I think this pretty much sums up the problem with Dust:

http://www.gw2spidy.com/item/24277

Clearly there is a problem, I don’t think anyone can argue otherwise with a straight face. The lyssa farm managed to temporarily stabilize dust prices, but with that gone they are back on their parabolic rise.

I don’t think anyone can reasonably argue that the price increase is due to Southsun either. The price stayed completely stable for 15 days after the introduction of the new Southsun content, long past the time most players had completed and left that content. Then 1 hour after the nerf the rise in price started and is still slowly increasing.

Most of the playerbase did NOT leave Southsun though, that’s the error in your thinking. A whole lot of people who used to spend most of their time in Orr discovered the +200% magic find buff and started spending all their time in Southsun, running back and forth between two chests for most of it.

The thing is, before Southsun, Orr on Tarnished Coast was a busy place EVEN AFTER THE NERF. We regularly had temples open. We had people running the event chains there.

Once the Southsun even started, even a week after, Orr on Tarnished Coast was a ghost town. Far far less people running Orr.

I’m not sure why you think farmers wouldn’t be interested in the 200% magic find buff that only worked on Southsun, particularly before they fixed the skelk bug, but even after, there are a whole lot of people still farming the Southsun events.

I’m not sure how anyone can discout Southsun and keep a straight face.

Well we will find out tomorrow I suppose. Assuming they remove the buff people should migrate back to Orr tomorrow and according to you that means the dust price should start to fall again. If it doesn’t fall then it would appear that the rise was due to the nerfs and not the event.

If they don’t remove the buff then people might stay and the new price of dust will also stay and I consider that a problem since the dust price is out of line with what I think its useable price should be to keep casual players playing.

I would like to add a surprising discovery I made while farming Lodestones in Malchor’s:

Earth Elementals can drop T6 Dust. I’d gotten around three or four T5 Dusts from them in about an hour’s worth of play, which was surprising enough, but when I saw the Crystalline drop I was baffled. I was in full DPS gear with about 45% MF from an Omnom Bar and a Sigil.

I doubt this would be a reliable farm as you’d need Melandru uncontested and I got as much T6 Dust within the hour as I did Lodestones (i.e. one), but there you go.

For record keeping, currently T6 dust is buying at 32s 20c a piece and selling for 35s 89c a piece.

One day later…

T6 dust is buying at 34s 28c a piece and selling for 36s 20c a piece today as at 8:38am on 30th May 2013.

There’s a bit more dust supply today, though it’s nothing to shout about. It’s about 2 Bifrosts worth.

T6 dust supply – 1,488 as at 9.22am 31st May 2013.

T6 dust prices continues to climb though.

Buying at 35s 68c vs selling at 36s 74c.

3.07pm 3rd June 2013, T6 dust is selling for 39s 22c and buying for 36s 2c with total supply 1,409 pieces.

4.11pm 4th June 2013, T6 dust is selling for 37s 45c and buying for 36s 80c with total supply being 2,225 pieces.

11.20am 5th June 2013, T6 dust is selling for 39s 99c and buying for 37s 11c with total supply being 2,305 pieces.

Last 6 day buying prices from record keeping -

1. 32s 20c
2. 34s 28c +2s
3. 35s 68c +1s
4. 36s 2c +0.5s
5. 36s 80c +0.7s
6. 37s 11c +0.3s.

While the price increase is depressing, the saving grace of it all is that there is still some supply…

There’s more supply today. At least a decent amount to go around.

Total supply available on the TP = 4,966 pieces
Buying price = 36s 96c
Selling price = 36s 98c

Recorded on 10:02am 6th June 2013.

Supply remains quite decent today also, but the real test will come on the weekend.

Total supply available on the TP = 4,663 pieces
Buying price = 37s 37c
Selling price = 40s 86c

Recorded on 5:30pm 7th June 2013.

Might have to change the topic to T6 Dust PRICE crisis. Hahaha.

Weekend is nearly over in the US. It’s a working Monday morning (almost noon time now) here in Asia already.

Total supply available on the TP = 3,896 pieces
Buying price = 37s 48c
Selling price = 38s 72c

Recorded on 11:44am 10th June 2013.

Total supply available on the TP = 4,012 pieces
Buying price = 37s 37c
Selling price = 37s 39c

Recorded on 4:16pm 11th June 2013.

Just thinking aloud… If after the Southsun Cove event ends, and prices don’t drop, and rises instead, are we going to blame it on “everyone is busy farming dragon bash and don’t have time to return to Orr (sorry, couldn’t help the pun)”? And then blame it on whatever event that comes next after dragon bash….

Yep that will be the next myth. Meanwhile it could be solved with a simple method of allowing them to be salvaged from drops like they did in GW1.

Ectos are easy to farm or otherwise get hold of. Dust wasn’t/isn’t. Ecto prices will settle as supply can meet demand. The same could not be said for dust prior to the change.

Or it was a compensation for the fact that events/ls have an indirect effect on certain drops from lower populated areas where specific items are obtained from. An argument could be made either way. No matter the reason though, this seems like a good deal.

ectos up to 26 (it was around 18 yesterday)

I’m certain the drop in dust has a lot to do with speculator’s dumping their dust. If I were in game, I know I would.

Don’t I get credit for it too, for starting this thread? ;p And the daily effort for tracking and posting prices and supply.

Thank you Anet for listening!

Demand or buy listings for Crystalline Dust dropped from 35,000+ to 29,000 along with the price decline. Speculators hoard is only about 6,000. This is the initial knee-jerk effect from the announcement. There may be more out there, or this could be the entire stash that people are holding for “investment” purposes.

