I miss DoA, UW, and FoW. It would be nice to see them return in GW2, somehow.

Yeah, same for me. I wish the devs were able to bring in something similar that would be Gw2 like.

Not asking for that to be brought back. But to have something of the same quality would just be so awesome.

Well maybe you were not playing the same game as me.

Obviously not, I was playing “casual Guild Wars”.

In hard mode, when completing a part of Doa you would have a chest that gives you garanteed gems (either titan for foundry, margonity for city of torcqua etc)

Yes but it wasn’t enough to trade for an Armbrace without repeated runs through. Also, Foundry wound up being where most runs I was on with friends . . . kinda got killed. (Room three.)

In fow and Uw, you are right there was some rng, but atleast the mobs were giving you loot that is actually usefull and worth something.

Canes were only useful to mesmers, and purple canes usually not that useful to anyone. But you can keep trying to make it sound like I was getting awesome drops that time. Other times, usually just trophies if anything, maybe one or two rares. Never, never, anything worth a significant amount.

Sure, there was a chance, but I wasn’t getting the drops so they might as well not exist for me.

Hence even though I would not always get the skin I want, is still had a chance to loot it and the end chest you give you also usefull materials

Saying it again. A RNG chance at awesome, valuable, or useful loot is not enough. A chance to loot something, unless it drops, is as good as an IOU on a bar napkin. You may collect on it, you may just wind up never collecting it.

Now look at now,

I open a chest in gw2 all i get is some green and a bit of silver. Is it usefull toward something? Nope.

It’s still about as useful/valuable as the drops I got in the Elite Areas. Or do you think every run was profitable and full of generous helpings of awesome loot?

Now back to the question

where is the high level rewarding end game content in Gw2

Note: Living story is not high level content

I didn’t mind it much either, when I was doing it. I just mind it being up on this pedestal as “the ultimate experience for awesome loot” and I wonder if I played the same game as the people claiming it. I never saw:

- Mini Mallyx
- Armbrace of Truth
- Globs of Ectoplasm
- Obsidian Shards

. . . unless I was purchasing them from people, or a total of 2 each Shards/Ecto over seven years before I plain gave up.

As for the gear . . .

- Eternal Sword/Shield
- Storm Bow

Only ever saw these as white drops. I kept them for purely cosmetic uses, because the stats were also garbage.

ANet had a choice when they designed the reward chase in GW2. Instead of rewards that accrued from doing difficult content (e.g., FoW, UW, DOA, and earlier, TotPK), ANet designed the rewards in GW2 to accrue from doing a variety of things (Legendary), certain PvE content (Ascended) or the LS of the Month (mostly the Backpiece of the Month). All of these rewards, whether they take a huge amount of time/gold (Legendary, to some extent Ascended) or not (LS rewards), can be attained by anyone. Rewards attached to difficult content will not be attained by everyone. If there is a skill threshold, some people will not be able to pass.

This choice has already been made. I see no evidence this is going to change. So, when will the OP get the content s/he desires? Not likely ever.

Obviously not enough to make my points relevant if you feel the need to ask that.

I shouldn’t need to run more than I did in order to get the “cool stuff” or we’re back to adding grind to the game.

You guys keep talking as if FoW , DoA and UW were hard contet…i´m am preatty sure that almost everyone farmed them like kitten , there was nothig hard about it , it was a daily farm , nothig more …..but one one thing i agree , the reards were bettter , at least for me , got so many armbraces that i gave them to some guildis to get the anguish weapons for the HoM achivment

In gw1 i was pure PvE player, thw WHOLE time i farmed fow , uw , doa only for gold , to buy more ectos , get better skins , get all the titels that were abel to be bought etc… i have done only PVP in the last 3 months of my gw1 time , at that only for th HoM achivment.

and now in gw2, i would say i spend half my time in PVP / WvW….and why ? because there are no titels that are hard to get in PVE , because i´m bored after the third legendary…and even if we would have FoW, UW and DoA here, i would farm them just like AC and other dungeons for gold…

so my advice to you is , start pvp/wvw and stop waiting for things that would nto change anything, doesnt matter if the new dungeon is UW or whatever, it will be farmed like it was in GW1 and anyother dungeon in gw2

It’s truly relative. The reason the rewards felt so good is because so many players felt like DOA et co. were out of their reach.

