Fate is just the weight of circumstances
That’s the way that lady luck dances
Why sugar coat it. Each Asian Culture absolutely LOATHS all the others (often with some possibly valid historical reasons) and the mixing of the cultures is insulting and offensive to nearly all of them because of it. (Yes, I’m perhaps generalizing and stereotyping a bit with that statement, but my intent is to simplify the overall views as I understand them).
Also, doing something intentionally offensive for a laugh is considered “cool” in some Western circles….that is much less “tolerated” in Asian cultures (or so I have been led to believe).
Maybe was better if they would have never made Guild Wars 2. So at least we could have seen Guild Wars Utopia.
Now THAT I’d like to play. I’d rather see an xpac for GW than GW2.
I’m hoping Elona gets the same treatment.
Of course Elona is getting the same treatment, they are not making it because they don’t want to offend the African market. What we really need is a totally unique continent not in GW 1, where the race will have blue skin and not offend Earthlings.
Please remember that ArenaNet just had a new child.
Its name is China.
Yep and now they have no choice but to make Cantha and make it very well they will.

Of course I did glad you noticed.
Hi everybody!
I really hope we´ll get to see Cantha and especially Elona one day. Both continents encompass a fantastic sense of innovation because they disengage themselves from the exhausted medieval Europe origins of most fantasy world. But on the other hand they represent strong, recognisable archetypes on their own. In my opinion this is an advantage and superior to completely spacy high-fantasy, because it depicts altered versions of places that could exsist…
So thumbs up for both Cantha and Elona!!!
Kind regards and have fun ingame
Benjamin
Sure. With current dynamic releases and pace of Living World, maybe around 2024.
I don’t understand the “don’t want to offend Asians” theory. Actually, I think that theory is in itself insulting to Asians by assuming that all Asians think the same way, and must and will be insulted by Canthan material. It’s obviously not true…for a reference see GW1. I’m guessing there are plenty of people who wouldn’t care in the slightest, and those who would care aren’t the people who would play the game anyway.
How about we get Crystal Desert, Ring of Fire, and the rest of both the Maguuma and Shiverpeaks before we go to a different continent entirely?
Hopefully not, before Tyria isn’t 100% explorable.
I just want to continue to ther continents and new cintinents, once tyria is finally 100% explorable for real.
so much still to explore in Tyria, theres no need to haste for Cantha and Elona, when theres stil so extremely much to explore in Tyria first.
Yes but you ought to understand that players can’t spend a whole life just finishing a little piece of story like dry top. Just give them all together like Gw1 expansions. When I can play I will finish them myself, not that If I can’t play that day that month that hour I miss everything.
http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/2bftw1/call_of_cantha/
Just seeing this amazing art makes me dream of how anet could bring Cantha to life.
you do realize they are all for GW1, the only things for GW2 are quick scrabbles and concepts for characters.
Will be some info in this year from Cantha? Official of course , and please don’t let die this topic:)
Cantha would be a great expansion! no doubt people would definitely buy it! If NCsoft wants to make money they should be whipping Anet to get this out!
Yes, Cantha would be an excellent expansion. Of course, with the China launch only having been this past May (5-15-2014), I highly doubt we will see an expansion before at least May of 2015.
It kinda makes me smile to see the persistence of players here. No matter how much silence anet directs at this thread, we keep posting.
For myself I went back to Guild Wars recently to help some Guildies Vanquish, we just finished Cantha. I really miss the place….. Oh well, On to Elona!
Why the heck would we get cantha when we dont even have the main map completed. I mean we have half of the first map. It would look kinda dumb if an expansion had cantha and half of the first map wasnt completed. Why don’t you think about that.
Um…what are you talking about? Was this meant to be a reply in another thread instead of its own thread?
Because I liked the first month of the game, and now that the “new feel” has worn off, I want it again in the exact same format. Lore/game model be kitten ed.
Uhhh, what the heck are you talking about?
People probably said the same when they heard Factions announced. Or Burning Crusade or any other mmo expansion.
It’d make more sense to have Elona first, accessed via the crystal desert which is right next to Fields of ruin, there is a gate there already.
I am assuming Demonts is responding to the high demand there seems to be for Cantha.
While I would be happy to visit Cantha again, unexplorable sections of the map have always annoyed me too. It bugged me in GW1 that we couldn’t explore the whole map. I hope they do not follow the same model in GW2, but I suspect they will.
That said though, it is only a small irritation and certainly not big enough to be annoyed if they release Cantha/Elona, if they ever get released. If they stick with the unexplorable map model and release Cantha/Elona, so be it, it won’t stop me playing. But I will always be thinking what a waste.
(edited by Rin.1046)
I too would rather see the rest of the current map to be explorable first (even though Cantha and Elona sound appealing). Maybe we will when we set out to fight other Elder Dragons – Jormag (Far Shiverpeaks), Kralkatorrik (Crystal Desert), Bubbles (Unending Ocean) and so on. Actually, the way I see it is that we’d only get access to Cantha, for example, is by defeating Bubbles and therefore clearing the sea way to Cantha. But that’s just me.
Also I’d rather see Isles of Janthir, Blood Legion Homelands and Giant’s Causeway before Cantha and Elona. :P In other words I agree with Rin.
How about… the rest of Tyria gets unveiled through Living World (like now, but hopefully with more improvements along the way… we need improvements).
And new continents like Elona and Cantha (and others?) through expansions.
I still refuse to accept Living World as a replacement or in any way on par with an expansion, thats not saying I dislike the Living Story entirely, but it is just not expansion like. Would love to have both proper expansions/campaigns for me to buy. I don’t mind waiting a long time for something like the campaigns of GW1.
There really is 1 thing that still makes me dislike Living Story… and that is that it seems that it is meant to replace expansion/campaigns and it just cannot do that. If I my hopes and dreams for the game were true, we would have both. Living Story as it is now inbetween expansion/campaigns (maybe with some improvements), making even a long wait (2 years? XD) acceptable.
Cantha won’t be here (for a while) at the very least they wanted to go deeper into the Shiverpeaks, so we won’t see Cantha until after the Jormag Krieg
Get ready to get merged.

