I like the outfits, gw2 isnt the first time they were added, there were costumes in gw1.
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Costume.

The way I think about this most recent one is, if another race is wearing it they are a believer of Balthazar.

This is the point, costumes are ok. Like cook or pirate – those are costumes. but when they release a full plate armor and make it an outfit, a little part dies inside of me. This is a waste of amazing design.

Or my Mesmer Charr can wear an Armor Imperial armor set.

Hopefully they spent the same amount of love at new HoT ARMOR-Skins, that you can earn by playing Dungeons or whatever.

Balthasar Outfit looks amazing but… it’s a an kitten outfit ;-/

but this game isn’t guild wars, if it was I want capes, more instances and build templates today

So, this being said, I know about original GW outfits. The difference is there were profession bound armor sets, now we have 3 armor classes and Balthazar outfit is a perfect example of heavy armor desing. It’s poor decision to make it an outfit. Dunno if it’s lazy or oversight. I just don’t want to pay for it or any other outfit. They have no value to me.

The cash shop in gw1 didnt give you any advantage over other players.
All those costumes was for towns only the armor people had to work for.

Just to point out. My various characters ran around with several costumes at all times in PVE zones and the dungeons in GW1. Yes i worked for the armor, but you know what? i did that in GW2 as well. (Should not be able to wear outfits in PVP just like in GW1.)

I like the costumes when they first started releasing them. Now, they are sort of meh. I don’t even use the ones I bought…they give little to no customization (lets be real, this game is all about the dress up with skins). Only having 4 dye slots is another costume killer for me. I have all those lovely dyes and can only use 4? No thank you.

Next costume I’d by would have to be something so spectacular that it makes me literally say ‘I must have that’. Nothing since the Noble outfit has done that.

Okay you win. I had just never actually seen it myself over past thousands of hours.
However in my opinion its outrageous in a game which is all about skins they put all the new skins in gemstore except for 1 new in pve and 1 in pvp which in my opinion dosen’t look that good. As well as a couple in first living story.
I mean why couldent they just make an fun elite instance with some rewards.
Is it too much to ask for actually content in the game.

We just got the silver wastes with 3 new armor sets(https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Carapace_armor), and 3 clone armor sets(https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Luminescent_armor) It might not be an elite zone, and it for sure might not be what you are looking for, or you might not even like the appearance of those sets, but they did get added. We also have gotten several other armor skins added to the gemstore.

At the moment, everything is going for HOT) and i like someone else here in this thread said hope they keep the armor to the real game and out of the gem store. I already have to buy trans charges, i dont want to double dip for armor skins too(Why i have only bought 2).

Last year everything was about china. This year everything is about hot. How many excuses are you going to make for them? Nest year is going to be everything about LS3?

They added one armor set* as a game reward and many useless outfits in gemstore.
I understand the revenue argument. I don’t understand releasing cheap, lazy product.

*carapace is just 1 set with 3 armor classes, nothing amazing and luminescent is just a reskin so can’t take it as serious content

The most of you seem to beleive in false gods, clearly not in iron….

convienent as the outfits may be, single purchase, easy switching they are a couple of steps down from armors. not able to mix and mach is one, but I’m just repeating myself now:

You cannot read the outfit, you can with the iron.

If armor breaks it vanishes, if armor breaks underneath a outfit, you see the outfit, no change, you cannot see weight classes from a distance… leaving us no idea whatsoever we are up against, or for that matter who we should aid…

Outfits are in a sense game-breaking. If A-Net would make transmutation charges free, all people sniveling here:" Yes it’s so convenient.""would be the first to say they should all be converted…

Evon Gnashblade himself should be dissapointed in outfits… as the loss of revenue of the things continues to stack…. each time as ppl pass by another timeconsuming armor due to them having outfits…

I bought 1 outfit and I got the witch thing later on. and I use neither on 15 characters. I do not find the things worthwhile, I cannot choose the workings of dye channels on pieces, nor can I remove pieces. They are cheap replacements.
They do not make 6 armor pieces not because of clipping but because it’s easier to make an outfit.

-edit-

23 lvl 80’s, 9 times map, 4ele, 4ncr, 3war, 3grd, 3rgr, 2thf, 2msm, 1eng, 1 rev.

Rely on iron, Not False Gods!

