The purpose of this thread is to keep track of current theories for the search of Final Rest and be a reference for related threads (on reddit & here). I will update it from time to time as new information arises so that we all can figure out what we want to focus our efforts on as a community.

Please feel free to post below or in other threads if you have any compelling proof to add, cool suggestions or new/missing theories to add to the list.

Current Theories:

  1. Zho’Qafa Catacombs (1)
  2. Shadow Behemoth (2)
  3. Andarzbad (3)
  4. Hidden Boss in Dungeon (e.g.: Ascalon Catacombs)
  5. Zhaitan’s Rest POI in Arah
  6. Not in game loot-tables

Debunked Theories
Mystic Forge – Official dev response says it can’t be crafted. (4)

Official Responses
“The only hint I will give on FInal Rest is this: You cannot make it. It is dropped from a LARGE boss chest.” (4)

“It’s exactly as Linsey stated previously—it’s a loot drop from a specific (rare) boss.” (5)

Also if anyone high up wants to give us more hints… that’d be real swell.

Edit: Wow.. I have been neglectful of this thread, and you have all been putting some great effort in. I will update this post very soon to reflect this discussion

I think shadow behemoth is a good try
reasons
1. the staff looks like a scythe which could relate to the underworld
2. shadow behemoth is rarely done/bugged since if you look at timers for it they are almost always wrong

Thank you for your effort and for this post.

I, for one, love to see this from players and hope to see more posts improving and improving for players who have taken extreme steps to achieve the highest limits in this game.

Joe, this staff does NOT look like a scythe made out of the gargoyle’s wing. If you look carefully at the picture, the gargoyle has BOTH wings:

https://dviw3bl0enbyw.cloudfront.net/uploads/forum_attachment/file/15005/gw005.jpg

It’s just the bad angle that it sits at when it’s on the back of the toon. So it’s a gargoyle perched on top of the staff. Since it’s a full-blown gargoyle, Ascalon or SoD would seem the most likely place, IMO.

What is at Zhaitan’s Rest POI in Arah … every arah group I went with so far doesn’t go any where near that POI (if its the one I am thinking of). Is there an event that happens there?

I know its a long shot but has anyone considered the Arah story mode chest? Large boss + large chest … or some other story mode large chest?

I am also wondering where Zhaitans rest PoI is.

On a side note, with two people who confirm where the staff drops, each has a huge margin of difficulty. Lets consider the fact that boss specific drops are often rare. Shard of the deep, drops from Teq the sunless, is done many times a day, and i believe there aren’t too many (enough that it is cheap, but considering how often it is done, etc)

Now the second confirmation states that the staff drops off of a specific (RARE) boss. Key word here is Rare. If you go onto the offical wiki, youw ill find that there is only one boss type that is considered to be rare, that is the Legendary Bosses (they have the purple star around them). Now we have two things to consider now, open world and dungeons. Dungeons are done on a daily basis and many times, so the chances of dropping from there are slim. Same with temples. This leaves one event, Catacombs. Now there are two more problems. First the dungeon is still hardly done, a few weeks ago I started running it again and more than half of the people I gatherer had no idea it existed. Secondly, the drop rate could be really really bad. Third, it could drop off of the boss itself, not a chest.

So yes, if there are blocking stuck events then yes the final boss is rare

Hey, just thought i’d show you what I was talking about last night.

“Legendary

These creatures are very rare to see, they can only be found in dungeon instances or in Ruins of Orr group events and require an organized group and concerted effort to take down. They can be identified by a special purple starburst frame with two crossed swords around their target portrait. Notably, all members of Destiny’s Edge are legendary."

Source: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/NPC_rank

Secondly @wildcode, this bug occurs when you talk to the NPC right after he is done talking to the other npcs. This happens a lot with npcs. Happened to me in AC when we talked to a NPC right after she was talking to another npc.

But it seems that Catacombs are run pretty often. Doesn’t that kind of mean someone would have found it by now? (I can’t remember, do the main bosses in Story Mode leave chests?)

I really hope someone finds it and lets the rest of us know.

There are some extremely rare events that have odd triggers to them, like the one in Metrica Province’s lab where you have to first have the key (which is an extremely rare drop) then you have to know what to do with it to attune it, and then you have to know to open up the area with the creature in it to kill.

I don’t think this is the one that drops Final Rest by any means but I think there’s several others of these sorts of events that only a very small portion of the player population know about and even fewer actually have completed. It’s very likely a rare drop within one of these very rare events.

Makes sense with the Shadow Behemoth.

1. As you say, it’s a LARGE chest.
2. Nobody does this boss so maybe they wanted to give a reason to go there.
3. Lore reason, etc. etc.
4. Never enough people to spawn, could explain why it’s not on TP yet

I have only done the catacomb escort event twice in Straits of Devestation, but thats too soon to tell anything from that alone. I’ll still keep hitting it though if I’m in the area.
What I’m curious about is how many times have you (everyone) ran the event? Even if you just showed up to kill the eye.

Those two hints they gave us doesn’t really narrow down where we need to search.

