ArenaNet has no plans to bring back soloQ. They want it to be a team game. But since this is a free game (no subscription) they already have your money and if you quit playing it does not hurt them financially.
Of course it does because you won’t be buying gems. And the revenue they received from HOT sales was not enough to sustain development long term.
55% win rate last season got to division 5 quite easy, now i win 1 in 5 games, the ones i win are won quite easy, so thanks for the good times arena net.
if its “random”, then how is it possible that i have not been “randomly” placed on a team that wins? How is it that every game has been a destruction?
Because its not random. Thats exactly what we were trying to tell you.
Edit: Infact it will become LESS random the longer the league runs. And even matchups will start to form NATURALLY instead of ARTIFICIALLY. Which is what the PvP playerbase asked for.
The teams he plays are random within a range, how come he hasn’t played teams with a worse mmr than him? Average and low mmr players should vastly outnumber high mmr players why are so many average and low mmr teams being matched solely against high mmr teams? As for evening up time will tell.
And this isn’t the best system for GW2 pvp to progress as ESPORT, the best would involved seeding players into divisions or players being matched against those with a similar mmr. And in fact for average and low mmr players the S1 system is better.
I find it quite funny how everyone analyzes the system and even if my opinion is, that it’s very poor as it is, nobody realizes where the matchmaking has it’s actuall flaw:
The main idea (how I understood) was to get players matched faster and allow the high ranked players from last season to advance to where they “belong”. Now the problem with this is that the guys landing in the “hell bracket” actually lose interest in playing pvp, since they don’t win any games. So the pvp player base is slowly but inevitably shrinking, resulting in higher queue times, since obviously, you have less players spread over the divisions. This IS the flaw in your system.
I really do not understand how this system actually made it to production, because:
1. If a player belongs to diamond, he will make his way up, no need to make it easy for him
2. If you wanted the high ranked players to stay where they are, plainly dont reset them all into first division. Take a look at other popular games with world wide competions.
3. Players who didnt get far in season 1, for example because they didnt play much, will now get bashed
4. All the players who abused the mmr in season 1 and reached high divisions, will now get matched with pros and carried, since mostly the enemies are bloody noobsAs for me, pvp at this time reached its lowest point all time, so I will stay away untill things will change.
This man gets it. I would not touch the current pvp at all anymore after seeing the first ~20 matches of the season if I would not need the achievement points at all cost. It is just 0 fun atm.
1) Balance is the worst in the history of GW2, worse than season 1 even
2) Matchmaking total and utter crap if you arent ESL material
It is a mystery to me how 50% of the patches/updates make the game worse instead of better. Maybe the Anet devs should play their own game more religiously. Every Anet dev should be forced to play the game at least 10 hours per week (unpaid, during the freetime) in the game mode they work on.
(edited by Malediktus.9250)
kitten you Anet! I had a match were there was a 5 man pre-made and a 4 man pre-made, and I ended up in the 4 man pre-made team in solo queue! So F you! I want my pip back! You f liars! F pre-mades! F you all who does that, and because of that many solo player looses!
Worst matchmaking ever. Its not balanced in any way – 1. classes: you get 5 same classes in 1 team easily.
2. teams arent equal in strength: you mix complete newbies vs high ranks and pls dont try to tell me this is not true. Yes it is true. I am steamrolled almost every match where my teammates doesnt even know where to go, while the other team knows perfectly everything.
(edited by Constantine.7812)
I didn’t play season 1 very long (~1 month) because the lack of balancing through the powercreep of the HoT elitespecs was just the absolute worst I have ever seen in any competitive game.
Now I really regret this choice because who comes up with a matchmaking system like the one in season 2 now. Do you have balls floating around a basin with random ideas and have manatees grab some of them that you then mash together to create a new matchmaking system?
The lack of balance people could kind of live with. Every build has their weaknesses and while some just have way less then others (95% of players are necro, engi, ele or revenant right now) good players can still cope with that.
It’s this absolutely nonsense system that requires you to have winning streaks or else you will be stuck forever. +1/-1 is just simply bad design.
I hope the manatees pick a better matchmaking system next time, maybe something that focusses on a mix of MMR, matches played, matches won with this class etc.
The match making system was broken last season, and is more broken this season. In a system where you need to win multiple games in a row in order to progress thru the tiers a 50% win loss ratio means the majority of the people will never progress out of tier 3. The truth of the situation is that Anet is using the majority of this community as fodder for the top 5% of the player base. They refuse to put in a solo que because they know that the majority of the people in this game will do the solo que, and it will leave no one for their precious elite pvp teams to play against except each other.
I’ll explain the lopsided games.
“Beginning with Season 2, matchmaking for Ranked matches will use your placement in your current league division as your primary matchmaking consideration and pair you against players who are placed in the same point range as you, regardless of the skill level (MMR) of the other people in that point range."
This is what they said how the season 2 MM system will work.
So actually to clarify something and please correct me if I’m misreading. The way the system currently works is it only considers MMR on your own team and not the full 10 players. So let’s say there’s 10 people queuing within an acceptable division range, 5 players are around 800 MMR and the other 5 are around 1000 MMR. Due to the fact that the system only considers making a team of 5 of similar MMR players at a time, the 5 800 MMR players will be put on one team and the 5 1000 MMR players will be on the other team. So what you get is high skilled players on 1 team and less skilled players on the other. Of course the result is the 800 MMR team getting stomped.
The result is you will never get a balanced team vs. balanced team like a team of 2 1500 MMR players + 3 800 MMR players vs. 2 1500 MMR players + 3 800 MMR players.
But with all said, I prefer the balanced team vs balanced team setup more.
The thing is eventually the teams will end up balanced. Or atleast so close it won’t matter. As different teams will progress at different rates. The 800mmr people SHOULD start fighting other 800mmr (or close) becuase they will be the only ones in range.
Atleast thats how I have understood it.
Eventually it will work out yes you are correct. As the 800 MMR people will be the only ones in the suitable division range so 800 MMR vs 800 MMR games will happen. The question is how long will that take though and if it takes too long is this system worth it as you’ll be playing lopsided games for a while. Another thing I’m wondering about is the decreasing player population amplifying this as well.
These are all good explanations (and questions) :]
So really there’s no point in even playing pvp right now for 50% of your player base?
At this point I’m not sure what value there is,if any at all in giving feedback
to Anet about PvP.
It’s obvious from the current state of the game that -A. they favour players
that queue in parties or teams over solo players -B.they favour the elite
specs,which are made extremely overpowered,for whatever reasons,and
-C.Anet themselves have stated that the PvP push is mainly marketing driven.
A few more remarks.
-The game is not skill based anymore. It never was 100% skill based but since
HoT the build you play dictates 80% of your performance.
If you are a player like me,who likes to play non meta builds and despises
meta battle, forget it.Better go fish or something.
-The game puts you in situations where you are supposed to lose, and penalizes
you for that.
-In order to advance in the leagues you need to be persistently matched against
lower skilled players,so you can achieve the win streaks required.
-There are even more one sided matches now than there ever where in sPvP,
even more than unranked I could say.
Now,bad matchmaking alone,or significant class imbalance alone maybe wouldn’t
be a reason enough for me to stay away from PvP,but put these two together
and the outcome is pure quaggan poop.
I’m not vegetarian, but quaggan poop is way too much for me.

