It’s gotten exponentially worse, and the longer it goes the worse it will be for Anet to fix, if they even can. Prices are going up every hour, making it thoroughly, totally, completely, and any other word you want to use, impossible for the standard player to buy. People couldn’t afford them when they were 600-700g, now most of them have breached 1000. This is positively ludicrous. This system simply doesn’t work. It’s time somebody in charge does something about it. I don’t even want a legendary and it upsets me seeing players not being able to complete their legendary for months or longer after completing everything else just because they can’t get a precursor.

I agree, since the introduction of the wardrobe and conversion of legendaries to account bound, prices on some precursors have increased ~100%. Prices for some have increased substantially more than 100% in the last 6 months. Prices are increasing faster than I can make money and I don’t have enough money to flip precursors, which is where the real money lies. The wardrobe has caused serious inflation and, the drop rate HAS to be increased, substantially!!! Now I don’t play much and I typically have very bad luck with drops in this game. I’m pretty sure the RNG for drops is tied to the average number of hours a day you play. I get rares as about as often as most of my friends get exotics and other than the one precursor I got at Lost Shore, when everyone and their dog got precursors, I have never had a drop worth more than 25g (Black Dye). I quit the game for nearly 7 months due to bad drops. Constantly bad drops when you’re surrounded by those getting consistently good drops is very disheartening. That said, I expected a legendary to take me a couple years, but at this rate, by the time I can afford a legendary weapon, GW3 will be out. It should not be that only those with legendary credit cards can afford legendary weapons. It truly is “Grind Wars 2”.

In some cases, there are more legendaries available in the TP than there are their precursors…this is BROKEN!!

T6 mats are also increasing since the wardrobe change, though not as quickly, mostly due to the increased farming in Orr brought about by the megaserver, compensating partially for the increased demand. I don’t think it was well thought out how this would affect the economy.

The Legend has increased from 1155G to 1399G since last night…in approximately a 12 hour period. Spark has increased by nearly the same margin. It’s an unbelievable, and ridiculously broken economy.

By comparison, bots were never a problem to the economy, they are for many other reasons, mainly being they’re typically hacked accounts, but they’re good for the “economy” as a whole because they take a crap load of gold out of the economy while increasing supply. The gold that is made, and eventually sold back to players came from in game, so overall it’s a wash. The gem store, however, with it’s infinite conversion of real money in to gems then in to gold, is the real problem with this economy. Infinite money from an outside source=runaway inflation. There is vastly more gold coming in to the economy than is leaving…the only thing that can happen is prices go up. Granted, there are other ways to make vapor money in this game, such as selling junk to vendors, which will also slowly cause inflation, but not nearly at the the rate we’ve been seeing.

I do feel sorry for those with hacked accounts, but I do miss the days of the bots, when you could buy T6 mats for 2-3 silver and precursors for less then 200g. I remember when The Legend was 60g. Since I started playing the price of The Legend has increased nearly 2332%…and they claim the economy is fine. Well, I call BS on that.

Clearly you guys dont have a grasp of what RNG or statistics mean. Let’s say you have 1:1,000,000,000 chance to drop a precursor. This is your chance to drop everytime you loot something, doesn’t matter if you already got 1k items, your chance won’t be 1:999,999,000 for the next drop.

They do have a grasp.

Let’s say you roll a die. What’s the chance of rolling a 6? well 1 in 6. That is every single time, no matter what you’ve rolled before. It’s 1 in 6, 1 in 6, 1 in 6 etc.

However, the chance to not roll a six after a number of rolls gets increasingly slim, the more times your roll.

Chance of not rolling a six after n rolls is (5/6) to the power of n.

After 3 rolls, its 46.3%. After 10 rolls, it’s 16.1%

That’s what people are complaining about. After so many drops, or mystic forge attempts, the probability that they would have got a pre-cursor by now is quite high, but they didn’t get one.

If your problem is “I think T6 materials are too cheap and would like to pay 1.5g per item for them”, then yes, your idea would solve the problem.

Legendaries and percursors should not, nor have ever been in the TP. I also think there should be heavier controls placed on player to player trading in order to control inflation…and the gem to gold conversion should be killed altogether. If you want something from the gem store, buy gems…if you want gold…play the game.

