Agreed with all you said, support the posts on the forum, on suggestions, or on the theve forums that exposes this problems, we need a lot of feedback, a lot of people saying that thieves need to be nerfed, we need to hold the line (=P), this is really unfair.

I fought 2 Thieve’s in WvW one day. Was one at a time but to counter their stealth/backstab I used Earthshaker right on myself, very effective
That is a issue that ANet will have to fix someday. Not only with thief. They need to nerf the damage to classes, skills with low risk/high reward. Someday they will do it.
im not a theif, but could you post your stats/build? if you are very glass cannon then you had it coming.
Theives, in order to deal large amounts of damage, have to sacrifice a lot of survivability, throw some aoes down and he will die.
if you are in a group, a thief can’t kill you, when trying to down you they will be killed, even with a shadow refuge stomp, have your allies rez you back up, all they can do is harrass.
A way to fix this would not be to nerf thief but to make other builds more viable, because right now that is all a thief can do well.
so tldr: get more toughness, use aoe, the thief cant kill you, only down you, thieves have to sacrifice a lot to be able to do that, the solution is not to nerf them, but to make other builds more viable for them.
In spvp it’s easier, and with more toughness thieves are not so dreadful.
And it depends on builds:
P/V/T with hammer and mace, for instance, is extremely easy to use against most thieves. You can just endure all their damage and destroy them the moment they are open for too long.
If you go glass cannon, you mostly won’t see them until it’s too late: I think smart thieves know it’s best to attack people focused in another fight. But that doesn’t happen too often.
If you find a s/d thief, though, things will be different: you won’t be facing bursts, but an evading machine. Some seemed to me almost impossible to take down 1 on 1 (at least with the build I was using).
And NinjaEd, you made a draw against a thief with a ranger? Shame on you.XD
Only redeeming chance may be if you weren’t playing a BM bunker.

This thief argument has been going on forever. Either the devs think this is fair or they are scared to nerf the damage.

in a game where damage mitigation skill / trait can negates damage to more than half or zero, heavy armor doesn’t mean much, when the toons don’t have much damage mitigation in the first place.
burst damage can pretty much kill anything in this game most instantly if taken on the face.
12k health of a warrior doesn’t carry as much weight as 12k on, say. a guardian, mesmer, thief, etc…
but warriors will be getting a pvp buff anyway.. we just have to sit nicely and wait for the dev’s to finish their job.

On the every class side of things it goes something like this:
You spot a thief and engage quickly before he stealths
He takes a couple hits then you see a poof of smoke
Then you have to roll, ability or AoE cause the BS is coming
(But it doesn’t necessarily end here)
The thief is experienced, so he also rolls/evades or just waits it out
Fight resets, your down stamina and/or cool downs
People, ever since early MMO’s have always liked to assume that beating a thief/assassin/rogue is a simple question of a certain skill threshold. The problem is that it is completely absent of the consideration that the stealth/lockdown class in question could also pass a certain skill threshold to negate those counters.
For every thread here about “how do you beat a thief with X”, there is a thread of a learned play style that accomplishes “how do you beat X with a thief”.
As a warrior, you say earthshaker at your feet. As a Thief, I may say roll through the earthshaker for the attack (or trait for the blind and ignore it entirely). But then the warrior could say trait for the attack on roll(or shout build) to counter the blind and evade the stab attempt before the AoE. And then the thief could say …etc.
Here is the gear iam using.. and the gear i have been 3 hitted in.
I whould think that 2.5 k armor + 20 k hp, whould be enough…
(edit: it only look like 18.9k on stats. but its actually 19.8 on life bottle/screen).
But it seems that Armor classes in this game are just cosmetics.
I have like 600 – 800 more armor than my elemental, wich is using light…
Now thats just plain weird.
Maybe i live in a different reality…
But i honestly think that heavy metal armors should protect a hell of a lot more than cloth.
in GW2:

In my reality, people made BIG 2 handed weapons to inflict a TON more dmg per swing…
My test against lvl 80 wolves. found in wvw. iam traited for rifle. nothing else.
my 1 hand axe. auto crits = 1.800-2.400.
my 2 hand great sword. auto crits = 1.400 – 2.000 umm… wtf… its less… ?? !! ???
my 2 hand hammer. auto crits = 2.400 – 3.100. now we are atleast on the right way…

I dunno why your posting here instead of the thief forums.
The class has been broken and left alone since launch due to devs incompetence/laziness in balancing the class. You barely touched on the multiple imbalances of the class.
You can’t chain stun a thief who knows how to abuse the class etc due to sword shadow step. It breaks stun and bypasses immobilize. It is more powerful than our 40s cool down utility skill stability..
If you want to vent your dissatisfaction go post in the 80+ page thread complaining about thieves since launch.
The class is OP and everyone knows it and all the arguments against the balance are L2P etc as are all the usual arguments by people being carried by their class -mesmers/guardians-.
I suggest you either roll a thief, post on the thief forum thread complaining about the balance or do both.
That is a issue that ANet will have to fix someday. Not only with thief. They need to nerf the damage to classes, skills with low risk/high reward. Someday they will do it.
When ESO comes out.
It can be difficult to beat a thief, as they can shadowstep everywhere, stealth and evade literally every 2 seconds and they are a huge pain to fight.
Whenever you get them low they will just stealth and reset the fight, often making it futile and a waste of time trying to fight them.
A good thief will most of the time beat a good warrior, depending on the weapons the thief uses but fortunately there aren’t that many good thieves.
Being a burst spec really helps as you do need to kill the thief in one combo otherwise they will just go invis and evade. D/D specs aren’t that tough IMO but watch out for S/D. Not only is it almost impossible to lock them, they can daze you and unleash their burst on you and you’d be done.
Thieves are capable of extremely high burst. I have 3150 armor and I remember getting hit with a 6.5K Backstab and 4K Heartseekers.
Stealth, especially the way it is implemented in this game is just so cheesy. A warrior doesn’t really have the tactful mechanic that allows them to shine if used correctly, so naturally we would be at somewhat of a disadvantage.

