Hobosack is an abomination. It kills the beauty of the characther by removing constantly the back skin. Fix it. Please

+1 to this, I love engineer but I’m really tired of never being able to use a backpack skin and it also means there is no point at all in making a legendary for an engineer, which saps a lot of fun out of the game.
Been following this thread since launch, coming back for Heart of Thorns because the trailer showed a hammer engi with no sack – praying the specialization removes the need for kits as the only viable build!

C’mon A-net, how could this really be that hard to fix? There have been so many very good ideas put forward by players in this thread alone, pick one and go with it so this monstrosity of the thread can die. I think the community is pretty united in saying that we hate the hobosacks.

Nobody looks at the sacks to check the engi kit especially since it doesn’t kittening matter because its 1s to swap to another one.

I ‘unno if that would actually be sufficient, anymore. See, every time they respond to it, it’s “We don’t have the resources right now,” and there’s never even conjecture about when they might. They occasionally tell us they’ve been spitballing ideas, but they just never do anything, and so far we’ve let them just keep going “We don’t have the resources.”
We have no way of holding them to anything they say, obviously – aside from playing or not playing, buying gems or not buying gems – but at this point, I don’t a word will work anymore. The first time or two, sure, whatever, but now it’s just getting stupid.
I know, but, since Im also a developer, I know that following all the small things can be counter-productive…so if they had the need to focus on this xpac is fine for me, as long as they tell us* something* will come ;-)

Oh, yeah, focusing on the expansion is fine and dandy. No complaints about them focusing on that. Gotta have it working, etcetera. Then again…they’ll always have something else to focus on. Something ‘bigger,’ something they can put on the Gem Store.
This has been getting the “We don’t have the resources” response from close to release, when they were working on spectator mode, along with a few other things. It made sense, then, too, because…well, they wanted to be an esport, Spectator Mode is pretty necessary for that. But, then they got those working, and the resources just kept getting reallocated. They keep getting reallocated. At this point, they’ve said “we want to fix it” every time they’ve responded, following up with “but we can’t do it right now, we have bigger projects.” Which, really, is part of the point; this is such a small thing that it could probably be resolved very quickly, if they bothered to.
If we just keep trying to get them to acknowledge it, they’ll just set up a routine. Every few months, they’ll go “We’re reading this thread, lots of great ideas, our people are spitballing some things around the office, but we don’t have the resources to work on this at the moment. We’ll get to it!” Right there, I’ve pretty much paraphrased every response received regarding this, so they really might have already come up with a routine.
Acknowledging is no longer enough. We’ve been strung along for years on this, and it’s honestly kind of disgusting.
Let’s hope all top priorities are gone after HoT hits ;-)

The only time I don’t mind the hobo sack is when I use the flame thrower kit. However I agree that it really needs to go. It breaks the look of armor sets and generally is just awful.
When a back item is show, the kit’s backpack should not replace the back. Instead what they have in their hands should be enough.
For example:
- Flamethrower and elixir gun: They already have their rifle visuals, so no need for more.
- Tool kit. A bag (like the sacks in the “Steal food from grawl for Kani” event in Wayfarer Foothills) appears in the character’s left hand. The bag changes into a shield and magnet for those skills.
- Grenate kit: The character shows a box of grenades under their right arm (grenades are thrown with the left arm).
- Bomb kit: The character shows a barrel of gunpowder under their left arm.
Options never hurt anyone. If it is a mandatory change though, I’m against weapons because Asura.

Do you mean you’re against weapons because the look silly in Asura hands? Or are you against them because it’s hard to see what weapon an Asura is holding?
If it’s the former, I understand, but it’s something that every Asura of every other profession kinda already has to deal with. If it’s the latter, only place where that matters is sPvP, and there is an option to turn all your opponents into basic, easily-differentiated human models for Ranked PvP and custom arenas with the right options selected. You should always have it on. Plus I’d be shocked if any change to how kits are displayed didn’t also come with a status bar indicator like elementalist attunements, so that it won’t matter if they replace hobosacks with hipsacks, or more visual weapons, or nothing, or give us the option of any of those things, because you’ll be able to tell what kit an Engineer is using, if any, the moment you target them.