Asians will get offended <- Bogus argument. We had an Asian themed festival earlier this year. Stereotypes are fine to be made. Offensive ones, don’t. And really. You have to be realistic on what you’re doing. If you do some guy with a heavy Chinese accent that makes numerous grammatical errors in his speech, that’s kinda rude because you’re picking at a bad trait that people overall have (and a stereotype that’s negative and people often make fun of).
Honestly as long as they do reasonable research into the culture they’re after I don’t think they’ll legitimately offend anyone, save for the people who get offended by the slightest things. And given they just released in China, I’d say theyd be able to amply research the region to get a good and accurate idea.
Personally I’d drool allover a set of Chinese Fire Lance styled skins for ballistas and rifles. With modified sound effects too. And Hwacha Arrowcarts.
And Katana sword skins, Japanese Yumi bow skins, and more really.
There’s a lot of ways they can go with this, again, if they do their research. Heck, give us bonsais for our Housing :v
I wonder if China took it as a personal offense when Anet then decided “Well we might as well blow up the other asian remnants. Literally.”
already I feel sorry for the developers did not respond to us in connection with Cantha (situation report) .

It’s not about offending the Asians, per se. It’s about staying on the good side of the governments that could ban your game from being played in their country. Remember, Factions ran into that issue. It’s why the panda bears were removed from Shing Jea Island (in China it’s illegal to depict harm / killing a panda). If they launch something that those in charge find offensive, they could strip the game from the market, which would be severely detrimental to their budget.

According to ANet, the pet was removed because China did not allow depictions of a dead member of an endangered species

Make them passive green animals (there are plenty of those)
other than that, I thin kthe whole asia might get offended issue a bit out of proportion

There was a bit more too it than that, considering even the passive non-targetable animals could be killed in GW1 (pbaoe and cows anyone?)
Still, it was simply an example to highlight that making games compatible with other countries can sometimes be….tricky. Just look at how much they tweaked, changed, and overhauled GW2 for the China market…
I see in the air we will get in this year something info From Cantha
Other than the sporadic NPC, the only new Cantha thing it seems we’re getting is Belinda’s Greatsword.
I hope we will have some kind of expansion to cantha or elona after we´ve dealt with modremoth. I´d gladly pay for a big expansion to one of those two places
I mean we might need allies to fight the dragons one day, have Trahearne be like “We´re running outta soldiers here. Go there and convince them to help us, because we all have to work together or the elder dragons will take each nation down one by one” a la Mass Effect 3. Just a thought. I mean he also said in one of the new releases that they´ve lost a lot of pact soldiers in the fight against Zhaitan, so that might be a problem later on?
I still hoping for an expansion set for GW2.
And more stuff of ’Cantha’ aka chinese stuff is coming in to the game!
Belinda’s Greatsword, Dragon Outfit, etc. etc..!
If there’s one thing I want from ArenaNet it’s to see Cantha either in the living story season 3 or something or through an expansion… Com’n ArenaNet! Listen to the fans!! haha

We haven’t even finished Tyria, and Cantha would be another (possible) battle on our plate since their emperor is xenophobic.
We don’t know if the Emperor is, or isn’t Xenophobic because it’s been hundreds of years. Who knows what the current Monarch thinks, perhaps all these little Canthan inspired things popping up are a sign that the current Emperor/Empress is keen on opening Cantha up to the rest of the world again.

