@Lady Vireo

Well said! I agree with your post and can’t emphasise enough how much I would love to see Cantha make a return. Imagine that Jade sea being explorable now? The potential new creatures that could be brought in as well as new titles/skills or even professions. With little Luxon islands you can explore or tree houses? Anyone remember the giant rat that would run on a wheel and it would take you to another part of the Kurzick forest? Would be amazing to see all this and see the changes.. Even if you’re not a fan of Cantha that’s OK not everyone has to be a fan of it. Just as Lady Vireo has said.

This is simply absurd, Cantha plays a major role in the Guild Wars Universe, and a large part of the player base feel a connection with the continent. How could releasing Cantha be anything but profitable.

“ArenaNet isn’t going to develop a traditional expansion for Guild Wars 2 any time soon. “Expansions are definitely something that we’ll potentially look at in the future,” game director Colin Johanson told IGN. “We don’t have a timetable on it. We’re open to it, but I think our major focus as a studio is making the living world concept as strong as we possibly can for the players that we’ve got.”

Yeah, but he also said they’re working on other updates as well and considering Southsun was a new region in an update that will also have lot’s going on in the relatively near future, it’s not too far fetched to imagine we could get at least some Canthan content in a free update. In some ways it is actually exciting that they haven’t begun official production on a paid expansion yet, because that leaves open the possibility Cantha could come sooner than later in the expansion timetable when they do have one. Also, they could end up working on stuff that amounts to a paid expansion organically, some of that could be content they’re already working on! Who knows? That’s part of why it’s so exciting

Their goal seems to be to funnel in updates the way they currently do, gradually building and evolving the world steadily rather than in a big giant expansion. Ultimately there could be very little difference between having expansions, and not having expansions other than we get content each month that builds and opens the world up more, instead of waiting 6 months for one big update we pay for.

I’ll be pretty upset if they don’t put Cantha in. Why put all these hints of Cantha and not put Cantha in? I want to know what’s going on over there kitten it!

Cantha has to happen and if we demand it, maybe that will put some pressure on them to make it happen.

I would like to see Cantha in GW2, but it doesn’t have to be inspired by Asian countries.
For example, Kryta was inspired by Greece in the original GW, but over the past 250 years the culture has changed, and I really see no problem with that.

Cantha would be a great addition to the GW2, but with 250 years between the games, and with Elder Dragons on the loose, it could be that their culture has changed (or was destroyed and rebuilt) and it looks more “universal” now.

It doesn’t need to be hints. Just reminders of the region. But Anet seems to like leave options open for themself which they can work on in the future.

As regarding Cantha I do think they’ll put it in the game. I think NCsoft’s making a bad picture of themself if they would forbid an entire region for a number one selling game 2012. They are the publisher and not developers and their role regarding Gw2 is marketing. I wouldn’t be THAT much concerned that Cantha won’t be in the game. However what I am concerned about is how much NCsoft is going to destroy it by making Anet do huge changes that lore won’t do much of a help. ‘’The Great Collapse’’ is a joke and makes me angry at NC so yet again. The region will most likely come. But as for the moment we can just spectaculate about how it will be.

Great point, Shanna. There are so many exciting possibilities for how Anet can deliver content for us. I love the organic, immersive approach they’re taking. Just imagine a Canthan living story! Canthan artifacts begin washing up on shore in Lion’s Arch as teaser content…fans hit the forums to try and decipher the meaning behind them! As Anet rolls out more updates, new NPCs appear to recruit players for an upcoming voyage of exploration. Before you know it, a fleet is heading for Cantha with groups of players aboard, and a new map opens up….

Psyt, you might want to check out the dev posts in this thread if you haven’t already. Josh Foreman said the team does want to work on Cantha again eventually. As he put it, it is “worth asking for” and I would add to that, “worth waiting for” however Anet chooses to pull this off. My excitement for it sure isn’t going to wear off in the mean time!

I know. I was already not fond of NC Soft. This news just makes me bloody hate them. Seriously, I wish Anet could totally break free from them completely. I think I’ll definitely be boycotting any NCSoft games (not GW2 of course but I don’t consider it an NCSoft game, it’s Anet that’s really behind it) in the future.

