mix and match. As the way they are proposing how town clothes work in their patch they might as well just kill off town clothes make all current ones tonics and never make any others, then only release armor available for all classes in the future if they really cared about money(trans uses).

1. Not happy with not being involved in the decision process with regards to the wardrobe, wearing ‘town clothing’ in combat, and then in consequence losing the ability to mix-and-match town clothing. These decisions should be put to the community to decide!
2. Anet has made tons and tons and tons and tons and tons and tons and tons of money thru the gem sales. Put this towards the devs and figure out a way so people can still mix-and-match their town clothing. Anet, write a letter to NCSOFT/NEXON (whoever) and let them know that this sort of action is irresponsible and will hit them hard in the financial sector. More importantly (imo) is that this future change is unethical to many, many players.
3. Start being more open about your design decisions. There’s no need for Anet to hide away and make decisions without the community being significantly and obviously involved. Give us weekly/monthly polls. We have bought the game, we have bought gems, secure your own quality of life (if you love gw2 like we do) and financial future by listening to your player base, i.e., the ones that are going to continue financing this game and ergo your careers.
Anet please do the right thing. And if you guys are struggling getting messages thru to NCSOFT/NEXON let us know and we can have a strong, stern word to them. They have their fingers in many pies and they perhaps need to get theirs out of GW2.
So as a ranger I have to stick to my long coats and forget of ever seeing my pants, because they are covered all the time by any chest piece I’m wearing. Great.
Also refunds wont make me happy. I don’t need gems. I wont be more happy after patch arrives because I’ll get 2000-3000 gems for my refunded tonics. I want to be able to mix and match them. Also my Dragon Shirt. That was a serial key. Who’s going re refund me that?
If they dont want to make town clothes as armor skins because they dont want to ruin class identity(all heavy/light/medium look the same with town clothes) then what about outfits? Every class looks the same in an outfit. Why can’t we look the same with our shirts and pants too?

If they are using “don’t want to ruin class identity” as a reason for the tonics then they shouldn’t have touched town clothes at all since everyone will be able to wear the mad king outfit, witch outfit, wintersday outfit(with no mix and match on any of them ofc) in combat as they have said. Which means they’ve already ruined class identity.

While I really love the implementation of a Wardrobe system and making skins and dyes account bound, I have to add to the voices of those who are absolutely against the changes to town clothes – I almost always have some bits of various outfits on when I wear them. I don’t see how mixing and matching armor (which will be allowed?) is any different than mixing and matching town clothes. Surely there must be a way to allow us to keep each piece separate?
Having individual pieces become tonics is just… I can’t support that choice at all, either. More junk to carry around, only having one endless tonic usable at a time… no thank you.
I hope ANet is prepared for refunds, because what many of us bought costumes/town clothes for – variety – just became completely useless.
Its been all been said, but here’s my 2 cents. The only reason I never really participated in town clothes was the lack of storage for alternate outfits.
With a feature like the wardrobe I would have loved to have bought a bunch of town clothes and made some really cool outfits. If anything, it seems like townclothes and wardrobe would go really well together.
I hope there is still some chance that this could still be reconsidered without an inordinate cost in development hours.
So I have three sets of the pirate captain armor. I always liked the looks of that more than the default town clothes. Of course I am not too excited that I’ll be forced to use the ugly boots that come with it. But that’s been covered.
Will I be able to get a refund for the extra copies? Or will it be a “welp, sucks to be you” kind of deal?
I’m thinking the latter, but figured I’d ask anyway. And this seemed to be the most appropriate thread for the question.
Anything A-Net? Response?
I dare you, if you take my fluffy hat boxing kitty away from me, you will find an original and totally working Big’Ol’Bomb in your office the next day! >:(
Seriously … just leave the town clothers as they are, better than THAT change it’s horrible!

Taking away the ability to mix and match town clothes is so bad it’s almost enough to ruin my happiness for the new system, some people have put a lot of time, effort and even some real life money into making their characters outfits and I really hope that you will reconsider this bad facet of what could be a very good update.
seems a shame for some to become tonics whilst others can only be worn in their entirity – is this a programming issue?
While I sympathize with people having a feature taken away, if I could offer a small “silver-lining” it would be that the moving of town clothing to skins that I can apply to armor might encourage developers to actually make more ‘town-clothing’ inspired skins for us to utilize. The majority of the player-base ignored these items entirely because you couldn’t wear them in combat, with that change underway I imagine them becoming more popular with the ‘normal’ crowd.
As for roleplaying, you could still transmute your ‘clothing’ armor onto something else and switch equipment when you want to dress down.