Dust supply at the moment is still unchanged at 4,335 pieces. At least, now we know this amount is going to increase. So relieved!

To be honest I have been QQing since the start of union waypoint nerf (found in DE section), but I think this fix is pretty well done. T6 Dust is hopefully going to be cheaper than 5s, which in turn make it sensible to ascend certain t6 mats, while keeping ectoplasm prices in check.

Players can finally breathe with relief for now, until Anet decides to review more T6 loot drop options from the 80s map, including the overall drops of T6 lodestones and kittens stones and shards, etc (which I hope comes from doing DEs)

+1 to colins for taking the users’ feedback.

PS: It’s kind of scary to think what will happen if Anet left this issue alone.

Where I do commend Anet for “trying” to solve this issue, its not really solved, the loot in your end game 80 zones is still no where to be seen, all you did here was move the attention away from 1 T6 mat for a few days, some weapons requires a lot of dust and ecto, but now we have to salvage the ecto to get the dust,

Why could you not just FIX THE LOOT in your level 80 end game zones, this is poor.

Thank you. Now if we could have a solution for lodestones that would be awesome!

Additional ways for other items like lodestones will arrive later this summer, there part of a much larger reward overhaul (outlined in very high level detail here) we’ll go into more low level detail when we update the status of this blog: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/colin-johanson-on-guild-wars-2-in-the-months-ahead/

The dust solution was a quicker low hanging fruit change outside of the larger reward system overhauls, so we figured we’d get it out quickly based on all of your feedback.

As always, thanks again for feedback folks!

I agree the LvL80 zone loot tables need an overhaul. +1, but, TY ANET for what attention you do give the community.

I have to agree with both of these responses. I wouldn’t have put it so blunt, maybe its needed, but Anet could have easily rolled back the timers in Orr and loosen the belt on DR a little to solve the dust problem. Actually, it would have made two camps happy instead of one…Farmers could farm again and dust would go back to 17s like it was for those who needed it.

This. I’d rather they fix it via drops. I use ectos for quite a lot I’d rather not have to salvage them for dust.

In fact if arenanet want to be transparent perhaps they could explain why this solution and not fixing drops?

Dust solution was needed because
-price of dust were WAY out of whack for the uses we have of it
-price of ectos were a little too low, due to added multiple ways to get a lot of those daily.

This fix work decently on both issues. Sure, best thing would have made Orr and open wordl farming effectve again, but at least this fix is here NOW instead of getting orr (and prices) fixed in 2 months. If orr get fixed, this solution can always be disabled.

About lodestones, tbh, i think they’re ok. They are supposed to be hard to get as rare mat, but the main difference is that most of them have a specific way to farm (unlike dust before fix), so as long as there isn’t any DGs nerf/change the prices will be stable.
Maybe make possible to buy a lodestone/core for x (150/250 each or so) token of said DG: how to put more lodestones in market and take away tokens from ppl who have stacks and stacks of them in storage.

Seafarer’s Rest EU – PvE/WvW – 8 × 80 chars.
Most used: Guard/Mes/War/Nec/Ele.
Yes, i use 5 chars at time. Because REASONS.

It’s only really Charged Lodestones that are too pricey at the moment and too difficult to acquire that really needs to be address IMO, especially considering some exotic weapons (that’s exotic, not legendary!) need 250 or even 350 of them, but I certainly wouldn’t be against other ways to acquire the other lodestones too without hurting their market value too much.

Also, kudos on the dust change. It was a great idea.
Ectos have been a little too low in value for a while (they seemed fairer when their price was stable at 30s~ than they did at 18s~), so this is a solid way to bring their value back up to roughly what it should be.
Likewise, Dust price has been climbing way too much since the thoughtless changes Anet made to the mobs that dropped them. First changing the mobs that you are supposed to farm for Dust drop charts to drop the Loot Bags usually instead, which only had a chance at dust among many other materials, removing any dedicated place to farm Crystalline Dust outside of red-team WvW, despite the fact all the other T6 mats had specific drop locations you could farm them. And then further changes to Orr without regard for Dust that made the mobs harder to kill, and the events less rewarding, reducing the supply even more.
As a result I had been anticipating the price of dust would rocket out of control for a long while, and it seems I was right (too bad I didn’t invest early cus I don’t care much for playing the market heh). This salvage change to Ectos is a nice well needed change that helps address the issues they created with Dust well.

I just hope now Anet have learned from there mistakes with dust supply and will think through changes like the ones we saw to Orr over the monthes more in the future before implimentation next time.

Thanks again!

Seems even Anet conceded that people weren’t going back to farm orr when southsun finished.

Or Anet doesn’t want everyone farming Orr, which is why they seem to keep giving people reasons to leave it.

ANET may indeed not want people to be “farming” in Orr (and that seems pretty obvious given the current situation), which is let’s face it, fair enough. But it was as clear as day (to some of us at least), that given the situation we happened to be in, something had to be done to change it. Which is why they have had to step in in order to prevent the prices from continuing to rise, as well as to bring up the fact that there are going to be wholesale loot changes.

The notion some had that people would just go back and farm Orr after Southsun and everything would be hunky dory without any changes, or others just spouting “economics 101, supply and demand dude!” was clearly completely and utterly wrong.

If ANET want to reduce “hardcore” farming or at least not make it so that zones (like Orr) are simply farm fests. Then good on them, so long as they bring in (non RNG/gem based) methods of getting hold of the items needed so that prices are at least relatively stable and supply is not totally ruined. The ecto salvage change and the talk of up and coming changes is a positive thing.