They just need to answer two questions

1. What qualifies as a large chest? (There is no item in the game actually named ‘large chest’. Do the dragon chests count? Do meta-even chests count? Do dungeon boss chests count? She seriously made it MORE difficult to find with this clue, because large is subjective.)

2. Has the boss which drops this chest been discovered by the community at large? (Currently, we don’t even know where to look, it could drop from a boss people already know about and just be really really rare, or it could be that we need to look for a whole new boss)

It seems like it would have been found by now then, even with the current bug of the event stalling. In the beginning months he didn’t have a problem (I think, at least on my server, not sure about now though, since I haven’t tried that event in a long time).

I really wish they would give us some kind of hint. Anything, just so that we have some kind of direction to head in.

I’m curious if anybody has considered it might be in the Temple of Lyssa. I recently completed my personal story quest, and during the quest leg in Temple of Lyssa, Trahearne specifically said the temple was the final resting place of her followers or something like that. I forget the specifics of the dialog beyond that, but “final resting place” is word for word. I perked up as soon as I heard it. Apologies if this doesn’t contribute to the search, but I thought I’d mention it just in case!

That and they’re not exactly rare bosses, are they?

Does Zhaitan drop loot/chest? (I haven’t got past a couple PSs after Forging the Pact, so I don’t know what he does.) I highly doubt its from him, but he is a specific rare (due to Arah needing to be open) and large.

Named items like that can drop from the chest whatever your level. I’ve seen people get lvl 80 exotics from Thaumanova event during head start. And for example the Shatterer and the other dragon can drop lvl 80 exotics even if they’re not lvl 80.

Didn’t realize this was up, so im going to copy and paste my post.

I’m all for specific drops, but the way Final Rest has been handled, it has been less than satisfactory. There are so many rumors and two Anet comments that are a bit confusing. One states that it drops from a big boss chest (no specific terms, just big. Does big mean glorious, splendid, grand, etc?). The other states that it drops from a rare boss (what does rare mean? Does that mean legendary, champion, etc? So it doesn’t drop from the chest but the actually boss itself?). I’ve been running all these events non stop and I’ve never gotten it. Im at about 110% MF, I ran catacombs for about 3 weeks straight (getting bad drops every.single.time). I’ve done other world bosses and nothing seems to be dropping it. On top of this the entire gaming community has no idea where it drops. Not one single player can confirm where it drops, and it hasn’t even been found yet.
So please Anet give us some more info. Also any other players, please if you have any info post it here. Don’t say it dropped here, i want to see pictures (trolls are obvious).
I’m close to just giving up like the rest of the population. I’m pretty much the only person the server who runs the Zho catacombs event.

Yeah, I have to kitten and moan just to get enough people for that chain. I pop down to see if it’s up (Laddron and his friends dead by the first champion in the ravine), then spend 10-15 minutes yelling for people across various map and guild chats to come help.

We finally got a group together for it last night, spent forever killing these champions, and I got a green and a couple blues – just like every other time.

Our guild has been camping on Queensdale since the Behemoth event is running regularly. We’ve gotten a couple exotics, a few more rares and the usual junk.

So please Anet give us some more info.

No no no. This is the stuff guilds, and communities build themselves on. Secrets, discovery, experimentation. You young’ins may not recall, but the popularity of Mortal Kombat was largely built on top of kids trading info on the latest Fatalities, or hidden fighters. Earlier Final Fantasy games had a special mystique because there were hidden weapons, summons, or party members that could be completely missed and word of mouth or vague hints in magazines were your only real clues.

It already sort of sucks that we can just preview any armor or weapon in the game for any class at any level. There is no “wow” factor when finding a new skin because they are all available to window shop from level 2.

Game needs more things like this and more mystery. Get the players thinking and working together instead of following a list of instructions to get the thing they want. If you want specific, explicit instructions to duplicate in order to get a prize, then bake a cake.

Thats all fine and good, but its been 4 months since we go the hints, and noone has found it yet. I don’t think most of us in this thread want the exact location given to us from Anet, we just want another breadcrumb pointing us in some kind of direction.

You can’t really preview all armor without going to an external site. If you want the wow factor, buy something randomly from the TP. You still can’t preview all the items in the game without having bought (or looted) them first (excluding the white items and karma items).

(While I don’t support or endorse this: I wonder if we’d get some kind of response if we all sent PMs to some of the reds…)

Nobody’s asking to have the precise answer handed to us. We’re just looking for a little bit more specificity than “it’s from a boss with a chest.” After this long, I think another hint is long overdue.

I’m distinctly reminded of a similar situation in a recent MMO. There was a highly desirable item (a “white whale,” if you will) which was shown to exist in the game, but (based on dev team reports) unknown extraordinary measures were needed to obtain it.

After several months and a thousands-of-posts superthread, it finally came to light that the dev team had never actually implemented a way to obtain the item, contrary to their own “hints” at how to obtain it.

It makes me worry that what we’re seeing with Final Rest is something similar – an entry in a loot table being a factor of 10 off, for example.