What gave you the impression Usoku died after two-hundred years.
But why on earth would NCSoft, a Korean company, want to get rid of Asian elements?
Kind of… doesn’t make sense in my head. Maybe from an investor point of few, but it’s not like Asian themes turn many people off. (inb4 korean grind/anime joke)
It is because NCSoft doesn’t want to make any mistakes in rolling out Cantha. It is possible that because of some mistake made accidentally, they may come across as culturally blind or insensitive. As in assuming that Korean culture encompasses ALL of Asia for example?
Another is assuming that " asian" is one homogeneous experience or culture. When In fact it encompasses many, that by accident all happen to be in the same general area…and to many western eyes appears to be homogeneous. ( example: Japanese hate being confused for Koreans even though racially they are pretty much indistinct, but…culturally…. they are miles apart.) When you say " asian" elements, are you saying Chinese? Japanese? Korean? maybe elements from Singapore? or maybe Okinawa? How about Malaysian…or Russian? ( yes most of Russia is in Asia, although they consider themselves European. Amazing) There is no such thing as a homogeneous " Asian" element. Only " asian" in the eyes of westerners. And this is why NCSoft, a Korean company refused to even risk offending the Chinese with a release of Cantha.
Cantha was seen as China. And NCSoft is releasing Gw2 in China, seems perfectly reasonable to me from a financial stand-point.
Better to totally eliminate Cantha and therefore not have cultural ignorance cause what may be perceived as cultural insensitivity, than to run the risk of lost sales in the Huge Chinese Market.
Edit: For those that try to say that " Russians are Europeans. " That is a cultural distinction, Not a geographical one, since…. Geographically Europe is Just a peninsula that projects out of the Asian continent. Europe is not a continent, only Euro-centric map makers call it one. Technically ALL Europeans are likewise Asians.
The problem is, westerners will talk about cultural distinctions about Europeans, but then geographical ones about " Asians". That is why NCSoft decided Not to risk Cantha, and simply said " Just say it sank..and died."

It’s been 200 years. Lol. Anything could of happened in that time, Cantha may be completely razed for that matter, or it could be doing perfectly well, or stayed just about the same. Who knows. It’s a perfect opportunity for ArenaNet either way even though I’m hoping it’s stayed relatively the same in some aspects. Like I don’t want it to lose it’s oriental theme or anything, and I would still love for Kaineng to be there as this gigantic sprawling Metropolis.
Dear Arenanet! Please listen this " https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8JULmUlGDA "
and make that expansion!

“Anything could’ve happened”. Usoku may be well over two-hundred years old, loyal officials claiming that through sheer patriotism he will not perish until Cantha has been stripped and healed of evil. He’ll not suffer interlopers from Tyria disrupting his fragile hold on whatever secret power sustains him.
Maybe we’ll (in-game characters) start discussing going there after Mordremoth is put down and the rest of Tyria is explored (Orr cleansing a plus?).

I would love to see Orr cleansed, we started the process about 2 years ago in the time-line, so it would be neat for them to periodically update parts of the maps into being cleansed. I know it’s probably unlikely to happen like that, at least without a living story bringing us there for it…But either way it would be epic to see our efforts there brought to fruition and eventually for Orr to be given a new purpose after the cleansing is complete.
As for Cantha and the Emperor, I could see a really interesting political intrigue story-line there when/if we get there!
It is understandable that some people are more sensitive culturally speaking. As a European, I don’t care seeing various elements of different cultures mixed.
However, for Cantha, there could be a little trick to avoid mixing… How about “zoning”? I mean, Shing Jea could be (let’s say) heavily Korean-oriented, while most are around Kaineng could be Chinese-inspired, down south we could find some kind of jungle with Cambodgian-like temples, and some city around the Jade Sea could be Japanese-influenced…
There are millions of ways to avoid hurting people, even though as we say it’s just a game and any resemblance with real-life elements is purely fortuitous.
As people said on this topic, if they really wanted to avoid Cantha, they could create a story where bubbles wiped the continent. We would curse but still, that’s how it is. Because it was given a background story, and since most people are eager to go back there (I’m part of them, I really liked Shing Jea for example), I assume they will somehow make us go back there (after all, the Zephyrites and Marjory are standard-bearers of the land).
I won’t say I’m positinve nor negative about the future of Cantha. If they release it, I will praise the devs’ names! If they don’t, I will be sad and disappointed, but if it’s for the greater good (like a new continent? The planet is huge) I could accept it… wirth a heartache.
I mean… Even a big part of the gw2 staff (as Josh Foreman said) would like to see Cantha back again. I don’t know if we can do anything to change ArenaNet mind about the game but maybe… I don’t know maybe some kind of petition signed by a large number of players loving Cantha and hoping to have it back would work.
