The fact is that the ONLY place in the world you need that gear for is the place you need to farm to get it. This is completely different from gating in other games.

As an example, I can see ALL the fractal content without any of that gear. I can’t see later levels of the same content, but that’s completely irrelevant, since if I want to, I can get that gear.

So for those who aren’t grinders, I checked out the fractals, not only did every fractal but got every achievement except the swamp one, and I’m done. And I don’t have a single piece of ascended gear.

The content isn’t gated. People’s minds are gated.

Not this crap again… Typical gear treadmills force you to keep farming forever to keep having the best in slot gear or you won’t be able to see the end-game content (a treadmill is an endless walk). In GW2 you can see every content available even if you’re wearing full rare gear, e.a. as soon as you hit lvl80. Arenanet introduced ONE challenge that keeps increasing in difficulty IF YOU WANT and now it’s a treadmill? Who forces you to keep increasing the difficulty at which you play fractals? Who forces you to do fractals to get better gear needed for other content? Hey, the answer to both questions is: noone!

Seriously, get over it and stop copy/pasting other whiners’ opinions. Time to start enjoying the game for a change.

Couldn’t care less. The stats don’t make you OP, and for a long time I had yellow stuff.
Ascended were implemented to please the QQ fans of geartreadmill from the others MMORPG.
I wasn’t a big fan of fractals and now that I can have the purples with only doing the dailies it’s no big deal.
Eventually the purples may be buyable on the TP later.

You get vertical progression in the form of a stat that doesn’t do anything for anything besides the one dungeon

Although granted, the new “ascended” grind to obtain the arbitary “laurels” currency forces you to have to do such difficult crud like dodging and craft 10 anything makes it completely impossible to play the way I want to kitten

But then I can buy a full set of exotic at 80 with gold or karma and be good to just sit around and complain on the forums about the next thing I want, so at least there’s that.

Do they have to continue til they are blue in the face to get it through that thick head of yours that The ascendant gear is the only tier you will get? Just because they are giving you the gear piece by piece doesn’t make it a gear grinding game. If they add another tier of armor then you can legitimately call it a gear grinding game. It is not a gear treadmill. Yet. The simple fact is, this short into the life of the game, they have added both Gear and Dungeon progression. You can argue the means of acquiring the gear, but, Progression is already a fact.

And neither happened over the entire life of GW1 to date.. and it’s something I was surprised to find shoehorned into their “Design Manifesto” for this game.

I’m neither pro, or con. Just, for myself, after 10 years of Dungeons in various places, nothing is getting me into one here. Nothing. So.. don’t need the gear, whatever happens.

Fractals is optional content for players wanting stuff to do.
Sure there is a gear treadmill (of sorts) but only in the sense you need Agony infusions as you get higher up the fractal ladder. The gear itself is all but the same stat wise to decent exotic and is far from being “must have” outside of Fracs.
Therefore its Choice Wars..and if you want to challenge yourself in Fracs then sure jump on the mini treadmill if you want.
Outside of that there is really no need, not even WvW as the stats increases are all but insignificant in reagrds to being competitive but again, that’s just a players choice.

Fact reamins all content is playable and achievable without Frac gear.

But.. as time goes on I am pretty confident thee will be some kind of gearing element introduced because at some point new content will need to be introduced into the game to keep challenging us and allowing our toons to move on rather than stagnate.
But a treadmill approach it does not need to be and having seen how GW has worked over the years I am fairly confident they will attempt to keep such things to a minimum and balance checked as they go along..

Are you serious? You could only get to 80 by exploiting or using a SPECIFIC ranger skill or using a Revive Orb = cash shop. The “recent” change is a good one and it was needed since day one. The ‘treadmill’ is pretty much limited to fractals, as most people have pointed out, which is completely optional. If you needed to do fractals to get agony for world encounters, then I’d understand your issue.

But as of now, to progress in FotM you need to do fractals, and that sort of makes sense.

In the future do more research on what gear grinding really is.. Wow has that down perfectly… I’m not talking about piece by piece.. I’m talking about full sets to the next full set….. ect..

Just a little fun fact, WoW only added 1 tier of gear from vanilla(legendary with BWL) to Wotlk(added heirlooms) as they correspond to this game. They had grey, white, green, blue, epic, legendary. The players ended up calling the increasing stats on raid armor “tiers” and it stuck. Remember that those “tiers” of gear are not a different quality, which is EXACTLY what ArenaNet is saying. They might not introduce a new tier of gear(different color name) but they can certainly increase stats if they so wish. In fact they left that door wide open with infusions. They might not add better statted gear but they can add new infusions with better stats.