The Random Number Gods are nothing if not predictable.

Replying to both at once:

They weren’t bad when you had them down through experience and routine, barring immediately after a shake-up like UW after “Skeletons of Dhuum” were put in. And they did do a somewhat modest amount of shaking up now and then to prevent some of the more brain-dead sure-fire farming methods. (Perma-SF sin, meet the new touch-enchant-strips).

They were harder than most other content, but once you knew what you were in for and had a good group? It wasn’t hardcore hard . . . like people want to think hardcore hard is.

(Reality: Most ‘hardcore’ games are just figuring out what you need to do, when you need to do it, then executing. Even “I Want to Be The Guy” is an exercise in figuring it out one trick at a time. Or they’re reflex reaction to what someone else is doing PvP-style.)

But while there was certainly a section of the community which farmed them, there were other players (myself, and many who were in my alliance at the time) who did not do it for one reason: it got routine and uninteresting. Once it hits that point, it’s a grind.

Some people do want to hit that grind for the rewards out of RNG. Others just don’t care enough about them to do it more than a few times to do it. Same as it is currently.

Guys, they’ve been saying this since long before the game released. End game in Gw2 starts at level 1 and by that they mean their goal was at max level you wouldnt be doing anything different then what you did at level 1. What they tried to do (and succeeded if you like that sort of thing) is instead of funneling everyone to play the same small amount of content until the next big thing comes along you can play anything you choose and it was about time someone did that outside of sandbox style games.

DOA / FOW / UW where awesome, I enjoyed them very much and they were really challenging and all that sure. That being said I am not going to spend 2 years repeating that small subset of content over and over and over again no matter how engaging it might be. Its exciting until you master it then it becomes mechanical and eventually boring. It will probably become boring even if you never master it. (speaking for myself of course maybe for you such content never gets old. It will for me)

End game in Gw2 is whatever you feel like playing as simple as that. If you dont feel like playing anything then there is no end game for you. If like me you enjoy what Gw2 has to offer be it DE, JPs, Secrets whatever… Then this game has the largest end game in a themepark I am aware off.

The living story is also the cherry on the cake. New stuff / stories every 2 weeks!

At the end it depends on what you look for. You seem to value challenge and high value rewards Challenge is so far lacking entirely true though they promise to rectify that in S2 we’ll see. High rewards exist but are very very rare. If like me you value story and intrinsic rewards above challenge and high value rewards. Gw2 is simply amazing.
Different people value different things.

Ask any MMO player who has never touched this game and they’ll tell you that they’ve heard that GW2 is extremely casual and that is has nothing to do once you get level 80.

No vertical progression = No real end game content.
What will you be grinding or raiding for ? You will always lack best in slot item motivation. This is why PvE has no point to play after a while.
There could be visual, horizontal progression targets for motivation to compensate this, but there aren’t.
Lack of motivation(target to achieve) to play is the most important problem of this game.
But you can still play for fun purposes vs. other players in WvW or tPvP and you can play to grind AP. This is what I’m doing.

Am I in the wrong game?

If you want gear treadmills and constant raids that replace everything before it every few months. Yes, you are indeed. This game does have endgame content but it’s quite a bit different than most other MMOs. PvP and WvW are basically it. If you are a pver exclusively then there is going to be little for you to do endgame wise other than the LS every few weeks, and that takes… a day or so to finish off.

It is actually possible to have a gear grind without making lower leveled(or lower item leveled) content a waste of space.

I present to you, Final Fantasy XIV. The gear grind in it does make you do a lot of end-game raiding, but, there are end-level weapons that require you to do low level fates(dynamic events), low level dungeons and various other things to improve them or even obtain the items required to get them.

There is also a weapon that was just released that requires you to get like a ton of this ore, and basically, to my understanding, fuse it with one of each level of materia.

