I have been playing, casually and otherwise, MMOs since Pre CU SWG. I have played over a dozen such games and I have found that Guild Wars 2 seems to have at least as many, if not more updates to their game many others.

Now I am not a fanboi, nor am I a hardcore player (I enjoy my marriage and full time employement and the benefits gained thereof). What are your perceptions?

tbh I can’t think of any game that has done such regular content updates every month (in some cases 2 in one month)

Now the quality of each release, yeah, that is up for debate in regards to secret of southsun for example.

even though i KNOW anet have seperate teams for cosmetics and content i still get annoyed when i see regular cosmetic content instead of emmersive content, hence subs being good in some cases.

I’m quite happy with the amount of updates in GW2, but I wish more of it was permanent.
Rift is/was P2P and I was impressed by all the content they released on a regular basis. But, last I heard, they are going F2P as well, or have already done so.

Edit: @Karizee, I don’t mind paying a sub and I definitely felt it’s been worth it in most of the MMOs I’ve played. GW2 has so far cost me more money each month than any MMO with a sub.

Some sub-based MMOs don’t even get content updates. The dying ones for example have remained mostly untouched for years. Even the major ones can see nothing new for months. Blizzard for example was told to release more content quicker by the higher ups to compete with free games.

They’re going f2p, right now no game except WoW can survive as P2P. It’s simply no longer viable, and it has nothing to do with game quality. The only reason WoW still works as P2P is because it came out at a time when MMO competition was weak at best and honestly still a “niche” of sorts. Plus it was Blizzard and Warcraft.

(sorry I know off topic, but wanted to put that out there before anyone came to the conclusion that Rift was horrid. People seem to have this idea where f2p = horrid)

The living story stuff is fun, but I don’t really dig it as the permanent model. I would like more personal story, new permanent chapters and content that lead up and deal with the remaining dragons.

I mean…there are still other Elder dragons out there causing all sorts of ruckus. And Anet has mentioned living story being their go to content as opposed to traditional expansions. So what does that mean for the larger story or Tyria as a whole?

One of the things I enjoyed about GW was that each expansion meant the story for my characters was largely expanded. Prophecies characters had new continents to explore. Factions/Nightfall characters let you go back to the original campaign and play it new ways.

Tyria now just seems really closed off and confining. And it’ll be a shame if the living story way of things keeps it that way.

This particular pricing model is just ingenious. I don’t agree with the lottery boxes, at all, but I do agree that it is a smart way to increase the bottom line!

Tbh I don’t think it’s a secret that f2p is more profitable then P2P, and B2P (GW2 for example) is also potentially more profitable.

I really do hope B2P becomes the standard, it’s the best middle ground I feel.

I remember when GW1 first came out. It was the first major B2P (that I know of at least) and no one in the gaming press thought the model would be sustainable.

Oh how wrong they were.

They weren’t entirely wrong, though they mostly were. The model was it was when it first came out wasn’t sustainable for very long. Back then, the idea of an MMO running a decade+ wasn’t really something anyone considered, so for GW1 the idea was just to push out a new xpac every year. But then Anet quit focusing on GW1, quit putting out xpacs, and the money quit flowing as freely…

Then came the in game store. THAT became the sustainable model.

GW2 learned well from its predecessor and will probably be far more profitable because of it.

Yea, that’s the good thing about F2P games. You only need to spend as much cash as you feel like, as long as it’s not P2win, which GW2 is not.
I don’t mind that I’ve spent more on GW2. So far it’s mostly been charslots, bank and inv space and some vanity items. My monthly cost will be less now that I’ve got most of what i need.

But many people will spend a lot more in these F2P games than they would in a P2P game. Especially those who really want that weaponskin hidden inside an RNG box. :p

The only “game” with more updates than this Second Life.

And that should also speak to why quantity over quality is not exactly ideal…

If anything GW2 needs to slow it down, and ramp up the QA, editing, and maybe hire some more story-writers. I’m not yet willing to demand they push out the current ones – because there is hope in what I see from them. But I think they’re in an echo chamber and need more varied opinions.

In fact they even admit with pride to being in an echo chamber – in one video two of them note going into a closed room for a day…

The coders seem fast enough now -but they too need maybe 1-2 more weeks to not just put in “stuffzz” but make it good and integrate well. This last Karka Queen patch: put in a big mega boss really fast, but no time to notice that her timer is not syncing well with nearby spots going contested or spawning mobs so thick they cull on people trying to reach the queen, and of course – the queen herself having a mechanic (egg toss) that seems too trivial to matter making the fight feel like a straight health sink spank it fight.
- One more week of testing, and a week after of tweaking, and this would not be as likely to occur…

Absolutely. Don’t know why anyone would pay a sub these days.

