That question goes both ways; why are people against f2p players? It allows more people to try the game and if it is for them, they will purchase it and keep the population going.

Some people feel there support means nothing to ANet, and the game going free to.play means that yet again, new players get a better deal. And before you start with the 40 release BS, most of that has gone and it not coming back anytime soon if at all. So the f2p accounts can play everything in the game a payed account can. I’m not being salty or anything, just when people use that as a shield or that I should be great full, I really don’t see why I should. ANet did that to keep.me playing, if I’m playing I might buy some gems. If I buy gems once, I might do it again. But only if I’m still playing the game and playing. That free content was to keep players in game and buying gems. Nothing more. ANet is a business, as much as I may like the people working there and they stuff they put out, they still want my and everyone else’s money. If they didn’t, LS2 would be free.

I have mixed feelings about GW2 going Free-to-Play. From a business perspective, it would have been smarter for A-Net to do a level cap at 60 because it would have forced a purchase decision and questioned “Did you enjoy GW2 enough to purchase the full game?” As it stands now, many players will level a character of two to 80 and move onto greener free MMORPG pastures. Less chat options and inventory space are really not that restrictive to the casual, bypassing player

That is true. The only other free-to-play game I had played was LotRO, and the community there still managed to be mature regardless, even in the starting areas, so I don’t have much experience with bad f2p models.

I guess it is good that free accounts won’t be able to use the map chat here.

To be fair, I bought the infinite continue coin too. But I don’t think GW2 going free to play has anything to do with Anet trying to screw you over as an individual.

I imagine Silk and Linen will be on the restricted list, they’re essential to the game. That market will probably drop. But seems ok otherwise.

I will try to respond in 2 forms, as objectively and subjectively as I can, since the whole “I paid 60$ for 3 years ago, tried all the living story/events and therefor everyone should do the same” argument just does not hold up anymore….

Objectively, would it be fine if new players came in who have never tried the game and got 3 slots instead of 2? Well if A-Net does see this as a extended trail to further on support the game, then it would probably not matter at all to be honest, I got 6 slots and only use 2 of them actively, besides it would not be hard to get enough gold in game from the first slot to buy more if not also the second. so more slots just feels like a luxury than a need, its the map chat and trades that are the big thing.

Personally it does not matter for me, never did. The idea behind this can always be seen from how people have lived. I get that some people do not want others to get an advantage to get to the same place…….But I always thought it was a good thing when the person who does not have enough money, or are insecure if the computer can take it, so never did a move got to try it………………Guess it simply devide people on what conditions everyone have lived on.

-To sum it up, I honestly don´t care what they are getting, as long as it does not affect my game play negatively, like in map chat, or people try to somehow cheat the system with having multiple accounts without paying for them.

Look, I get it. ANet is a business. A business exists to make money.

But this is something else again.

First, whether or not it’s true, it feels like “Guild Wars 2: Heart of Desperation.” It makes me wonder if the random rumours that always crop up in any MMO are true for GW2: Players are leaving in droves and numbers are way down.

Frankly, I feel somewhat cheated. I have friends on the European server and on the American server. I can’t play with them together, so I bought the game twice – at full price. Two accounts. Both at $60 a pop.

And now it’s F2P, restrictions or not, and all people who paid full price for the game will get is a new character slot.

What’s done is done, and now that the Pandora’s Box of F2P is open, there’s no going back.

The wiser course of action would have been to drop the price. Take it to $30, or put it in the $20 bargain bin.

I could have taken this a lot easier if that’s what’d happened.

How could ANet not have known there would be backlash over this?

I bought gems today, before I found out about this.

I assure you, it’s the last gem purchase I’ll ever make, and at $49.99, I will certainly pass on HoT.

Simple. Stop responding to him. If hes trolling, thats how you deal with a troll. And you making assumptions like he is. First of all, IF you make a Game which people spend money for F2P, then for the love of god: Don’t treat the ones who’ve spend money like idiots. I’ve bought GW2 AND HoT Preorder, I do not have unlimited Account slots, I do not have unlimited bag slots and I do not have any sort of prestigeous Deluxe-Stuff.

You should AT LEAST upgrade the accounts of those who’ve purchased the Game(s) in a way that makes them feel like not having thrown their money out of the window… or just give them a generous (!!!) amount of Gems.

Second, I’m not a ranting child yelling I’ll quit because you didn’t do what I want. However, I do have my share of expiriences with F2P RPG and as of this day I’ll be actively looking for an alternative, for which I do not mind spending money to purchase.

Lastly, you said you’ve planned ahead for all eventualities in terms of economy etc. but let me assure you: this is not possible. As long as their are ways to trade with customers and/or upgrade the account, there are infinite ways of making GW2 just another F2P RPG, with the same problems all others suffer from.