There’s an easy fix here. Stop trying to get/make a legendary, UNLESS you get a precursor drop. Don’t “save up”. This is a game, gosh darn it. You’re supposed to be having fun, not working.

Play the game, have fun, do what you want. If by chance a precursor drops for you, great, then start your quest. Otherwise, forget it. Why continue to make others “rich” at your expense?

That’s all well and good, and generally good advice, but if you don’t start saving up early on, if you ever get a precursor drop, it’ll take you forever to get the rest of it. You need 2000-2500 T6 mats alone, 250 each, but 750 crystalline dust for Bifrost. Others don’t require as much dust.

The current method of acquiring a precursor is too heavily reliant on RNG.

No, ozmaniandevil’s advise is actually the truth.

If you are mean to get a drop, you don’t need to buy one, if you are not, then so be it. I just got my Sunrise done 2 weeks ago. Well my highest gold saving is about 200 gold. Tell me if i am able to save up to buy a precursor my entire life in GW2? No, definitely not affortable.

I got a dawn as loot and i put it in bank for a month or two to work on the golden title. Because I knew once I start the legendary quest, I will never able to make 200 gold again, and i am correct. By the time, I got almost 0 T6 materials because I either crafted exotic or I sold them. I have 0 obsidian shard because i wasted mine on some ascended materials already. I have to carefully plan every single kama, every single laurel and every single skill point in order to shorten my overall quest time. Finally I got 22 gold left after 7 months of hard working to gain my Sunrise.

My principle since day one is:
I loot it i make it, if i don’t, so be it.

WHY did you throw so many in??? Even with the pre’s increasing in cost, you’re better off saving and waiting

if no one did it there’d probably be even less precursors around, I wouldn’t be surprised if most precursors come from the mystic forge.

Precursors are increasing in price so buy the time you save 1000 gold the precursor you want might be 1500g. Also, people like myself won’t buy a precursor.

because gambling on the mystic forge is so much more epic.

The only “epic” way to get a precursor is by getting one to drop. And that’s never ever ever ever going to happen. Forging is the only way I will ever get one and I’ve come to believe that won’t happen either.

Until Anet fix this issue I won’t have a legendary. I won’t save 1000 gold to buy one because paying another player off for being lucky when I wasn’t isn’t how I choose to play. And by the time I save 1000 gold precursors will be 1500 gold.

Getting all the materials to actually make the legendary takes far, far, far less time than killing yourself and making you hate the GAME by forcing yourself to grind out 1200g just to get the precursor. They’re not getting any cheaper. I assumed with the wardrobe system that they would increase in price, and it seems that for once I was correct. Add to that the decreased chance of getting one out of the MF (since now you can get sub-80 exotics from even all level 80 forged weapons). Recipe is for higher prices for the foreseeable future.

Go play. Be free of the legendary race. Have fun. There are so many people that don’t give 2 hoots if you have a legendary or not. There are lots of other cool weapon skins in the game. No need to kill your enjoyment for anything.

well I decided to throw a measly 60g into the mystic forge and try my luck and woohoo I got nothing lol as expected.

The complete problem I see with gw2 and the kitten rng ,is anyone that played gw1 knows that certain items were always hard to get, however you knew that if you ran a certain chest that there was AT LEAST the chance of getting what you set out to get, eg Mini Polar Bear
Gw2 has no such format and I think this was/is one of the biggest mistakes of the game, that they have not accommodated the gw1 farming/collectors .If you knew you could run a certain chest for the chance at a set precursor ,regardless of the drop%, it would satisfied everyone , from the guy whom needs it for his legendary too the farmer and ppl that like collecting stuff

Anet increased the demand for legendaries with wardrobe but the supply remains the same. So the price for everything associated with legendaries have increased. That is why was best to always by the precursor first.

Example before 10 dusk sell a day 15 are put on TP. After wardrobe 20 sell a day and 15 are put on TP. So prices will increase until supply meets demand. Meaning things are selling faster than they can be produced.

this has to stop , ive being saving for a while now and then in 1 day i repeat 1 day dawn jumped from 700 g to 1000 g , this is kittened , the only persons that profit out of this are the gold sellers and black market dealers that sell items for real life money , how is Anet allowing that to even happen , the other day i read some comment from an Anet employee saying that they like the way precursors keep the economy steady and give a value to everything in the TP , the hell is that ? .

