Magic Find [merged]
First: Not sure if this belongs here or suggestions; as it is more of a general concern, I posted in the general forum. I do not mind if a mod feels this should be else where.
NOTE: This is not a complaint or anything that can be discerned as negative. It is just me trying to explain my concern about the upcoming changes and the hopes that my situation (and those like me) will be taken into account when these changes are made.
I am writing this post to express my concern over the magic find changes that will be forthcoming and wanted to post the views of someone that has an extremely high magic find stat. Attached is a screen shot of my magic find stat WITHOUT any buffs : 149% (includes 3% achievement reward buff).
First let’s focus on something you aid in your July 18th announcement:
Colin Johanson
“We specifically said we don’t want to get caught up in the trap where every 3-6 months the game adds another tier of gear to the game; that invalidates all your hard work and the rewards you’ve earned.”
I have worked very hard for my magic find. All of my gear is exotic Explorer’s gear. I have 1 Superior Traveler’s Rune and 5 Superior Pirate’s Rune in that armor. I have exotic Drakevenom with Superior Luck Sigil. I have 2 Opal Orichalum Earrings of the Explorer, and they, along with my back piece, have Exquisite Opal Jewels. Even my underwater weapon: Exotic Serpentsniper with a Superior Luck Rune.
The part I worked hardest for are my amulet and rings. My amulet is The Golden Lotus, infused with Magical Infusion (Total 50 Laurels). My rings are Yakkington’s Ring and Snaff’s Gyre (Total 70 Laurels).
Even my level 80 alts have high Magic Find stats, albeit they may not be in exotics like my main above, but they have the gear when I decide to play them and use the gear.
So I am concerned that all the hard work I have done may become invalidated with the new change of magic find gear.
I have stockpiled massive amounts of Omnomberry Bars and Dragonfly Cupcakes and am always looking for ways to tweak my Magic Find stat, even if it is just by an additional 1%. I heard Melandru has a back piece that grants 3% Magic Find but doesn’t display in the tool tip and that is my next objective this weekend.
I spend hours every day running events either in Cursed Shore leading a zerg with my Commander’s Icon on (Sole reason I bought this was for event farming in Cursed Shore), or in other zones; hitting up events that have the greatest concentration of enemies (Centaur chain in Hinterlands), or just areas in zones with close groupings of mobs.
If I go into a dungeon/fractal with others, I just simply change my gear to my spare set designed for high damage and survivability so as to not harm my group with my reduced stats. I have no qualms about carrying an extra set of gear, especially when I have over 140 bag slots.
You have said:
Colin Johanson
“In the near future, we’ll detail the system we’ll use to replace the existing magic find items. Our goal will be to have as little disruption as possible to those who currently own items with a magic find stat on them.”
I hope that you will consider those that are like me and stack as much Magic Find as possible when it comes to your new system. I am pretty sure I am not the only one, as I can name at least one other individual on my server, the one I learned the Cursed Shore event farming from.
Now, even through all the changes the game has gone through, I haven’t complained. Gotten ripped off from RNG boxes; my own fault. However, this has me a bit worried and I know I will be upset should the changes not be comparable to what I have currently invested my time to achieve through hours of hard work.
However, no matter the changes, I WILL continue to play this game for as long as it lasts. I have played GW1 since release. I have played GW2 since beta, pre-ordered the game as soon as it was available for pre-order, and have spent over 2000 hours between TWO accounts. I have faithfully bought gems whenever my budget would allow. I may dabble in other games for a week or two occasionally, but always come back to GW2 to spend 8+ hours a day in Tyria.
Thanks for listening to my concerns and am looking forward to what you come up with! I just hope to hear soon, but making the most of my MF gear now while I can just in case.

Several months ago ANet said they were going to do away with the magic find stat. Have they said what they are going to do with the gear that actually has the magic find stat on it?
Will they simply be removing it and adjusting the other stats upward?
Will they replace the magic find stat with some other % modifier?
Since the new Celestial gear came out (why on earth does it have to be account bound!) I’m more in favor of the first option. gaining 3-5 more of each stat seems more beneficial to me. On the flip side, we still don’t have a real stat that is used to increase the duration of boons and conditions. We also don’t have an equivilent to toughness/armor that works against condition damage (technically vitality, but that’s a poor comparison).
I’m curious if there has been any indication from ANet on what they plan to do with all the gear that has magic find on it. Celestial gear in particular.
Nothing is known at this point, other than that something is going to be done with Magic Find.
They have yet to disclose it. I think they’re still working on the details on how to properly compensate players considering there are thousands of MF-related items in game.
My guess would be they would operate just like blues/greens. They would be salvagable for MF consumables to temporarily/permanently boost your MF stat.

Magic find works. http://sinasdf.imgur.com/
Don’t do that! Who knows how good it will become!!
… or it might suck.
I’m just kidding they said it won’t affect owners of MF gear, so I’m curious how it will work.
(edited by Mortifer.2946)
Clearly it’s going to affect something :p
they can just deactivate MF stats in MF gear without changing anything.. left us with 2 other stats..
Screenshot? Nothing there.
they can just deactivate MF stats in MF gear without changing anything.. left us with 2 other stats..
And make the gear useless? Because would you wear rare/exotic lvl80 armour with only 2 stats?
It’s less about the imagine itself but the name of the screenshot.
Expect a PSA in the next week on how they are going to exchange our MF.

