4 maps ain’t enough for my cash. Just my opinion, but it’s not expansive enough. Would have loved to see lots of varied maps with about the same amount of content in each of them as the base game maps(Frostgorge, Fireheart, Cursed Shore etc.).
Colin made a statement about not raising the level cap and rendering certain content obsolete. You may not have done that, but you released so much great temporary content over the years that is gone now. The Marionette fight. The Battle for LA. The aetherblade attacks. I just don’t have any faith that this x-pac isn’t really just charging for seasonal content up front. We used to get that content for free. When there were a bunch of us asking for an x-pac we were asking for an x-pac of size and scope. Not 4 maps, a raid and some guild halls.
In 3+ years we will have gotten 7 new maps. That is truly disappointing when you look at how amazing the base game is. I will happily spend my money again on this game when we get an expansion’s worth of new zones to play in that are varied in climate and numerous.

The core game F2P now, AFTER many bought HoT because it included the core game.
Another marketing ploy that worked perfectly for them and sucks for us.

looks like Most major info is out now.
Is hot a good price to value?lets run down the information objectively;
- 1) 4 new PVE maps
- some have 3 levels, some dont
- 2) 8 new specializations
- specialisations represent a new traitline/skills/utilities/weapon they offer a new playstyle for each class
- 3) one new class, the revenant, and 1 specialization for it
- 4) new items
- 2 new armor sets
- 5 new weapon sets
- 3 new legendary weapons
- 60 new skins/minis etc
- 5)New progression: Masteries
- gain experience to unlock Area specific abilities and buffs/debuffs
- 6) Guild halls
- large gathering places for your guild to gather
- can set up battles
- can invite others
- add decorations, 175 decorations will exist
- 7) living story continues
- the next season in the ongoing story of GW2.
- 8)Raids
- 3 raid wings released over the course of first month or so
- 1st raid wing has 3 bosses
There is also the new Wvw, and it updates, and Pvp maps too, though Anet decided to not lock though away to players who did not buy HoT, and so while not fully part of the package, I still count it as too.

The tightfistedness of it all for Vets is laughable really. Im seeing this particular ‘business model’ of ripping off loyal customers everywhere – Banks rip off savers, Media companies like Virgin only give decent deals to new customers – it encourages lack of staying power – which in this type of game is a bad thing – unless they are happy with a revolving door of newbies?
The argument re look how much time you had to play the game means nothing – GW2 wouldn’t have ever been financially in the position to keep going and produce an XP if Vets hadn’t bought full priced games and bought gems. Look at Wildstar.
We get a character slot ( only if we pre purchase) and a free outfit that only looks ok on heavy armor wearers.
I mean how many business models are they going to try and use at the same time to leech more cash?! They now have money coming in from Gem store, xp, and upgrades from f2p – people should really be expecting ALOT more from the xp for such a huge cash injection when they already paid for the xp with the gem store money
And with F2P its now the second time new starters have been bait and switched – first the sale at £10 being replaced with Hot plus free base game, now with F2P after loads of people bought the Hot+Base.
I think what stands out most for me though is only TWO armor sets in the main pve game – by the time I had levelled the 10 levels on WoW I had worn countless different armor and that was before hitting end game armor – no content for the whole year so far because ‘we are too busy’ but they still manage to knock out Gem store items?
Flawless cash grab I have to give them that…

I am wearing it, it looks neat on the Charr character I just rolled to play with the new guests the game got. I hope they decide to buy HoT too, cause so far, they are having fun getting their feet wet in the game.

Is there really nowhere to buy this at all in Canada? With the awful exchange rate right now it costs $66 (plus 12% tax for my province), which is what brand new, FULL games are going for now. That’s nearly $20 more for an expansion than I paid for Guild Wars 2 at release! I really hope there’s some way to pay for this in Canadian funds, really sick and tired of the tradition of screwing Canadians over.
On a personal note I also can’t just go and drop $66 on a game regardless right now… or for a while. I got really screwed over by my last employer.

especially when in other games this:
http://eu.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/help/option_service/veteran_rewards/
exists.
I understand trying to keep everyone on an even ground, but I don’t think that rewarding trust and money spent would insult anyone. As it stands a veteran player that made multiple gem purchases is only worth as much as a new player that just decided to buy HoTs. That’s not really encouraging people to spend money in my opinion.