That would be cool, or they could wash up on Southsun Cove since it is central between a bunch of the other “old world” regions as well and closer than Lions Arch, and it sounds like we will be doing a lot of cool stuff there during this current living-story cycle for the refugees and such. The wiki says Canthan’s sometimes come ashore in the Tarnished coast, Southsun is close as well so maybe they will dock there instead?)

The only reason I ever even played Guild Wars 1 was because of the Factions Campaign. That was the first installment I purchased and played. I did so because for the most part Echovold Forest, The Jade sea, Shing Jea Island, As well as some other portions of the mainland were so aesthetically pleasing. the lore of the Luxon and Kurzick factions were fascinating. as well as numerous other things. However as many say the actual mainland cities such as Kaineng City were less appealing. However there was a reason for it. it was in the lore. It was how the mainland was being affected by the plague as well as poverty. All in all though I enjoyed far more than I enjoyed Prophecies, Nightfall, or EotN. Nightfall however was my second favourite campaign. Both this lands and their cultures, lore, and society added to a more appealing sense of realism and completion to Guild Wars. It made it feel diverse and more like an epic of a story rather than something bland and closed off from a true worldly sensation.

I would love to be able to see how the land of Cantha has adapted to time and the awakening of the dragons. I see some people talking about how dis-pleasing the Canthan cities and areas looked on the main land. but that was in that time frame. just as Lions Arch has changed, I imagine that so to did the cities and populous of Cantha. Maybe for the better in terms of appealing aesthetics. or maybe even for the worst. However all things considered. I imagine that the Canthan populous is now more than Tengu and Humans. I imagine that throughout those many years before Cantha cut off travel and communication from Kryta and others; that there had been Charr, and Asurans who migrated there. and perhaps even now despite closed borders a curious adventurer or explorer or two has made journey to those shores and found a way in. As far as the Sylvari, given their nature and how they came to be. in terms of lore I find it hard to believe that Kryta was the only land they awoke in. It seems to exclusive to be true. So I at which point imagine that Elona and Cantha also have them as residents. I had actually found a book in Divinity’s Reach the other day that told some lore on the Dragons. and honestly one of the Dragons whose name eludes me right now seemed likely to be the true cause for “The Jade Wind” that some Luxons in Guild Wars 1 spoke of. with all of the possibilities these lands hold for the future of Guild Wars 2 I highly anticipate their return. I am hopeful at the least. As some of the rest of us had said, it would be a waste to let those two great lands wither away from the compendium of lore in Guild Wars.

Creativity is my weapon of choice my good sir.

The Great Collapse page the trivia says
“This area was originally a completed Canthan district and included a blend of Asian architectures. However, this mix of styles received negative feedback from China and Korea, since those gaming markets traditionally prefer a uniform design. Due to time constraints the district was replaced by the Great Collapse.” Keep this in mind, this was like the Panda ranger pet when factions came out, apdnas could not be portraited as a thing that could come to harm. And Now there Pandas.

And there was also something ingame, about the representantion of “human remains” that skips my mind now but it was changed, can’t remember what it was exactly, it was either a visual issue in the game, a npc rendering or skill icon I can’t remember. But the issue was about the impossibility to represent human remains like human bones.

This is just to point out many things happened, before, but in the end there was a solution.

I don’t see that interpretation at all unfortunately. They wont be creating new art assets and adding free Cantha zones peice by peice that would take a lot of resources and I don’t think it would get the attention it deserves doing it that way either. Most likely what they mean is exactly what they mean in that they are just focusing on Tyria right now. I am for a Cantha expansion but unless they are secretly working behind the scenes on it to avoid player timelines I don’t think its coming anytime soon. Its unfortunate though because Cantha was my favorite part of GW1.

Why don’t they just stick with one culture and move on from there then? If the problem was the mixing it seems they could of just yanked or modified some buildings.

