The Cantha Thread [Merged]
Imo revenant sneak peak looks like reimagined assassin/ritualist classes from gw1 factions (cantha). If those 2 arnt being saved for cantha…could spell doom for that continent ;-(
However, I suppose if they are saving tengu, there is some hope ;-)
I believe Revenant is more of a dark Dervish but with Ritualist elements mixed in similar to how Necro also has Rit elements.
I predicted in my Reaper class thread that we will go to Elona.
Watch and be amazed.
Rytlock getting lost into the Mist awhile ago and playing a major role in the expansion was a dead giveaway that we heading towards Elona direction especially with the new class being undead/demon themed. Elona is undead controlled now, keep that in mind as well..
Lolwhat? Nothing dervish about them seen so far.
So what happens to Sea Dragon?
Will it somehow swim to Tyria completely invalidating the “no contact” thing?
The Deep Sea dragon will probably be the last one. Probably getting largos as a new “allied race” instead as a playable one, in underwater maps with lot of bioluminiscent plants, rocks and creatures.
But before that can be even on the table, they need to greatly improve underwater combat. Would that even happen in the first place?
For now, I’ll be happy if more Canthan refugees than the few usual ones washed on the shores of Kryta and the Tarnished Coast, and that new influx brought with themselves some stories from Cantha, and started building makeshift homes in LA and DR, Old Kaineng style, with labyrinthine slums that can be used for jumping puzzles. A bunch of them in the Easter Commons around The Dead End, a bunch of them on the side of the mountain from Canal Ward waypoint to Crow’s Nest Tavern.

They are a class that channels ‘legendary powers’ , namely the powers of beings from history. The Dervishes channeled the powers of the gods. We see the revenant using ascension runes as a design on their blindfolds and on their skill effects, so there is clearly a bit of throwing back to the dervish in there…
I for one believe that Cantha – or other Asian-themed content (maybe Dominion of Winds, which is… well… right in the middle of our known world now, isn’kitten is in the works.
There are so many themes outfits and items in the (gem) store:
- outfits: Hexed, Ancestral, Shadow Assassin
- weapons: Belinda’s Sword, Jade Weapons
- minipets, potions: Monkey King, lantern
- other: Marjory’s hairstyle
We get Cantha mentioned, we see parts of thereof (mostly jade sea)…
All there, all taunting us…

You forget armor sets/skins:
The two new gem store armor sets: zodiac and ceremonial, and the 3 lv 400 crafted exotic sets: Exalted, Emblazoned and Draconic.
Also weapons: there is a Sai looking dagger Usoku’s Needle. And the jade set. You also have the zodiac set of weapons. Entropy and Genesis hammers have the Canthan symbol for warrior.
For trinkets back items and rings and amulets: there are a lot of Canthan themed stuff and related to GW 1 Canthan lore for ascended.
Elona has far less references and gear themed to it as far as I know.
Also BTW: THERE IS A POST YOUR CANTHAN TOON THREAD I MADE WHICH FELL BACK TO PAGE 4 OR 5 ON THIS GENERAL SECTION. SHOW YOUR SUPPORT WITH YOUR GW 2 CANTHANS/CANTHAN DESCENT HUMANS!
DON’T LET IT DIE!

Thank you for at least something with the canthan new year

“Channeling” (a Ritualist attribute) beings from history (i.e. ancestral spirits) is exactly what Ritualists did. The blindfolds are also obvious references to Ritualists, who were blind and wore covers over their eyes. The Dervishes have no special connection to ascension, you could even argue they have the least relevance since the Nightfall campaign did not feature any kind of ascension rites, whereas both Prophecies and Factions did.
Thank you very much Arenanet!
This small Cantha to us! We want see more:)
Yeah it looks awesome, would be great to visit Jade Sea again, or Echovald Forest…
do you think we wont see Cantha until they solve the underwater problem? because with all the gem store stuff happening, though a lot of it is china only, at least it is like not unnoticed
Considering the Jade Sea must have turned back into water after Abaddon was defeated, it may be the case.
Not getting o deal with the deep sea dragon and Cantha until underwater combat is finally improved.
after this year of the ram event, i have my hopes for cantha restored a little bit ^^
Sorry a little late to the game here but I’ve just been catching up on the lore of this game and I feel like as someone who was born in Seoul, South Korea I would actually be offended if something that like Cantha was just swept under the rug and brushed aside pretending that it really never existed. I think you should make this intricate part of the lore an actual part of the game. I know that whenever a game pays homage to Asian culture we actually really like it, makes us proud that our culture and heritage is so influential that it could be brought into something so big and mainstream.
Considering that expansions are now on the table for you with the announcement of HoT, Arenanet, this is now your chance to re-look at a Canthan Expansion and earn my 60$.
Cantha will forever be in my heart.