Charr wearinf balthazars outfit is rediculous, Why do the armors linkedto human gods be used for all classes? It clashes with lore….

Also MORE armors. even if you’d start with the “lost PVP armors” we would have something…. the outfits are a cheap lorebraking substitute to actual content

The outfits are also breaking the identification of classes now. Problems will start arising when you can no longer determine light from heavy classes or when all people are wearing same outfits…. which is potentially gamebreaking.

SO no outfits in PVP/WVW.

Or a -better option- to disable them everywhere, not for a standard armor but the owner’s original armor, with dyes preferably. So I can see what I’m fighting, or running with. So I can make my guess about the capabilities of friend and foe…

Dress up is nice, but not to a point it can be abused either by not showing me what you are or not showing me what you can do….

That is the main reason why I prefer armors. I have a very powerfull rig and I’m not amused by the “standard-armors”… making everybody wear the same outfit but now based on class….

char would wear balthazar outfits for the same reason many people have dreads who are not rastafarians: because they think it looks cool.

The current balance between outfits and armor sets is pretty good for now.

I dont log in much but i had to respond to this BS. We have gotten outfit on top of outfit for a while and im tired of this. They need to stop doing this. Outfits are okay but let ppl chose if they want to have the look as an outfit or as an armor.

Please ANET. STOP MAKING OUTFITS ONLY ITS LAME. This great piece of armor you guys finally made after so long is a stupid outfit. There hasnt been a good lookin armor set in a while to my liking but then the balth one shows up… and its a kitten outfit.

Please give us the option to buy either the armor or an outfit version of whatever is on the TP. Please ANET I BEG YOU.

BS?
Lets stop with the hyperbole and really compare numbers, shall we?
Lets really weigh things here and put this in perspective.

1254 individual armor pieces of varying weights. (Give or take, my math could be off. Not counting aquatic headgears.)
46 full sets. x3 for each weight class. (Either from the Gem Store in in the game via Karma or Gold or even Crafting.)

By comparison, we have…

19 Outfits.

Not counting aquatic headgear. Or Back pieces, of which there are 112.

… My numbers might be a bit off, but it hardly seems like they are overloading the game with outfits.

So, with that in mind…
PLEASE ANET… I BEG YOU… Keep making these wonderful outfits. :p

but they are only making outfits it seems. armor skins seem to have been kicked to the curb. He says hes okay with outfits but wants an option to buy ethier an outfit set or an armor skin set of the same model. hes not saying stop making outfits, but to stop making just outfits sine it seems to be where anet is heading towards. ( at least that what it feels like currently is what i think he is saying)

But they have /not/ stopped making armor sets…

Carapace/Luminous armors say hello.
And Glorious sPvP armors as well.
And the Hellfire and Radiant sets too.

What other armor skins have they made since release?
Aetherblade sets.
Flamekissed/walker/wrath sets.
The Zodiac armor sets.
How about the Incarnate set. Braham’s Heavy armor set. Magitech set. The Phalanx Set. Phoenix Armor set. Rampart Armor set. Strider’s Armor set. Trickster’s Armor set. Viper’s Armor set.
The armor set for the Revenant coming out with Heart of Thorns is another one.

And that’s not even taking into account the individual armor pieces that don’t belong to a full set, of which there are 37 individual pieces.

So to say they are ‘only making outfits’ and ‘armor skins seem to have been kicked to the curb’ is false.

One thing i would love, love to know is how long it takes for them to make an armor set VS an outfit. I really do want both being made at all times. But i want to know the time difference it takes for each one… Not likely to ever happen…it doesnt seem to hard to do the idea ive seen posted around a few times where if you buy the outfit, you also unlock it as an armor for that weight. So you buy the balthazaar outfit, you also unlock a heavy armor skin that can be mixed and matched. Probably is the best solution, as they wont stop making outfits no matter how badly people complain about them, as they are making money off them.

because the complaint people who want armor have, is that they have virtually abandoned adding armors since they introduced outfits. This is topic is about the fact that they continue to create outfits and ignore armors.
its not about the what was available before outfits existed, its about what has happened since outfits were created.

Every time something is datamined arena net says to never take it as a promise of upcoming content. So I don’t see why should I trust that we’re getting any armor sets with hot? They released no info about it and they are always telling us not to trust dataminers.

