Lost Shores Feedback Thread
Agreed. The game is currently 3 months old. That’s it. It’s still learning to walk.
I am content. I didn’t get to do the event, and that makes me sad, but you know what, ANet is doing just fine.
Communication needs to be buffed by a LOT by devs, and perhaps rewards for these events reworked, but this game is new and has intense potential.
A holiday event is a one-time event as well, it’s just spread out over the course of several days. I really see no reason to chop that down to a single pocket of 6 hours when you have the capability to make it last for a reasonable length.
Unless you want to argue that the Mad King event wasn’t a one time event for whatever insane reason you can come up with. Sure it’s a holiday that’s repeated each year, but the event content itself is always unique and never to be seen again. I’m sure the only thing that will carry over from that is fighting the Mad King in some capacity.
Men of Science [MoS] – Tarnished Coast
Also if a “one time event” lasted all day, then it wouldn’t really be considered “one time” if it’s being repeated throughout the day.
This has no bearing though. They dont need to be “one time” to begin with.
Its a promise they cannot fulfill really, just like we will never make a lasting change on the world based on an event we complete. Why? Because there are multiple servers and multiple overflows all that could have varied outcomes, which do you choose to be the outcome that will last?

Whilst I missed all of Halloween and only caught the last 2 hours of Lost Shore, I’m pretty sure they don’t “hate” weekend workers.
They have said before they simply do events when they have the highest amount of concurrent players. Which, as much as it’s a pain, makes perfect sense.
I didn’t get a reward, and even I am not freaking out.
People, seriously. It’s a game. A game that is 3 months old.
ANet is still trying to figure out the best way to do these things. Settle down.

You know that is a good point could have some kind of instanced that was repeatable true and I would bet they will have stuff like that at times. But I still feel there should be one time events. I even feel there should be one time surprise events. I remember hearing of stuff in EQ1 were the Guides would put on a event at a random time it was great even though I couldn’t do them all was cool to hear the stories. I did happen to catch one Guide event on EQ2 and it was fun and exciting.
Everything about the event has been covered. Also, the event is not my main issue. My main issue is the new turn the game is taking.
I hate endgame. I hate it to the point where, after having banged about in hardcore raiding guilds in WoW, I left WoW because of the endgame mentality. Ever since then I have started a game, gotten to endgame, and left the game.
The lack of endgame and its resultant gating is why I loved GW2. Now endgame with its mentality is here along with gating caused by endgame.
I am not going to participate and, if Anet continues in this direction, am going to leave the game when later content requires the gear grind in order to beat level difficulties. Then I will leave, go to another game, rinse and repeat. Hopefully it will take longer to reach endgame in whatever comes next than it has to reach endgame here.
Since WoW I spend the absolute minimum on games because I know I am going to leave when I reach endgame. So, my wallet is closed to the gem shop unless Anet shows me there is a reason to expect to stay for any length of time.

