*Precursor Rage*
Well I did get one precursor out of the MF at a particularly lucky time on my account. So, I tried to just get all the other stuff together to make the legendary. I have 3 world completions in my bank, gift of battle, clovers, etc. What stopped me? Getting thousands of T6 materials. I had refused to buy any of the TP. After almost three months of grinding away I finally decided to heck with it and sold everything. I now have buckets of gold in my account, waiting for some skins I really want. The precursor I got was The Lover. I don’t even like the legendary that makes. AND, I can probably get 50 skins for my gold over the one that I didn’t like.
So ya, no longer interested in grinding out any legendaries… unless I were to get the rifle precursor. I might struggle along to make that one. It’s the only legendary skin I really like.
eta: if anyone has The Hunter and they want to donate it, I’m not above accepting it
If the average is 1k gold to get a precursor from the forge then I am about due one. (If not a little past due) That is good news so I’ll just keep flushing the rares as I get them. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.

That 1000g average is achieved across tens of thousands of attempts (i.e. tens of thousands of gold worth of flushes).
Since your sample size is small, the nature of random distribution means that you could be on one of those unlucky streaks where it takes 2000g.
1000g should be considered a ballpark figure. It may cost you (substantially) more or less than that amount, but you should expect it to take at least that much.

I know the odds are slim since I’ve only done over a thousand flushes so far. I am losing no more than potential gold for the sale of the rares I obtain. I didn’t craft them or buy them, they’re all from chests, bags or a rare drop over the course of, well since I started head start. I really couldn’t put a gold amount on those rares since the prices have changed quite a bit since I started the process.
It’s just nice to think that statistically I am due. Whether or not it actually happens is another story.

That word ‘due’ inclines me to offer a friendly warning about gambler’s fallacy. There is no such thing with systems set up like this for any sort of ‘streakbreaker’ or accumulating chance to get what you want the more times you try for it.
Those are honestly the sorts of things at least some of us are pushing for them to include – something that guarantees that people will eventually get what they want.
As it is? Your chances are the same every time. If that chance is 0.05%, it is 0.05% every time, and with true RNG, the human brain can easily wind up expecting a sort of logic that just doesn’t apply.
I like to call it ‘expecting the system to be reasonable’ as for why so many often wind up at least feeling, and sometimes literally believing, that they’re ‘due for a win’ the more they’ve spent on some sort of gamble or another. Doesn’t work like that.
You could spend 100,000 gold doing what you’re doing and never get anything. The so-called average of 1000g referenced? Even if that’s statistically valid, you could just as easily wind up spending 100,000g as 100g.
And that ship might never come in, no matter how many times you dump trash into the mystic toilet. Or it might on your very first attempt of a new day someday.

That’s what I do with my rares as well. Well, except for the greatswords, daggers, staves, and swords. Those I sell on the TP.
I’ve unlocked quite a few Exotic skins that way.
Today i decided to craft legendary focus. Yea it’s not so glamurous but it’s all i can afford right now. As a person who play this game only for the fun not grind, it’s all i can afford. I think its nice.
The mistake people are making is flushing money. The vast majority of people will lose doing this. Over thousand flushs? thats over 4000 rares with a conservative price of 30s the current market value of that would be over 1200 gold before recovery value. You could have bought any precursor with that by now.
You can get a legendary in a few months time if you utilize the resources that are given to you effectively. Stop gambling your money. RNG is designed to make losers out of nearly everyone and you will always lose in the long run. Don’t salvage your rares unless you need ecto. Sell them. Never insta-sell anything at the highest buy offer. Same goes for buying things of the trade post, use buy orders. Utilize your non-gold resources such as skill points, karma, laurels, and use methods to convert them into gold. Making money is stupid easy if you are able to critically think.
22k AP and over 5,000 hours played. Never had a precursor drop nor do I farm or do anything I feel is laborious. Made the Juggernaut 6 months into the game, the only one I really felt amazed me. Have 1,000s of gold to the point I am considering making eternity and reselling it for the two GS skins and making underwater weapons for the cheeve.
Try not to focus on just making a legendary. Play the game, utilize your resources effectively, and just bank em and forget about it. When you go back to look because you think you are close. You will find that you are not as far away as you think.

