Lets talk about the new Gem conversion [Merged]
Altough I am still wondering about the prizes of the gems and how that’s going to work out .. I am glad they listened.
Thank you for listening and responding.

Thank you, Gaile, for an official response here on the forums.
Absolutely!
I’m sorry we weren’t able to answer earlier, but it took a bit of time to research how best to address player concerns. I’m glad that this is going to be resolved in a way that will give players a great deal of flexibility, customization, personalization, the whole lot.
I was just thrilled when the devs said the custom option could be done. I think my “Yaaaay!” was heard in downtown Seattle.
That begs the question (and I know it is unconfortable) how far apart are the devs and the community usually?
I see you thrown in front the lions recently and you do a good (sometimes, situational questionable, but still good) so far, as you have in the past.
You come down to us on a personal level, the desire to have things changed yourself. That is great. That is showing passion. (I hope that does not get you into problems)
However the game seems to be going more and more along metrics and a lot of the passion I felt in the past is gone. (Though the passion in Points of Interest is cringeworthy. Please dial back the back-patting. It feels weird, if the forum is in flames about certain things and insteadt of infos I see someone dangling keys…
There are… rumors… and you don`t have to adress them (crunch time, overwork, etc. the usual honestly… all the bad stuff), but how much has changed from release?
You know, with key people going, new people, outside people coming in. Young Blood.
Is the fire still there. Or has it become routine?
Bad approach.
I think the currency exchange need to be designed as followed.
Previously, for converting gold into gem, we need to input certain amount of gold to obtain certain amount of gems. It can be improved such that we can input the amount of gem and it show us the amount of gold it cost. Likewise, for gem to gold conversion.
Right now, yes, we can all see how much gem it cost for how much gold and vice verse. However, the flexibility to exchange the amount of gold or gems is gone! I like that flexibility, I want that flexibility.
Then, the graph, the graph is useful to people who knows how to read it, who knows how to read the trend. Now, if anet wants to remove the graph then anet need to set a FIX RATE, otherwise, put the graph back.

What about the fact that they knew what the right thing was before launching this? Does that come into play at all for you? I mean…they aren’t stupid. They are smart enough to make an MMO and sell it to millions. They know what they are doing.
This isn’t an “Oh mai gawsh, we never thought about this..so you want to be able to manually enter in your amounts?? Got it! Thanks”.
This is a “We’ll force them to overbuy and over pay…lets wait and see if they reach a 10.0 on the ‘Rage-o-meter’ we have on the wall in the office. If so, we have the code ready to go to create a ‘Custom’ button..so we can appease them and give off the appearance of listening to their feedback. Either way, win win for us!”
Sure it was. It was attempt to try and make more money. Because shockingly, Arena.net is a business. It’s goal is to make as much money as they can. So they’ll do whatever they think they can get away with.
I’m not surprised by this. I’m not upset by it. Nor do I hold a grudge that they pushed too far and had to backtrack. They aren’t my friend. They aren’t in a relationship with me. They want my money, and everything else is secondary.
So you’re OK with whatever their intents were on the surface and under the surface. I guess if you like being taken advantage of, or supporting a developer like this.
Me, I do business with more honest folk. If I go to a store to buy one pen, I want to buy one pen. The store won’t force me to buy three pens when all I need is one. And if they did try to force me, you can be sure I won’t shop there again.
But go ahead, continue to see the good in the bad. Thats a positive trait too I suppose. I just see the world with a more cynical eye rather than rose-tinted glasses.
I’m happy it’s being fixed but once again I have to point out that this thread wouldn’t have happened had there been a PTR for feature changes.
I recommended a PTR 2 years ago.
Clearly the devs are listening.
I’ve stopped playing your game as you are making to many mistakes and this is just another imo stop breaking things that work and work on things which are broken!!!
People seems to keep implying that they don’t actually ask anything before making changes but simply just do what they feel like.
They DO have alpha testers after all, so maybe the issue is more along the lines that those testers didn’t have a big of an issue with the change as the extremely overblown forums?

Ok well my thread to try and motivate the players to take the issues they have to the people who deserve the blame was infracted and removed, so I’m just gonna stop posting entirely.
Just wanted to say to the moderators, it was not my intention to break the rules, and for that I do apologize. That said, now I’m too scared to post anything, anywhere on the forums.
Just gonna say, Anet aren’t the ones we should be blaming, and that’s that. I’m done.