PS: I would NOT have bought GW2, I would NOT have preordered HoT and I would NOT have spend money for additional Char Slots if I had known that it will be Free2Play at some point. I do feel cheated and Anet has sunk in my appreciation to Gaijin and EA level – which to me stands for “Wallet closed”.

I can not see myself buying further Add-Ons or future Games unless they decide to solve the situation in an acceptable manner. And to be perfectly clear here, I am certainly not talking about some sort of Skin or whatever.

Because while there are legitimate concerns about abuse of the system, more people actually playing the game is always better. Whether the person is bought HoT, bought base game only, or is a free to play player doesn’t matter when it comes down to it.

i think that the “restrictions” are not restrictions at all, you can with 2 slots do anything, takes a little longer but you can do every single thing on this game so no… F… the new ones that gets everything for free. (not they exp, but yet core game is plenty)

Because, even if for free, I wouldn’t desire to play a game I consider unappealing and\or unfairly expensive for what it has to offer. Even if I can play for free, why I need to spend time in-game if that time wont bring me any enjoyement?

It’s not just me, there are many other people I know that feel the same and we all ended up uninstalling the game to make space on our HDDs. I could even give you more detailed reasons about mine, and others, discontent about the game. But it would be wasted on someone whom sensibilities allow him to disregard others’ opinions by cheesy statements.

The forum may be full of grumpy people in your eyes, in mine it’s better to look grumpy than to look that cheap thing of being whom believes that a cheesy phrase and him believing to be cool would entitle him everyone’s attentions and admiration.

ANet is completely ignoring the Veteran Players to lure more newcomers to purchase the game. Yet to those Veteran Players has been asked to display their love for a game that doesn’t love them back and to purchase the Expansion for an insanely high price considering the content. I can’t be positive about this, I don’t feel I should be positive about this, I’m not the only one feeling like this.

Second: I suppose your father has raised you poorly then, if you are not aware\able to understand that older and more mature people could find your insistence bothersome. I’m not making, and have no intention at all, of making fun of your parents at all. You started involving your parents, saying I’m not your father (Thanks to whatever supernal entity exists in the universe for this, I doubt I could’ve lived with having to raise you properly giving your current attitude.) and I just pointed out that I felt bad for him.

You’ll have to understand that in some cultures family is very important, and it’s normal to assume that a child’s action are indicative of how his parents (Often even his own household as well.) has raised him.

Not only are they going to get more players out here making the game more full and enjoyable for the Vets but they’re also expertly preempting the trolls, bots, and gold farmers by severely limiting they’re access to the tools they would need (chat and TP for example) to disrupt the game.
To the people complaining, please get over it. The game is 3 years old. Bundling the base game with the expac is common practice. The game itself has been on sale in the past for next to nothing anyways. Were you ripped off then? The free players are only getting a small taste of the actual game and the community that comes with it. They can’t even hang out with everyone in HoT when it arrives unless the shell out the dough. Like the original poster, all my experiences with F2P have been bad. I was really starting enjoy GW2 and now it has that F2P taint. I’m not sure how this will affect the game long term, but one thing is for sure, I’m sure as heck not buying HoT now until we see how this all sorts out. Don’t want to be on sinking ship at this point. I’ll go find another MMO.

I’m hoping this will be good for the game. Bring some new players in, while avoiding the possible negatives.

Because there’s no reason to be hostile to the f2p players. They want to enjoy the game just like I do. They might even decide to buy the game based on their experience. Why would I be hostile to someone who hasn’t given me reason to be that way, especially when it’s someone who might go on to support a game I’ve enjoyed playing for the past three years?

That being said, I do think the 2 slots is more than enough for f2p players, and I agree with most of the restrictions in place for those accounts.

I bet people don’t even realise this game was already being sold for 15-25 euro’s depending on where you’d pick it up, before the HoT preorder anouncement.
A few months after HoT, if it wasn’t included, it would have been at 10 or even 5.
The restrictions are really heavy, something most people will want to get rid of eventually. But that’s the beauty of it, they get to try it. Imo this is perfect marketing, since you draw allot of new players in, and instead of locking the full range of things behind a certain subscription or gemstore thing, they lock it behind the expansion, in my personal opinion, that is very smart.

