Noooooo….Colin…..difficulty wise the expansion is only for the top notch players….players like me, players like me who are clutzes… will never get a chance at the Elite specs…I am seriously about to cry here.
I bought the expansion, I did the Betas, I fell in love with Reaper, and Berzserker, and scrapper….I, I, I have been farming Hero Points on all my 33 plus characters like a mad thing….I learned to Jump up to Vistas well enough to get Map Complete on one of my characters, and now…..now I am told that the door to the elites have been slammed shut in my face.
Look at my account and you will see all the work I have done. Look at my buying History, I have been a..what do you call it?..a whale? I have played almost every day for three years….
I, I, I am sorry I am old enough to your Grandma and have lousy coordination…Darn, I am crying now…seriously. I was looking forward to this so much……
Lisa.

Is this an attempt to force people into the Maguuma for hero points? If the elite spec costs are artificially bloated and the HoT hero points are artificially bloated to compensate, what other possible explanation is there beyond devaluing Central Tyrian content in favour of shoving people into HoT.
How little confidence do you have in your own product if you need to resort to measures like this and devaluing dungeons to get people to play your content? If you have good content then people will play it. You don’t need to artificially bloat out the values of new content to funnel people in if it’s good.
In one fell swoop you’ve either made world completion obsolete or mandatory depending on how many hero points are in HoT and that’s terrible. World completion, frankly, sucks. As such, people should be rewarded for doing it and people shouldn’t be forced to do it. This is completely obnoxious. At this rate I’ll maybe unlock an elite spec on one character, but there’s no way on Earth I’m doing it for all nine professions, let alone my spares.

Did you not read yesterday’s blog? You’ll be able to earn every single point in WvW by earning currency to buy random HP unlocks.
Have you been to WvW before?
It will take months and months after release for an average WvW player to grind that many hero points. Depending on RNG.

Not really a big deal, you can do them ALL in HoT if you want to, never have to do any tyria map completion. At 10 each that is only 40 hero challenges. Once you have the WP’s that will take 2-3 hours tops.

I like it this way. I was scared that it would be given to me with no need to do anything at all. Iv done my world completion so now i have something to look forwards to unlocking in 3 days. Plus by the looks of it it might end up being faster to unlock it in wvw

400 points. 100% world completion only gives half an elite spec. I wouldn’t be anywhere near as salty about this if I didn’t have to buy everything including stuff I didn’t want with the free 400 I get for hitting level 80.
Well, you can get all the Hero Points you need just in the Heart of Maguuma. Or mix and match. At least, it will be new a couple of times.
Good luck.

Unless I am mistaken just to unlock half of the training line, we need 212 hero points?
It’s 400 points total to unlock everything in an elite spec training line – I just can’t remember off hand how many points folks have currently if they have done all the existing ones, but it’s right around 200. The rest you’ll need to earn in jungle to unlock the deeper skills/traits/etc. in the training line.
You only need 60 hero points to begin using your elite spec, the points you spend after that continue to unlock more skills, traits, skins, etc.
Again, hero challenges are worth 10 points each in the jungle. So no you don’t need to go do 200-400 jungle challenges.
Thats way over the top and a really really bad idea. I dont want to do all that stuff for each character if I decide to switch race.
Then you should atleast make them account wide so I dont have to do that stuff with all my 5 necromancers.

Unlocking your elite spec is a training line in your training panel that costs hero points. You do need to have trained all the existing training lines before you’re allowed to put hero points into your elite spec.
If you’ve got all the hero points in the existing game you’ll have enough to train about half the elite specialization training line on launch day. The rest you’ll need to earn in the jungle or via the new system Tyler outlined yesterday from WvW. The number of points to fully train your elite spec is higher than other training lines – but hero challenges in the jungle are worth 10 points each, so it’s not actually as big as it appears.
Revenant hype just took a complete nose dive… There went half my weekend grinding hero points…

That is going to majorly slow down Revenants with their inability to have the base world skill points at launch and absolutely no access to swiftness without the Herald Elite specialization.
Guess I finally have a reason to use my speed boosters that have collected dust in my bank for 3 years.

Julischka, if you need help reaching any of the jungle HP please let me know (if you are NA). It sounds like you’ll only need 20 HP challenges in the jungle to get the rest of what you need after getting all the vanilla challenges done, and you bet I’ll be exploring my way to those 20 on multiple alts and be happy for some company. I can even get you Mumble information so we can chat our way along. Three of my alts in need are mesmers, even, so I can aid via portals when on them. (I’ve just turned 50 and don’t have super reflexes myself, so I empathize).
Solaxo, I might join you on Thursday depending on map choice (I have to check which of my alts are missing your planned maps). I have tabletop tomorrow evening, alas. Though I should be home by 10:30 eastern and might be able to join you at that point!