I disagree entirely, what would make perfect sense is something set up for 24-36 hours so everyone can get involved. You want to hold it on sundays fine, but make sure that all of your player base at least has a chance to do it. One Day events are fine One time in a small window of time is not.
This post reeks of fallacies. They dont hate anyone, they monitor trends in population and place the events during times when the largest amount of people typically play. Sadly they cannot always get every single person involved in an event, but they can strive for maximum exposure. You still have a fantastic, huge, entire game out there outside of these events. The events dont impact gameplay enough for it to require exposure to the entire population.
I’ve not yet been to the Fractals, so just a couple of things on the Lost Shores event.
The idea itself is really brilliant. A one-time danger, uniting the whole server and all that. It was a real shame I couldn’t actually experience it though.
I made two attempts at trying the event. The first one – P1, Friday. The guild stands ready in LA, everybody in the same overflow, 8PM hits and the cutscene starts. Right after that, the whole LA just stops. All the PCs stopped moving and just stood there, waving their tails/leaves/appendages; NPCs didn’t answer to me right clicking them like a maniac. The game stayed like that for a couple of minutes, with most of the guild having no problems whatsoever. Eventually, I’ve apparently lost the connection to the server and got kicked out. So, I tried to get back as quickly as possible not to miss out on anything.
10 mins of watching the LA loading screen later, I pressed Alt+F4.
Attempt no 2: LA loaded as per usual. I started to feel optimistic, which lasted till the moment I realised whatever I type in chat appears after 30+ seconds. Not a good sign. As I’m on an 80Mbps connection, I never had any issues like that in GW2s WvW or any online thing really. A couple of guildies had similar problems, but we tried to join in on the event as well. Bad idea, that. The lag really kicked in then; despite having constant 60fps (please don’t tell me I should’ve reduced the graphic settings), it was unplayable. I saw people popping in and out of existence, everybody shooting at invisible mobs, 30+ seconds of delay between me trying to use a skill and it actually working… I’d die half a minute before the game even told me about it. It was atrocious, so I just waited for the event to finish, which it eventually did. The defence was fun, too, according to some of the guildies. Considering everybody was on the same overflow, I have no idea what was going on there, but for me and some others, day 1 was completely unplayable.
Frustrated, I gave up and came back for Day 3 part. This sad story continued then though.
It started off well. We got together, moved in to the bomb squad and while some had a blast, I gave up after 40 minutes. The moment we reached the mountain, some of us got a replay of Day 1 issues. Invisible mobs, the game stopping for 20 seconds, for everything to “catch up” at the same time afterwards (for example, one moment everybody’s standing, the next second we’re all dead), fluctuating between 5 and 30+ lag on input. My connection was fine, same with the framerate. It was completely and utterly unplayable, so after 40 mins of running in to see no mobs, yet everybody shooting at something, dozens of people dying in the same second, mobs appearing out of thin air or just spinning in place, I had given up.
We were all in the same overflow and some of the guild had no problems, even people living 50km away from me. For some though, myself included, the event was completely ruined as we simply couldn’t take part in it.
Shame, it looked awesome. Well, when I could actually see anything.
Once again, a brilliant idea, Anet, just could you please make sure it actually works for everyone? Pretty please with a sylvari on top.

And there really isn’t any reason for them to do that way. Historically, only about 20% of a player base actually plays during the prime time, so really they are excluding 80% of their playerbase. They really need to have events happen more then 1 time, basically have it every day for a week and have it happen every hour or 2. That way everyone gets an opportunity to do the event.
Thank you ANet!
Honestly I feel more need to say just those 3 words and move along, realize this is a new game and can’t be compared with older games, and update their PCs to handle it accordingly. I have a far longer rant for the Negative Nancys that complain about bonnus features than that, but I will instead stick to the point – I enjoyed myself. I experienced very minimal and only periodic lag on a good computer with 100s fighting around me. The only issue for me was Noll and that chain, but I can live with that. The new dungeon is quite fun and has quite a bit of staying power (though I agree the lv system needs a bit of work or it’ll be hard to find groups eventually).
Appreciatively looking forward to Wintersday

But it does degrade the fun potential for what is actually the majority of the player base, for no real reason at all. They can have these events happen more then once, happening every hour or 2, and more then just 1 day.
It was fun. I remember my first dragon fight in DAoC, my first Ragnaros fight in WoW, and this had that same feeling. The best part of this was nobody had done it before, there were no guides on the web telling you the steps or what to do. This was a bunch of people fighting and figuring out what needed to be done, helping your guildies get on your overflow, rezzing people, and talking in vent and map chat.
The event wasn’t perfect but it was fun and had that epic feel to it.
I didn’t get a reward, and even I am not freaking out.