One would probably assume it is. It had the markings of a work-around. Maybe they ran out of time and had to prioritize other content?
I specifically bought my costume sets to be able to mix and match. Now I won’t be able to. If my customization options will end at dyes, this isn’t what I asked for.
In my opinion, the best way skins should work, is to allow everyone to wear everything. We already have to deal with clipping issues or non-matching armor (backpieces, cultural armor, achievement armor, gemstore gloves/shoulders/helmets, charr tails, etc.), and now that you plan to allow costumes in combat (which will fully hide the armor class), why not go all the way and allow us to equip pieces of costumes and other armor classes as separate piece skins? People who don’t want to use them won’t, but people who rebel to “tonic and full-set costumes” idea will be pleased with the alternative.
Please, ANet, rethink this idea. Huge part of GW2 experience is customization and this proposed costume change is displeasing a lot of people in its current form.

town clothes turned into tonics? no way or money back!!!!!!
I paid for them and not for one more tonic – can I claim my money back?? I hope so…
would really disapoint me if they don’t rethink about that point.

first of all thank you for the feature patch
You guys have been very flexible in the past, could you please re-think this move
We trust you anet, you can find another solution, something that does not involve turning items into tonics.
Make the un-available town cloths slots on the locker invisible for people who do no have the items or put them back for sale on gem store in a bundle to save space…
Fingers crossed
Hollgärd expresses his emotions about the town clothing changes: http://gfycat.com/HighPerkyBoubou
I think this is a terrible idea. I spent a rather large amount of money in the gem store and have started regretting every dollar. I mix and match sets on all 8 of my characters. I feel like I’m being cheated. This is a huge step backwards for development.
Say goodbye to some of my characters town set ups. sniff Santa….
First of all I have to say that I play a lot this game almost since start and I love it but…
I’m very angry of that, really…on my main character I have Aviator sunglasses, Dragon Emblem Shirt, Witch’s boots and Enchanted broom. And I use a lot these townclothes because I love them, but from now, I will get some kind of tonic and I won’t have that, really? :o
Why? I wouldn’t have any problem to be honest if I could use them too in combat, not only sets or townclothes.
And what kind of tonics they mean? Random tonics or some tonics about our character but with our townclothes? And if it’s like that, I guess we couldn’t dye it.
Hope they made it available, don’t delete/change or whatever they will with my townclothes.
The Dye FAQWith dyes becoming account unlocks, the demand for dye will decrease and unidentified dyes no longer will drop as loot but still will be available from the Mystic Forge and select in-game rewards.
Would it be possible to provide some specifics on what “select in-game rewards” might be?
Thanks!
Presumably the announced changes are going forward no matter what with the update in April; it’s likely to be too late to make any modifications between now and then regardless of the amount of negative feedback for the town clothes being changed so drastically. I really love the town clothes options as individual pieces and making them wearable in combat is great but sacrificing one functionality for another is disheartening.
So what are the chances that we might be able to mix and match our town clothes again someday after a little more work on the integration of the town clothes into the new wardrobe system? Maybe not now, or even a few months from now, but is there any possibility at all that the new “outfits” be given another look in regards to making them back into separate mixable pieces later?
Honestly this town clothes issue is the only thing I am disappointed in with the wardrobe changes coming up, the rest of it is super amazing and I really appreciate the work they’ve done to make skin collection and application more streamlined. It’s fantastic! Just, well, why muck up the town clothes like that? It’s basically stumbling at the finish line.
Let me mix my town clothes too!
I just see a lot loss of freedoms with this new system.
No more mix for my town clothes?
I’ll have to pay to use my sunglasses (transmutation required, no?)?
I’ll lose inventory rooms for toys and tonics?
Seriously?
I was hoping for a system like LotRO for the wardrobe.
I’m now totally disappointed. The more i play with ANet the more i lose…
And i didn’t see the information, PvP armor… will need to transmute too?
For Memories (thumbs attached)
Edit : i forgot the point where i used to do lvl79 for alternative skin sometimes, and now i would pay THREE TIMES what i was paying to do that…
(edited by Tshakaar.6429)
I haven’t played in a Year, as I am not a big fan of what has become the achievement system or what is the LS. But this is my personal taste. Also, there was nothing else to do for me anymore and pvp got boring. Before I left I wrote a big [idea] wardrope with nearly exactly the same suggestions to crete a wardrobe, as it has been announced yesterday.
When I read the announcement about the upcoming wardrobe I was excited. I thought about getting back into the game to catch all clothes. Finally an incentive" Yes, one for me and probably for a lot of other people as well, but not for everyone. But then I realized I would have to pay for everytime I cahnge my clothes. Somebody calculated the costs in ingame gold. It’s too expansive and just kills the fun for me. Even if I catch all clothes, I would not be able to change free at will. In my suggestion I already implemented the idea of an unlimited unlock with a multitude of stones. If an unlock of a complete set would cost around 50 gold (or 200gems), that would be ok. But to pay everytime it’s changed, just isn’t working for me. So I will not come back.
Somebody said a lot about company accountants, and what is more profitable for the company. Is it more profit if people like me come back and pay a lot of money for unlocking all clothes, or if some people pay once every 3 months to change their clothes…
Unlocks would give a lot of people an incentive to come back to the game, or to stay longer. The current planned implementation is just a better way of the old system and will not generate new incentives or profits.
My favorite town set was my wintersday outfit + glasses styled to match Chauncey von Snuffles…pity I can no longer wear said set.
Please,
Just ditch the “outfit slot” and let any individual piece go into it’s respective slot whether it was armor, town clothes or promotional.
I know you’re doing this so that people can still toggle to a different outfit during “downtime” without using transmutation charges, but that desire to change into these outfits will be gone when they can be used in combat.
They will go from “downtime” outfits to “all the time” outfits.
The desire to save us additional transmutations, while appreciated, is not required.
:)