Any alpha testers they have are purely internal. And internal testers aren’t going to point out something like this. Even if they do, it’s easy enough to roll over on them. (Internal testers are there to report “broken” things, not unethical things…)
They need external testers to actually judge changes like this fairly. Whether it’s in the form of opt-in players (PTR or the sort, as MANY people have suggested), or external companies that do testing, which do exist in the video game industry.
Eyes on the inside aren’t good enough, as the company will just do what it wants anyway. But with enough external feedback, they’d rightly feel the pressure of such crushing changes.

What makes you so sure they only have internal testers?
We actually know for a fact that they did (at least about a year or so after release) have alpha testers from the outside, which was proven quite clearly when one of them decided to leak quotes and screenshots from those restricted forums.

I think it’s dumb. The only people this helps are rich vets and ANet. With this new system, if someone is a few gems away from buy something for the Black Lion (cause they have left over gems from a previous purchase) then they HAVE to purchase more gems instead of spending a few gold for a few gems. It’s insane, and quite frankly, a money grab. I thought I couldn’t be more disappoint by ANet after they ruined the story, but I was wrong.
Can a mod or the OP update the original post (or title) with the quotes about this being changed based on feedback? Because people do seem to be rather unaware about it (since they don’t read the thread).

Why do I sense they they made this decision with the wrong analysis of Gem Exchange conversions. As a percentage of total Gems acquired through gold conversion, I could see that lots 400 gems or greater would be significant. But I think what they needed to look at was in terms of unique player conversion habits where I think they would find the percent slewed to show a much lower percentage of players buying in bulk.

It’s time to ask a question. How many times has it been now that we got something we didn’t ask, and didn’t want but anet shoved it down our throats anyways?
I think the list of things we didn’t want (but got anyways) is infinitely longer than the list of things we did want (but didn’t get)…
Arenanet: maybe try to ask if something is a good idea before implementing it. This is not the way.
Please remove trash feature #1533224 from this game and give us something we are specifically asking for…
So guys do you think they will add the fix to the Currency Exchange which will allow us to buy as many gems as we want during halloween?
Bacsue i really want to get that Phantom’s Hood and i dont want to pay 70g+ for 400gems while i dont need them all

Rose-tinted glasses? Kitten please.
There was pretty much NOTHING good about this change, really, which is why it got so much heat so quickly. But I also know that what Arena.net tried to do is the accepted and tolerated model that pretty much every other game (like League of Legends, for example) is making kittening BANK with.
So, I’m not the least bit surprised that Arena.net tried to emulate it. It kittening WORKS. And it works depressingly well. To use your analogy, if you were the only one serving single pens, and everyone else was making all the dollars selling packs no smaller than three… why the hell wouldn’t you try to fall in line?
Hell, I’m astonished that the heat compelled Arena.net to backtrack, considering we, as a collective buying group, have already told everyone else that it’s A-OK, and that we’ll happily bend over and take it.
So yeah, I have a pretty cynical view of things, buddy… but not towards the businesses when they behave exactly like what money-pursuing business do. I blame the players who let it happen, and even support it.

No. After all last year’s Halloween had a glaring bug in one of the events that went unfixed and it ran twice as long as this year’s Halloween.
Heck, I would be surprised if we saw it fixed by the Wintersday event. After all a “new” custom screen needs to be created and added into the interface. While their dev tools for such a thing is quite powerful, I imagine the number of cooks needed to approve, test, iterate and repeat will delay a speedy rollout.