@psyt

They’ve been saying it from before the game ever came out, though that the free update model was going to be their primary model for building on the game world, they did it with Southsun and Southsun is about to get a lot of attention soon, so I don’t get why they’d do it once and then never again? It’s good that they’re focusing on the current regions right now in my opinion because it’s needed, but we don’t know how long that will go on. He never said they weren’t working on other places either, though. I definitely don’t think a place like Cantha will come from a free update, it’s too big. But I could see singular zones opening up in them. Cascade Woodlands, Isles of Janthir, Tarnished coast, etc are all singular areas that don’t seem to be very big that they could do in the free updates.

As far as Cantha and free updates are concerned, though they could start it off in the living-story/free updates, even if they go on for a long-ish time. They could also have the Canthan district in Divinity’s Reach released in a free update with a rebuilding effort, a precurser to a Cantha expansion, or Tarnished Coast update. They say Canthan’s are beached on the Tarnished coast and they could also come up in South Sun and that would at least bring pieces of the Canthan culture into the game. Those people would need homes, too just like these refugees

And I agree with you, they could stick with one culture if they had to if it meant the difference between doing Cantha or not doing it. I don’t think anyone would complain with that. Make it uniformally Chinese, Korean, Japanese, whatever.

It’s not that it’s hard to do, it’s that they don’t want to do it (for whatever reason). They destroyed a finished, functional Canthan district in Divinity’s Reach; I’m guessing the same driving force behind that decision is the same driving the decision to abandon Cantha altogether.

Actually we have dev feedback on these very points.

First, they have not abandoned Cantha altogether!

They do want to do it (if you mean the devs), they said so in this thread.

Josh Foreman explained in an interview that the Canthan district was destroyed only because NCSoft (based on feedback from Asian audiences) said it could not stay as it was—so close to deadline apparently that Anet had no time to make changes, only take it out completely.

So the “driving force” appears to be this negative feedback from Asia about mixing different influences and architectural styles, a “cultural consideration” as Josh called it, but again, this is an issue that could be solved through design changes or might not be a problem in future. It does not mean Cantha has been ruled out.

^This.

As I’ve said before I wouldn’t be against a more uniformally (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc) aesthetic if it meant getting Cantha into the game. I can’t say on behalf of anyone else but my general feeling is that I don’t THINK too many people would be against that, either. I mean of course it would be really sad that they have to worry about being politically correct, but looking at it from the other perspective I can understand why it simply doesn’t make sense to the audience over there. It might not be a matter of offense, and more a matter of “I don’t even know what that’s supposed to be.” for them. One example I saw was about how there were a lot of Canthan NPC’s with a first name that was Japanese, and surname that was Korean, or something like that…I can see how that would just throw them off.

But yeah, Lady Vireo is right, the devs WANT to do Cantha and that’s why it’s important that we discuss it (positively, and constructively) one way or the other. Because either way you cut it, it’s at risk and they need to know it’s too important to the rest of us for them to leave it out

I’m aware of the reason given for the Collapse, I just don’t understand the reasoning behind it. I don’t understand the “it can’t stay as is” response to complaints about a mixing of differing architectural styles. Why can’t it?

I’m all for cultural sensitivity, but they destroyed something that was aesthetically pleasing and fitting to their own lore because a bunch of (forgive me is this comes across as insensitive) thin-skinned whiners? My response would have been a carefully worded, PR approved “get over it”.

I doubt European players would have complained about a mix architectural styles from Ancient Greece, Renaissance Italy, Medieval France, and Victorian England. And even if they had, I find it hard to believe ArenaNet would have responded with the knee-jerk response of sink-holing 1/7th of Divinity’s Reach.

I was just thinking this.

I live in America and am German and British by descent (well, many many generations have passed since my family lived in Europe, but you get my meaning). Currently, the overall human aesthetic is “European,” meaning I have to watch my German and British castles get mixed with French, Italian, and Arabic influences? Unacceptable! I won’t have it! You have to change the game! I have to see NPCs named Doern Velazquez, a mix of Spanish and German?! Heresy!

…I’m kidding of course. I don’t give two kittens what they do to my ancestral cultures, even though they have butchered each other for most of human history. The thought that these people don’t want to be associated with each other even in fiction does not bode well for world peace.