I’ve seen this thread being created two years ago and here it is now. Well, kitten . As much as I stopped minding the hobo sacks, it sure could use an improvement.
Status bar indicator + small graphical tweak is the way to go, and by small i mean something that’s easily deployed and tested.
When or after HoT hits, the “no resources” excuse has to drop: cmon ANET, engi community deserved that for so much time.

Therefore, the “visibility” of the hobosack IS NOT IMPORTANT. Truth is, it has never been.

This was always a huge turn off for me for engineers. In fact I abandoned my Sylvari engineer for an Asura just because the kit backpacks are much smaller on them relative to their body size, so less offensive.
The commonly cited – “but we must know what kit you have equipped in pvp” argument is obviously nonsense. Otherwise EVERY weapon in the game should force a kit to spawn on a player’s back so people can tell what you’re wielding from behind. And Asura should be banned from PvP cos they’re smaller and their backpacks are harder to see.
Would definitely be nice to see this eventually fixed with HoT.
‘bout asura size, you know, there’s an option for normalized models in pvp ;-)
I agree with the visibility stuff thing, anyway an indicator on status buff will suffice like for elementalist ;-)

Yes they’re ugly and a huge turn off. if you aren’t able to fix it at least let us hide it like the normal backpacks or even better let us replace the skins with one of the available in hand backpacks

I don’t see why this thread needs to be here. Obviously the reason the current patch was delayed was to make sure that the toggle option to hide hobosacks was working properly

I’d like to see some options, but comments like, “this NEEDS addressing.” are simply not true. The class started with these items and still has them. It kind of identifies an Engineer to have them. It’s not a “fix” or a “bug” but a requested change. Call a spade a spade, guys.
I doubt the Devs are ever going to comment unless they have something to say that won’t cause a collective hissy fit. What do they have to gain by doing so?
And again, this request has absolutely ZERO to do with HoT itself…..

Hobo sacks make me sad. All Anet has to do is reskin the hobo sacks to different colored SAB backpacks or ANY other skin and the world would be a better place.

It’s the latter. I would agree if the basic models covered all forms of pvp or if you had the options to simply force the hobo packs back on though options. I already have a hard enough time discerning what asura are doing with the current hobo pack system from a distance.

Well yes, it identifies the class, but the majority (and it’s not made up, is really the majority) finds them unfitting. They do not match your weapon/armor unless you make something charr-ish. Also we already have the shield covering our hard earned backpack, no need for a CLASS MECHANIC to cover our acquired skins, is plain unfair.
And sure, it havenothing to do with HoT but still they are taking time to fix other things, so why not trow us a little bone and make this change already?
I would happy even for a later patch, as long as we have some words from devs

I don’t think removing it is the way to go, it does add a special feeling to the engineer , i think they could rescale it better ( make it smaller) so it doesn’t look like i’m carrying my inventory on my back.

Our main concern is that it sits on our back, covering backpacks or shields while all they should do is replace only our weapons (hence even be sheathed):
- nade/bomb/medipack belt in offhand
- bigger fuel tank for flametrower/elixirgun
- shield gear offhad for toolkit

They don’t even bother to actually make excuses, though.
They’ve just gone “We don’t have the resources” every single time they respond. First there was Colin, maybe a few months after release, going “We have to get things like spectator mode and custom arenas done first,” among other things that I can’t recall but am pretty sure have been in the game for quite some time, then there was Bill, a few months later, going “We’d like to do something, but we don’t have the resources. Here’s what we’re thinking, though,” and then the thread got ignored for…pretty sure it was a year or more. Then Gaile comes in and says, of course, “We don’t have the resources, but there’s talk of what they’d do about it if they could.”
So, they want to fix it, is the impression I’m getting, but every time they can, they get told to do something else instead. Not that this stopped them from making a Mail Carrier customization option, complete with new UI elements.