A gear treadmill can certainly exist without gated content(IE needing to do MC before BWL). The ONLY thing required for a gear treadmill to exist is new gear, items, etc with better stats. ArenaNet is handling it different than WoW did but the end effect is still the same; people are grinding to get that next piece of better gear. Thus it is a gear treadmill. Piece by piece or entire sets does not matter as long as the effect is the same. You can ask people to do more research all you want but if you yourself are wrong…

Finally, ArenaNet can say whatever they want but they still won’t be trusted. They’ve already tossed away their manifesto and gone back on their own statements. Remember when top statted items were supposed to be easy to get but cool looking skins were hard to get? Or how about having as little grind as possible? Then just to top off that they put in DR that makes grinding so much worse. Most recently they made statements in a reddit Q&A that putting out ascended gear with only 1 way to obtain it was a large mistake, but what’s this? They decided to put in Ascended amulets with only one way to obtain them. I think you can understand why people can’t take ArenaNet at their word anymore.

Don’t get me wrong.. I coulnd’t care less about the stats I care only about the agony resistance needed ( in this case the gear needed ) to advance in the only difficult content that is left ingame for pvers.

As I mentioned I am at scale 80 already since a month. I don’t care about the new ascended stats. I care about the fact that fractals ( and actually it is only in fractal, where you are forced to have certain gear to advance) are a geartradmill.

I am afraid since dev’s said they will take the System of fractals and agony to create other new content. That new difficult content will be same as fractals.

You should agree that fractals aren’t RESTRICTED TO SKILL, THEY ARE RESTRICTED TO MISSING GEAR atm. This is a bad direction the game takes.. that’s what I am afraid off.. i don’t care about better stats.

To say it in other words.. I don’t think I’m a worse player than when I reached 80 but still I can’t even complete scale 50 atm because I don’t have the gear. Gear conected to daily so I need to grind em to get better gear to get higher→ tradmill…

Hope they don’t take this system for future content ( they said they would but after this update I hope they don’t)

Fractals become gear treadmill on last update. I know loads of player who don’t want this and love fractals ( on higher scales). The loot not worth it even on scale 80 you better go farm cof.

As mentioned atm it’s only fractals but they said they will take the agony dungeon to design new Content → so I’m afraid this new content will be geartreadmill as we’ll. Infact in WvW there are some diminishing returns on stats, i.e. your attack stats is scaled down (I have 4000 attack in PvE but only 3600 in WvW).

Still does not change the fact that gear treadmills affect WvW overall performance, nor the fact this game was touted as treadmill-free.
The game is great but this does not prevent me from being objective and noticing when the game is being turned into a wow clone (treadmills, fetch quests dailies, and soon to come wow-esque rated arenas).

What the game has now is the beginning of a gear treadmill. It’s not a gear treadmill yet fully but that will come. In WvW it currently isn’t an issue because there are only a couple of items with better stats that don’t make much of a difference yet. Once the complete set of Ascended gear comes out this will need to be re-evaluated.

GW2 isn’t following the traditional gear treadmill. This is probably true, but there is a gear treadmill started now. Just small and slowly. But moving slow is still moving. Just because it’s not implemented in full yet, doesn’t mean it isn’t there.

The future will tell how much of an impact it will have. It will not only be the gear itself but also the infusions that will have more tiers.

And then there is the obvious elephant in the living room that the people here are in denial about: The raise of the level cap that will come as Anet has already stated.

When you go from level 80 to 90 max. All your level 80 gear will be invalidated and you need to start all over again. I am sure that leveling from 80 to 90 will not take that long but again you will have to get level 90 exotics/ascended/legendary? gear.

So yes there is a gear treadmill, we only have seen the first step or two of it but before this year is over I am sure it will be a lot clearer.

Again, the impact of it is unclear at this time and they aren’t doing it in the traditional way at this stage, but a treadmill there is.

They did also say that there will be more content gated in the future besides fractals.

I think you need to ask yourself what of this content is WOW and whats just RPG?

at its core this game is still an RPG so it has RPG things ((hell Elder scrolls game’s are just a sieries of fetch quest))

its how there handling all the elements of this content (treadmills, fetch quests dailies, and arenas) that’s setting this game apart, not that there is a lack of it or not.

I ever since was a defender that gw2 is not that kind of game, since fractals were released I told ppl that it’s not since you don’t need any ar to get to lvl 80 (I’m there so don’t argue about that if it’s possible or not ) But after the update the game changed to what the dev stated now. I really think this is a bad direction the game takes and I’m as a former gw1 fan dissapointed and afraid that it goes in this direction.

You don’t enjoy the agony resistance treadmill of the fractals? Then just don’t visits fractals of level 10 and beyond, and enjoy the plenty of gaming content that GW2 has to offer and that is completely unrelated to agony resistance, instead.

Problem solved, you are welcome.

Now, can someone please proceed and close this thread, since it is as non-constructive as its 157.623 clones before? Thanks.