And about old armors argument. When they released wardrobe they changed how the transmutation works and together with this they introduced outfits. After that the only things we get are outfits. I wouldnt be mad if those were actually costumes like cook or pirate but the last one is freakin heavy armor skin turned into pijama because they didnt want to put minimal effort and make it an armor skin. Together with other god armors (of different classes) those could have been amazing legendary sets. but no, cash is all that matters.

No, I’m not even mad. I am disappointed with this company. My wallet is closed for you for almost a year now and more and more it seems I won’t be buying hot. I just don’t want to support this company anymore.

So to say they are ‘only making outfits’ and ‘armor skins seem to have been kicked to the curb’ is false.

most of the armors you listed here were created before outfits existed.(outfits in their current iteration did not exist till the wardrobe april last year)
since outfits, i think we have seen, what 2 armor sets?
(feel free to correct me, i have trouble parsing all the info)

Carapace/Luminous armors

And that changes what, exactly? They still have been making new armor sets. Why should any armor made before outfits in their current incarnation not count?

because the complaint people who want armor have, is that they have virtually abandoned adding armors since they introduced outfits. This is topic is about the fact that they continue to create outfits and ignore armors.
its not about the what was available before outfits existed, its about what has happened since outfits were created.

Even if Anet had abandoned making armor sets (which, from all evidence that has been presented, shows that they have not) they would have quite a -long- way to go before outfits were anywhere even remotely close to overwhelming armors.

Disregarding all armor sets made before outfits came out, just to prove a point, doesn’t help prove the point.
It just makes the complainers seem petty. :p

There are armor sets in process according to That Shaman. He has data mined a light armor set (unnamed), a medium armor set (unnamed), a heavy armor set (unnamed), (these are probably all one named set but it doesn’t say) a light and heavy Ley Line set (and there will undoubtably be a medium also), the Revenant armor, and another set of all 3 weights (unnamed).

none of which are ingame, and may ever be in game. Many things data mined never see the light of day. regardless, its looking like outfits are growing at a faster rate than armor skins, and they have greater variation.

Just because items have been worked on and then set aside for one reason or another doesn’t mean that full sets of armors will also never make it into the game. By the time that That Shaman datamines them, they are both new (he has never seen them in the data before) and they are fairly well along.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

Its not about proving a point, its very simple common idea. People dont want old armors, they already bought them if they wanted them, 1 year ago when they were released.
Anet used to release armors fairly often, since outfits came to existence they do not. Its not a side point, ITS THE MAIN POINT.
this topic isnt about how many armors there are compared to how many outfits there are.
This topic is about the fact that they have barely released any armors since they introduced outfits, and many people want the same ability to mix and match cosmetics that they used to have with the old setup.

basically people are complaining that customization options for new cosmetics have drastically been reduced since outfits came into existence.

notice, the topic is stop creating outfits, not more outfits than armors.

Don’t forget the six sets of Glorious Armor (One available through regular PVP, the other only through tournaments) I’d say that tournament reward only armour is about as elite as you can get.

yes, when you are talking about new things, and what have you done lately, you will tend to ignore things that are a year old. People are talking about the type of cosmetics would like to see released/more of. Not the type of content that was released a year ago.

Their whole entire complaint is why havent you been releasing as much of the good things that you used to. For some one to come and say, why are you complaining, all of the old stuff was good, is basically criminally missing the point.

That changes a lot, actually. They almost stopped making armor sets and have been rolling out only outfits for a good while now. I have no issue with outfits and I can see their benefits (except for the current Balthazar one which I find in conflict with the lore), but every outfit should also be released as an armor for its respective weight. Mixing and matching is a cool part of the game and denying this is bad imo. There are a lot of armors already in the game, true, but we should also have the possibility to mix the new stuff as well.

You don’t seem to grasp the concept of “almost”. Maybe google can help you?

Hellfire and Radiant armors have been around for ages, since the AP rewards were introduced. Or are you going to tell me they did not make the full sets then, but only the head, shoulders and gloves, and they only made the other 3 pieces for each only recently? You know how that sounds… right?

So that leaves us with Glorious and Carapace. Each has 2 versions, true, but to count them as different armors is laughable since they are not only simillar, but almost identical.