I, myself, am not protesting any sort if inability for people to grind gold and buy precursors. That’s doable.
Boring, forgettable and utterly inane, but doable.

What makes earning the gold for a precursor more boring than throwing stuff into the MF hoping to get lucky?

I never grind anything, heck I don’t even know how to speed clear a dungeon. My resources come from drops I get from playing with my guild and the occasional long term market investment.
You can certainly make it into a grind. If your only concern is maximizing your time value output anything turns into a grind.
I guess I can understand people’s frustration. I would be frustrated to if I threw away even 100s of gold into something and had nothing to show for it. That why I am suggesting to people not to do that. You are more likely to reach your initial investment value long before the forge will hand it to you.
Should Anet have another means of acquisition? Maybe. They probably have not figured out a way to do it without seriously upsetting the market.
The best thing I think they should do. Is make a new set of legendarys and make them or their precursors craft-able. The current set needs to be left as is.
Ideally, Id like a craftable set that involved having to earn things doing certain modes and challenges. Like completing certain long term achievements in various game modes.

In my opinion, its honestly the fact that building up to a legendary is most efficiently done by investment banking, not going on legendary adventures doing epic things.
I don’t know what’s the problem really. I bought Dusk some days ago for almost 1.300 gold. I saved for that almost half a year. I knew I have a clear goal towards I can save my money, and that keeps me motivated and happy if I get a good drop.
On average I play 2 hours a day, so not really that much farming involved. Just enjoying doing LS content and lots of dungeons. I play since headstart of GW2 and on average I get 1 legendary per year (got Bifrost already). So Twilight will be my second.
Really…before I play against the RNG gods in the forge, I slowly collect my gold towards my precious precuror. What else should I do with ingame gold otherwise? You don’t need expensive buff foods for dungeons, you don’t have any repair costs,…anything you do in that game gives you gold. For me, that system is fine as it is.
RRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWRRRRR!!!! /endrage
I wish Anet would really do a CDI on legendary weapons.
Currently the only thing remotely required game wise is that you do map completion, get 500 dungeon tokens, and 500 badges.
There should be some kind of accomplishment derived besides monetary accomplishment.
There are so many goals that they could use in the game already like, completing LS2 achievements, dungeon master, PvP champion titles, AP chests, maybe a WvW rank requirement that would be fitting to reward a component of an account bound legendary.

OK I need to quote myself from yesterday…this game is really strange in some way.
Just created 11 Krait Skin greatswords as I realizied I don’t have this skin unlocked yet. Then I though, well now that you got your Dusk alrady, just throw those into the MF just for laughts. First attept, just rare crap, second attempt: Dusk.
€dit: needless to say, I’ve never tried that MF gambling ever before.

u guys use cheat codes :P… my mind is made up … there is cheat codes and no one wants to tell me them
up up down down a b a b left right left right = dusk
“I have seen so many people find pre around me” the jelly is real

this would not be legendary if everyone could drop precursor. Drop system is ok.
So I took a bit of a break from playing the game in between the last LS episode and wintersday, I find out that one of the collections had been fixed in a recent patch so I logged in to get the collection started (and soon after, completed). But I took a look on the wiki as to which of the champ bags were being attributed to the still-broken Hero of the People collection, and one of the ones I was saving it turns out was no longer being utilised for the collection.
So I decided to open a few of these bags to clear out some of my bank space. I get to the last bag in a series of maybe 15 that I opened, and I see a familiar looking icon appear in my inventory. Leaf of Kudzu had graced my presence, making it my second precursor (now one champ bag drop, one forge), before I sold it on the TP.
I like to think my RNG had reset during my time away from the game.
“Obtaining a legendary should be done through legendary feats…
Not luck and credit cards.”
best way to find a legendary, do what you enjoy while killing every single lootable monster on the way
if you are of level, and kill something that drops loot, you have a chance at a precursor
and even better if you do it in silverwastes, because you can get nearly 200 bonus magic find from the Perseverance buff
also, if you really want precursors, monster drop is 3rd lowest, mystic forge has 2nd best, and world bosses have the 1st best chances of dropping one
either that, or its world bosses 2nd, and mystic forge first, either way those 2 options are relatively close to being top chances
It’s the only notable gold sink we have.
The droprate has to be low