Using 3 months old as an escuse for bugs… sure, you could make an argument for that. 3 months old as an excuse for poorly designed mechanics that were implemented after release, sorry, that doesnt cut it. They already received backlash during Halloween for their one time events, and instead of addressing their player base’s concerns, they instead added 2 more one time events.
Arena Net is over 12 years old. Their decision processes and ability to modify their decisions based on their player base should be better, but instead they are slow to respond and slower to change (Look at precursors, long ago they addressed it was an issue then when silent until last week).

i disagree. i think it’s exactly those one time events that you will remember, it’ll be the stuff that you’ll look back and say “i was there”. making it just standard content defeats that.
as for the people complaining about the rewards being too good, no. just no. rewards have been sucky in GW2 forever now, this is the first time we got a big, sactisfactory reward. it’s not that big of an advantage (how will a couple extra gold suddenly make my character better than you?), it’s just rewarding players for all their effort throughout the weekend, with unique items as well as some quality “standard” rewards.

Yeah no, I payed for my box. I have the same rights as anyone else to enjoy every piece of content this game puts out as does everyone else who paid for this game. They do impact it though because it’s content I paid for and continue to support and pay for through purchase of gems, I have been denied and will never get to play.. what part of that isn’t sinking into your head. NO ONE should ever be denied content of a game they payed for EVER.
This Last event was fun. some of it was a bit aggravating but it was fun and the reward was good even though I didn’t get a precursor.
Please don’t listen to the people complaining about one time events. One time events are great cause they create stories years to come. If I miss one oh well life goes on but I get to hear tales of others and epic battles later on.
It pains me to think that all the QQing could result in no more events like this and have them go away completely or turn into some cookie cutter “heart” quest. Please continue with the one time events. Maybe change the days they happen from time to time but don’t get rid of them.
Most of the QQing is due to this, or being DC’d about here as well.
I have not been able to participate in any of the one time events Anet arranged so far yes not even the Madking’s. This is due to the timezone i live in. i have to watch the videos to see how these went and this is getting frustrating.
people might stop playing if its not fair to everyone, simply because you are able to attend the event don’t just ridicule others for raising their concerns.
My suggestion is to run these events multiple times on that day atleast so that everyone has a fair chance to experience it.
Yeah, I don’t understand why the events are not repeatable like all the rest of the content. Make the final loot chest once per account/character and let the events run all day.
You do have the same opportunity War Siren, you are just choosing things in your life over things in the game. Yet another fallacy of reasoning. Lets follow your line of logic. What about the people who cannot play at all on Fri/Sat/Sun because they work entire weekends doing in home care or they are doctors that are on call. No matter how wide you make a window, someone will be left out. The only content that people cant be left out of is static, dynamic, forever repeated content that makes up most of the game. If you have the mindset that everyone must be able to do all of the content, you will never have fun, world changing events.
I would much rather have events I cant make sometimes that are keeping the game fresh than have a boring static world like most other MMOs do.
And by the way, the event yesterday was pretty much all day, as of 8 pm PST, maps were still doing the event.

Honestly killing the Ancient Karka was boring (reinforcement parts take forever… more HP != more fun) and Mad Kings 1 time event was a cinematic that was over hyped. What I will remember in this game is playing with my friends, not the events.
GW1 had ‘one time’ events which lasted a day, and even those are not my fond memories of GW1. Community interaction is far more lasting than an event where the community is segregated based on play availability. Im more likely to remember Karka for being highly bugged (enemy culling anyone) and the end chest disconnection issues then any ‘fun’ I had.

I was there and got kicked out. One-time events okay, but make them work.
Without the one time only event the update is awesome enough, with a new map. New dungeon and new pvp map. Why implent a broken event?

easy, have events that last 1 week, and have the events repeat every hour or 2. they do this, and they will get the vast majority of the players.