EDIT: I see the person two posts above me touched on my very point. Well played, tunnel vision.

But seriously, I agree with you. I was very much looking forward to visiting that sprawling fire-hazard of a city now that we’ve got an additional axis to play with. Imagine the jumping puzzles they could have stuck in that city.

And I very much wanted to revisit the Eschovald Forest and Jade Sea. The atmosphere of those places were my favorite part of Factions. But alas, it looks like they’ll never be anything more than just fond memory of another game. All because someone was somehow offended because a buildings of Japanese, Korean, and Chinese architecture were too close to one another. Silly. Just silly.

Not to be disrespectful, but the Asian community needs to have the stick surgically removed from their hinter regions if they dislike a composite of the Asian world, then they should realize we are not on Earth here. The “white-anglo-saxon” world is also not “culturally sensitive” or even minimally “historically correct” if compared to the history of the planet Earth, but it is correct in the world of Tyria and beyond.

You may not realize this, but the civil rights movement has never entered east asia. I’ve been there quite a few times, and they are very backwards about civil rights.

There has to be some sort of cultural compromise they can reach to make this work. Maybe they can redo it in buddhist style or base it on South East Asia and call it a day. Or perhaps countries like Thailand and Vietnam are also sticks in the mud when it comes to their architecture I don’t know.

If it’s the mix of Asian cultures that is the problem I find it to be slightly submerged in hypocrisy. Why? Because in Thailand they actually have what is commonly called “The Sanctuary of Truth” Which is built with influence from the majority of Asian cultures as an aesthetic mix. If a mixed structure can be built in the real world, then why not in Guild Wars?

The “white-anglo-saxon” world is also not “culturally sensitive” or even minimally “historically correct” if compared to the history of the planet Earth, but it is correct in the world of Tyria and beyond.

You may not realize this, but the civil rights movement has never entered east asia. I’ve been there quite a few times, and they are very backwards about civil rights.

Actually, the civil rights movement entered east asia a loooooooong time ago. It’s had it’s ups and downs (mostly downs, until more recently) but there have been a lot of efforts even in China to improve that aspect of their society quite recently. The working relationship between Asian and Western companies has improved dramatically over the last several years, as well. The whole Cantha issue was brought up years ago, before GW2 was much more than a concept, so things could have changed by now. The Canthan & Arts district in Divinity’s Reach came later on and doesn’t sound as serious lol.

Will be difficult to wait years for Cantha.
It should come soon and after it, we back to Tyria again.
If we go to Cantha only after saving Tyria from dragons would be a “problem”, people might feel tired of Tyria and it will be “deserted”. With the arrival of Cantha soon Tyria would still be much seized with Living Stories. Heroes of Cantha going to Tyria or citizens fleeing from some danger in Cantha, creating Living Stories on both continents.

At the same time I want to see it soon, we would have another advantage if delay… I think the graphics would be better and the story too, because they would learn from they mistakes in the case of stories… for the same reason i would like to see Jormag as the penultimate dragon (before Primordius). Far Shiverpeaks must have an impeccable graphic and Norns must have a hero who really act like a Norn and is legendary.

I grew up playing games like Street Fighter, Age of Empires and Age of Mytology and never seen any problems, quite the contrary, I learned mush about other cultures in positively way with these games. I respect all of them.

No matter when or how they introduce a new continent, it’s going to herald the (at least temporary) desertion of Tyria. People might jump back for dragon fights or scratch off “kill X enemies in Y region” daily achievements, but by and large everyone is going to be spending the vast majority of their time in whatever new zones are added.

Yes, because the cursed shore was a prime example of this

Prince Rurik and Lady Althea. Anyone else see the incompatibilty here?

I’d love to go back just to revisit alot of the places in Cantha. I’ve spent hundreds upon hundreds of hours in the Echovald solo farming Gothic Defenders and really liked the wardens.

I find this kind of concerning. So I guess the only way make the game “universal” is to have an European theme(I mean not entirely but I see architecture, clothing, and many armors being extremely European themed). Prime example about how society considers white culture the unnamed norm.

