Personally i am abit worried why are NCSoft and Arenanet not on the same wavelength. NCSoft hinting expansion coming, and Arenanet saying no expansions
are currently planned??

Below is the quote from NCSoft:

“In terms of box sales and microtransactions are still very strong, and of course we are preparing an expansion pack but in terms of when we will actually launch it, it’s something we are still monitoring… We are looking to the performance of the game and then we will decide what will be the best time to do the launch.”

Yet immediately afterwards, this appears:

Unfortunately developer ArenaNet doesn’t appear to have got the memo, with director Colin Johanson saying as recently as March that none were currently planned.

Aren’t both NCSoft and Arenanet both responsible for GW2?
Why are they saying different things? lol

I wouldn’t be worried. Colin is talking to players and fans. NCsoft is talking to investors. The way you communicate with each is completely different.

Preparing an expansion pack from an investor point of view means planning it, not necessarily programming it. Preparing an expansion pack from Colin’s point of view is actively working on it.

It’s not a priority to Colin, who’s looking at what we’re doing RIGHT NOW. Colin is looking short term. NCsoft is looking to the more distant future, in sort of a business plan.

Interpretation is that an expansion will happen at some point, but it’s not actively being worked on now.

I think you just found the KEY problem here. In another thread everyone was discussing why we think that Anet has been so slow on fixing all of the serious issues with this game and I thought it was most likely a managerial issue.

I think you touched on it right there. The problem I don’t think is the Devs as I once thought I think it’s also management because there’s something that’s not quite right in the decision making process and the organization process of the patches that’s made me wonder for a while now about their decisions.

Lol actually i was the one who started that “Why Anet was slow in fixing issues” and yea i saw your post, and yea it could also be a managerial issue like you mentioned, and this post here sorta re-enforces your theory too.

@tigirius – I and others have been begging for an expansion of the DE’s especially those that have very long chains. Give them a little daily chest reward & across the board give each of the meta-bosses & themed events a chance at a rare drop of themed gear/weapons.
If loot is what drives the community to the point of population density requiring it; then play upon that and reward unique items at these dead/unpopulated events/maps.
Sorry for the digression.

It ‘feels’ like a communication breakdown between the two parties. We all know that Anet does not ‘tip their hat’ to what is coming out or when. On the flip side you have NCSoft with its shareholders that are interested in profits. NCSoft has made a very broad statement that sounds like something to pacify any that may be nervous about their investment.
And just because they are working on an expansion doesn’t mean it will be released any time soon.

I would like to see 2 new classes in a expansion, 1 more heavy and 1 more unique, can wear all 3 types of armour but skills change depending on armour type?!?

2 JP’s per zone at least, some new dungeons if you must (but TRY to make them fun), WvW goodies, some PvP love and a few surprises/shocks…

^^^Buy this tomorrow, instantly…THATS WHAT I CALL A REAL EXPANSION…would pay $60 no problem…

No, not at all, what I asked for isn’t a new game at all…I have pretty much asked for more of the same…all the mechanisms are in place already and it should be far quicker to create new zones…the hard part is the creativity bit…ie does it end in a dragon, whats the story that leads upto the dragon, the new lore of the continent etc…

The only other hard part would be the 2 new character classes…

Expansions are usually like this. At least with WoW and Guild Wars 1. Entirely new continent, new classes etc. This is almost what I expected when we were promised an expansion worth of content

At the rate we’re getting things added I think we’ll be fine without an expansion for the time being. This isn’t a static world, like WoW for example, where the only you get more content is through expansions.

The rate of permanent content additions have been highly over-exaggerated. There hasn’t been much in the way of permanent content open world additions since launch which was what I read in multiple interviews all thru-out the beta process. So one has to ask, what happened? Why did the focus change so dramatically in Nov 2012 and why has nothing more then an experiment with living story been the new focus in January?

This might not be like WoW however when you’ve done 80% of the repeatable open world content it become redundant and thus not fun. That’s what people are complaining about generally.

If I thought an expansion would improve the game over all, fix 90% of the class bugs, improve the ui, give the open world a large number of DEs/metas improve loot overall I’d be all for it, but the past shows that there’s a serious managerial problem (I can only guess) that would most likely make this expansion full of hype and not fix a darned thing, so I’m not really impressed with the idea. If they are doing so well with sales post launch even today, why are these major issues not being fixed without an expansion?

Thanks, Regina. Me thinks the Community Relations and/or Marketing teams should have a standing “Damage control” meeting for every quarterly earnings call, with pre-made templates for statements that are likely to be misinterpreted. For example, I can predict that, 3 months from now, the quarterly call will mention a GW2 expansion (with as much or more details as this time). I can predict that the same speculation will run in the forums. Why not preemptively have some materials ready for that occasion?

Well, there’s no monthly charge and no expansions so far. So it’s 1 out of 3 at the moment if you use the black lion market. If there is an expansion, you can choose if you want to buy it and continue to use the BLTC to make it 2/3. You could decide not to use the BLTC anymore or to not buy the expansion and remain at 1/3. No one’s twisting your arm.