Waiting the day when this thread gets a merge with the expansion one.
Happy new year!I think they are separate topics and can stand alone. Thanks for the suggestions, though. And Happy New Year to you, as well!
haha, I think you missed his point. XDDD When he said he’s waiting for the two threads to merge, he meant he’s waiting for Cantha to be the next expansion. Haha, you’re a very literal person, aren’t you Gaile? ;P
I personally have played Guild Wars since Prophecies, the first Christmas event actually was when I started. I remember when Factions was announced and it looked awesome, but I also enjoy Asian culture very much so it was no surprise. And man, when I got in the game with Factions, I was not disappointed. Loved my Ritualist too. All things aside though, let me get to my main point of posting.
A lot of people say that a return to Cantha would not make sense, and they are right. As of right now, we have no reason to go there, but that’s only because the reason is not perceived. A great deal of things could be happening there, who knows, we certainly don’t. This is all to say that there is nothing stopping Anet into making a reason to go there.
Now, I don’t see us going there in the near future, a return to Elona seems more likely, due to if the ED in the desert falls, then now we may have a certain Palawa Joko and his army to deal with, who is right at our doorstep so to speak.
One last thing, though many people say that they want new areas and stuff, not old areas. That is true, but we go to old places already in the game, and will continue to go to old places. For instance, we see ToA and well, it has seen better days. There are places all over the map that are “old” but are so very different that they are new. If the areas in Tyria are so different, then why automatically assume that GW2 Cantha and Elona will be the exact same? And as for future “old” areas, the Shiverpeaks and Desert expansion will easily have old areas, but again, literally two and a half centuries have passed. Things will be so different it is new.
Would have loved to see Cantha back as well as Istan (what happened there as well?). Played Prophesies and all the expansions way back in the day and loved it. Gwen was a brilliant expansion. I remember running up with guildies and just standing around a camp fire marveling at the flames. The story line was compelling in fitting with the rest of games.
Like everyone else I was looking forward to GW2 with practically unashamed fan-boy enthusiasm (my days of being a boy, or indeed a young man being a long distant memory!) and rushed out and bought it.
However, since playing GW2 as enjoyable as it undoubtedly is, doubts keep rising over the direction the entire game is taking.
No Races—er why, GW1 was all about that. We had no time, really? Find that one particularly hard to believe, unless they mean ‘We really didnt care and gave it minimal resources knowing it would fail.’
I cant help feeling that the devs who started out in GW2 decided, ‘Hey, this is GW2 not GW1, we will do things our way, not the old way’, and condemned themselves to make new mistakes instead of re-enforcing the success of the previous game. This was particularly evident when the metrics came out. No master piece was ever created with the use of metrics! The original creators of GW1 had a vision and were brave enough to see that vision through. If it was left to metrics, GW1 would never have been born!
(edited by Shadey Dancer.2907)
I also want to see Istan and Elona, I hope we get more of the original lore incorporated into the game via living world + expansions in the future.
Cantha will always be at the top of my list though.
Guys, there’s plenty of reasons to go to Cantha. It’s not just for humans. I remember reading somewhere that there were actually Charr in Cantha, that were starving or something. And those Wardens of Echovald could easily have come from a Mordy related champion like the Tree. The Asura lived underground, and if you recall, there was a spot in Kaineng that linked up with the other sinkholes in the other big cities. There’s plenty there for the Asura to rediscover.
As for the Norn, I can’t think of any race-specific reason to go south, but they’re Norn! Norn love adventure. Exploring an ancient continent full of legendary and dangerous creatures sounds right up their ally. They could even toss in something to do with the spirits.
Elona would have been the next logical place to go geographically, however, it’s basically an undead zone now, and is blocked by Kralky, and presumably Bubbles. Plus, I seriously doubt anything there would help us learn about the dragons. Cantha however, besides being constantly dangled in front of our faces on the gem store, has Always had dragon symbolism. What better place to learn about them than the Dragon Empire? It’s so obvious. Plus, Orr isn’t blocking the way anymore.
Considering all the canthan themed stuff we keep seeing, plus the inherent story potential, my moneys on cantha. Assuming of course, that we leave Tyria. I really hope we leave Tyria. I never liked it in Prophecies. Nowhere near as interesting as a sea of jade and a forest of amber.

I thought the same as Gaile, nothing wrong being literal
Maybe there is a magical portal somewhere in HoT that takes us to Cantha.
Happy to see this thread still going strong!

I think it’ll stay that way for a while. I think most players want to go back to Cantha, and I’m hoping that since the expansion brings us to Maguuma, our next expansion will take us south across the sea to Cantha, and we will go full circle all the way until we reach Isles of Janthir north of Kryta.

I don’t think they will, they kinda hinted that the pact where going to the crystal desert before Mordi showed up. So they’ll probably head that way. Then have to deal with Joko, then we’ll have Elona’s help to fight Jormag. Then we can head to Cantha from Istan, fight bubbles before fighting Primordius.