Gem buying does not mean a thing, it was a donation to the game, seeing how you bought the game, that the only part of the money that should count, and even then, you got your money worth x10 i bet.

really? Because I could have just as easily gold → gems instead. If there’s no appreciation for being both a long time player and devoting your money to the game, then what’s the incentive to continue to do so? If you’re only ever considered the exact same as a free account (except that they get screwed over out of one time events, such as SAB, which I still have to ask why, especially having in mind that Anet sold an infinite continue coin and then took it down permanently over a year ago), why not spend your money with the competition instead?

you donated to the game, but using i bought gems, as a reason to think your better, that just not right at all. How many hours have you put into the game, divide that by the amount you bought the game, and see how far that $ took you.

The difference between a free account and paid account are actually huge. Just to get the same amount of character, bag slots, and access to Season 2 content it costs $56 for a free player to get that a non free account has, and the free account still has all kinds of restrictions to go a long with it. That is far from being “exact same as a free account”

I actually missed the Season 2 and had to buy it with real money. So it was sort of free, if you had the luxury to log in.

and I am doing! I was spending 20£ on gem cards a month before to support the game, however with each developer post after the expansion announcement I felt worse and worse. So I moved on to watch if the situation improve even a little bit.

No your not, you choose to donate, that not the same as people forced to pay 15$ a month to keep their character and game alive. I know i am not saying this the best, but gem buying as a choice should not make you, or make other belive your owed more, cause you get a values out of using them too how ever you use them.

sure, it’s not forced, but at least a) no content is taken away from you and b) you will never be able to spend your money to purchase an item that gives you absolutely nothing. Gamble boxes, gamble dye packs, infinite continue coin for content that we haven’t seen for over a year.
So yes, it was my choice to donate. However when you pick up how you’re being treated versus how they treated you at the start of the game… I don’t feel like any further money is welcome from me. And it’s fine and dandy because you shouldn’t feel like your input would ever matter as you’re a mere replaceable number to them.
When Guild Wars 2 just launched they had some nice practices though. Like you would at random be gifted a future store item, just for spending money that quarter (my boyfriend and me received the kite for free for example). You were told that there were more classes added over time, the game advertised as “purchase once and get all the future content trough the updates!”. They really turned their backs on all that.

You voluntarily bought GEMS for a game that did not require any form of payment beyond the purchase price, which means you can decide to not buy gems for a long time and still be able to play the game. meanwhile if you decide to not pay the $15 a month for FF14, you lose access to the game you bought.
I can only imagine how upset you were when the game was being sold for much less than than what you bought it for.
As for season 2, you are saying that during season 2, you could not log in at least 1 time during a 2+ week period to get access to each of the season 2 episodes? I wasn’t playing during that time either, but I was able to spend a couple of minutes every 2+weeks to get the episode onto my account.

I was actually happy? I’m not upset in the slightest that the game is F2P now, I was just saying that I don’t feel appreciated as a customer and why couldn’t we copy other MMOs and appreciate people once in a while?

No, they said purchase once and never have to pay for a subscription. They never said what you stated. Also I have never seen them promise to add more classes to the game.
Free stuff? Like a free outfit? Free birthday gift? Free black lion stuff 5 times a month just for logging in? Free character slot for pre-purchasing Expansion.
So getting more now, than what we used to get around the beginning is treating us wrong? You have very fuzzy logic there.

You forgot access to ongoing new raid content, a new elite spec for every class, masteries for both the existing world and HoT, guild hall overhaul, a completely new set of missions in your personal story (with multiple branching paths), and access to ongoing living world content updates.
Also, those 4 maps are massive have have multiple floors, so they’re a bit larger than they seem.
There’s also no way to tell, difinitively, how many new armor/weapon skins are in the expeansion until it releases. Datamining will only ever reveal what’s in the client. Thinking they’ve added the entire HoT cache to the current client is a little naive.

