$50 for the expansion is expected. Dunno what all the fuss is about.
It’s not JUST the $50… It’s $50 for the Expansion (without an additional character slot) and it includes the Core Game.
Thats the problem…. We already have the core game, we feel like we’re buying it twice and not getting anything to show for it.
Then your playing 50$ for the expansion and getting a free copy of a core game. Often you cant chose to not get a free thing in a bundle to drop the prices with out destroy the ideal of the bundle in the first places.
At this point most ppl who are complaining about this is more complaining that they are getting something for free.
Actually, they are not getting it for free. They will link it to their current account and the “free” core game will not exist. New players will be getting the core game for free.
Hold up
What?
Is that confirmed? I have a boyfriend that wants the game, while I already have the base game. I was thinking of getting it so that he could have the vanilla game while I get the expansion, but if that’s the case they’ve killed off a potential new player before it could even start.
That reflects my understanding. I’ve seen no indication that you can separate the core from the expansion in this purchase.

It’s not a good deal for veteran players. It’s awesome for new players, but it’s simply a lack of thought for veterans. Those of us who supported the game since launch deserve at least a character slot or a measly token mini or something.

Guild Wars: Factions, $50, Guild Wars: Nightfall, $50. No. Look at EVERY expansion for World of Warcraft then come back.
Factions: Separate Campaign, added an entire continent, 2 new professions, multiple skills and armor sets, $50. Nightfall: Separate Campaign, added an entire continent, 2 new professions, multiple skills and armor sets, $50 bucks. WoW expansions, generally pretty kitten big.
HoT: Expansion, adds one profession, multiple skills and armor sets. As far as we know, the only areas added in PVE will be just to the west of Silverwastes and south into Magus Falls. I won’t be super pessimistic and say “lol only three maps!”, but such a small area doesn’t seem worth standard expansion price to me. Perhaps if they added the Maguuma Wastes all the way up to the coast of Janthir Bay and east into the Woodland Cascades, the current price would be more palatable.
I can agree with that. My issue is everyone screaming like they didn’t see this coming. Anyone with an iota of common sense saw this coming a mile away.
We wanted to believe that Anet was different from other MMO developers. After all, that’s what their entire image revolves around.
But at the end of the day they need to make money, that’s the point everyone is forgetting. We pay no subscription fee, get free content regularly. This isn’t a Steam sale, this isn’t a DLC bundle for a game. This is an expansion. Everyone seems to have forgotten the days past when expansions were things. Remember venerable old Diablo II? I do. I bought the Lord of Destruction expansion when that came out. $60. Look at Diablo III, oh, they have expansions there don’t they? $40 currently, but only because we’re in the age of people expecting DLC this, DLC that, cheap, cheap, cheap, cheap, cheap. There’s more than the maps being added, people are ignoring that fact. There’s also allegedly more things to do.
Is it worth the $50? Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. If people aren’t happy with the price, then don’t pre-order. Let those of us willing to risk it do it. If it ends up being good, I’m sure people will hail it as the next great thing in Guild Wars 2, if not, well, anyone can do the math on that one.

FFXIV’s expansion seems like it’s going to have more content, for a lower price. But that has a subscription fee attached, so it can’t quite be compared.
However, I’d a bit leery of calling the living world content ‘free’ knowing what they did with Season 2.

From all the info given so far about the game, I personally don’t feel like it’s worth $50.
That and some of the decisions they’re making:
- Recent news of the difference between ascended and exotics becoming 5% instead of 10%. I never liked your decision in implementing it in the first place, increasing it further… ha… if that wound finally sealed up for me, you’ve managed to rip it open and spry extra bit of salt on it.
- Holding sales a of couple times, selling the game for ~$10 to attract a crowd. Then putting up kitten for the expansion with the core game for “free”… yeah… brilliant move (sarcasm). The only way you can escape this one is by saying, “Oh yeah we only did this for E3, here’s the expansion w/o the core game”, and even then… why not hold yet another sale having gw2 for $10 and the expansion for $20-$30. The way you’ve done it now is just sleazy, even if you later on release a core-less expansion bundles.
Feel free to infract/ban me, that will just nail the coffin of me not ever buying it.