Does spending the very first point on the line give me the ability to wield the new weapon?
well, come on, you want everything handed on a silver plate? At least a bit of work to get there… :/
It’s a fair question, you know. He’s wanting to know where the trait that lets your character use the new weapon for the elite is located.
Even though the two characters I have at level 80 have 100% map completion and fully unlocked everything, I think requiring all of the traits and skills to be trained a bit harsh. Especially since they didn’t release that information with enough time for players to have plenty of time to correct that on any characters they wanted to get elite specs on.
I can somewhat see the reasoning. Hero Points are Hero Points and it would be hard to require jungle exploration for the elite if you didn’t have to have everything else trained. At least not without figuring out how to make an item or items to handle elite trait unlocking, if that would even be possible.
I personally would have just made it not require the jungle and not required all of the traits(/skills?) unlocked. Especially if I wasn’t planning on releasing that information. It coming out in a post that asked about it for the millionth time makes me believe that wasn’t information that they had planned on releasing before launch. They had to have seen all of the posts in this subforum and in the profession specific ones on the number of players who wanted to use the elite specs on day 1. And yet kept silent on needing to max out the non-elite specs to be able to unlock the elite.
I truly do feel sorry for players who wanted to use the elite specs on day 1 but now do not have the time to make that happen due to real life commitments. And I do not feel sorry for ANet if that causes them to lose money.

Doesn’t matter what the rate is when you take into account you need every single point in the old maps as well. That x9 is too much.
Except you don’t! There are enough hero challenges in the jungle you don’t need to do any in the core tyrian world – those simply speed you up on day one if you already got them.
How accessible are the jungle hero challenges? Are they gated by masteries? I have 16 characters most of which haven’t done map completion (no old world hero points) and I’m worried most of these characters will become unusable because they’re not able to access the elite specializations.

Personally, I’m kinda glad that I’ll actually have to earn the elite specializations I want when HoT comes out, and not just be able to dump all my points to unlock everything for it in the first 5 minutes. Will make earning that last trait/reward more meaningful.
Though that does bring up a question: I know that there are other, not-trait things that are unlocked in the elite specialization (like the weapon and armor skin) are those going to be interspersed with the other stuff, or will we be earning those after unlocking all the traits and skills?

I’m really disappointed with this decision.
I do get why you’re locking specializations behind hero points. You probably want players to have this sense of progession as they slowly unlock their specialization.
And that’s fine.
But to me, you went the lazy way about it by tying it to Hero Points. You could have tied it to the personal story-line, so players could unlock their new powers as the story unfolds and Destiny’s Edge 1.0/2.0 unlocks it too. That would have been a nice addition to content.
Or you could have sticked to what happened in the beta, giving access to specializations as soon as we step into the jungle, which would have been fine because we will eventually get the spec through HP grinding.
But since you made this decision, now every player willing to use their elite is going to rush through the amazing maps and events just to get enough HP in order to actually start playing the expansion.
And don’t get me wrong on this, I’m not saying the specialization is the only viable spec to grind through the jungle. I’m saying that it is basically the most game-changing feature of the expansion, and people were expecting to play those specs through the new content, not to grind again some HP to start enjoying them.

Base Revenant is slow. Yes, they have the Shiro legend for superspeed, but thats 8sec of superspeed on a 10 sec cool down, but also only if you don’t use any other skills (so no condi cleanse or dashes). The lack of perm swiftness (or any swiftness on that matter) really hurts when you need to travel across maps.

Grind is really anything you feel is unnecessary mindnumbing. By definition it is doing the same thing over and over again. This is a very real concern, in that you must also level masteries just to access a lot of these hero challenges. We know this is required. It may also be locked behind story. Even if not, there is still the masteries to contend with, unless the gliding, etc., are all account based? (well should be from what was said right?) Then it shouldn’t be ‘too’ bad to get 40 hero challenges worth 10 points each. Unless, the story locks access to areas, then it’s a bit more unnecessary gating. Anything else, I’d also say this is a grind just to unlock an elite spec, and oh, you have to do it for every single character you want to unlock them on. This is the very definition of grind.

Dang it Rin….I don’t mind grind as long as it is a grind I can do. I never said I wanted it easy…just possible.
Things that worth having, are worth grinding for I agree with that.
I guess things might be easier if I belonged to a Guild, or had friends in the game to play with…but who would want to play with a clutz when team sizes are limited to 5.
I feel sick inside.

400 pts to unlock elite is outrageous. A bit sneaky too, as for all 3 beta weekends I had points left over after unlocking the elite, but now 3 days before launch they slap a few hundred more on. I have map completion and all skill point challenges in Tyria done too on my main, and I’ll now be short by 193pts. Do you not need to have the core hero challenges completed to have all unlocked? Not just the ones you get when leveling? It was my understanding that leveling to 80 would unlock all your core skills and you will need to do the hero challenges in the core world to have the 200 extra.