Depends on the game. I play Eve, but haven’t actually had to pay pay for a long time (using in game currency to pay for game time). Also, If someone came out with a game that had GW2 graphics, WoW’s UI (with all the customization and responsiveness), and SWG (pre-CU) crafting and resouces, and DAoC’s game play…

I would pay 3 times the normal sub cost to play THAT game…I wouldn’t even need to think about that.

If any game out there has the best regular updates I’ve seen, then it’s Planetside 2 which is entirely F2P. They have a general update every 2 weeks, the equivalent of the updates GW2 has every other month.

Guild Wars 2 gives updates, but most of it ends up being temporary content, flavor of life changes, and any balancing is at a turtle’s pace.

Quality over quantity.

If you like temporary content to keep you playing, then this model is fine for you. But I think the distinction needs to be made between that and the game actively being improved, not just temporary content to hold you over until the next update.

I’m quite happy with the amount of updates in GW2, but I wish more of it was permanent.

We’ve been playing around so far this year with a lot of different concepts to see what works for a living world game, and see what players liked and didn’t like. Based on all of your feedback, you’ll be seeing a greater degree of permanent content built into future living world releases in 2013. And of course, some things you’ve seen before may return again, in its current form but updated like SAB or holiday festivals, or in a new form entirely….

We’ve got a few more updates coming more along the lines of what we’ve done so far in the vein of holiday festivals, but as the year progresses we’re going to layer more permanent changes and content as well with each living world release. I’ll toss a blog post up in a couple of weeks that outlines high level, where we’re taking our living world style updates specifically in the future for more clear transparency once we’ve got it all ironed out.

As always all of your feedback and comments are greatly appreciated, we’ll continue to adapt and grow this strategy and concept as we go. As we’ve said before, we’re trying something very new and different here, and in some ways we’re learning along with all of you how we make a living world style game work.

Hey Colin, I’ve been wondering. Whatever happened to making the living world as awesome as possible insofar as dungeons are concerned within the year of 2013? We’ve seen an AC update at the beginning of the year, but with Rob Hrouda taken off of dungeons to work on the living story, dungeons have been abandoned for quite awhile. Will we still see that update? And furthermore, will it be sooner rather than later? I’d hate to not see anything until December, and currently there are more dungeons remaining to be updated than there are months left in the year.

That’s all great Colin and I like that your team is providing content that can easily be done solo/group and/or with pick-ups in open world. Not to mention that the content itself (such as the events and/or various instances) will be retained a bit more in the design/residuals moving forward. Nonetheless, I’m still concerned about the content’s degree of difficulty - any thoughts on how some of the content might be catored to provide an increase in difficulty and cosmetic rewards while not alienating the casual player base that does not have an interest in more difficult content? Just feels like there isn’t much to do that involves only an individual’s friends + guildies in a challenging-large (more than 5 person dungeon) setting. Although I still have hope it’s getting your attention and potentially being developed! Guild Puzzles for example is an awesome mechanic I’d love to see applied in a 10-12 person dungeon w/ a few bosses sprinkled in and cosmetic upgades + hard/normal mode settings! Think about it!

*Edit* - This thread sums up some of my thoughts on the current PvE content, how it is being implemented, and a potential expansion upon the Living Story ideals:

In that case: I’d love to see the next chapter of personal story continue on semi-regular basis.

I think it would be nice to handle, for example the next dragon, with slow steady progress, then by just dumping it all on us at once and people racing through it all in 2-3 days.

It would also have a nifty effect where everyone would be up to the same point in the story at any given month, so you could freely discuss the story with others instead of worrying about spoilers.

It’s kind of an illusion, like a lot of things in this game. We’re being tricked to pay more than a sub for a lesser game than a sub-based one.

Really? I’ve spent about £30 in the gem store since launch, and for that I’ve gotten 8 months of play time and a bunch of extra items. In a sub game that would have gotten me, what? 2 months of permission to play the game I’d already paid for. And an invitation to spend the same again in the cash shop, because I don’t think there is an online game without one these days.

Some people do spend more than they would on a sub. But that’s their choice, if they don’t want to or can’t afford it or whatever they can keep on playing, whereas if you don’t pay your subscription you can’t play at all, even the content you’ve already paid for.