So we have that. 2 armor sets (granted, for each weight) against all the outfits. But I have to give ANet a big thumbs-up for making these 2 obtainable only through gameplay and not gem store; that was an awesome thing!

Regarding the mined armors – it’s good news, but that doesn’t mean they will necessarily be put into the game; not everything that is data mined is. And they may come with the expansion, which is not exactly coming in the near future, the way things are looking. And it’s kinda obvious that the expansion will come with new armors and weapons, I never heard of one that didn’t. So the armors from the expansion don’t really count towards this discussion, since this is about the stuff they introduce to the gem store/game regularly.

There were actually 12 armor sets.

3 Carapace
3 Glorious
3 Luminous
3 Glorious Heroes.

If you want to count the Glorious Hero’s and Glorious as one, that’s sort of understandable, as they share a similar mesh. But you can’t count all three sets (one of each weight) as a single set. The Glorious Light, heavy and medium sets all look completely different from each other. I don’t know enough about Carapace armor to say whether or not the same is true with it (farming the Silverwastes is not something I’ve felt like doing), but I’d assume that it’s the same for Carapace.

Thus, it’s still 6-12 (depending on how much effort the extra sets took). Which is pretty consistent with the number of outfits, and not even factoring in any individual pieces that they might have added.

Yes that’s exactly what s/he is saying.

It is technical one set. IE, they are all classified by the same name. They belong to the same group. The group contains 3 distinct sub sets, 1 for each weight.

Too many people forget that while armor belongs to “groups” each individual “set” has its own distinct set up and coding. They don’t see “3” distinct armors, they see only the one group name and gripe complain that we “only got one” when in fact we got 3.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

more likely, they count it as one, because their charachter only has access to one.
but bringing up glorious is pointless because it was added BEFORE outfits existed. outfits came to be in the april wardrobe patch, glorious came into existence before that. Likewise hellfire and radiant existed before outfits.

so all you got is carapace/luminesence which you can call two sets, but is really one set with a different color. (which i dont have a problem with as a progression mechanic, but it doesnt really give you much as far as cosmetic variability)

point is since outfits, a compartively small amount of mix and matchable gear has been released. Also, outfits are more visually varied than the armor we have seen so far (which tends to heavily borrow from existing armor sets) being able to mix and match from shadow assassins would give you a lot more of a qualitative choice for mixing and matching than mixing carapace.

yeah, i understand that making armors is more work, so what, they are getting paid. 10 dollars per model, or 1/6 the cost of a new game, is more than enough money to make it worthwhile to put in the effort.

Thank you Lanfear for clarification, that’s what I mean. 1 set = 3 full armor skins (heavy+medium+light) and as phys stated it’s hard to count it as 3 sets since I can wear, mix and match only one armor class.

And as I stated earlier I don’t mind outfits that are costumes (cook, pirate) but balthazar outfit could have been a wonderful heavy armor, maybe first legendary armor? The same goes with Executioner’s outfit – great medium class design. The last mentioned I actually bought for the axe toy but if it was sold seperate I wouldnt bother buying the outfit.

I feel disappointed to the point I don’t care about any hype they will serve before hot.

I wish some of the outfits had been released as armor since I would like to only use some parts, but I can just imagine the intense whining that we’d get from clipping issues…

I wish some of the outfits had been released as armor since I would like to only use some parts, but I can just imagine the intense whining that we’d get from clipping issues…

i guarantee the whining would be eclipsed by the number of people who purchase it.
Just because somebody whines, doesnt mean they are happier without it. A kid whining because they wanted pepperoni pizza, still wants food, feeding him nothing is not the better option.

more likely, they count it as one, because their charachter only has access to one.

I am hoping that is not their argument, because it’s an asinine excuse. The other armors don’t just ‘not count’ because your specific character doesn’t wear them. They are still armor skins, they were still added to the game.

Ugh

point is since outfits, a compartively small amount of mix and matchable gear has been released.

10 dollars per model, or 1/6 the cost of a new game, is more than enough money to make it worthwhile to put in the effort.

i’m not arguing that we havent gotten many armors since outfits came out. Its a valid point, we have gotten more outfits than armor. However, we have gotten more armor in game since outfits were introduced. Granted its only 2 (thought it was 3, but maybe not), but I’ll take those 2 in the game over all 19 outfits we presently have! (Although granted several of those outfits existed prior to the actual “outfit” implementation).

