The fuss is this, the game is 50$ which does not give a free character slot like MOST expansions in Guild Wars have always done back in the day. On top of that, those who never owned the game gain a better advantage by getting the base game + the expansion for just 50$ only.
So technically I paid $50 when this game first released and the fact that arenanet snubs loyal fans into the ground even more by not offering already customers a deal but instead their new playerbase (which by this time it should be obvious that they are afte) is causing this to be an issue for many. Including me.

What about people who got the game last week? They wasted their money and could have got the game for free… ?
Perhaps they can file a support ticket. Anet has been responsive to such things in the past. It’s no guarantee, but worth a try.

When you pre order HoT you are NOT buying the core game as well. You are paying for all of the content that come with the expansion. The core game itself is absolutely FREE with this purchase and is just a added bonus for those who don’t already have the game. If you already own the game then you now have a spare account that you can use for alts(which is a good deal if you don’t want to pay for more character slots), give it to a friend or try out the EU servers if you NA only(reverse if your EU only). The expansion is not in any way over priced for the amount of content that is being supplied with it along with all of the living story updates that will come with it in time. The cost of the Original Guild Wars game $50. Every expansion after that was also $50. Granted those games were stand alone, Guild Wars 2 is not. It is a unique game that is still building is world and story which is why the core game itself is coming with the expansion. The amount of content that is being supplied in the expansion is well worth $50 especially on a game that DOESN’T require a monthly sub.
tl;dr Buy the expansion.
EDIT: Apparently you code that you are supplied with acts as either a HoT upgrade or a new account with HoT. You don’t get a second account but this is still a good deal.

Nice way to treat all the players that just bought your game recently
Seriously unfair, I finally convinced my girlfriend and another friend to pick up the game since it was only $40. Now they release this and I find out they could have got the game free. What a big “kitten you”.

I understand and agree that it is a great concept and price for new players…but what about people that have been playing the game for a couple years. You just lost any players that were planning to come back to the game for the expansion. There were so many people that had left the game and then got back on the hype train for the expansion and are immediately going to balk at the fact that they have to buy the game all over again. And then, you have the people that bought the game recently because they heard about the expansion and assumed that they would need the core game to experience the expansion, now they are faced with the idea that they are going to have to buy a game that they already paid for in the last couple months all over again…

Is the free core game its own separate key?

So I have to pay new players account? ô.o
As an existing customer, I feel simply passed over. And don’t want to forget that there is no Characterslot for the new class. Costs around 10 bucks. That are 60 Bucks (about 55€ for an Addon+Characterslot).
Without a release date a bad style is to offer something simple, too.
So we have do understand Anets catchphrases that there is nothing more nothing but a load of HoT air.

Guild Wars: Factions, $50, Guild Wars: Nightfall, $50. No. Look at EVERY expansion for World of Warcraft then come back.
Factions: Separate Campaign, added an entire continent, 2 new professions, multiple skills and armor sets, $50. Nightfall: Separate Campaign, added an entire continent, 2 new professions, multiple skills and armor sets, $50 bucks. WoW expansions, generally pretty kitten big.
HoT: Expansion, adds one profession, multiple skills and armor sets. As far as we know, the only areas added in PVE will be just to the west of Silverwastes and south into Magus Falls. I won’t be super pessimistic and say “lol only three maps!”, but such a small area doesn’t seem worth standard expansion price to me. Perhaps if they added the Maguuma Wastes all the way up to the coast of Janthir Bay and east into the Woodland Cascades, the current price would be more palatable.
I can agree with that. My issue is everyone screaming like they didn’t see this coming. Anyone with an iota of common sense saw this coming a mile away.
Wrong. People were waiting to see what will be included, and that means everything. 100% included. It’s actually funny that they released prices without revealing 100% of the content that will be included.

As long as they deliver at least 50 hours of brand new content I am with OP, otherwise it stings a bit… I think if they achieve at least dollar an hour content ratio any price is fair for the expansion.

There’s a decent amount of content in this expansion, and I know that inflation has been happening to game prices as the cost of development increases.
But to sell an expansion without a character slot is a slap in the face. In order to enjoy one of the key features of the expansion, we’re being forced to spend extra money. That’s my major problem with the standard package. I understand bundling the core game and I understand the price, but for me, $50 needs to include one character slot.
I was going to buy it tonight, but the moment I saw the lack of a character slot in the standard package, I held back. No money for you until you right this wrong. Throw in the character slot for the standard package and I’ll spend the $50 gladly.

I don’t really mind the price if it matches the content given. The guild halls look cool, some of the elite specs seem fun, but all in all I don’t have enough info about how big this xpac is going to be to say the price is fair or not. We’ll see, in any case I’m holding off until they finally cut the crap and tell us what exactly the “challenging group content” is.

For me the price isn’t the issue. The issue is the unpolished garbage UI and a vague list of deluxe bonuses without even a proper picture to show them off on the website or in-game.
What I’m looking at makes me lose confidence in the expansion itself. I would easily pay $50 for an expansion I would expect to enjoy. But I don’t want to if the expansion is as poorly shod together as the crummy broken window they’re trying to use to sell it to me.

$50 for the expansion is expected. Dunno what all the fuss is about.
It’s not JUST the $50… It’s $50 for the Expansion (without an additional character slot) and it includes the Core Game.
Thats the problem…. We already have the core game, we feel like we’re buying it twice and not getting anything to show for it.
Then your playing 50$ for the expansion and getting a free copy of a core game. Often you cant chose to not get a free thing in a bundle to drop the prices with out destroy the ideal of the bundle in the first places.
At this point most ppl who are complaining about this is more complaining that they are getting something for free.

If you think that isn’t fair, you’re being incredibly selfish and entitled.