The problem is solved for now, but Anet already said there will be more content that will require infusions. The longer you say “just don’t play that content” the more content will be unavailable to a player. That is not a realistic point of view.

Anet just need to state clearly there is a treadmill started and people need to either accept that or not.

It’s a game forum. The truth is not to be found here.

Here are some points that may help you understand gear progression and why it is necessary and in a good place in GW2 right now:

  • Skins and titles are not a big enough incentive for the vast majority of MMO players to spend 100s of hours on
  • A typical gear treadmill requires exorbitant amounts of grind to progress in
  • A typical gear treadmill requires every player to acquire gear in order to experience newer content
  • A typical gear treadmill makes it difficult for newer players to do older content in order to catch up
  • A typical gear treadmill releases gear at a faster rate, making power creep a much larger problem

GW2’s gear progression is to a regular ‘old school’ gear treadmill as GW2’s dynamic events are to old school questing. It’s a much better version of the same fundamental idea.

  • GW2’s gear progression increases player retention rates as a large amount of players need tangible number progression to feel their play time is worth it
  • GW2’s gear progression is prestigious gear not expected to be owned by the masses, the majority of content won’t be balanced around end game gear
  • GW2’s end game gear progression is optional and therefore not needed to complete any piece of unique PvE content

According to the developers, GW1 was a stagnant game. Coupled with the fact that they never planned GW1 to have any PvE longevity heavily suggests that had they known about the number of players interested GW1’s PvE from the get go, they would have launched the game with long term gear progression.

Players with a strong preference for horizontal only progression were IMO at no point in GW1’s lifetime a target demographic. GW1’s shortcoming in terms of gear progression was a miscalculation that ANet probably deemed too difficult to fix later on, with a new campaign coming out every 6 months, each one with having to be balanced around players only having one, all or more than one campaign. Adding another big balance factor in terms of gear progression would have been reckless.

In the end, ANet never was against gear progression, it is only against forced gear grind. That never changed.

You don’t get it do you?

As far as I know there aren’t many threads about it. What I am complaining about is that: THEY MADE A CHANGE SO YOU NEED ASCENDED GEAR TO ADVANCE!

this is the change that is important.

Look I can play lvl 80 Fractals still:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYrtfwlZdeE

I don’t care about the loot→ I make more money farming cof than doing Fractals the loot doesn’t get that mutch better!

I care about the game and the direction. And this is another thread to all the threads that were up before because before ppl we’re afraid and told it is treadmill. Now it is confirmed that they want us to get a certain gear to go on. → I’m already at the cap since a month, I wouldn’t play fractals anyway I don’t care about em anymore. I care about the game…pls get this in your head…

Robert Hrouda.1327:

Each new piece of AR gear is meant to allow you to progress to further fractal levels, which have increasingly better rewards compounding with higher scaling difficulty.

This is the statement.

I ever since was a defender that gw2 is not that kind of game, since fractals were released I told ppl that it’s not since you don’t need any ar to get to lvl 80 (I’m there so don’t argue about that if it’s possible or not ) But after the update the game changed to what the dev stated now. I don’t need to care I have the cap for the next year + nothing left to do for me there. But I care in generally that this is the bad direction the game takes. So I hope I find supporters that are gonna make the dev rethink their new system.

thanks for your oppingons

How many times has Anet told you people that you will not get another tier of gear aside the ascended gear? Do they have to continue til they are blue in the face to get it through that thick head of yours that The ascendant gear is the only tier you will get? Just because they are giving you the gear piece by piece doesn’t make it a gear grinding game. If they add another tier of armor then you can legitimately call it a gear grinding game. In the future do more research on what gear grinding really is.. Wow has that down perfectly… I’m not talking about piece by piece.. I’m talking about full sets to the next full set….. ect..

I suggest you read the AMA. What Anet actually said was that we would have vertical progression in the game moving forward. Consider the concept: Vertical, the power level of the game increases; progression, it periodically and continually increases over time. It doesn’t matter if Ascended was the last tier. Vertical progression progresses. In order to make vertical progression progress they could do it through infusions alone.

And vertical progression is the definition of a gear grind. You saw it in GW2 as you leveled your character(s) or acquired gear from whites through exotics. The distinction with GW was that vertical progression stopped a max level with max level gear. That is no longer the case with GW2.

It matters not whether VP is by piece or by set. It doesn’t matter whether it’s fast or slow. It, itself, represents a non-optional gear grind. You chase the stats or you slowly become unable to play the game over time. Some people like this as it gives them a sense of progression. And, I think it’s fine to like it or dislike it. But, it’s really not an option to say we don’t now have a non-optional gear grind in GW2.

Anet just need to state clearly there is a treadmill started and people need to either accept that or not.

They already did give a clear and precise statement in the Reddit AMA right after the introduction of Ascended gear, but people tend to ignore it.