That is a load of BS absolute BS, and you know it is. There are ways of opening a window large enough to not only make it accessible to everyone but also make them not stagnate and boring.

yes, the reinforcements segments were annoying, especially because the lag spiked during them, but i found that, aside from that part, the entire thing was really, really cool (especially once the lag was gone).
and i don’t know about you, but i was playing the event with friends. sure “i remember playing with friends” is fine, but that doesn’t mention any specific memory. “there was this one time where we filled this giant crab’s nest with bombs and then had to push it back inside it with mortars and rockslides and geysers, and then we broke the ground under the nest so it would fall on lava” is a much more specific memory, and makes for an awesome story.
and if you consider all the changes you made to the island as you progressed, it makes for an even better story. “that bridge? i helped build it. that giant dead crab on the lava? oh, i killed it”.
I was quite sad too to see people got good rewards on sunday while I was working. I had done all the “scavenge hunt” and participated in friday and saturday events.
I think they should do either a all weekend long quests that give rewards OR make the one-time event repeats all day long (like the dragons) so people can log in when they can that day. Of course, once you open the chest with a characther it’ll be impossible to get it again.
No War Siren, its not. Just because you can only see your own issues does not mean you are the authority on all issues. I understand that you are upset that you cant experience content due to your schedule, but that does not mean that the content shouldn’t exist or needs to span whole week or month or even day periods. In an evolving MMO things have beginnings and ends, you enjoy what you can, and move on.
The event was fun, but wasn’t perfect. If Anet does decide to make another one-time event (which I think they should), then they should change the system in such a way that ensures people can do the event when they wish. I had an idea of having a large instance, for example, you speak to someone in lions arch and sail to the island (at any time of the day), when approximately 80 people are on the island, the event starts. Then when a few events have passed that specific instance closes (just so that people don’t end up missing the whole thing) and a new one opens for more people to join. When you have done the event fully you will unable to visit the INSTANCED area but will still be able to travel to that island to do the ordinary events.
Basically, it’ll have the same concept as story instances but designed for a larger amount of people. Having an event that is described as one-time but is repeated throughout the day contradicts itself.
That’s my idea. I think it’s quite feasible and caters to everyone. Share your thought please…
I like the idea of one-time events, as they make the world feel alive and give it some cool lore, but that is ALL they should do. maybe a unique skin but that is it. And yeah, they should run a whole day as there are many international players, and players who can’t play at one specific time. That should also help with the lag.
Over all though, I say kudos to Anet for doing this at all. Not to mention remember ppl, they are trying new things, seeing where they can take the genre: you can’t expect them to get it perfect on their first try. I’m happy they have the courage to try these things. Keep at it Anet! I’m sure it’ll be even better next time!

I vividly remember defeating the Lich with my friends because it was the end of the first game. I vividly remember getting my Luxon 15k armor set while playing the economy of GW1 at my friends house over one night. I vividly remember learning to farm Gates of Kryta, my first ever farming location….
Some of those relate to events (though all events were repeatable), others dont, but none of them are specific to a single one time only event. Thats the point, you dont need 1 time ‘epic’ events to make memories in a game, and if you need 1 time events to make lasting memories that is quite sad.

Halloween was their first try. People didnt like it then, why would they like it now? In fact it got worse from Halloween, at least that event was purely a cinematic that had no chance of giving other players unfair advantages due to their availability (like this end chest did).

I hope they DONT get rid of 1 times events. This an an MMO people, a LIVING and BREATHING world… things will move forward as you are not there…. people started playing MMO’s way back when for THIS type of gameplay. Dont like it? There is the freaking door to RTS/Shooter/RPG/etc…