January 14 2015 I got my first precursor drop from the forge. Ironically given the name of my post it was the underwater precursor RAGE. I put 4 random exos in and out it came. I’m not angry that I got a lesser pre at all I’m simply glad my account is no longer cursed.

You just used up an little luck you had to begin with >_<. But grats!!!
Why are people actually working so hard for a precursor? I play for 2 years and only got. 1 regular ascended ring so far. But the day I get a precursor, I’ll sell it to the highest bidder instantly unless they add a nice gs skin

The entire game economy is based around legendary weapons. Gold farming methods, crafting profession choices, instance clear speeds all revolve around getting precursors or crafting legendary weapons.
Basically the only way to make any decent amount of money is the following options:
1) Flipping seasonal items in off season
2) Playing the TP
3) getting lucky and getting a precursor.
Beyond those three methods, there isn’t a single reliable way to generate decent income. I’m saving for a commander tag, and it’s going pretty hard so far. But I also don’t do a lot of pve, so it’s slower for me then normal. Just wish there was a better way to get the greatsword precursors. The cost is what drove me away from even attempting to craft one. Why work all the way and be held back by a 1400 g item? It’s better to not even bother trying until I maybe, most likely not, get lucky and get one myself.
Long gone are the days of getting what you want when you want it.
Also, in my opinion, an RNG backbone decreases socialization. No longer is a guild or a tight knit group of friends required to help you gear up. Now everything can be done via a solo effort and with strangers you will probably never see again.
I think back to the games out around ~2001. We would spend a Saturday gearing up a friend in top gear in preparation for an awesome game night. It required a group or guild to participate. Everyone participated, had fun and knew that their own time would come if they helped out others. This died years ago. For those too young, know that there was a better time for MMOS. MMOS today are too controlled… from every aspect (non persistant zones, instances, currencies, time gating, RNG… )

They were only ’ better days’ if you could live on the schedule of the groups you were absolutely required to function in.
No job, no life and nothing but tone to spend every Saturday gearing p and the rest of the week chipping away at other forced group tasks?
Back in 2001, I was in my second year of college, busting my tail to keep a 3.5 GPA on a full load while working a full time job that required one shift a weekend minimum.
I had free time enough all the same to play my games for a couple hours here and there, but those so-called halcyon days your clearly pining after?
They weren’t anything great in my memory. A whole lot of being unable to synchronize with the schedules with those with nothing but time to sit around and wait for the mail.
An awful lot of having to play with what friends I could accumulate that didn’t leave me in the dust between my play sessions.
But hey, those were the days for anyone with perhaps literally nothing to do on Any day of any week but gear up, I suspect.
I wouldn’t know. MMO’s were so hostile to anyone that couldn’t abdicate real life to live on them for so long that, by the time I found it what fun it could be to regularly group with people, it was 2008.
IMO, those ‘good old days’ can stay dead in memory, and I’ll thank them to do so.
Going to use this thread as it’s the most recent on the precursor price subject other than the RNG thread.
Currently you get 55 laurels every 28 days which translates to a little over 715 laurels a year. You can exchange 1 laurel for a bag that contains 3 Tuer 6 Fine material. This equates to 2,145 tier 6 fine mats over the year or about 8.5 stacks. Each material has an equal chance of dropping from a bag.
What this does is negate players from having to buy these materials from the TP which is one of the most significant costs towards a legendary. I think they total around 1,000 gold of the cost. This frees players to use the gold that they would have spent towards the rest such as precursors.
This makes getting any legendary an achieveable goal within a year.