You completely don’t get it. Progression is fine. What is not fine is forcing me to spend points for trait lines that I do not want in order to unlock the elite spec. The elite spec line should be treated the same as any other line. You either choose to unlock it or you don’t. There shouldn’t be other requirements.

I bought the expansion just so I could play the elite specs for my classes. I know you want people to spend time in your new beautiful world. But as a WvW/PvP player I really just want the ability to play my elite specs and have fun without worrying about grinding in PvE. I’m not against PvE at all, in fact I’m glad you guys added more PvE/raid content. But please note that there’s a good sizable segment of your playerbase that would rather enjoy the other game modes, and not feel pressured to PvE just to unlock what we paid the expansion for.
I know you can earn hero points in WvW by gaining ranks. But this is a very slow way to do it given the current conversion rate. Please consider upping the WvW hero point conversion rate. Thank you. Knowing that I have to re-grind every single character just to play their elite specs properly is making me sick.
Seriously I’ll be happy and ready to spend hundreds of dollars on gems if you’ll just let me play the elite specs that I had so much fun playing over the beta weekends. The expansion price is well worth it to me if I can play the elite specs without too much hassle.

No matter how pure of a wvwer you are, I’m sure you’ll check out the pve side of the expansion for a bit. 40 hero challenges, (most likely more like 20-30 challenges for existing non revenant characters) is not very many…
Most hero “challenges” take like 30 seconds or less to complete. Let’s say the expansion version is tougher/more inolved and takes a min or a lil over.
Besides the mapping, you’re only talking about an hour of hero challenges when you get down to it.
Vast majority will have their elite spec within a few days. That is hardly a mega grind.

Assuming 145 at that point to unlock all the skills and traits (as with other lines), not including any ‘extras’ that might be sprinkled in to further delay unlocking just the functionality… you’re talking 200 points for just frills!? Granted, that’s only 20 challenges in the new zones (IF you have essentially all of the core challenges)…

Would have been nice to know a while back. Just wow on the requirement. Even only 40 jungle challenges, that’s quite a bit to get around on. So yeah you’ll have to excuse me for wanting to enjoy content rather than effectively grind hero challenges even if it’s only effectively 40 per character spread across 4 maps.

Wauw…I was glad about hearing that there is not gonna be a higher lvl cap for one reason: I’ve got 23 80 chars and there will be at least one more as soon as revenant is playable. Right now I’m really upset about the amount of grind I’ve to do if I want to maintain all of my existing chars. Do I need the specialization on all chars? Nope but I’ve got so much of them because now I can choose if I’m going with my human, norn, silvary, asura or charr warrior and just put my ascended gear on the character I like to use.
BTW I’ve bought full bag slots for every single one and this takes a kittenload of money. One more reason to be mad about this awful grind…

The worst part is that even if we can convince Anet to reduce the hero points needed, it will still probably be too much. I was having nightmare’s about 170 points.
I mean some of us have Jobs and families. How are we supposed to unlock this in a reasonable amount of time after paying for the expansions ahead of time? If I had known this was going to be introduced I would never have bought the expansion.
Youre talking about half mapping two whole zones of hero point challenges….Seriously this is too much for you?

Why? At 80 you have all unlocked, then go to jungle to get 10x points

Who thought it was a good idea to add 200pts more than required for all 3 beta weekends to unlock the elite. This is dumb. Even with map completion and all skill point challenges in Tyria done, I’ll be 197 pts shy of a full elite unlock. You guys had it right in the first place and now you spoilt it for no good reason. We already have masteries to keep us in HoT areas, why do people need even more annoying incentive.

Well, least I’m at the 200 hundred mark I guess…

Honestly… if a couple hours of playtime is going to DESTROY YOUR LIFE maybe playing games just isn’t in the cards right now. Pick up a hobby that takes less time from your work/family.

Ah, so this is why they’ve been so tight lipped about the requirements.
Kinda obvious how unpopular this was going to be.
A cool story or quest to unlock/learn the elite?
Nope, grind hero points lololol

With respect, think about less time intensive genre of gaming perhaps?

How will WvW only players unlock Elite specialization?
This has been addressed with the ability to use badges and items you get by leveling you wvw level to buy an item that will unlock a random locked hero point in either the base maps or the HoT maps. Part of this is world experience thimbles/jugs going away. You should look that up in the WvW forum section.

You’re telling me you want to rush through the map to find up to 40 hero challenges to fully unlock the elite? When you can only explore a map for the first time once.

Unless I am mistaken just to unlock half of the training line, we need 212 hero points?
You only need 60 hero points to begin using your elite spec, the points you spend after that continue to unlock more skills, traits, skins, etc.
What is the point to use a spec without trait? Trading a trait line for a weapon or a F5?
Edit:
Please, at least let us unlock all the traits first, then skills, then anything after.