But you cant do crap against thief either in tank… so your just becoming a free kill.
Heavy armor should have naturaly High physical resist.
Have you ever tried to use a knife against a plate armor ?? i have, just for the fun of it.
And trust me.. i didnt even dent the kitten crap when i stabbed it or slized at it.
Heavy armor… is the totaly Anti knife armor. hell its even anti sword to some degree.
If you want a similar test.. just take a 2 mm thick metal sheet… then take a knife.. and stabb away all you like.. you never gonna hurt the metal.
Personally i been running away from zerk in wvw. At the end i had 7k hp left and some thief just did 1 heartseeker for…8k. He dindt had any stack of might and i dindt had any vul on me. If anyone of u gonna say get some toughness i added a pic.
If you encounter a thief try to swap to a hammer, just keep moving around in the most random directions and keep swinging your hammer around so you can land some hits.
You also have some cc and you can knock them back with your hammer to create some distance.

I used to run with axe + mace and hammer in wvw.
and i also had abit more hp.. like 24k. it worked against bad thieves.
(but anything works against those).
But the second i faced a good thief… i went down with ease.
I used bull charge the second i saw him to get a head start. got him to 50 % hp in the stun… then he vanished… and when he engaged again.. he was full hp and i just lost a skill for nothing..
Anyways, a few seconds later i lost hard… against his op dmg.
Thieves need to get revealed on dot dmg.
and their dmg nerfed…

Agree, heavy armor should have way more defense, like you said its like its only cosmetic, and heavy weapons should hit harder than a butter knife…. my autoattack with a dagger is more dangerous than my auto attack with my sword?, its ridiculous…
And let me say this, who would benefit from this mechanics?, what classes?, the ones that dont use heavy armor and not use heavy weapons, so basically they kitten heavy armor classes in order to buff the other ones, i will put this on the suggestions because this is really bad.

burst in general needs to be toned down in WvW. every class has the ability to 1 – 3 hit when they go full glass. it doesn’t matter how much toughness you have, if its not being stacked with Protection you are still going to be hit hard.

you probably were hit by either the phantasmal rogue, or a roamer build BS thief. i have that build on my thief and with food buff i crit even heavy armorers for 15k with backstab crits

ye, true, guardians might become realy realy annoyingly hard, since most of them are running with tank gear in wvw.
But, isnt that a guardians job in the first place ?? to be realy realy hard to kill.
But if they give heavy armor more armor.. to actually work as a heavy armor.
I think we will see more guardians in dps gear in wvw also.

Phastasm rogue is not a weak phastasm. back damge is 1.6k + damage stats and double when crits. 5-7k damage is not unusual for that phastasm and perhaps the damage is maybe more.

how ever, you first need to be able to hit something to get that chain hitting dmg…
dunno if you have a cheating program to see thru stealth… but i have no clue what so ever about where to swing, if the thief decides to play stealth and toy with you.

What if he had full zerker? There is only a 180 armor difference between thief and warrior…
Its balanced, because glass cannons are suppost to kill glass cannons, and you hit another glass cannot with a damage increase on him.
Sniper Warrior, hitting 18-25k criticals from kill shot, this playstyle was recently buffed since then.
The only funny thing is… hes not even wearing the 6% of all toughness, 4% of all vitality is extra power buff…

So you are comparing an adrenaline skill that snares you on the floor and can be avoided very easy with a skill that can 1hit kill you from stealth…

Warriors do more damage then thieves.
Axe autoattack’s 3 chain does more damage then backstab.
Whirling Wrath does more damage then backstab.Lies, not even the 3 hists of axe autoattack are the same damage of 1 single backstab, even dagger autattack does more damage, what are you doing here in this forum?, you clearly have a thief that enjoys 1 hit killing people.

You have read dozens of my posts here trying to fix the warrior, but YOU CAN SEE THE TOOLTIPS IN THE LINKS.
Backstab isn’t the 1-hit-kill attack you say it is. Its less damage then most other normal abilities.

Looks like you just hit a warrior, judging by what you stole.
What if:
He had frenzy, taking another 25% damage?
What if he had full zerker? There is only a 180 armor difference between thief and warrior…
Its balanced, because glass cannons are suppost to kill glass cannons, and you hit another glass cannot with a damage increase on him.
Sniper Warrior, hitting 18-25k criticals from kill shot.

I have seen that video before and its clearly wvw, in pvp you are not going to do that damage, but thieves can, and you cant see it coming, if they fail they will just try again, if you manage to lower their health then they will run stealth and reset the fight, it dosent matter how you look at it, its not fair.