This RNG crap is flawed and we the players that buy gems and keep the game going are the ones suffering from a flaw that shoulda being fixed ages ago , this precursor inflation is unbelievable .

i just wish we could get some sort of reply on this issue that affects all of us players that play for fun not to make a profit out of the game.

I’ve gotten three precursor drops since I started playing (which was basically since the release of the game). They were Spark, Howl and Tooth of Frostfang. My guildmates always go on about how lucky I am, but I’d say 3 drops after almost two years of playing is quite relative, nothing spectacular. I usually reply by saying it’s not me that is lucky, but rather that they are just very unlucky. I also think a precursor drop now and then is a due reward for someone who has put a lot of time into the game.

Still, despite my own “luck”, most of my other guildies (some of which have played as much as me) have never gotten a drop. I’ve also noticed that drop rates are very, very inconsistent, with some players never having a drop in years, while some get a drop within their first month of playing.

The first suggestion I’d make is to tie precursors to achievement reward tracks. Give a precursor at, say, every 5000 achievement points (debatable), which the player can choose from. This would at least give a consistent reward to long-term players that they can work towards.

The second is to make precursors craftable. If you do that, then not only would it give players an alternative way to acquire them, but it would also balance out and normalize the prices of precursors on the TP (Expensive precursors would become cheaper and cheaper precursors will gain more value). The prices would also be directly linked to the value of the mats needed to craft, and not based purely on player greed or extremist profit margins. I do recall Anet mentioning the idea of precursors becoming craftable. I just have no idea why it has yet to be implemented.

Well… I tried to get my Incinerator finished for some time now… I play since beta and yet have to drop any kind of precusor even though I farm map bosses on a nearly daily basis in the evening, do lots of JPs, play WvW a lot, tried the mystic forge etc.

It happened to me several times now, that other players got precursor drops from the same mob I was also hitting (like guards in WvW), pulled them out of JP chests right in front of me, stood next to me on the mystic forge while I was throwing in hundreds of rares or exos while they got their pre after a few tries… It’s not that I think that they didn’t deserve it – I’m just wondering what I’m doing wrong

Now after a year (that’s when I officially decided to craft the Incinerator) I really start to believe in the “account based” luck (or in my case: lack thereof) and I have to admit it feels a bit frustrating.

I don’t want to buy a precursor off the TP because it would ruin the “achievement” for me. I get lots of “then it’s your own fault” or even “how come you STILL don’t have that legendary?!” due to that decision and I honestly don’t expect anyone to understand I want to get this precursor myself…

However, I think there should be an equal chance for everyone to actually get a pre if they worked towards it. And for me, farming 1000g just to see that the price has once again increased (inbetween it was even at 1700g – then there was no supply at all, etc.) doesn’t count as “working towards a goal while still enjoying the game”.

I wouldn’t mind having to do a veeeery long quest with veeeeery difficult content – but RNG for a legendary weapon doesn’t sound very “legendary” to me. I hope they will change something about that soon – but I highly doubt there will be changes for the existing types of legendaries given that many have thrown lots of gold into the MF or the TP. I think it’s more likely they will introduce new legendaries with other methods of precursor acquisition…

As long as people will pay real money for gems to convert to gold, they won’t change the mechanic. Also behind this profit-only oriented idea is why Legendaries are tradable. They take the moaning and mourning, whining etc. into account and won’t change it, at least for a certain while, be cause they can make a lot of money with this.

The purpose of maximising profit destroys the experience of the game and that makes me sad.

I’m playing the game the way you are, you know, like an MMO. I want to earn my legendary. I’ve had clovers and gifts for quite some time (maybe a year) and just need my precursor.

The major flaw of Guild Wars 2 as an MMO is their RNG which is tied to greed. Anet and their corporate overlords got used to players buying gems in a non sub game and each month they need a new fix to make them happy. Living Story updates every 2 weeks to drive gem sales on fluff armor and dyes, black lion keys for some RNG fun (sarcasm), and then a gold sink to make sure that players couldn’t buy gems with gold (you know like we were promised when we bought the game). They don’t want us to use the forge to waste rares and exotics trying for years on end to get a precursor, they NEED us to.