While I love GW2, compare it to just those above and you can tell the difference in endgame. GW2 has a small amount of level 80 dungeons(including exp mode), WvW(not that karma train EotM) and now Living Story Challenges after July 1st. Not even the crafting(including legendaries) is endgame since you can do it as a low level. It’s hard, yes, time consuming if you don’t have the gold, but not really endgame.

Oh and TES:O has WvW, and GW2 wasn’t the first to do WvW I believe. Every game has PvP, and there are some that have PvP as the main focus of the game. GW2 just threw what other MMO’s were doing together, took their time on some QoL stuff and bug fixes(still haven’t fixed all of them), and called it “different.”

The only thing different about this game from every other game is that the same 8 dungeons we have, their hard mode’s consist of 3 different stories. Even the combat isn’t all that different from various other games.

The actual chest reward in dungeon is so poor because I can only do it once a day. If I could repeat it and still get the same chest at the end (Like it was at the beginning) it would personnaly be better for me.

Now people will say that all pugs will go and do the easier dungeon for easy money. Well if thats the case, then Anet devs should do their job and fix the rewards properly so that it reflects the difficulty of the content.

His question isnt poor. He never said dungeons either. He was asking what you would consider good quality loot for an hour investment in a thing, could be anything.

what is good quality loot to you? some rares or exotics? some more gold?

what would make doing harder content worth your time?

you are right that low level stuff should not be as rewarding(why im glad they got rid of the queensdale champ train) and that some of the harder events or dungeons should be, but im curious as to those 2 questions i asked above.

if we are talking about GW1. i thought the loot was far to rewarding. i spent a day in a voltaic spear farming group. 10 minutes in the dungeon thats it, pulled the boss to a wall and killed him without having to wade through the rest of the monsters! i walked out at the end of the day with 4 voltaic spears, 6 embersteel blades and more than a few amethyst shields! I could farm UW all day long with my Ele/Rit spirit spammer build and get 3-4 ecto per run. Thats to forgiving for how easy it was. Urgozes warren was also moderately easy to do with the proper group, it wasnt hard…just took time. now the Deep Jade Quarry one…that was hard to do, even with the proper group it was a pain.

I disagree here. Reward should be based on challenge (Harder things should have greater gps), time(Longer things not have lower gps), or limitations (Time-locked content should be more rewarding than endless farms), not Level – especially with up- and down-leveling the game uses.

That said, the game does have vertical progression. However, that vertical progression stops when you hit the peak of the game, like it should.

The problem even with the so called end game that exist in GW2 right now is that when you are going for something you pretty much do it in the same way as everything else.

Legendary: Gold farm
Ascended Gear: Gold farm
Cultural armor: Gold farm
F****N MINI PETS:… gold farm.

Yeah sure there is other things to farm that’s not accesible through gold. Such as ascended trinkets, fractal skins and fractal backpiece and dungeon skins. But those skins have been in the game for quite some time now.

Yes, Guild Wars 2 doesn’t have gear treadmills but the game is more focused on the cosmetics so why not add more grindable cosmetics to the game? Instead we get everything fed through the gem store.

And these little other things we get are depressing rng drops from teq and wurm. And how is that armor looking? It’s already existing armor with some particle effects.

More grind for new cosmetics and more account bound and less gem store armor and soulbound equipment. You will never feel prestigious when everything can be bought from the TP.

Wildstar isnt challenging because of roles, its challenging because they built systems that are have a scalable challenge element.

For example, GW2 has a jumping puzzle, Beat it and win. Wildstar has a jumping puzzles, the faster you beat the jumping puzzle, the more you win. Just by adding a well planned reward scaling system, they take the same content, and encourage mastery.

Wildstar has interact with object quests, guild wars has interact with object quests.
GW2 the interact mecahnic is almost always just sit there for X amount of seconds
Wildstar the interact might be sitting there, might be time based, might be timing based, might be smash button, might be enemies that pop out when you do it. Might be a simon says light game. and sometimes you may get better rewards the faster you can do it, or different dialog based on your performance.