You just lost any players that were planning to come back to the game for the expansion. There were so many people that had left the game and then got back on the hype train for the expansion and are immediately going to balk at the fact that they have to buy the game all over again. And then, you have the people that bought the game recently because they heard about the expansion and assumed that they would need the core game to experience the expansion, now they are faced with the idea that they are going to have to buy a game that they already paid for in the last couple month all over again…
Well said. this pretty much sums up the wide spread anger.
Except you don’t. The price of the expansion is 50$ — a price that is on par with any other high-end MMO expansion, and spot on what many people were speculating. What people can’t seem to under stand is that they included the base game FOR FREE so that new players don’t need to shell out $110 to play all the content that is available right now.
No one would be ‘outraged’ if the price was 50$ for the expansion without the ‘base game add-on’.
No one was outraged when they sold the base game on special weekends for exceedingly low prices. This is exactly the same.
Why do people feel the need to rage at something that doesn’t effect them in anyway??

This absolutely makes no sense to me that they are doing this. I have purchased EVERY collector edition from GW1 to GW2. Factions and Nightfall were STAND ALONE games and worthy of their price. Eye of the North was like $20 bucks and was a true expansion. They later bundled it with the hero edition for folks that wanted the original game.
This is just flat out greed on their part. They showed it the day they put priority on the gem store over fixing the bugs and correcting the WvW issues. If HoT was a standalone game like Nightfall and Factions then I would be in support of the price, but it is not.
I’ll catch it when it goes on sale at Christmas, like every other previous version of the game has done.

This arguing over $50 is pathetic, its a one time $50 you spend, and never have to again on this game. Half of the people complaining have spent easily over $100 on just gems, so why is $50 so unfair? They are charging people the same price as any other gaming company in this world today charges. Get over it, its $50. If that is too much money then either you don’t truly like this game enough to invest in it, or you should be making money instead of playing it.

Congratulations on buying the core game twice and congratulations on supporting idiocy and very bad marketing because Anet has just lost a lot of its loyal customers. You might be a snowflake but the rest of us have the sense not to purchase the core game twice and will wait for a better deal. And there will be a better deal eventually because when the Gemstore items stop being bought, when the sales from HoT aren’t as high as they expect. Watch the price drop like a falling brick.

So I think a lot of people are misunderstanding the reason why a lot of people are frustrated with HoT pricing. Many of us were ready and willing to pay $50 for the expansion, as it’s pretty standard for MMOs nowadays. However, the slap in the face was that the loyal players that have been the only reason that GW2 has been able to even make it far enough to release an expansion are being offered a package that gives them nothing over new players. In fact, it gives the new players more (as existing players won’t be able to redeem their base games included in the $50 standard version). Not even a character slot for existing players only to show gratitude for their loyalty. I understand the arguments against “whining,” like GW2 having no monthly fee, but being slapped in the face so bluntly by these expansion options feels so directly insulting. Keep in mind that we had absolutely no warning that this expansion pack would be offered including the base game, which I don’t think any MMO has done before. We were all expecting the traditional “buy the game buy the xpac” approach. And what about the players who bought the base game in preparation for buying HoT? I don’t know. I love this game, but can’t bring myself to pre-order due to this nagging feeling of disappointment. Just my two cents.

This is common in any retail business prices change all the time. Companies give special promotional prices to intise new customers get over it buy the expansion or don’t it’s your choice but I don’t think they have done a thing wrong here, you all need to get a grip on realty. I bet you get really exited when you go to buy something and you find out that it was cheaper because of some promo the store or company is having or you get something extra that no one else got before you, yes I think Anet could have worded this a little different like “includes core game for new players” than people would most likely be a little less upset.

most complaining assumed the 50$ cost was there because it included the base game, and that an expansion-only cost would be lower. they didn’t want to have to repurchase the base game to get the expansion.
now that we know that isn’t the case, the complaint is the fairly high 50$ price tag on a relatively small expansion that also won’t include a free character slot.