I think this is part of the problem. I’m sure you guys and gals are working on it, but honestly until some of the removed content actually comes back in some form (specifically parts that are already intended to come back like SAB or holidays), most people are going to think this is just talk. If we had some parts already back in some form, like a bounty or something, there’d be a precedent that would begin to tide some players over.

Of course, I know many just want the dungeon bosses revamped like AC already started.

More permanent content is good though. We like it when the game grows instead of feeling like it’s mostly shrinking when content is removed. That part really sucks.

I like that they are making an effort to update more often don’t get me wrong, it’s the content of those updates that bothers the hades out of me.

The lack of concern for PVE balance.

The serious flaws with the LS making the world even more empty.

The lack of permanent content (yes I read what he wrote).

And the mismanagement when it comes to squashing bugs we’ve had since before launch makes me question where this is all heading. If they truly did make a buttload of money as NCsoft’s report mentioned, then why haven’t they hired contractors to work these things out in one major patch to squash these problems once and for all? Why hasn’t any of the money I and all the rest of the players been put back into this game to make it the best it can be?

And in full f2p it could give you years of gameplay so what’s your point?

A lot of f2p games give you 2 character slots, and charge for certain areas. I tried to play ToR again recently, and I got to do like 1 WZ a day. Also doesn’t Lotr charge for the later zones?

There are plenty of other games that give you full content, you just named games that failed as p2p, they are always like that.

Yeah, but who’s going to play Maple Story? :P I also hated Neverwinter.

Then don’t say about this game having more content then other, just by putting some achievement now end then doesn’t make it “real” content. Only big content i have seen is MF dungeon and those solo missions (SAB is a joke to any MMO)

Oh, I wasn’t defending this game. Just saying most f2p games (from the start) are a joke :P I’m actually hoping my next MMO has a sub.

SAB was awesome btw >.>

I have been playing, casually and otherwise, MMOs since Pre CU SWG. I have played over a dozen such games and I have found that Guild Wars 2 seems to have at least as many, if not more updates to their game many others.

Now I am not a fanboi, nor am I a hardcore player (I enjoy my marriage and full time employement and the benefits gained thereof). What are your perceptions?

My perceptions are that they are mostly either fluff or worthless updates apart from the final part of Flame and Frost and going back further FOTM (ignoring the ascended item fiasco). The finale to Southsun was insulting. Bi monthly updates means squat if the quality is poor.

It says a a lot that GW2 has persuaded me that the sub model is superior.

Aliera Zero – Guardian / Reaver Zero – Necro

Most of the updates were definitely pointless. Blizzard had countless updates and tweaks to the game every day. But, WoW also had about 4 times the content that Guild Wars 2 has at the moment, so I found myself happy with the amount of content I could complete until an expansion came out. In other words, I didn’t need the constant updates that GW2 has to do constantly when I was playing WoW. So GW2 has a lot more updates than WoW, but WoW’s updates were better, with less bugs.

I find it rather ironic that a game with a ‘living world’ does not possess dynamic weathering like rain & fog or night terrors, don’t mind me I’m just poking fun.

Guild Wars 2 is not a sequel to the original Guild Wars but merely an alternative story setting.

I get those while playing after a binge.

How long will it take to get PvP updated? Judging by all of the ‘content’ that has been released so far, PvP is essentially a forgotten item in favor of temporary content, RNG boxes and meaningless gem store updates. New armor types are being added with every update, but PvP still only has the very basics, and suffers from a complete lack of variety in terms of the builds that people are using, in addition to the obvious lack of variety in terms of Spvp itself, since there’s still only one game mode for the sequel to a game that was a PvP powerhouse. And what about the endless grind, the ridiculous amount of hours that it takes to achieve each new rank in Spvp? I personally have only gotten to rank fifteen, but comparing that to grinding out a legendary, well, I’m on my second legendary now, so I’m sure you understand my point, if you’re actually taking the time to read this short rant.

I’m hoping we see permanent changes to some existing zones in the future, like Orr’s recovery and new shift in focuses and content there while we also expand into new regions of the game, as it would be interesting to actually be able to “live/play” through the changes in Orr and the overall primary storyline and changes to the world as a result.. New dungeons, armor sets, weapons, and sandbox-esque features would be amazing too for permanent content as well.

There’s a big big reason for this that most players have ignored or outright lied about trying to make it not happen.

PTR.

WoW used the PTR big time and it saved the players alot of headaches in the long run. This game uses some kind of weird testing I’ve never seen before in any mmo out even the F2P ones that are old as dirt as well as the ones just released, they all have PTR’s. It’s just essential to make sure that mistakes don’t happen, mistakes like the three weakest classes in this game.