No it is not… it is a single key you redeem on your account that changes the SKU associated with it.

OK. But a new player is getting 5 characters slots and the expansion at $50 while existing players get the expansion only. In other words, if I and my new player friend buy the game on the same day, he gets more than I do for the same price.
Well, your new player friend would have to level up, and do a bunch of story missions, and gear up, and learn how to play. Where as a Vet you can just port to Maguuma and go to town, learn masteries and such.
Why does it matter that my friend has to level? I am talking about what is being delivered for the purchase price.

50?….. I was fully hyped for this expansion. After 2 Years something months of supporting it. Absolutely killed my hype. Well, the character slot for standard edition would be nice, since we get new profession, but who cares.
Vote with Your wallet, if You think 50$ is a ripoff just don’t buy it, get over it and stop moaning.

I am willing to pay $19.99 for an account upgrade that has the HoT content and includes a character slot. I am not interested in your products if you’re trying to scam me.
My thoughts exactly. Not buying at that pricepoint especially kitten off no character slot. LOL!
How is it a scam? Have you ever bought an expansion for an MMO before? News flash, they’re all $50+.
Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward is $40. Shut up.
Whoa! A whole $10 difference! What a game breaker!
Hell, even GW2’s monthly fee is higher.
And guess what it includes!? A completely new race, 3 new classes, new skills for everyone, class-specific Limit Breaks, completely new areas, flying, airships, dungeons and raids!!
What does HoT give us for $10 bucks more? Elite specs which won’t help the professions that much [Necro will still be dead], one new profession with 0 changes to reflect that it exists, and a couple new areas and the masteries.
Wonder which one gives more by a long shot?
And pre-ordering Heavensward actually gets you exclusive in-game items and several days earlier access to the actual game, not a BETA. So there is that, too.
It does have a subscription, yes, but they have been adding things like new dungeons/raids/hard modes/personal housing with pretty much every major update, so that monthly fee actually regularly get you something new.

I can agree with that. My issue is everyone screaming like they didn’t see this coming. Anyone with an iota of common sense saw this coming a mile away.
Another thing I forgot to mention, each of the GW1 campaigns/expansions also had their own, quite sizable soundtracks! I can’t really see Anet making a soundtrack of that size for HoT if it’ll only cover such a small area, but I’d be quite happy for them to prove me wrong.
I honestly predicted the expansion would be around the $40 dollar mark based on the info Anet had seen fit to share with us at the time. It seemed a reasonable price for the size of the area they were opening up for us, as well as the new profession and other things.

I am a bit sad that I cannot get a collectors edition with a physical statue (or something similar), but the price was expected.
I even really like that the base game is included. It will be far more likely for new players to get the expansion that way. Not everything is catered to the old players. A mmo lives of getting new players as well!
And since we are a truly welcoming and nice community (most of the times), we should be happy to get fresh blood with the expansion.
I can’t wait for the expansion to drop and I will buy it! I just can’t decide which version. Half price for gems is a good deal. I would have liked something more lasting though… I am craving a special dance (like we had with Nightfall and Factions) – or the glowing hands from GW1 collectors edition. sigh
But the gem-deal is ok. I might buy it.

this should have been something around the line like and veteran players get an extra character slot with their 45€ upgrade but no base game and for new players they get base game + Hot for 45€ but no character slot. (not 45€ for base game + hot for everybody so screw you veteran players and hello new players) SO 10€ for base game which has been on sale for that price like 3 times now ? or 10€ for a character slot and 35€ for expansion pack sound fair to me

So I bought Bioshock Infinite on PS3 when it came out, and it happened to bundled with the first Bioshock as bonus. A nice deal, though I already owned a copy, so I dismissed it as an uneeded but appreciated the gesture.
I didn’t complain that somehow that meant I had to buy the same game again, or that they were taking advantage of a player loyal to the series. It’s just a free addon that would not have contributed to the price of the game, as it was the same for every version, and was inline with what most games cost at the time.
Seriously, don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. If it’s useless to you so be it. It didn’t cost you anything anyways.
Otherwise its like complaining the free fabric softener in my detergent somehow increased the price of the whole thing, and they were taking advantage of people who already bought fabric softener.
It just comes off as… out of touch with reality.
Seriously, its a 50 dollar expansion, just like what Wow, or FFXIV’s Heavensward are like. And they don’t even have the benefit of no subscription and you have to buy the orignal game in those scenarios.
Best case, a new player has to pay less.
Worst case, you have something free, but useless.
And don’t act like making it free somehow devalues you inital purchase.
It’s embarrassing I even have to type this.
Things depreciate in value guys. That game you have will likely cost less in a year, be in a bargain bin at some point, and yes, even given away for free; even after you paid full original price. Deal with it. That’s life.

After how much gemstore content has been put into the game over the past month, i probably wont be pre-ordering the expac for $65 when i could get 3 outstanding games for the same price. Also may as well make it $75-80 since i will need an extra character slot since one isn’t included.

Honestly, I don’t have a huge problem with the $50 price mark. I’ve played other MMO’s and bought their Xpac’s, they cost about the same as the game, that’s how it is. However, not including a character slot with the base game does one of 2 things. 1. buy the $10 character slot, or 2. farm it. This again wouldn’t be such a bad thing if players who are just buying HoT (and the game) now get 5 slots because they bought the game. If anything this encourages players to buy second accounts. Personally the HoT will cost $60, not the advertised $50 because I want the character slot day 1.
Arena net has also set a standard for themselves in Guild Wars 1 when they gave slots out without extra microtransactions making it more expensive. Including a character slot would have saved you guys from a TON of the hatred you guys are getting right now,

It’s a rip off at the current price point for what you get. You look at other MMO expansions and they are much beefier than what HoT is.