Man, this is nuts. I feel so bad for Anet. They made an incredibly boss move here. Not only are they going to get more players out here making the game more full and enjoyable for the Vets but they’re also expertly preempting the trolls, bots, and gold farmers by severely limiting they’re access to the tools they would need (chat and TP for example) to disrupt the game.
To the people complaining, please get over it. The game is 3 years old. Bundling the base game with the expac is common practice. The game itself has been on sale in the past for next to nothing anyways. Were you ripped off then? The free players are only getting a small taste of the actual game and the community that comes with it. They can’t even hang out with everyone in HoT when it arrives unless the shell out the dough. Stop looking at this as some offense to you personally. Anet is trying to build up their community and get make this expac drop an awesome experience full of new players and friends.

No doubt, you’re right. But this is a separate issue. the price drop is going to happen either way. That’s a consequence of the game being an older mmo. Hopefully Anet will be creative when dealing with it.

Because, even if for free, I wouldn’t desire to play a game I consider unappealing and\or unfairly expensive for what it has to offer. Even if I can play for free, why I need to spend time in-game if that time wont bring me any enjoyement?

It’s not just me, there are many other people I know that feel the same and we all ended up uninstalling the game to make space on our HDDs. I could even give you more detailed reasons about mine, and others, discontent about the game. But it would be wasted on someone whom sensibilities allow him to disregard others’ opinions by cheesy statements.

The forum may be full of grumpy people in your eyes, in mine it’s better to look grumpy than to look that cheap thing of being whom believes that a cheesy phrase and him believing to be cool would entitle him everyone’s attentions and admiration.

First: I have provided no positive feedbacks because, from my point of view, there’s nothing to be positive about. ANet is completely ignoring the Veteran Players to lure more newcomers to purchase the game. Yet to those Veteran Players has been asked to display their love for a game that doesn’t love them back and to purchase the Expansion for an insanely high price considering the content. I can’t be positive about this, I don’t feel I should be positive about this, I’m not the only one feeling like this.

Probably. I see no obvious benefit for a time limit other than to try to force people to buy. On the other hand a time limit would make a lot of people try to rush through things which can easily lead to burn out and that is the last thing you want want to happen with a new player.

I think they did good on the restrictions but I disagree with unlocking squad chat at level 30. If you are showing a friend around the game before he buys it you shouldn’t have to use local chat and whispers to communicate.

You don’t need squad chat for that unless you are planning on doing that with 5+ friends at a time. Squad chat is not party chat.

With GW1 the various installments, beside I think Eye of the North, were treated as indipendent games. Or at least, if you owned Factions you didn’t needed Prophecies and vice-versa, I missed Nightfall but I’m pretty sure it was the same. HoT isn’t going to be the same thing, I’m not even sure if the campaign\pve in that will be even that long to justify the price.

On the other hand Factions felt like it was much smaller than Prophecy and it was priced similarly to HoT. In this comparison HoT and future expansions actually seems like a better deal except Factions/Nightfall gave 2 character slots.

Yes, but with the price drop, the gold sellers had still to buy the game. Now they can farm lots of golds, keeping the account one of these Free ones until reaching enough money. Sell it in a weekend (When the staff is generally on vacation.) then just forget about it. It’ll be pretty harder to found out. And even if they’d be farm botting, losing a free account for that wouldn’t waste a Code.

I don’t really see how gold sellers would be an issue, if anything this works against gold sellers. GW2 the core game would have eventually dropped to a price where gold sellers would have acces to buy a massive number of accounts for very low price. Now they instead make the core game free, but without allowing these accounts to send any resources to other players. Thus the usefull account for a gold seller is back at full price now. And it will always be bumped back up with every expansion coming out.

The B2P restriction helped shield this game against the common MMO mouthbreather who turns pleasant communities toxic.

Whilst an influx of new players sounds good from a business sense, in the long run it could introduce destructive elements that bring the whole game much sooner than it should be put to rest.

I bought the game less than four months ago for its full retail price of 35 pounds. Expansion was announced shortly after. Not only do I have to pay another 35 pounds to access that (if only I would have waited about three weeks!) but now my original purchase was rendered meaningless less than four months after said purchase. I wouldn’t be so disheartened if I had bought the game when it was discounted but I paid the full asking price so recently. That’s a lot of money when you’re moving countries since every bit counts until everything is settled.

Just have a bad taste in my mouth overall, especially after the downscaling nerf that made the game noticably harder for me.

But Marvel Heroes STARTED as F2P. It’s not the business mode that’s wrong itself, even if F2P generally attracts childish beings, but the cause of concern is why they decided to give that chance to new players.

As you said, over the recent months GW2 has lost many players and got a bad image, if I’m not mistaken somewhere they started even a boycot HoT pre-purchases campaign. The game doesn’t requires just love to justify the purchase of the expansion, even if I’d like the game, I’d be thinking twice because purchasing it if server after server is going empty.

Free to Play is a viable way to fill the server with people who’d make them look lively, how much life it’ll actually bring is something only time can tell.