Yeah, this season is ANOTHER bust.
Ranked has basically turned into hotjoin. You know, when the “know how” players stack on the first good player that joins, so the other team gets stuck with noobs getting stomped. At Ruby rank I am constantly having this dirty little cheat system completely stack the cards against me. Huge fail ANET. Please l2math.

???? this system is the competitive system we asked for, no idea why are ppl crying a river on forums about this particular addition. dont really know what the ‘0-15 lost gg anet’-people are ranked atm but the majority of the top players are #3+ already(where mm works as intended from my experience) so casuals getting matched with pros is really unlikely. if you are in amber and you lose 0-15 thats a big problem and indicates that you need more practice @the game and @the spec you are playing and you should do unrankeds for 3-4 days till better players climb so you have more chance to succeed.
Edit: this behaviour of the MM-system was predicted. things gonna settle naturally it’s just needs some time. after players spread out this mm gonna work wayyyy better than the previous one. WAY BETTER! basicly the case is that the ‘not-the-best’ part of the pvp community is suffering for the better future.

if its “random”, then how is it possible that i have not been “randomly” placed on a team that wins? How is it that every game has been a destruction?
It’s because it was random. You simply weren’t lucky.
Mind you, it stops being random the more matches you play, as the game throws you in groups with worse and worse players the more you lose.