Not only that, but there’s nothing you NEED to buy from the BLTC to play the game. If there are items you WANT like weapon skins or trans crystals, you can convert in-game gold to gems to buy them. No one forces you to buy gems. So 0/3 at the moment, there will never be a monthly fee and buying expansions/gems are optional. No one is forcing you to spend a dime more than the cost of the box.

There’s a couple of things you have to understand.

GW1 was controversial at the time because it had no subscription in the west. That was how it was done in 2005. How can you run an MMO without subscriptions, how do you pay for the servers and bandwidth? How do you make a profit on that model? These were investor and industry questions at the time. The answer was a series of relatively quick expansions and a cash shop.

So GW2 comes along and all the investors/analysts expect the same model, initial release followed by a quick series of expansions. And no one is willing to listen that it’s going to be different this time as well. ANet can explain that this time they are relying on their beefed up cash shop to pave the way and an expansion is sometime in the future. The analysts looking attentive will nod in the affirmative and then ask, “so when is the expansion coming out?” And NCSOFT wanting to make sure that the story that goes out isn’t “GW2 expansion delayed, stock downgraded” assures them that an expansion is coming but it’s being timed to boost sales only when it’ll be needed. ANet rolls their eyes and reiterates that their isn’t one coming soon and we wait another 3 months for the dance to begin again.

We are heroes. This is what we do!

I’m sorry you’re out of things to do in-game, but there are many aspects of the game that still need work. There are still traits that flat-out don’t work, for example. I’d much rather they get those fixed before they start diverting resources to the development of a new expansion.

I appreciate your desire to have things fixed before an expansion.

I am most definitely on the other side of the fence on this one. Personally, I run in to bugs very very very rarely. I can remember two bugs that I have run in to since January? That is not to say there are not more bugs out there, but the game can definitely be enjoyed as is. I log in almost daily for several hours and have a lot of fun.

I would love to see new areas open up, new professions, new story! For me the story and areas trump the new profession though, that’d just be a nice little extra. There are so many areas on our map we cannot venture too, and two (at least) entire continents that we do not have access to yet.

If I could pay $50 and have all the bugs removed in the game or pay $100 and have a real expansion? I’d pay the $100 hands down.

Factions, Nightfall, Eye of the North or am I counting wrong.

Technically, Eye of the North was the only true expansion. Prophecies, Factions and Night Fall were all campaigns. That said, I consider Factions and Night Fall to be expansions, as they expand on the existing world and framework.

They were sold in store separately. I have no idea if the original game was required or not but they were displayed side by side like other PC games with expansions.

If the original game is required to play them, then it’s an expansion.

We are heroes. This is what we do!

They aren’t, they’re stand alone campaigns, they are connected yes and expand on the game but technically not expansions. Only EoTN requires 1 of the campaigns to play, therefore only true expansion.

Back to WoW, make GW2 fun please.

So you could by Factions and not own the original game and it would be playable?

Yep. Both Factions and Nightfall were playable out of the box without requiring you to own the original Prophecies.

So if there will be no expansion for 6-12 months.
how will Anet keep players in the game with NO real PvP and Pve that have NO end game.( don’t tell me it free to play they can come back because if they are not playing they are not using the gem store).
I’m with NC soft this time this game need an expansion but with BIG CHANGES .
Anet are saying they want to improve the game. but the living story is doing nothing .
Anet should research and see why the players are leaving the game before doing anything.

What if current GW2 expansions would be introduced in such model? Would people suddenly stop complaining that the game released expansions?
Those games had no new engine, no new graphics, the same mechanics, the same world and it also connected the continents. While you could just buy one and miss out on the rest, you can in the same way, not choose to buy expansions.
So in my eyes they are and are not standalone games at the same time. If someone asked me to count expansions for GW1, I would count those in as well.

Just as Assyrian said, you cannot just dump an expansion out there with just 400 new hearts that work the same, with the same bunch of scripted events triggering more scripted events. Who do you want to fight? Yet another dragon?

Ah “soft” has the iron ball grip of death on “net” I see….

Or, they’re saying exactly what Anet has said themselves.

They’re interested in and will likely produce an expansion or so in the future, but will be continuing to strengthen and reinforce the current game at present.

GW2 is still fresh off the assembly line, very new and young for an MMO. It’s not even a year old yet.

Even so, we’ve been getting small free content updates on a monthly basis no more then a few months after launch.

The story is really being fleshed out. They’re very devoted to the core game right now, and that’s awesome.

What they’ve done and what they’re doing now is nothing short of incredible.

That’s a nice way of looking at it, fitting for a player or maybe even a dev, but the decisions about when/how and IF they make an expansions arent made by those people, they’re made on the business side of things. The If is important because that quote only does PR lip service to any plans about expansions. They might decide not to produce one.

Someone translated it quite correctly as “we’ll do it when we think it will have the most impact on our revenue – currently that’s not the case”.