In general this was just a poor time to release this rediculously overpriced content. for $50 i could go buy like 10 games on the steam sale and get 10x the content.
1. Skyrim $9.99 (300 hours of content)
2. Boarderlands 2 $9.99 (31 hours of content)
3. Oblivion $9.99 (+200 hours of content)
so there is $30 and over 500 hours of content, i just saved you $20 and gave you 3 of the best games ever released!

To clarify: $50 is the price of the expansion. We included the core game as a free bonus to make it easier for new players to get into it.
Are you kidding me?! Some of us bought the collector’s edition for a good hefty buck. Your $50 includes no features like free slot or anything for the old players that already have the core game, forcing them to PAY MORE to get said benefit.
No matter how you look at it, people who have been buying the core game until now, including from stores like Gamestop and what not, are getting ripped off. People who own the game get NO benefit from the $50 purchase.
Which part of “those who already own the core game do not want the core game in the pack” is ANet failing to understand. Instead of doing that, you could as easily offer a free character slot instead to the people who already OWN the game.
This seems more aimed at new players, rather than those who already have the game. Thoroughly disappointed and disgusted after waiting so long for this.

This might be the craziest rip off anyone’s ever pulled in game releases. I mean the whole point of “expansion” is it adds to a product… yet they’re forcibly reselling the whole game and forcing a bundle price.
I don’t know what they were thinking at Anet but this just a tough blow to the gaming community that looked up to them, and would never think they could act so coldly to us.

But the most recent Guild Wars 1 expansion, Eye of the North, came with no new profession, no character slots and basically a handful of zones. The fact is, the other games were full games, and only Eye of the North was an expansion. This is, by and large, along the same format as Eye of the North.

I’m sorry, but when Bungie puts out a half built game and feeds the players the rest thru steeply priced dlc’s it’s wrong. But it seems ok to pay for a full game with a fraction of content compared to the core game with Guild Wars 2? And don’t forget in the core game how much of updates and expansive living stories we got. It’s no excuse to have HoT to be at such a high price. If you say that Blizzard’s expansions were just as much for a sub game, you forget the amount of content you got along with updates and that server’s on such a massive scale need income to keep them running. I love the game with the detail and amount of things to do, but if we’re just getting an area that’s the size of Caldeon Forest and Metrica combined with one new class for $50 then you’ll lose a chunk of your player base that already has shrunk.

Worst case, you have something free, but useless
Uhm, no, you will NOT have anything for free, unless you plan to play on a new account starting from level 1, you wont be able to make use of the free account, the ‘core’ game and the expansion come bundled together, as one account, so you either add it to your existing account which upgrades it to Heart of Thorns and you lose that free ‘core’ game, or you start a brand new account all together.
At least get it right if you are just going to blindly lash out everyone in such an immature way.
Did you fail to read his post? He said free but useless. It matches his example, he got Bioshock for free, but already owns it, so it’s useless.
Now if the core game came as a separate key, then you got something for free that isn’t useless. There’s a difference there.
I’m personally fine with the pricing. Would I like it cheaper or with one character slot? Of course I would, that would be better value for money. But the pricing is fine as it is too.
And to those comparing this to Heavensward, do remember that FFXIV is a subscription game. So you are paying the price of Heavensward and then you’re still paying a subscription.
This pricing is still a better deal than all other MMOs that I’m personally aware of.
For the people complaining about the size of the expansion. First how exactly are you measuring the size? For example if you think of it as “I only play WvW and I only play necromancer. Trait changes, one elite spec and borderland maps overhaul is not worth $50” you would probably be right. But if you look at it from the point of view of a person who plays all parts of the game, pve, wvw, spvp, crafting, belongs to a guild etc. Then you will see that the price is fine.