It’s shame, they almost made a great MMO.

With precursors, I have never suffered from the illusion that I would get one from drops or the mystic forge. It is a hope but never an expectation. And yes I have played regularly since headstart.
I did suffer from disenchantment twice (November patch, and when ascended armor was released). I left for a few months from December ‘13 until the April 15th patch. I came back with no new expectations and even less hope than before. There are things about this game I absolutely love, and things I could do without and see the game suffer for.
Precursors are just one of those things that could have been implemented better.
An epic quest reward that involved a multitude of event and game completions based upon the resulting legendary’s story.
Too complicated to implement, then as a reward to the end of the personal story line that would finally get that last green star removed from all my characters screen, and not just my main’s. A reward that is account bound and its resulting legendary would remain account bound as well.
If that isn’t ‘hard-mode’ enough for some then put it with the 10k achievement chest reward.
Just do something to keep that hope kindled.

This past Friday, I throw 20 exotic staves in the forge and got The Legend on my last try. My guild was furious, given it was my 7th precursor drop. I wanted this precursor so I didn’t sell it. To be fair, I’ve done this regularly since my last precursor drop in October and I estimate I’ve spent 1300g total since then in exotic staves being thrown in the forge.

This Saturday, I casually help guildies in CoF. I drop The Hunter in a reward chest. My guild stopped playing and went straight to the Mystic forge. This one was sold.

Actually, the gold obtained from the The Hunter will finance whatever I’m missing in for The Bifrost. ^^

Many players will find this topic uneccesary, irrelevant, or a threat to your income because you make a ton selling precursors you are lucky enough to forge but I don’t care. I have been playing GW2 since early access (I was in beta too, but that doesn’t count) and I have forged 1000s of weapons, done countless dungeons, WvW, and events without a single precursor drop.

I feel like my account has a hex on it, some quirk in the coding that prevents nice things from being added to my loot table and I’m tired of it. It’s time to end the nonsensical RNG where legendary precursors are concerned.

I quote this so I don’t have to write exactly the same. Anet, please sort out this kitten RNG system for those who don’t have Fortuna smiling on them. Actually, given all that god kitten ed effort put in, Fortuna should and would have smiled on us ages ago. Anet RNG mechanism doesn’t though and might actually be dubbed the Devil.

I don’t know what Fortuna exactly does on some of us, but I’m sure it’s not “smiling”

At least I’m not the only one wasting time on Fractals and dungeons and all those other things that “have a chance of dropping precursors”.

I will keep trying to get my pre from the mystic forge though. It’s not like a legendary is a MUST have – and obviously (given how much time/mats/rares I already invested) I’m not in a hurry… Still it would be nice… daydreams

I wouldn’t go that far and say that ANet is doing this on purpose though – like some suggested in this thread – I’m sure they’re not. I also don’t think anyone buys gems to buy their pre/legi with the gold. The only winning party I could imagine are those gold sellers, finding some victims who can’t wait for their lucky drop to happen… I really hope we will soon get rid of those…

However I’m sure it’s just the same old problem with generating “random” values/simulating luck in programming… RNG is never a good idea and maybe ANet even realized that… The problem is that they certainly can’t revert that – it would be unfair to introduce other methods for acquiring precursors (like a huge quest) when others threw thousands of gold into the forge/TP to get theirs… Maybe this is why these changes take so long – to find a compromise.

They will introduce new methods to acquire precursors, it’s been told and re-afimed several times now.

Why are you sure? They don’t employ an economist to manage the game economy for anyone’s benefit other than Anet. If precursors never dropping drive gem sales then that’s what they’ll continue to do. They risk alienating the players but they don’t actually care about players they only want consumers IMO.

You’re very very wrong.

The system benefits Anet. Unless players speak up we will never see a fix to this garbage.

I came to the forum to start my own thread but I’ll pop my thoughts down here.

I’ll take myself as the standard player who probably makes between 20 and 50 gold a week. I do my dungeons/fractals/events when I can and have 2.9k hours racked up. We’re over 18 months into the life of the game, and the majority of players who need a precursor are relying on luck and nothing more.

Please, implement a crafting system for the precursor or the scavenger hunt mentioned probably a year back which has been abandoned. Gold is harder to make now for the average player, having hidden it behind the paltry “but armour repair is free!” facade. Champ loot boxes have been reduced, and apparently the precursor drop rate has increased…but I am not convinced.

