Fishing in guild wars 2
is it a great idea or not
I’m not sure it has a purpose.
If they were to implement it sort of like the current in game activities then maybe.
I do have to say that for the short time that I tried WoW when it came out I did really enjoy fishing – but then I’m not sure it’s worth spending the time and resources on putting it in game when it doesn’t have any reason to be in game.
I think most of the previous generation have moved on from runescape, at least, I, and everyone that I have known that used to play have. Tis a pitty when the nostalgia strikes but being unable to go play the game I remember, oh well.
But… I don’t think fishing would really work, the primary point, I think, for fish and catchables to be introduced, would be as “Food” to “Heal” which this game doesn’t do.
i mean not so much runescape. you can put firemaking prayer and magic in it but than it’s runescape wars 2
For role playing it may seem cool but tbh all it adds is not enjoyment but work playing a video game.
I really enjoy fishing on videogames. It could be so relaxing if Anet knows how to implement it; not like a recolecting node, but like a minigame with loot that can be constantly played.
ok Thanks. and a off topic question how strict are you guys from gw2 with botting?
Botting deserves a ban and should be punished even harder in my opinion. Something like an IP ban
Yeah i’m not doing that :P but i see people doing it its easy to spot
As long as A) it doesn’t take too much development time B) it’s not mandatory (no special materials or loot), I’m fine with it. I’ll probably never do it but if others will why not.

Some people has a dynamic IP. And that mode doesn’t worked well on War Z while I was there. Random IPS constantly blocked? No, thanks.
dont know if you get a precursor as loot :P i got leaf of kudzu from a normal mob when the wurm event was
They’ve had plans for fishing since the start. – expansion content
Some Chefs out there may have noticed that there is not a single recipe with fish in it. Nor do fish in the rivers, lakes, and oceans of Tyria drop fish meat. This was all done intentionally.
We aren’t going to have fishing on release and we may not even have it any time soon (initial expansions/Live updates), but there is a place for it when the time comes.
But… I don’t think fishing would really work, the primary point, I think, for fish and catchables to be introduced, would be as “Food” to “Heal” which this game doesn’t do.
Why would fish be used for food that heals? Why wouldn’t it be used to create food that works in the same manner as all the other food in this game?

Is fishing any more work than gathering ore or lumber from harvest nodes? Or salvaging leather and cloth from scraps? Or farming champions? Or crafting? Or doing the Personal Story? Or exploring Points of Interest and Vistas for map completion? Or leveling? Or Daily Achievements? What makes fishing work? Is it the fact that you don’t like it? Or was there an objective reason you don’t want fishing added to the game?
heck i dont need fishing to give me stuff to make exotics
it just would be the ultimate chillax and hangout skill countless times i travel just to gave into the water and wish i could just plop down with buddies and fish have a good talk something instead of fighting
well if anything fishing could be used to make food i guess
i shall be posting pictures of all the places i enjoy chilling at (with bad graphics cuz i run laggy and at lowest settings)
To answer your question I think it’s a great idea! I love fishing in MMOs, and it definitely feels like it’s missing from GW2. I hope they do add it at some point in the (hopefully)near furture.
Fishing? Does that mean we’ll be changing the name to Gilled Wars?

Runescape was the kitten back in 2003
ANet could introduce fishing and use fish as crafting mats for cooking between 400-500
Smoked salmon anyone?

IMO, fishing always seems to end up being linked to botting. And very soon, we will be hearing complaints of low-level toons fishing in the same high-level area for 20+hrs etc, never responding to chat etc.
Personally, I hope GW2 never gets open-world fishing fishing but if it must be added into the game, I suggest the following:
- impose a limit which a character or account can fish in a day (i.e. Diminishing Returns). Lack of this will mean bots will be fishing 24hrs a day,
- limit the catch to literally just fish/seafood for the Chef profession,
- once awhile, make it such that a champ, lieutenant or veteran mob get fished out of the water and starts attacking the fisherman. The mob remains in the area until defeated.
- Don’t underestimate the ability of botters to automate!