SO WHAT? Is that FAIR? Is that JUST? That players, paying customers should SUFFER just so the product works?! SCREW THAT. SCREW….THAT.
I’m tired, tired TIRED of apologists defending an unfair system. It’s messed up, really messed up.

‘We’ didn’t ask for this kitten show of a system. S1 with teh addition of the anti smurfing measure would have been far far preferable to this.
The problem with this system is there are too much variances and random variables that probably won’t get balanced out over time. Also I don’t think making the first few weeks to first month unplayable is a really good way of doing this.
I prefer S1 system with anti smurfing/stacking and anti tanking mmr better.

Well ,if you had an idea you wouldn’t be posting this ,would you?
How big or small is the part of the population that is being at the
receiving end of the matchmaking system’s lovemaking, remains to
be seen. Also, how many of them will still be here playing PvP after
the system has “settled” is also in question.
People don’t play games so that they can be sacrificed for the “greater
good” and a “better future”,especially when the road to the future is paved
in misery and frustration.
So,time will tell.
Will the system settle? Will there be a loss or gain in PvP population?
Will it rain tomorrow?
It’s pretty funny. I started league today and I went on a streak to get out of amber. Did not lose one game. Games were pretty boring tho.
Won one game with a score of 563-40. And there was 3 thieves on my team. One guy on the other team was playing a zerker thief with staff, it was probably his first or second game ever in pvp. It was funny watching him blow up.

Isn’t this exactly what ppl were asking for? Ppl didn’t want to have 50/50 win ratio because it was hard to make progress, in other words ppl didn’t want fair matches. Of course everyone can’t have winrate above 50, so this is what you get. When matchmaking works you have 50% change to win and it is up to you to make that little difference to go against the odds.
The way this seem to work now is not verry welcoming to new players and even average players have problems. And ppl saying that the system will settle after a while, but how long is it going to take, a month? Because if pvp is disabled for a month because season ended and for the next month there is no reason to play if you are not a pro, that is a really nice way to lose players… Ppl lose interest in 2 months real easy especially now that some competing games are hitting the market.
i mean i agree with you. fully. i did not ask for a slughterfest on low players really. dont missunderstand me. this is just the best ANet could offer in terms of competitive ladder system. they could have given people with higher season#1 ranks or MMR or no matter what a headstart to make the first 2-3 days lest harsh or literally anything that smooths the gap between the playerbase(didnt meant to offend anyone lol):
if you are in amber and you lose 0-15 thats a big problem and indicates that you need more practice @the game and @the spec you are playing and you should do unrankeds for 3-4 days till better players climb so you have more chance to succeed.
+ another point of my comment was that this happening cound be and HAVE BEEN forseen. Thats why i wonder why people are surprised about all this.
(edited by MadVisions.4529)
all I know is condition damage is out of control in pvp, so I stopped playing. When conditions start doing more than power burst attacks, like 5.9k burning instantly, and you’re dead in literally 3 seconds because toughness has no effect on conditions, I’m just done.
So MMR aside, the population issue, at least from people I know is dropping due to the stupidly short TTK and insanely overpowered conditions at the moment. There aren’t enough condi cleanses to handle multiple condi builds, even just two, hitting you at once.
My friends and I started GW2 and did nothing but PvP, we’ve slowly migrated to pve or just…quit in most of my friend’s cases. With BDO out there now, we’ll see even more population drop. Anet, please work on the TTK, this is an MMO not CSGO. People dying before an esports commentator can even COMMENTATE is not how it’s supposed to work.

My question right now is; How do you work around the constant losing-loophole you risk finding yourself in?
My question right now is; How do you work around the constant losing-loophole you risk finding yourself in?
1. You don’t play
2. You play with 4 high mmr players (you know when they never lose) in a team
3. As most “pro” players would say: learn 2 play and carry your whole team alone
4. You hack the Anet Servers and change your division to legendary 999 in their database
So I don’t have a problem with the system in theory but I am not sure it is working as intended.
I have two accounts – on one my win rate has been at least 60% more like 70%. In the other my win rate has been about 20% if not worse. Same player but huge variation in results which I don’t really understand the reason for.
We shouldn’t be expected to endure this level of bad matchmaking while your pip system balances out, if it ever does. I doubt it will, not to an acceptable level your MMR did before. This league launch was an absolute failure. You threw away three years of metrics that allowed you to have actual good quality ranked play. We currently don’t have a ranked mode. We just have a completely unranked mode with meaningless pips. The pips don’t track any meaningful stats except WLR for the previous x number of days. It does nothing to create quality, meaningful matches. You threw everything away to pander to your top 5%. Well, I hope you’re proud of that and you enjoy your unprecedented population loss.