I want them to continue the trend that has been set. Outfits in the store, armors in the game. This means that armors are going to make more time, not just due to the more complexity of design and implementation of the armor itself, but also in working it into actual game play. I’m perfectly ok with that. In the mean time, they can pump out the much simpler outfits and stick them in the store to continue generating revenue.

As for the mix and match issue, it’s a technical limitation because of how they have the underlying code set up. Yes, I’d love to be able to mix and match certain outfit components with certain armor components, but we can’t because of how they coded the game. It’s the same reason we can’t cross tier skin. Maybe some day they’ll go back and revisit that limitation, but I rather doubt it. Not because they don’t care about what their players want necessarily, but simply due to the amount of work and time it would likely involve vs the potential profitability of doing so. It has to balance out for them.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

On one hand, I love mixing and matching so I wish they’d do more armor sets and less outfits.

On the other hand, I’ve got to imagine that making an armor set is much more involved and difficult than an outfit. With armor sets as opposed to outfits, you need:
-In most cases, you’ll want a unique skin for each armor weight. 3x the work.
-You have to make clear demarcations of where each piece starts and ends, since they need to be individually equippable.
-You need to make sure that new armor pieces don’t clip too much with old ones. Some clipping is inevitable, but you always want to minimize it.
I’m sure there are more working differences, but I can’t think of more at the moment.

Oooh…
So ignoring the customization that is already -overwhelmingly- present because Anet has rolled out new outfits… is clearly much better.

’It’s not brand new and shiny!!!’ is not a good argument for disregarding things that are already in the game either.

yes, when you are talking about new things, and what have you done lately, you will tend to ignore things that are a year old.

No, it isn’t. Completely ignoring an entire body of work because ‘it isn’t new’ is nothing more then being selectively biased.
“I’m ignoring all of X because it doesn’t fall within my own, narrow, personal criteria’ is… to use your own terminology… criminally ignorant.
But, nobody here wants to hear that.

As for ‘criminally missing the point’. No… I get it, trust me.
I just don’t agree with it. (Which automatically make me hated here, apparently. lol)

Would the Balth Regalia have been nice as an armor? I suppose. Would people really have liked it better that way? Some people say so, but I dunno. I look at another armor set in the game and I can draw some hypothetical conclusions…
I’m talking about the Zodiac armor sets. I think those look great, but I see next to nobody using them. Because unless you use the entire set, the pieces clash hard with most other pieces.
Balth Regalia has a similar glow effect, and I can imagine the same problems would come up if you were mixing armor pieces.

Anyway, I’m about done with this thread. Presenting evidence as to why outfits aren’t so bad and how they have not been overdone, but then having it dismissed out of hand because ‘it isn’t new’ makes me realize how pointless it is to post anything in these echo chambers forums that isn’t a rage-fueled scream-fest against Anet.
So pardon me now while I go play the game in the new outfit I bought, because I liked it. :P

I’m not going to repeat myself about before and after wardrobe argue. You stated your opinion, I stated mine (with mr phys very similar).

I’m going to argue with your concerns about mix/match of balthazar regalia. I agree that zodiac armors have problems with mix/matching because of their uniqueness in design however balths armor is nowhere near this level of matching problem. Every fiery/glowing piece of armor can be easily matched with it – first two I’m thinking about are cof parts or hellfire parts.

You’re arguing about matching to other armors. But that’s our problem to find good matches. Old armors have bajilion clipping issues with each other yet we’re still matching them to the oblivion. Our argument is not about clipping, our argument is about lack of customisations and limiting options.

And again – balth pijamas could have been amazing armor set but it was made a costume so it’s the same level of seriousness as quaggan tonic.

I for one am happy my Guardian Norn can wear a cloth based outfit.
Or my Mesmer Charr can wear an Armor Imperial armor set.

Absolutely… This is the beauty of outfits. I love that my Norn guardian can take on the look of a martial artist/monk with the cloth Ancestral outfit. Or that my ele can appear as a fireball-throwing battlemage with the balth outfit.

ANet, you go on and keep making these outfits because I will certainly continue to buy them! They are gorgeous and often look better than armor sets IMHO…