There’s nothing wrong with a company trying to make money, but the way that ANet is doing it is absolutely disgusting, with the way they’re trying to pidgeonhole people into buying the amounts of gems ANet wants you to buy, and only being able to spend them in uneven quantities, then do nothing with them afterwards.
League of Legends, as you used as an example, may work similarly, but they constantly have worthwhile sales on items in their store, they often implement items people ask for (there have been TONS of skins and wards that are user-suggested), and they’re all much more realistically priced than 90% of the crap ANet has.
Then, there are plenty of companies out there that still put the customer first — CDProject Red has been head of that list lately. They sell their game as a big-budget title, but every single piece of additional content that they make for it is completely free. Their customer support is amazing, their bugfixing is amazing, and the sheer amount of additional content and updates they’ve done for Witcher 2 is phenomenal.
Do you think they’re making extra money off of it? They aren’t. Do you think it’s costing them any less than ANet to continue to develop these updates post-launch? They still have to keep programmers on payroll after all. What CDPR value higher than anything else is their player base, because they know a happy player base will go out of their way to support the company.
That’s not something ANet is particularly on the ball with anymore. They kitten on their players and then demand more money. There are tons of things they could be doing to make back some goodwill, but they’re just blatantly avoiding doing ANYTHING that would help the community image of them.

Here’s an update for you:
It’s clear that quite a lot of you would like to have greater flexibility in using the Currency Exchange. Our intention when we designed the new interface was to streamline large volume purchases, which make up the majority of transactions.
In light of your feedback, we will update the Currency Exchange so that you can decide how you want to use it. We will keep the new streamlined system and also offer a new “Custom” button on the panel that you can use to exchange any increment of gems or gold.
We anticipate rolling this out soon. Stay tuned!

Sorry for the delay in posting this, but out of respect to our international community, we wanted to be able to post in several forums at once.

Gaile thanks for the update your the best.
This would make sense, IF they didn’t announce the changes so soon after the articles turned up.
What are you smoking. That is exactly why it makes perfect sense. The fact the big review sites blasted them is what scared them into emergency fix mode. Their silence and lack of action at fixing other needed things shows they do not care or think anyone else cares what the official forums think. But they know that sites like kotaku and tentonhammer have huge audiences and so they must be placated. So they did the easiest things they could and that is to release a general statement that they are working on it.
People seems to keep implying that they don’t actually ask anything before making changes but simply just do what they feel like.
They DO have alpha testers after all, so maybe the issue is more along the lines that those testers didn’t have a big of an issue with the change as the extremely overblown forums?
one thing i noticed in some videos when they were showing testers testing content. They dont care about drops.
Which makes sense, the charachters they use are created and deleted at will, none of their gear and items matter, and gear and items are constantly in flux before final release anyhow.
point is, alpha testers are bad at testing many things because they dont have the proper involvement with the charachter/account. Someone testing the system has no excess gems, hasnt paid for it, etc.

WvW and SPvP feedbacks to deaf ears. But when the problem is about something with real money, somehow, their ears start to hear.
You forgot the RP communities feedback, but more or less you covered it all up.

BTW—what does “soon” mean for the fix, a day or 2, next Tues, 2015, 2020, 2050, 3000?
But history says that in the past, holidays have not had such a dramatic effect. So why this time?
Because this time they have a raffle for one of the most highly sought after and coveted skins in the game (the chainsaw greatsword), and a item that you can buy from the gemstore (for I think 25 gems a piece) that gets you one “entry” in that raffle.
Couple that with having to buy gems 400 at a time, and knowing how much people love to gamble… no, I’m not at all surprised the gem rate spiked so highly so quickly. I have no doubt there were a multitude of players grabbing 100,000 gems or more for themselves.
There need not be any conspiracy when simple human behavior explains issues better.
Don’t discount ANet adding an outfit that is a beautiful dress. The best looking outfit in the game at this point. If you go anywhere right now you’ll see how popular this is. I bought one, regardless of the gemgate fiasco. Divinity’s Reach is filled with players in this outfit. That alone would be a huge boost to gem sales. HUGE.
So you spent $ to look like everyone else?

I get the feeling that the “alpha testers” are either 14 year old girls or someone’s very young kid. Could be someone’s wife that doesn’t really understand all this video game business. Purely guessing. Monkies? That may be more likely.
There are wives that play games too you know. (That remark is rather sexist).
LOL. Wives play many many games and don’t go near a computer. Gone Girl!

No, they spent money on a design that they liked. Why do you have to go there? Why does it have to be bad that someone else has it? Does somebody else owning the same sweater as you make you hate the sweater? Does the fact that you’re not the only person that plays this MMO, that you’re not a special little snowflake that is the only person in the world to play it, make it BAD in your eyes?

Spot on at what point does the fact that they keep making these poor/greedy decisions and then having to roll them back register as an underlying issue.