The reason is this: the number of sPvP games played on the account was added to the matchmaking. I would guess that your account with more games puts you with more experienced people.
This game needs at least three changes which will fix the mmr too.
1) groups queue against groups only, solo queue against solo only
2) balancing before a season starts
3) bans for abandoning matches by being afk or leaving
The reason is this: the number of sPvP games played on the account was added to the matchmaking. I would guess that your account with more games puts you with more experienced people.
You would guess wrong. Over 5000 on my main account that I am losing with. Only a few hundred on the other……
I think part of the crying are the veterans who tanked their MMR last season. Now they are stuck with a low MMR and get teamed with other low MMR players. Since they are vets their MMR is not volatile and will take quite a long time to go back up even if they are able to carry their team.
Bah you know the saying about karma
Cheers

Why you think MMR from season1 is used in season2 and was not resetted for all players at beginning of season2?
Because good players are teamed with good ones and bad players to each other.
Besides they would have said if they had reset MMR between seasons, and a resed would make no sence with the new matchmaking
matchmaking is so bad that I am even loosing games if enemies have an afk for the whole game (0 personal score). Before that match I had afkers on my team twice in a row.
Currently at 8 losses in row again. My MMR must be the lowest possible lol.
Currently I am hopeless to even reach diamond this season. I dont think someone with 2k+ tpvp wins with champion title for all classes but revenant should be stuck in emerald <.<

The reason for this has been explained in a dozen threads now. The general consensus is let the kitten league sort out. We KNEW this is what would happen. Nearly every PvPer that asked for exactly for this system knew this would happen. The issue is alot of those people didn’t realize where there skill level actually was. Now that were being partnered by tier instead of by Win/Loss ratio people are getting harsh wakeup calls.
Let the max tier people get where they need to go. It won’t take the much longer to spread out. But making rage posts cussing out Anet for giving us EXACTLY what the vocal portion of our community asked for is not exactly bright…nor is it fair to Arenanet.
This is total sanctimonious bs! Im at basically an 88 straight loss streak (2 wins in between). NO ONE is THIS BAD. If you have pvp’ed EVER logic would dictate unless there’s something wrong with you, you should win A FEW MORE THAN 2! Give me a break.

Its already confirmed. Higher mmr players, is farming everyone else now at the start because the system match them together and average & low mmr get teamed together. Not much you can do unless youre God. Trust me when i say, the players who got carried by the system to sapphire, suck bananas. Theyre worse than amber players.

I honestly would not be surprised if this was the case. The new players will of course start at amber/emerald and veterans will be stuck with them.

How is this a serious comment? First playing on a team will eliminate most of the mm-issues giving you a good comp by itself is a huge advantage so the idea that players who are “elite” typically playing on premades are ranked high is ridiculous. They were ranked high last season too, and if they were just abusing the system of inviting a lowbie to skew games or alt account players then they should probably have been excused from this season.
This system isn’t that likely to work in the long run either. Its going to falsely push a bunch of people all over the place mmr-wise leaving a ton of players with zero pips in diamond who will just quit because once they start losing they’ll just keep getting tossed in together and it’ll blow their minds that “they’re no longer able to carry the scrubs” because they absolutely were the ones being carried.
The player base which is already significantly diminished is going to shrink one more time because who wants to deal with the rage of being put on a bad team 30 times in a row? There is no long term viability for this plan. It was stated before the season started, but this whole system makes a mockery of elementary statistics.
Well so far, I am on Tier 4 of Amber. Got there with a few hours of playing off and on. Last Season I started late and only made it to Emerald.
So far, I have been winning just about every match with a few losses sprinkled in every now and then.
I’ve had a few close matches, but they have mostly been completely one-sided. I was even disconnected during a match for a good while right at the start. I came back about 300 or so points in the game, and we were winning. Yeah, my team was outnumbered and still winning. It feels like I’m playing Hotjoin on the team where all the good players stacked.
I mean, I’m fighting people like Druids who are just camping Longbow, never once swap weapons, and just drop so easily. I’ve seen silly builds like MM Necro running around. When I have lost, the others on my team were the type who like to fight off in an open field somewhere and neglect points, the type who will never attempt to res or stomp someone in a teamfight, the type that have no idea how to use the minimap or call targets.
So, while the current matchmaking is benefiting me, it’s still no fun, and surely not fair to those on the losing team who had no chance of winning.
And you know, I’m curious… who in the world puts together a match where one team literally has no chance of winning. I mean, what good could come from that? Why would that ever be a good thing? And then to punish them for their defeat (which was pre-determined) on top of that? It sucks losing a match when your team didn’t have a chance, I can’t imagine how frustrating it must be to get nothing but losing match-ups in this new system.
I can feel your pain. Even though I didn’t get that bad losing streak as you, my win ratio is for this season around 11%. Compare it to last season where I could have little higher than 50%.
Sure there are better players than I but I refuse to believe I am THAT bad. I don’t know how much better matchmaking will get in time but right now it is really unbalanced/broken. Can’t say I enjoy losing that much, especially if I can do my part but rest of my team can not, yet I still get punished by losing pips…
Right now I maybe have 1 win per 3-5 matches.
It’s not fun to non-stop lose…
It’s not fun to play unfair matches if you had 55% win ratio in previous season.
It’s not fun to hear that you have to keep losing until your mmr or matchmaking will be balanced.
Game has no point of playing or buying if it don’t give any type of fun or satisfaction for your effort.
For now as casual i can say that playing ranked is waste of time and a lot players will say the same. I love pvp but many ppl will just quit.