I was so disappointed at this event.
Why should I have to wake up at Monday 5:00 AM?
I let it off at Halloween, it was just fun movie. but this was not.
It is the same as nightcap of WvW.
My first forum post as well. After reading the numerous posts here, I note that most of my concerns have already been noted. But I’ll add my experiences anyway – in a nutshell I thought the idea was good in principle, but the experience has left a very bad taste in my mouth.
I was initially bummed about this event, since my Thanksgiving plans had me traveling. My plans changed, though, and I was excited about being able to participate.
Unfortunately, my excitement dropped quite quickly. I started with the scavenger hunt, but a bugged Noll prevented me from completing it during phase I. I checked back in every hour to see if he would work but no luck.
I finally finished phase I when phase II came out. I then went down to explore the new area, which I thought was neat, but didn’t see any evidence of any big events. (I didn’t discover that I completely missed the LA attack until today). Logged off and figured I’d hop in again for phase III.
Phase III went off to a good start in that the map was clearly labeled as to the demolition team action. Promptly went bad in that nearly all the waypoints I found had vanished. So I walked, and got there in time. The demolition event was challenging and fun, the lag wasn’t too bad though we did get wiped once by some monsters appearing out of nowhere. No chest at the end but rich ori node provided some reward.
At this point it wasn’t immediately clear to me what to do next. I did notice an event with something about reinforcements, but it was quite a distance away, and without the big orange arrows that the demolition event had. So I thought it might just be another side event at the time (stupid of me in retrospect). I wandered around a bit looking for something else, but eventually heading that direction. My client crashed before I got to it, so I figured that it would be a good time to take a break for food and such, figuring it would be going on later (also stupid of me in retrospect).
Long story short, I missed the finale for not recognizing it as a finale. Had I been more diligent in relogging in perhaps I could have avoided further crashing (unclear based on the experiences of others).
I had thought that it would be on a 3 hour timer or something in GW1 tradition, but when I had gotten back it dawned on me that this was not the case. I had enjoyed the demolition run, but I was quite angry at missing the the final event and accompanying loot bag (which with a 20 slot bag is worth at least 10g, plus the mother lode for those fortunate enough to get precursors).
This is effectively the second time this has happened to me in under a month. I also missed out on the halloween book because of not being able to turn the quest items in. Again, in GW1 tradition, I expected quest givers to loiter for a few days after the main event was done. I also actually expected the halloween event to last through all of Nov 1 so when the new build wiped out the npc to turn in the books to I was a bit peeved.
Well, that was my experience. In terms of recommendations and observations, I found Northlander.4619 ’s post above to resonate with me (and I copied the key points to me below). Thank you, Northlander, for putting to paper (well e-paper) my frustrations with this event in a more constructive fashion than I could have.
Rationally, I shouldn’t be as ticked off as I am (A net put a lot of work into a free event for our enjoyment after all). But I was so excited on Friday, and now I am just ticked at missing the finale and the accompanying goodies.
Most people in my guild got the 20 slot bag, some got the exotic accessory and a few even got precursors. I got one day’s pay, but if i had know the rewards would be as good as this I would have called in sick. In the future I will but of course calling in sick means less money for me and as such less for gems. I think having them run more than once would be in ANet’s best financial interest, don’t you?
I enjoyed the event over all, there are some kinks that need to be worked out but the basic idea was good and the event was fun. I would like to see one of these come up occasionally but not make it a monthly or even quarterly occurrence.

Its a real living breathing world? Geez, those BL Traders sure can stand in one spot a long time without moving….
This argument fails quite quickly when you consider for some people, there is this dragon Zhiatan alive, and for others he is already dead, yet we are all living in the same time and place. Explain that please.

the point of things like this are a way of introducing content, would you prefer they just released the content like POOF there it is.
personally as a long time MMO player i love the immersion that is given by the opening events for add-ons and expansions.
it gives a reason and story about the new content,
pick one:
POOF “heres the big evil enemy that’s never actually done anything!”
or
“here’s the big evil enemy that invaded our homeland, fight back!”

We feel that everyone should have the ability to contribute no matter what time of the day it is. How we’ve came to this conclusion is that no player’s time is more valuable than another. Everyone has different off peak hours for whatever reason. Players should not be punished or unable to experience and view the same content as everyone else because they play at a different time. They too are paying customers.