GW2 combat, has similar structure, but wildstar makes the rules a lot clearer with tells, therefore they can expect more from the playerbase. They actually build encounters and enemies to scale up with level in terms of gameplay! low level enemies are slower, with longer tells, and less variety of skills, as you get higher the time from tell to hit decreases, they have more skills at their disposal (more different tells that are best avoided/dealt with in different ways)

long story short, GW2 isnt less challenging because it doesnt have roles, its less challenging because they set their lowest level extremely low and their highest level at average. They then set up no systems that push people to play better or even notice when they do. GW2 could be one of the most team oriented personal skill based games out there with its current framework. But they just dont design it that way.

This is one of the key flaws, combined with the fact that the best way to earn money is not the best way to play the game.
While gw2 does have some challenging content out there, it rewards less than the mindless easy content.

I dont think its a good idea to build the entire games reward systems around gold, if you arent going to give more gold for content that is either:
harder
longer
requires more set up
etc

That is true, and they should give an incentive for player to go toward the harder content.

This. I feel like GW2 is the type of game that just kinda doesn’t have a set standard of “here is all your exclusive end game content to do!” you get in other MMOs. You find and kinda “make” your own end game content, and if you can’t seem to find it, well GW2 just might not be for you.

Well if I could design my own high level content that is rewarding I would have done so for a while. But I can’t. I’m not a dev…

Define “rewarding”.

The reward in this game is in the gameplay. If you don’t like the game, adding in carrots and sticks won’t change that.

Main character: Winter Harvest (Necromancer)

The problem is not that it doesnt have a set standard, the problem is that it really doesnt much of it.
The game just doesnt have a lot of depth. It has a lot of the foundations for depth, but execution wise, its not there. How many of you have gotten better at playing since you beat you re 4th dungeon?

reward is tied to game design. You can have a great game, but if you create poor incentives and rewards it will suck.

Imagine if football gave points for distance traveled, rather than touchdowns, now you have totally changed the way the game is played. Or if basketball gave additional points for scoring while open, or less points for scoring from outside shots.

Thinking that reward design is not a big part of game design is a huge mistake.

That is true, and they should give an incentive for player to go toward the harder content.

It is not that easy. Contrary to what a lot of people believe Anet really made a game where you dont have to grind for anything. You can enjoy the whole game by just playing what content you want. You dont need ascended gear, you dont need exotic gear. Even rares are optional really. That requires a few things that are at odds with what you suggest. Mainly that content has to be doable using greens and blues which in turn means that people in ascended gear more or less have kitten statistical advantage over people who play casually and dont see Best in Slot.

That makes it essentially very problematic to do what you suggest. If they make hard content that has unique rewards then they have to make it hard for people with BiS gear which essentially becomes impossible for people who are at 1/2 stength because they dont have good gear. In turn that would mean that without BiS you’re cut out of certain rewards which in turn breaks their promise.

Likewise if they do hard content that still rewards the same stuff as everything else no one will do that hard content since it will turn out to be more profitable to do the quick easy content every time.

They didn’t force you to play Elite Missions, UW or FoW in GW1, there was no obligatory grind.
In fact, I could max out my character, get the best gear, weapons and all skills in less than five hours (and it was extremely cheap).
GW1 “Grind” was optional – only rare armor skins and weapon skins.

I don’t get why they didn’t copy paste the same formula in GW2.

Arwen, all you have described is WHAT YOU don’t consider end game. You have not described what you want.

The issue is – Elite areas in GW1, were instanced and also they were based on the 6 Gods who are not involved with the game now. Those areas were Elitism ECNOUNTERS (with other players) and they were JUST RAIDS (nothing more – you said no raid so you can’t use these areas as your idea of end game play) – plain and simple. You didn’t have to know what you were doing in those areas. Just whack-a-mole is all they were – nothing special. That armor was a skin only – that is all they were. They were no different that other max armors in GW1. That is what Fractals are in this game. If those areas were SO SPECIAL NO ONE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SOLO THEM AND THEY DID.

Since you have a revisionist memory about GW1, we really can’t have ANY MEANINGFUL discussion.