Account-Wide Magic Find: Magic Find will be removed as an equipment stat and implemented as an account-wide bonus applied to all of a player’s characters.
Already on a few sites. Kotaku, Massively, GW2guru. You can also follow @DragonSeasonCom on Twitter, they usually post up to date info (at least Tillion anyways)
Whats it going to be replaced with though?
Please give us a keyring…

Maybe they can change the MF stat to % CD stat and turn MF gear to Berserker gear… close enough on the other 2 stats already.

it is here delete your MF gear
Why delete it now, when you can delete it later when the patch drops?
Remember what happened when ANet changed the karma gain from bottles without warning? They reimbursed the lost karma If on the other hand you delete your gear now, you’ll lose out on everything.

Well the MF gear I have on my ele isn’t close to Beserker’s at all (its T/V/MF ones). I would kinda hate for it to become Beserker’s all of a sudden. Would rather boon/condition durations (plus or minus, based on self/enemy).
Please give us a keyring…
I’d prefer it if all MF gear was turned into tokens that can be traded in for new gear of your choice.

Including transmutation crystals?
Seeing as I replaced my pure MF set with Celestial, I hope that they change the MF to Boon duration or Condition Duration. (Boons please)
And what I also hope is that I can still achieve the 150+ MF without needing a billion consumables with me at all times.
Hopefully, after they’ve stripped MF bonuses from runes, armor, weapons (whatever else they’re removing it from), they’ll buff the bonuses from the achievement chests so that the current piddley 1% becomes 10% and 2% becomes 20% or something similar. That way you get a nice account boost as you get achievements rather than the little barely anything we get now.
Seeing as I replaced my pure MF set with Celestial, I hope that they change the MF to Boon duration or Condition Duration. (Boons please)
You see, that’s the problem with removing one stat from a weapon/armour. I don’t care about boons at all. I don’t have boons on my ranger. I might as well trash my entire pirate set if that were the case…
No matter what they do, some people will not be happy with the change (even if they don’t care that MF in itself will be removed). Unless they give you some way to change the stat of the armour/weapon with some token.
Yeah, you’re right, if I had my celestial gear on something other than my guardian, the boon duration would kind of suck. But I’m sure they’ve got something in mind….hopefully it pleases most people.

So with magic find becoming account based, are all of the players that spent alot of time getting different gear sets, magic find in particular, getting screwed over?
What’s the point in wasting time with this game any more if everything you work for gets changed on a whim? Alot of my characters have 3 complete sets of gear, Offensive, Defensive, and Magic Find.
So what about players that have went through all of the trouble to get complete sets of Magic Find gear? It appears to be much more of a setback than any sort of step forward.
Your gear will be converted into gear of another type.
MF gear is also the cheapest gear in the game by a large margin. It’s not a big loss even if they just flat removed it.
MF is a broken mechanic and needed to be removed.
If it is a broken mechanic then why is it still sticking around? Instead of being on gear it is now just applied to the entire account?

Because that what was broken about it. It took away from actual fighting stats.

It was broken because it was on gear. The stat itself wasn’t the problem.
It basically made you choose between good loot or good stats. You were required to screw your teammates over if you wanted good loot. That will no longer be the case.
To answer the OP’s question the devs stated in the july blog that people with current MF gear will be compensated for the gear they already have.
I would rather they didn’t automatically turn the gear into something that wasn’t gear, as 3 of my pieces have a very specific look, and if the stat was just going to get stripped from existing gear, at least I could transmute the look of those 3 pieces in the set to something else of my choosing.
It would be expensive to have to get those 3 pieces again for the looks. Which…is why ‘all’ skinning should get turned into a system like the Zenith skins, where you can memorize the look of ‘anything’ with a crystal and re-used at your leisure. But I digress.
To answer the OP’s question the devs stated in the july blog that people with current MF gear will be compensated for the gear they already have.
Yes, and now it is time to tell us how that will happen, please.

So long as they don’t do something weird like destroy the gear and turn it into a token to redeem something. Or make us ‘trade’ the gear in for other gear.
While the MF gear itself might be cheap, their limited skinning system (because they don’t let us learn skins to use on a whim like dyes or Zenith skins) does mean that any sort of trade-in scheme like that would cause me to lose 3 skins on pieces that ‘were’ a bit expensive.
What about magic find buffs from food and other sources?
To answer the OP’s question the devs stated in the july blog that people with current MF gear will be compensated for the gear they already have.
Just the gear itself, or the cost of Transmutation Crystals and other armor used to re-skin said magic find armor as well?
I’m just saying.
We need dev communication. We need it today. We need to know exactly how the MF changes will be implemented and how we will be compensated.
Randomly implementing some change on patch day with no warning will lead to exactly the same thing that happened with the karma changes. Don’t let it happen. Give us a detailed explanation on how we will be compensated for our MF gear and how it will work.
If you don’t do this by the end of today people will read the release page and start doing crazy things like deleting their gear. This will lead to whining, complaining and the slew of support tickets. This can all be avoided by just telling us how it will work right now.