To bad it doesn’t seem like the rest of the Anet franchise feels this way.
{League Of The Valkyries} {LOVE}
they tell you about these events far enough in advance that you can take the day off if you really need to participate that much. I work all day fri sat and sunday and I missed it but its not arenanets fault that people have different jobs, and that the earth rotates
Um yes that content does, I and everyone else who missed it due to work/time zone etc. PAID you understand what that word means right? Paid for this game, most of us continue to support it by buying gems. I have 100% right to all content just as everyone else does. This isn’t life, this is a video game one in which I paid for. It’s kind of messed up that my recreational activity is now causing me more stress than my actual job.
I’m sorry you got to make the event and get to partake in the content, you also paid for, but guess what so did I, but I didn’t get to partake in it. and no I didn’t chose not to, I’m a manager I can’t just take time off or call off for a video game event. Nor should I or anyone ever have to. It’s poor game design bottom line.
I liked the event itself but I have to agree that it was implemented very badly.
Having all servers participating at the exact same time pretty well guaranteed connection problems and lag as well as eliminating the ability of those in many time zones to participate.
If they can’t set up a schedule in which different servers host the event at time slots most convenient for the major time zones then, as much as I enjoyed the actual event, I would rather not have the events at all.

I was so disappointed at this event.
Why should I have to wake up at Monday 5:00 AM?
I let it off at Halloween, it was just fun movie. but this was not.
It is the same as nightcap of WvW.You dont HAVE too. Its optional. Just like I didnt HAVE to book off work. Stop crying for no reason.
You got a 20 slot bag that cannot be attained any other way. That is reason enough to complain.
the point of things like this are a way of introducing content, would you prefer they just released the content like POOF there it is.
personally as a long time MMO player i love the immersion that is given by the opening events for add-ons and expansions.
it gives a reason and story about the new content, pick one:
POOF “heres the big evil enemy that’s never actually done anything!”
or
“here’s the big evil enemy that invaded our homeland, fight back!”
Why does the fighting back have to be a single world event? Why cant waves of enemies attack over the course of a period of time. Seemed to work for all those DEs out there with attacking Risen.

I had a blast on my upscaled elementalist. I knew going in that my rewards would be less than if I was 80, but the 3 hour long battle was some of the most fun I’ve had in an MMO to date, lag and all.
Yes it was long, yes it was drawn out; but that’s what made it feel so satisfying when the Karka emerged from its magma grave, burnt to a crisp. For 3 hours, it wasn’t a game to me, it was a battle for my home against a massive and dangerous threat.
That is why I like GW2 so much. It feels like I’m fighting in a fantasy world, more importantly, for my fantasy world.
I just wanted a AAA MMO with no sub made by ArenaNet. And it’s awesome.”

The above quote was taken from the WvW forums regarding “Night Capping” by Matt Witter (Game Designer, ANet). Please apply the same logic to World Events, especially if you’re giving out drops like legendary precursors. Please stop the “one-time” events tied to a specific time of day. There are lots of suggestions on this forum about how to get around it. Implement phasing on a character/account basis, let it run repeatedly for a week or a month, etc. The rest of us might not be playing during peak concurrency hours, but we’re paying customers too.
Thank you.
Anyone who disagrees with this is a troll and an idiot.
Signed.
Basically this, I dont know how people are trying to argue against it. This was their stance early after release, why has it changed?

If this is the case I’d advise you find a new game.
You have to understand these events are genuinely world changing. Go to Sunwhatever cove, and look around, talk to the NPCs of lions arch. Compare it to what it looked like 2 days ago – the events actually reshaped the landscape and it’s characters.
This kind’ve permanence and feeling that the players participated in something that had an impact in the history of Tyria isn’t possible in a repeating event. Other MMO’s don’t have any meaning when they’re like “congratulations you beat some random evil”… 20 minutes til story arc resets and you can all go and beat some random evil… again.
As for saying you paid and thus deserve it, that isn’t true in ANY business in the world. If you pay money but there is a schedule and you miss the schedule, you miss out.

Umm my point wasn’t that I could take the day off, it was the rewards were FAR in excess of the norm. And yes we all realize the world rotates and that is WHY they should put in place a better way of doing this. Off the top of my head, I would allow every account to participate in it much the same way the mad kings labyrinth was done. Only once you have completed it through to the chest it would no longer appear for you or any character on your account, you could still enter and help others though. Being open for a few days would allow EVERYONE to participate and not just those lucky enough to have the time for it.