I have a legendary that I completed maybe 6 months ago. When it was still reasonable prices people could work towards. Stop alienating your players Arenanet, you will kill your own game.

Double post ahoy!

Another thought…legendaries are something players are supposed to work towards. The simple fact is that the majority of players cannot keep up with the rate of inflation. As of now, 1140g for The Legend.

There is a legendary in every pug I join, usually the greatswords or the staff. The drop rate must be pretty decent.

if its driving you the point you’re bringing in phrases like “Corporate Masters!” and “greed” its probably time for a break. That’s some real angst, and a sword with a few extra bits of glittery pixels probably isn’t going to make you feel any better.

Precursors used to drop a lot more (they called it a loot bug and “fixed” it) so those legendaries could be very old but they cost 1000 gold or more now. I’ve been actively trying to get one for over a year without success. Read my OP, I don’t care if you disagree thank you for the post.

The precursor drop rate or lack thereof is the main gold sink in GW2 and the number one method of keeping players gold poor to generate gem sales. Forgive me if I feel cheated by Anet. This isn’t a FTP game, a box price game that wasn’t supposed to act like one.

I got The Hunter a few days ago from playing WvW. My brother got The Bard (LOL) like 2 months ago from playing WvW. Basically, go play WvW and tag everyone you see, you will probably have a better chance of getting a drop.

Now after a year (that’s when I officially decided to craft the Incinerator) I really start to believe in the “account based” luck (or in my case: lack thereof) and I have to admit it feels a bit frustrating.

There was a long running thread (40 pages+) about account bound luck back in the winter of 2013, this was after the infamous Nov 2012 patch that heavily nerfed loot across the board. There was a lot of evidence that pointed to buggy RNG and account bound good/bad luck. I know I quit the game for nearly 7 months primarily because of bad drops. Even now, I don’t get great drops. No counting the automatic ones you get for temples, I MIGHT see a couple rares after an evening of farming Cursed Shore (30-40 porous bones from a single Plinx run though) and might see an exotic once every couple months.

There were a lot of theories going around from beng DPS based, to a bad RNG seed that favored certain accounts, to ANet giving luck preference to those who spend money in the gem store (Really, would you put it past them?). ANet closed the thread without any real explanation of why some people are so much more lucky than others. Again, far beyond that of what RNG should do. I’ve known people who stopped running dungeons and partying or just stopped playing because when party members ALWAYS got better loot it was just too disheartening. Even RNG, when properly implemented has a very predicable pattern and will create a bell curve when plotted. When you have someone who has 7 or 8 precursors with little or no effort compared to many others, the RNG is not working properly.

Do people buy any of their rares/exotics off the TP for throwing into the Mystic Forge? If yes, how does it differ from buying your precursor off of the TP?

Yes. I bought 4 exotics from the TP for my precursor, and it differed quite a bit because last I saw, precursors weren’t ~12g. That’s all it took for me to get my precursor, one lucky throw and it was game over for that endless grief and bitter resentment I was harbouring for everyone that had either luck smile on them for getting their precursor or worse, paying RL cash or CC’ing it to get one instead.

Guys, forging a pre needn’t be such a costly thing. Before my dose of luck I actually made 1000 rare staves to throw into the forge because I wanted to say I’ve invested the time and effort into trying my luck, like what has worked for others so far as well. That was an investment of ~400g plus mat’s that I’d saved already. Take my example, which probably closely mirrors several other people who got their’s. Maybe once or twice a week, dip into the savings for either materials to craft exo’s or buy them from the TP to have a roll for that elusive pre. I never thought I’d get mine, and I’m so glad to be proven wrong this one time. Acting on a whim never felt so good — it’s worth it.

Low drop rate forces players to use the Mystic Forge to get one. The mystic forge destroys 4 items while retuning one.

Gratz with your luck,

I just lost 470g of exo’s on it without any precurs. So yes people this blade has 2 sharp edges. 99% of the peeps are mostly on that wrong side.

That’s not a gold sink at all. The gold was passed from one player to another to buy those 4 items in the first place. It doesn’t take gold from the economy at all, just redistributes it.