The thing I liked above all in Guild Wars 1 was the fact that, instead of using stereotypical fantasy content, ArenaNet added Factions and Nightfall. It was so new, so refreshing! The African culture in particular of course, but Factions had its own twist of Asian styled things…with the Stone Forest and the Jade Sea, not to mention the huge city. I mean, how many RPGs play in a city?

If anything, it was bold and innovative…and if NCsoft banned it for political reasons, that would make sense. They also forced gear threadmills and gated content on us.

It all makes sense now. Standard management tactics. People with not idea what they’re on about make all the wrong decisions. Happens all the time.

If they truly wanted Guild Wars 2 to become a succes, they’d stop interfering and let the ArenaNet crew do it’s job. All they should do, is collect the cash that would be generated.

But they’d rather be poor than admit they’re wrong.

If you can read this then it is proof that ArenaNet’s moderators just, kind and fair.

I would like to bury this topic in the ground after seeing this:

’’DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a highly creative and extremely passionate person to serve as a designer working on content being developed for Guild Wars 2 in China. The game designer will work closely with the design leads to ensure that the core vision, game content, and gameplay created is carried through the development of new content, features and live operation of Guild Wars 2.

PLUSES:

Familiarity with Chinese and Korean online games.’’

http://ch.tbe.taleo.net/CH05/ats/careers/requisition.jsp?org=NCSOFT&cws=1&rid=1354

We can take from this that the to be hired Game Designer will work on Guild Wars 2, we can also take from this that it’s a plus to be familiar with Asian online games.

Ofcourse this doesn’t say specifically that Guild Wars 2 would need a game designer for Asian themes in the game but if NCSoft would ask ArenaNet to stray away from it and keep it neutral. Why request specific for familiarity with Korean and Chinese online games? Also why would NCSoft ask such a thing of ArenaNet to keep it neutral? I don’t believe that they have power over that.

I would also like to note that it is inevitable that we travel to Cantha and Elona for that matter, it is a part of Guild Wars as much as Tyria is. It might take months or years before we go there but we will return because it would be silly to believe that developers haven’t thought of returning to other continents while working on the original ‘’Prophecies if you will’’ Guild Wars 2.

Ofcourse they are going to say we might do it, we haven’t really thought or talked about it much but that’s ofcourse the code of secrecy they must obey. Otherwise tomorrow we would read just about everywhere that an expansion of some sort is leaked or hinted by an ArenaNet employee.

Returning to other continents with the new game engine of Guild Wars 2, it would be of epic proportions to see the renewed Kaineng City, Jade Sea, Desolation and what have you. I know for certain that it was on everybody’s mind at ArenaNet when they saw Guild Wars 2 take shape and how epic those area’s would be.

I think this is a good sign too, but for a different reason. It almost seems to me that they are planning on making a version of GW2 specifically for China. That may mean that their version won’t include “offending” Canthan content, but maybe our version will? I don’t think their requirement for a designer familiar with Asian MMOs means that they are asking for one experienced with designing Asian THEMES… just that the designer knows what a typical Chinese or Korean grinder is supposed to be like.

Oh, I misread it… it was a PLUS, not a requirement to be familiar w Asian MMOs. That kind of feeds into my hunch though that they’re making a GW2 version just for China.

If I’m not mistaken, the Chinese government has in place strict regulations governing online gaming. Hiring someone familiar with these regulations would be sensible. I think you’re reading way too much into this.

I would love to believe that this was some sign that Cantha is going to happen, I think they just are hiring people to port the game and make it more palatable to the Asian MMO crowd. It’s a very different market from the Western mmo market.

They need to bring in Cantha though and I hope it’s not far off. I’m too curious about what’s up over there and I can wait to explore the areas to see what has changed.

Yeah I think it may just be people to port the game over for the Chinese market, which is a very strict one. This could allow them to do Cantha here, but do it entirely different for China, or leave it out for them entirely if it’s that much of an issue. So this could be very good news for us, or bad news. Either way, I don’t think it’s going to do much to bury this topic as much as we wish we could get definitive answers on Cantha, it’s important that we still continue to discuss it and ask for Cantha. We can add this to the discussion, though!