That’s what I am getting at. It was previously said that it wasn’t much of a loss anyways. Well I obtained much of my MF gear not long after release when gold wasn’t as easy to get as it is now. It was alot of work and time then compared to how much easier it is now.
Edit: notebene makes a good point. What about the expenses of buying gear that you want the skin from and the Crystals to transmute everything? That is one of my concerns, it’s alot more than just the stats alone.
It’s the time and gold involved to get the gear with MF stats, the gear that had the skins I wanted and the Real Life Money spent to buy Gems for Transmutation Crystals to apply those skins.
I have 4 level 80 characters I have done this on so far… that’s quite a bit of time, gold and real life money. Atleast I won’t be able to make the same mistake on the 4 characters that I am still leveling.

^^this. It is time for someone in ‘the know’ to tell the community what is about to happen. If they announced the removal is coming, possibly September 3rd, then please let us know.
I only have one character heavily invested in MF (~150% without buff more if my 25stacks on weapon are active). That is with an ascended amulet and the utility MF infusion 30%). I rarely play that character even though it has the MF because I only use it to get T6 mats with guild members when we go to farm those. Doesn’t happen often but when it does I can get about 8-10 T6 in an hour.
I also have two characters with Celestial ascended amulets.
I’m happy for the change to account MF but I am also worried about how Anet is going to implement this.

EDIT: added a new source & wanted to add
my human warrior with explorer + another MF exotic chest piece looks really really nice. I don’t think they’ll take away the skins, just the stat. At least I hope not.

Since they are introducing the ability to change stats with the legendary weapons we know the technology is there. Adding the ability to change MF once into a different stat combination should be feasible. Potentially MF gear will be made not wearable so you have to change the stats.
“Whose Charr is this?”- “Ted’s.”
“Who’s Ted?”- “Ted’s dead, baby. Ted’s dead.”
I could not possibly agree with this statement more…
No. Don’t change MF gear to another set of gear. I already have other sets of gear for characters that have MF gear, I don’t need 2 sets of the same thing. And what about all of the transmutation crystals that were bought with real money to put skins on MF gear?
It’s your choice to change this Anet, it’s on you not to screw it up.
So i’ve bought magic find infusion on 2 characters and 1 ascended amulet with magic find. Ive paid for it 70 laurens, so it is about 2 months of playing. Am i going to be screwed now and lose 2 months of playing? It doesn’t looks nice to me…
Have four level 80s with mf gear and runes and sigils of luck. Hopefully they will salvage into essences of luck or whatever the account wide mf buff consumable is called. What will happen to gear that boosts all stats including mf? Hopefully other stats will be bumped up to compensate.
Lack of communication inevitably leads to over reaction.
I don’t care about boons at all. I don’t have boons on my ranger.
Um, Call of the Wild much?
Would be nice to have some clarification on how this will work.
Essentially, MF% users need 3 things in order to wind up “even” after the change:
1. The ability to retain their current armor and weapon skins.
2. The option to either obtain stats of their choice or some Account MF% as compensation (for people who don’t need/want another gear set).
3. Rune/Sigil/Upgrade replacements.
^ this. Though I have a feeling that this will end up being a setback. Time, gold and RL money gone for nil.
They gave notice months ago that MF in equipment was going away and was going to be more of an account/consumable thing. This is much different than what happened with karma where the boosts’ effects disappeared without notice.
Anyone who buys/gets MF gear from their announcement and onwards does so at their own risk.
The only downside i got with their announcement was the realization of the fact that laurel spent in buying magic find infusion is a lost cause.
Anyone who buys/gets MF gear from their announcement and onwards does so at their own risk.
That’s all fine and dandy, but you’re missing the point. OP already has MF gear, and I’m sure he’s not the only person who had it long before they announced it’d be removed. The point of this thread is to find out exactly what will happen to existing MF gear. I have a full set (quiver too) and I’m going to be royally kitten ed off if I wake up on patch day with a bunch of “lol double click to apply this skin to another item” crap.
The real question, in my mind is, what about the equipment like the Golden Lotus and the Magical Infusion? What happens to those?
There are a whole bunch of ways to screw up something this major and only, I don’t know, I can’t think of any but I’ll go with one, one way to do it right… Getting stiffed out of mats and gold and even dungeon tokens is one thing. Getting stiffed out of the 50 Laurals it takes to buy a Golden Lotus and Magical Infusion? Yeah, no…
They have said that the gear MF stat is going away some time ago and that they’ve got a plan (but haven’t said exactly what plan) to compensate those who currently have MF gear.
If they say ahead of time that MF gear wearers will all get “X” bonus or whatever what is stopping NON-MF users from buying up all of the MF gear just to get extra rewards?
If they go ahead with their plan and we find out in detail how MF gets changed the day of, then the regular users of MF get their boost/compensation and the gear left in the TP is changed accordingly.
We know the gear is changing. personally, I think that’s all we need to know right now.