I would like a fishing system that would enable you to be fishing all day if you want… sometimes you just need to relax and I like this way.
BTW your suggestions are nice, but maybe a spawning enemy is not the correct answer: I suggest someting like random clicks being asked from time to time to evade bots… like I have seen on some games.
I support this as same as much as like I do support the introduction of DIGGING.
GW2 would be just complete and perfect with Mining, Logging, Gathering, Fishing and Digging, the only left thing I personally could wish more after that is PLANTING, to get an own garden in the personal instance/ home
It was ANets first option to gain Dyes at early development stages of the game and I think it would be very cool of ANet to make resue of this in form of adding that gameplay back as a gather mechanic to add this way more fun to the game and giving with the same move players also more options of gathering for the daily, other then only looging trees, mining ores or collecting herbs n fruits
The tool for planting wouldnt be an item, it would be just Plant Seeds that you could get again by just harvesting with your sicle plants n fruits.
Sorry, I’m a little confused. We already have this. Spear-fishing. Harpoon-fishing. Trident-fishing. That’s as much legitimate fishing as killing a deer with a bow or rifle is hunting.
If we’re already carrying out this task, with tools designed for it, why add a separate mechanic that only lets you perform the same task slower?

What exactly is the point of using a fishing rod and bait, when we can swim down and kill the fish ourselves?
Did you fish in other MMO’s like runescape or WoW? It has a unique relaxing feeling

Let’s be clear. You’re specifically speaking of rod-fishing. That’s only one method of several. Fishing in general is something we can already do, using real-world fishing methods ported into the game.
I loved rod-fishing in FFXI, but they didn’t implement it redundantly on top of another fishing system.
Surely, there must be a relaxing activity to include that fills a function we don’t already have?

That’s the same argument as saying we couldn’t implement mining or professions as we can kill mobs and get the loot.
If I refered to other MMO’s which have mainly rod fishing system, I’m clearly saying Rod fishing = fishing. The rod fishing is relaxing, we can kill fishes YES. But, for example, we can’t compete about the weight or rarity of the fish we “catch” (in the actual case, we kill it and it dissapears)
Imagine a weekly fishing competition. Rare drops and related events during these fishing rod’s times. It’s tooo diferent from the idea of diving and killing fishes.
Let’s be honest, fishing system could be awesome for some people that already loves the essence of fishing. You don’t see the function of fishing? Well, it’s relaxing and another way of sparing time: and, for example, it could be a potential social tool. In most MMO’s I played, idle-jobs promote talking throught people.
Botting deserves a ban and should be punished even harder in my opinion. Something like an IP ban
IP bans are so easy to bypass, you can literally google how to get passed one. Worse yet, IP addresses change often and it’s possible for a perfectly legitimate customer to get the same IP address someone else was banned from.
The worse ban they can do is a MAC address ban and even that can be solved with a simple google search.

Worse they can do is that + account ban.
Someone that dense is actually a great source of revenue. Won’t be long before they get banned again and they’re off to give Anet another $50.
It’s funny that people will spend $50 + the time needed to circumvent the MAC ban, but they exist and as long as they pay the stupid tax, honestly, what can be said.?
What can be done other than to smack them like a piñata for all they’re worth? Three things can happen:
1. Stupid learns to keep their stupid in check.
2. Stupid pays recurrent $50 stupid admittance tax for every ban stupid earns for themselves.
3. Stupid get’s tired of paying the stupid tax and takes their stupid somewhere else.
Win/win.
How about instead of fishing, fish mobs drop fish meat? Then we can just go spear fishing instead. That would be more fun than treating fishing like gathering nodes.
Monster Hunter and Zelda had the right idea with a simple way of fishing. Just make the view adjustable (so we can look at the purdy scenery), and make the bobber huge.
If Anet builds on that, chances are, they’ll make it even awesome-r. I also fully support a spear fishing/harpoon option. Options are nice.
I feel like spear-fishing is so empty of significance… We would be limited to monster-farmed spawns… Rod fishing can be more deeper…
Another item that was in a long list of ideas when the game launched that I and others asked for in the suggestion forums that is now thrown out.
Fun idea, but anet keeps saying they won’t do what other mmo’s have already done. And fishing with a rod for fish is already done
Add it as an activity/minigame, give points based on the size and number of the fish caught, and have little fishermen merchants where ever they have fishing spots that will sell the specialty fish of that area for cooking purposes(new recipes requiring specific fish would be needed), and will exchange some minor goods in exchange for fishing points…or even some really good stuff in exchange for a /ton/ of points(dragonite ore, bloodstone dust, obsidian shards, various crafting materials, etc.)
My favorite fishing system was Breath of Fire 3/4’s system. It was entirely possible for you to neglect it completely, but if you /chose/ to fish, you could work your way to some great rewards, and the fishing mini game itself was fun. Sometimes I load up BoF4 just to fish again.