And by then I’ll be 65 years old if not dead in real life!
One expansion every 2 years could mean most of us are retired claiming our old age pension by the time Cantha comes out. Arthritis will mean none of us can click a mouse.
So I’d suggest forgetting about Cantha in this life and hope in your next life you get to experience it’s riches :-)
To those of us who played GW1, Cantha was a big part of our experience, if not the highlight. I for one really want to go back there and enjoy the scenery and background music again.

I would be very excited to go back to Elona as well so I wouldn’t be too disappointed with that, but still…Cantha was a real big staple for me with the first game.
I loved Cantha, but there are REAL social (and now economic) concerns here that will prevent it from happening. I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that part of the “agreement” with being able to do a Chinese game included NOT doing any Canthan content (that is potentially offensive to some oriental cultures).
Not gonna happen (and I’m not happy to say that at all).

I really miss cantha. Factions was my favorite of the GW1 games by far. The Luxon side more so. Alliance Battles and fort aspenwood need brought back.

Agreement with whom?
I have a hard time believing Anet would give up Cantha in exchange for release in China. If anything a good representation of east asian culture would make Cantha very attractive to Chinese players, in the same way that I as a Swede enjoy Norns, despite not drinking alcohol.

Yeah, they’ve included more “Canthan” themed things for China’s release actually. The rumour I think they are referring to is about NCSoft & ArenaNet not coming to an agreement on having a uniform design for Canthan areas or content because Cantha was a combination of different oriental cultures and they didn’t think that would go over very well with the Korean audience. It’s a controversial subject, because many Asian players have been requesting Canthan content right along side everybody else so it’s possible that either NCsoft had ulterior motives behind that situation, or that it didn’t really happen at all.
My wife is Chinese so everything should be good to go. ~thumbs up~

We will be lucky if this ever happens at this point.
Hi!, I’ve been playing Guild Wars 2 since a month (or two) ago and i’m more into the lore/story and exploration than anything else.
So i’ve been doing my own research as just playing the game didn’t tell me much and i came across lore from gw1! Here i found that there existed an asian themed continent called Cantha down south from Tyria.
I’ve looked at different screenshots and art of Cantha and it was so captivating i actually wanted to leave gw2 and start gw1 (which is obviously impossible). IMO Cantha added to the diversity of the environment of gw and as an asian myself, i think i could really have enjoyed exploring Cantha if it was a part of gw2. Is there a possibility that GW2 would re-introduce Cantha to the world? I’ve been told that Cantha wasn’t added to GW2 because of some sort of ridiculous reason… Why exactly did they get rid of Cantha?
For tldr; Cantha seems awesome and wondering what are the possibilities of bringing back Cantha and why did they get rid of it in the first place?
You can still Play Guild Wars 1, its in full auto mode, but with Heros and henchmen, the content is very doable.
in so far as the post https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/The-Cantha-Thread-Merged/page/52#post5059722 join the crowd.
BUMP! A new player and i TOTALLY missed out on gw1 and the continent of Cantha!!!! I know it can’t be helped… if getting rid of asian themes was really the best for the world of Tyria. But i’d be upset if the reason why they did get rid of Cantha was so that it would make the living world more “universal”. I can’t seem to find any evidence for this statement but anywho…. BRING BACK CANTHA ><
Thank you! I’ll look into Gw1 to catchup with all the lore and gameplay i’ve missed >< The forum post was an interesting read! but i’m a little upset that they got rid of the asian themed Cantha to keep the living world of Tyria more “universal”. Of course the OP didn’t state the source nor was there evidence, but as an Asian myself that kind of got me where it hurt T^T haha anywho thank you for linking me
Yep, alot of us were. Which is why this thread had been running for as long as it has been. I still bump it now and then, in hopes someone at anet might take pity on us and respond, but by this point I am not holding my breath any more.
To be fair, they’ve responded a few times and even talked a little about it in developer chats, but nothing concrete on the issue. I think it’s important to keep this discussion going for both veteran and new players of both games. Even if we don’t get Cantha in GW2, perhaps it will change things for the next installment of the franchise (GW3) etc.
Being a little opportunistic here. The following link takes you to a GW fanfiction I am currently writing. Cantha is featured as a major player against Kryta and other nations/factions in a distant future in it so I believe you guys might be interested
As always, I hope ArenaNet can provide further and more direct responses on this topic. Thanks.

Oh I know they have responded. But that hasn’t been for a while. And this is one of the longest running threads on the forums. Surprised it hasn’t just been locked.

I’m hoping it’s because secretly the mods want to return to Cantha too. In the meantime, let’s not give them any ideas about locking this beautiful thread.

Please vote for the Phoenix Roost name for the new lighthouse on rebuilding LA so we have a bit more Canthan themed locations in GW 2! I’m sick of not having anything of my favorite culture of GW 2 being non existent except for a few events and items.
I prefer Elona :|