No sympathy for Anet here, they knew EXACTLY what they were doing – forcing the gold-to-gems in beyond stupid oversized bulk. (Hint: If you want a good goldsink Anet, fix the trait system so creating new characters is actually fun)
The community realized their intentions 5 seconds after clicking on the Gem Store. Either Anet is playing you guys for fools or they are not playtesting anything before implementation (for which they have been accused of in the past)
While it’s good that they’re doing something about it, it shouldn’t have happened in the first place

I would love to leave this happy, “aw shucks!” thank you for changing this, but the interface right now is so anti-consumer I can’t. Am I happy it’s getting changed? Totally! The thing I find egregious though is that a few years ago no one at ArenaNet would have allowed something like that into a Guild Wars game.
This is a community that can fly off the handle, but a lot of us that are playing GW2 have left games in the past because these same kinds of underhanded tactics. A lot of us would really appreciate not going down this road again. Hopefully the team will learn from this and do better in the future. Likewise, hopefully the community will learn to be more civil in the future as well.
I’m not sure how much of this thread you read but people weren’t being overly mean or mean at all to Gaile or Anet.
What got some people worked up was the patronizing and sarcastic attitude we were shown for voicing our concerns.
And to the people saying THANK YOU ANET!!!1!! Please stop. Anet punched you in the face and then told you to suck it up when you got mad because they just punched you in the face. And then once the big gamer websites got involved they handed you a little bandaid to act like they really care and they’re sorry for what they did. They didn’t even apologize or hint that they were in any way in the wrong.
The only way they deserve a thanks if is they come clean about their motivations and offer an apology to the entire player. And even then…they’ve shown what they think of their customers. Their integrity is forever damaged and their motivations are clear.

It seems to me it would be simple to replace the Old One while they were fixing the New Crummy One. If they were serious about fixing the problem.
Anyhow I don’t plan on using the Gem Store until they fix it somehow.

Yes, the traits thing is mind bogling. You have to be a bit masochistic to enjoy it.

Saying you’ll do something and doing it are two different things.
Glad to see that the greater flexibility players wanted is being added. And thanks for being here and bearing the brunt of the wrath, Gaile. I know it can’t have been easy.
Give me an example if you don’t mind. I also believe that I had also stated if done correctly in that same paragraph.
If you wish to be taken seriously on a forum it is generally best advised not to chop someone’s statement into pieces as it distorts the overall meaning of the message.
I maintained the integrity of the message to which I was responding. You made a request, I fulfilled it.
As to the, “done correctly,” aspect of your post, it is so subjective as to support my point, not yours. What is, “done correctly,” will completely satisfy one person and royally tick off another who sees it as an example of something not, “done correctly.”
Some people have posted that they love:
The NPE
The introduction of Ascended gear
Megaservers
Changes to various classes.
and so many more things done over the last couple of years.
Other people have posted that they loathe exactly the same things. To one group the dev efforts were done correctly and are greatly appreciated. To another group those exact same efforts are examples of things not done correctly and are reviled and evoke the most bitter of venom directed at the same devs that are lauded for their work by the other group.
This is not unique to GW2. You can’t please all of the people all of the time is a truism for a reason.
ArenaNet – testing customer’s limits for terrible RNG carrot-on-stick mechanics and limited forced purchase options since 2012.
ArenaNet the gas station – Gas now available in 50, 100 or 150 liter options to streamline our services! If you car has a different sized tank, we also offer jerrycans to carry the excess fuel you have purchased for $49.99! *please not these are one use only.
All right, settle down. We threw a tantrum, we got results.
Saying you’ll do something and doing it are two different things.
Not just this, but it’s now becoming a regular “feature” of this game: the monthly attempted cash-grab followed by player outrage.
I really do not like the new gem conversion. What if I want to spend 237 gems and not have to spend 318? The old system was much better. Now I could be stuck selling an amount of gems or trying to buy an amount of gems that I did not want simply because I can no longer choose how much I want to buy or sell. I give the new system a giant thumbs down.
I just wanted to pop in here and thank Anet for listening to the players. I don’t like that it took an uprise of this size to make it happen, but overall i’m happy to see that you guys are willing to make changes where necessary.
Hopefully in the future we will see better communication in these type of matters.