Well, in the two games I played with fishing (WoW and LotRO) it was more work, or at least more tedium, in that I had to hover my mouse over the bobber ready to click it when a randomly timed effect occurred. So I couldn’t chat with friends because that meant taking my hand off the mouse to type. Thus it became excruciatingly boring to sit and stare at a point on my screen waiting to push a button.
I’m sure there’s a fun way to implement it and that this game will try to take out the parts that aren’t fun. But until that happens, no thanks!
No, too casual! Spend your recsources on somthing useful please.
hell yea! i would love more active skills rather than just crafting! fishing on its own might not have a full purpose though it would need to be combined with hunting and be a part of that
I have loved fishing in the games that offered it. I hope this: (Some Chefs out there may have noticed that there is not a single recipe with fish in it. Nor do fish in the rivers, lakes, and oceans of Tyria drop fish meat. This was all done intentionally.

I very much enjoyed fishing in WoW, and would like to see this in GW2.
Fishing could supplement the lower tier materials of all crafting disciplines, with greater chances of better rewards higher level. Rare awards such as recipes, dyes, minis, food, fishing poles & lures. Possible very rare chance at level cap of precursor and ascended box.
It would be a nice perk as we wait on Wurm & Tequatl events instead of costume brawls/champ trains all the time.

Fun idea, but anet keeps saying they won’t do what other mmo’s have already done. And fishing with a rod for fish is already done
Funny that they say that but they are doing it anyway by rehashing the very experiments that have already been worked through years ago by many a company under the hood.
Wonder what could possibly harm the playerbase by listening to us about things like fishing. They could have minigames, cosmetics expand it into housing and props, they could even have fishing poles and yes they could make money off this too.
I had posted this on the Crafting Forum about a week ago for discussion. https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/crafting/Fishing-as-a-Gathering-craft-and-Cooking-500/first#post3655782 But not as many hits since that forum is not heavily visited as this one.
im for fishing and im for anything that is new even pet battles as long there is accivments it gona be played a lot
IT HAS A PURPOSE, FISHING IS THE ULTIMATE CHILL PROFFESION, pleaz make fishing spots not like normal nodes.
like respawning pools or something.
and signature fishing hat! all that water, all those hamboigas
As I said above, it’s only good for chilling out if you can actually chat while you do it. I understand the need to have the player actively doing something to make the fishing happen so as to avoid afk gathering, but having to watch a bobber with intense concentration to the exclusion of doing anything else is not terribly relaxing for me other than lulling me into a desperately bored stupor.
They could put fishing rods in the gem store. They’d break after a certain number of casts, causing a constant revenue stream. In order to get the higher tier fish you would have to upgrade them with dragonite ore and refined ectos.
There’d be an extremely rare chance that you would reel in the precursor for any underwater Legendary weapon.
I’d like to see it as a mini-game instead of sitting on the bank hitting the fish button.
I’m all for it as long as I’m not pushed into an overflow because 30 people are standing around a lake fishing. See the thing with other resources is that they require you to be mobile to get them and are limited. If I want to do a world boss event and get pushed into overflow because people think this is now a fishing game I’m not going to like it very much.
I don’t think casual fishing would function within the densely populated zones of Tyria. If you consider WoW or LotRO casual fishing, you can’t ignore their less densely populated zones. Perhaps something more dynamic would work because those Coho Salmon need to be fished!
A rod and net as new weapons with full 5 slot skill bars?
The rod for fishing from the shore and a net for fishing underwater?
2H rod and net?
1H rod and net dual wielded?
They’re special! They got aspirations.”

i like the idea of fishing rods as gathering tools and infinite rods in the gemstore. also agree with psientist, both wow and lotro had good fishing. fishing should be open world with a minigame fishing competition for fishing related prizes, either skins like fishing hat or rare rod skins. the underwater precurser would be funny if u also had the chance to catch old useless boots.
I feel fishing would also compliment cooking, not enough variety of recipes, theres not a single fish in any of those recipes
I agree, right? And some kind of fishing competition weekly event has potential to be funny!