The agony resistance gear treadmill is for people who ENJOY a treadmill. Those players have a right to get some love from ANet, too. So, yes, I agree that ANet will give them another occasional treadmill in the future. Just as they occasionally release content for PvEers, for WvWers, for sPvPers, daisy pluckers, and so on. That’s just the way ANet wants their game to be, so we better get used to it (or play something different).

However, from all we know, and given all that content ANet has released since launch, I really cannot understand that people still come to the conclusion that, suddenly, ANet would start to ignore all of their customers beside “small customer group X” and only release content for that particular group in the future, when they can make much more money if they wouldn’t.

Now, can someone please proceed and close this thread, since it is as non-constructive as its 157.623 clones before? Thanks.

Urgh….
You know what? Fine. You win.

Omg this game has become a gear treadmill. I can’t advance in fractnal and do the same content I have done 50 times before without specific gear what should I do? I’m very concerned about the future too.

They promised us they wouldn’t introduce gear treadmill and now they are. Dungeons should not be excluded for those who did not wish to grind for new gear. This game is no different than any other MMOs who embraces gear progression. Is there a lawyer anywhere on this forum? Because honestly they went back on their promise and I think I deserve a refund.

The game’s dying slowly and it’d be gone the next time they release some more ascended gear omg i’m telling you gais it’s true!!!! Gw2 is gear progression!!!! Ah !! AH!! GAHHH!

PS. I don’t know what were you smoking but you don’t need Ascended gear to level past 50. I’m assuming when you say 50 you meant fractnal level 50. If you are that deep in, chances are you already have enough drops for ascended gear. hur.

I would like to see links to any of your suppositions re gear progression in GW1 being actual statements by any Anet management.

Until then, I will assume you really can’t speak as to what Anet planned, who their target demographic was, or anything else you are claiming.

“Suggests”, ’had they known" "probably"" IMO" etc is supposition, and does not, in any way, validate an absolute statement like “ANet never was against gear progression”

It is all opinion. In my opinion. Gear Treadmill is overstating what we have right now. Fact is, we do have gear progression needed for content progression, gating by mechanic (agony), and there is nothing new or innovative in that. That is everymmo, something GW2 told us they were not going to be, by my interpretation.

It opens the gate to becoming even more “everymmo”, in my opinion.

Ley lines. The perfect solution to deadlines and writers block. Now in an easy open Can.

The main reason ascended gear is not an issue in WvW yet is that there aren’t that many ascended items out and the stat distributions on ascended items are very limited. Once they expand stat distributions and release more items, like armors and weapons, players with ascended equipment will have a noticeable advantage in WvW. I just hope they add more ways to get ascended items for WvW players other than laurels, like spending a bunch of honor badges. But any way you slice it, getting ascended gear requires grinding in one way or another.

The reason so many people loved GW1’s pve is because it DIDN’T have long term gear progressions. It boggles the mind how clueless devs are about what makes a good game. GW1 was a much better game than GW2. And if what you say is true then the devs should have learned a valuable lesson and not created a gear grind in GW2.

But instead they went the route of every other lame gear grind mmo out. The world didn’t need another WoW gear / daily grind clone but that’s what they gave us.

Its extramly likely that with each introduction of new ascended gear it will be easier and easier to get untell it is just as comen as exotic by the time its done. And shortly after that they will start on the next tear.

And at that point any new content will be balanced for the now no longer rear or hard to get ascended gear as well as exotics (much like the rare/exzotic content now). the people who like chasing that carrot will be going after the new tear. Were people like me will be takeing it easy doing all the content with my mix of exotic and asended gear and just enjoying the game

It is all opinion. In my opinion.

It’s all suggestions, interpretations and implications here on this forums, even if someone quotes a dev. They have said that GW1 has become stagnant, and by the powers of logical deduction, which are looking at their stance towards gear progression now, and the lack of marketing towards a stagnant/horizontal progression demographic in GW1 suggests to me that that this is their point of view. Whether or not, my interpretation of ANet’s actions and words was not point of my last post, or the thread.

Here’s something more relevant to the discussion: Vertical progression is needed because without it, a large MMO like GW2 couldn’t survive financially. The amount of players preferring stat progression greatly outnumbers the amount of players that do not, and are necessary to being marketed toward you want to break even or make at least some profit. Proof? None. Indications? ANet’s introduction of end game gear progression and the innumerable posts on other MMO’s fansites such as TERA, SWOTOR, TSW in favor of end game gear progression compared to those against it. The most common complaint about from players about gear grid these days is that it’s too repetitive, or takes too long, not that it’s there at all. ANet improved your run of the treadmill(hah, see what I did there?) gear grind with a balanced, optional gear progression. Grated, it still needs to become more accessible in certain parts of the game, but this is something being worked on as we speak.