“So right now we’re not really looking at expansions as an option,” lead content designer Mike Zadorojny told me on his visit to London last week.
“It’s something that’s on the table but it’s not something we’re focused on, because what we want to do is – our idea here is that with Living World, we can do what expansions would have done but do it on a more regular basis.”
Refer to the bold. Your concept of a promise is way too broad an encompassing.

But we may between now and when the next expansion comes out get more armors, weapons, and maps, all tied to content that requires HoT to access.
And different people calculate whether something is worth it or not differently. You look at content.
I look at hours of enjoyment I’ll get out of it. If I can get one hour of enjoyment per $ spent, then I view that as worth it. Sometimes I calculate correctly (Guild Wars 2). Sometimes I calculate incorrectly, though I do always try to at least play the number of hours equal to the $ I spent (Sims 4 and I’m still not up the $ I spent and that was $35.).

I’ll leave you to decide if that is worth spending $50 on. It sure was for me.

I just want to throw this out there. I preordered the expansion and have owned the game since early launch. Probably 80% of my time with this game has been in PvP. I’ve played the same 7 maps vs 5 other people over 6000 times. I know people where IT’S OVER 9000!!! But I digress.
The point is, I feel I’ve gotten my money’s worth, which is why I have given ANet hundreds of dollars in gems.
If you aren’t sure that you’ll be able to get your money worth by buying the expansion full price, just wait. The price of everything devalues over time.

The entitlement generation really irks me to no end. When LucasFilm released the original trilogy on VHS, then VHS widescreen, then DVD, then Blu-ray I bought them all without ever complaining.
I think the problem here is this is a virtual item, not a physical product in the store. No one would ever complain if they saw Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns in physical form for $50, but because it’s virtual there’s no “tangibility” to the product. So they don’t place any value or worth on it.

HoT $50 dollars, potential playtime 4000 plus hours.

Experiencing Tyria and all it’s glory, get tons of exclusive skins and exclusive content no new player will ever see:
PRICELESS
Brand new game, console or whatever else, $50 dollars potential playtime 200 hours.

IDK. I think there are valid points on both sides of the conversation. I think there are people saying things that don’t make sense too. Here’s my take: New players should be able to get the core game and HoT for $50. That’s an amazing deal. People who already owned the game should be able to buy HoT for less. That business model was around forever and it worked and it seems like a fair way to do it for all parties involved.
I think the base game+50 is worth it. More than worth it. Do I think the x-pac alone is worth $50? No. Why? Because it isn’t a complete thing. It’s content up front and a season or two of living story to follow and that content was a mixed bag. Some of it was astonishingly brilliant and some of it was really disappointing.
I believe ArenaNet dropped the ball here. Perceived value is a thing. I don’t think vets are getting perceived value with this. Some players may and that is totally fine and they are entitled to that opinion. Just like players who are miffed that they have to pay $50 for just the x-pac are miffed. Opinions. Stop the name calling. Stop the whining. Stop the entitlement. ArenaNet is entitled to charge what they want for their product and we are entitled to think it’s a good value or not.

No, they said purchase once and never have to pay for a subscription. They never said what you stated. Also I have never seen them promise to add more classes to the game.
this is only one of the examples as there were a lot of promises and statements made by Anet that later got changed.
Except that isn’t an example of what you are trying to claim at all. Read that article again, and you will see where they actually made no promises, and how they did not say expansions was not a possibility, let alone stating “pay for the game once, get all content through updates for free” like you claimed.

Keep in mind that you won’t be able to unlock the living story for free if you don’t purchase HoT. The price of HoT will increase the longer you wait, until it goes on sale which will just average it out. Even when HoT is free, the cost of those missed seasons will be similar to HoT’s current price.

I agree, it’s pretty bad value, especially when you consider you don’t even get a char slot to play the new class that comes with the expansion, essentially making it a $60 expansion.

So tired of seeing these complaint posts. Simple if you don’t like the direction they’re going don’t buy it. I for one think the changes are brilliant and have gotten 3 years of absolute enjoyment out of Guild Wars 2. Furthermore I had no problem giving 50 bucks for HoT, and for gems over the 3 years. They have put out so much regular free content and updates. It’s going going to get better, but if you want to jump ship over it go ahead, no one is stopping you.