I am really Astonished. really…. i’ve read dozens of post like this at this point. and i feel really sorry and bad for seeing players actually quit becouse of a system i’ve beed waiting since long long time.
I am just screaching my head atm…. what to say to stay constructive, help and meanwhyle dont hurt anyones feelings.
so. Back in time when i started pvp i havnt even touched ranked for a long time. i was thinking like: hmm ranked.. ranked means competition in every game and obviously i can feel i’m a beginner so lets get better and mby then i can show off some ranks later. Imo i’ve hit the 1k unrankeds way before i even started to think about ranked.
The thing is that the newly implemented MM algorythm NO LONGER supports grinding based progression like the previous ones. This means that progression is enchanced by the skill level of an individual and not the bare will to progress. League system was implemented to indicate one’s mad haxor PvP skills with a tiny icon next to his/her name so everyone can see how big his E-PENlS is. Now, becouse the smurfing and abusing has been (mostly)fixed and the league is skill based, a mediocre random player can no longer have the same E-PENlS icon as an ESL player at least not as fast.
To get to the point. If someone is enduring a humilating 15lose streak or barely reaches 20% winning in this season should ask himself: “Am I prepared to play the most competitive part of the game? maybe not. Maybe wanting to be faster ranked up than way better players than me is a bit eager behaviour… Mby i should go practice a bit more so i can later suprise everyone with how good i am!”
You are being deeply offensive MadVisions. In essence, you’re making the claim that it’s OK for the majority to suffer because “good” players have a right to enjoy the game the way they want.
Well as I once told the class commodore of my local club’s US 1 meter class; That’s fine, but if you lord it over everyone too much.. there won’t be anyone left to lord over. It’s lonely being elite and alone as our class champion learned.
No, it really isn’t OK for an elite to have fun and low queue times by trampling the majority, Fortunately, this is a game world and people have the option to simply go elsewhere.
Lolz @ MadVisions, Soo if weve been practicing pvp for 3 years straight for about 5-7 hours a day/night and use meta builds and focus on capturing points (although its impossible when you get put on a team with people who dont think its important to capture or keep points, or people who die in like less than a second ) How much more practice do you think we need before we are worthy to enter ranked?
Played more games today, only lost once when guild member just had to come with me. Besides that, I’ve been doing great, constant winning. Lol.
4 games in a row I played the same player on the opposing team, he was actually decent, god-like compared to his teammates. I felt kind of bad.
However, constantly winning by a huge score difference gets kind of boring. I hope eventually everyone makes it to where they belong skill-wise.
Yeah I had a 500-120 or so game today where the other side had ok players who knew how to rotate and fight etc. Their only problem was they had a thief with 0 points spamming shortbow on ledges and getting 1 shot every time our revs looked at him.
I feel bad for that team, their MMR will just keep dropping even though they’re not half bad.
That’s your answer? It’s better if you just straightened your stuff out. Can’t you see your customers are complaining?

It’s day 5. Way too early to tell if this needs to be straightened out at all. People are still getting into their appropriate league positions. Evan Lesh’s answer was fine.
