Current Issues:
There is currently an issue where completing certain story steps as part of a group can change the path of your character’s story if you are not the story owner.

While we’re still working on identifying the underlying issue , we do know that the bug is triggered by players completing story missions as a group that include making a big decision or completing story missions as part of a group that check for the decisions you’ve made.

We will continue investigating this bug, but in the meantime, if you want to play it safe and lower the chances of running into this while doing group story, here are the quests you should complete solo (these are the story steps we’re aware of; there may be others).

Chapter 5

  • Skritt
    • Set to Blow
  • Ogre
    • The Lost Chieftain’s Return
  • Grawl
    • Attempted Deicide
  • Quaggan
    • Evacuation
  • Hylek
    • Unholy Grounds

Chapter 7

  • Forging the Pact: [3/13 update] The bug causing this issue has a different cause than the other ones listed. We are working on a potential fix for this issue to prevent other players from encountering it.
  • The Battle of Fort Trinity

Unfortunately, if you’ve already run into one of these issues, we cannot reset your progress or change your existing story path.

The problem is that there is literally no difference between a character who intentionally picked the Vigil and one who got sent there by the bug, so there’s simply no way to automatically fix affected characters. Our CS team does not have the ability to change your current quest or order, either, so it’s not something that we can manually fix on a case by case basis, either.

We will continue to monitor and update this thread as information comes in and changes are made. We apologize for the to those affected by this bug, and thank you for your patience and understanding while we work to resolve these issues.

Past/resolved issues:

  • Initial bug: Players skipped 18 levels of personal story content after completing “Kellach’s Attack” in a group.
  • Resolution: Affected players were reset back to the personal story step they were on before the skipped content.
  • Initial bug: Players who completed the story step where an order is chosen as part of a group ended up as part of the Vigil by default.
  • Resolution: This cause behind this issue was fixed in the 10/22 patch; it should not reoccur. Unfortunately, we have no way to retroactively fix this for players who have already been affected for the same reason we cannot fix the other issues listed in this thread.

I recently replied to a post regarding “Forging the Pact” in the Personal Story forum, where my gf and I both got the wrong quest line after picking “fear of being dishonored”. We have been playing together since level 1 and it’s our first time playing through the game. Just to make something clear right away, the only reason why we started playing was because we could play together, but apparently we get punished for it and the game prevents us from doing so?

Up until this point neither one of us had any complaints about the game and enjoyed it a lot. I find it extremely unfair that nothing can be done about this issue, maybe we would have known about this if it wasn’t our first characters. Basically now we need to do each others separate paths together, instead of being able to explore new options on our next characters.

We thought we would just complete zones and then continue the story after we got set back on the correct paths. We accepted the fact we would probably be 80 by the time we got to continue the story. What a joke. If absolutely nothing can be done about this, is there any information about when our stories will meet back up? I find it completely ridiculous that out of the 3 options from “Forging the Pact”, we ended up on different paths, and neither one of us even got on the actual path we chose! We thought WoW was glitchy… but all of their glitches combined don’t even compare to this. We would rather be able to play together and deal with all of that than be forced into separate quest chains.

And here I was talking about how the questing system on GW2 is so much better than WoW…

Hello, for reference, I previously posted about the Forging the Pact bug here , here , and here . Since the question in my last post was not answered, and is related to the topic, I thought it would be appropriate to post once more in this new thread as the Forging the Pact bug has finally been formally acknowledged:

Would the ‘fear’ choice I originally made in A Light in the Darkness still be saved in my character data, showing that my affected character is indeed being presented with the wrong story step based on that data? If that is the case, wouldn’t it be possible to error correct the level 64 story step based on that saved data?

The character affected has exotics and ascended gear, so you must understand that I am reluctant to delete it and start over from scratch. Also, carrying on with the bugged, unchosen story is also not an option for me, as it would no longer be ‘my’ character.

I can completely understand not being willing to fix a mistake made by the user, but this error was not of my doing; I was simply progressing in good faith that the systems in place worked as advertised.

If the answer to my question above is a no, then I sincerely hope that tools will eventually be put in place to remedy the victims of this unfortunate occurrence.

Just to follow up on what trickfred has said:

I posted in the old thread, and I’ll include this again.

On my main character (Human female Priory Guardian), I chose “Letting an innocent die” as my fear. I have never played any of my Personal Story missions on this character with any other player. I completed Tower Down, Munition Acquisition and Breaking the Bone Ship correctly.

My Battle for Fort Trinity was bugged, though I didn’t realise it until afterwards, and put me onto the “Making another suffer” path, as at the start, Trahaerne referred to the Orb as having be acquired by me. At the time I thought this was just a writing error, but having completed Battle for Fort Trinity, my next step is Liberating Apatia.

I haven’t completed this step (since it bugged a few days after launch), and would very much like it to be fixed, though at this point I’ve pretty much given up hope.

What puzzles me most is that apparently the game can’t detect that Liberating Apatia isn’t on the “Letting an innocent die” story line.

I actually submitted a ticket about this very issue, but.

I was playing with my friend today, and we were both at the story step Forging the Pact. I had previously chosen the fear of getting dishonored, while she had the fear of letting an innocent die. She was the owner of the instance, and it all went well until the completion of the step…

Well, I clicked the “progress to next story”, not thinking to check the story’s name or asking my friend what fear she had picked, and thinking the game would be able to read my previous choices because up until this point, it always has. Well no such luck. Now I’m stuck going through the wrong story.

I’m completely with tirckfred, here; it’s understandable that no option to reverse stories is given to the players, but in cases like these where the mistake is not the player’s but the developers’, couldn’t you access the individual game data and set the story right or something? I’m not a programmer, and I understand the need for sufficient evidence, but just telling us “sorry, there’s nothing we can do, your loss” seems kind of bold. Are there at least plans of implementing some sort of mechanism that allows you to fix problems like these?

My issue isn’t as major as the one’s above, it is actually quite a simple one. It is from a level 66 personal story, i don’t really remember the name but, it had something to do with extracting soldiers somewhere in Mount Maelstrom. One of the lines at the end of this mission was not put correctly. I will post a screenshot of it later.

I was playing the last story with 3 Guildies yesterday who were also at the Zhaitan step. After the dungeon we ported to Fort Trinity and a friend opened her celebration step. She skipped all videos and left right after everything was done. I didn’t mind because I wanted to come back later to watch everything in peace. However, after I was kicked out of the instance (not mine, but hers), I didn’t get the dialogue whether to accept the story progression but just got handed my rewards (outside in the open world) and the story disappeared.
I enjoyed playing my story a lot and now I never got to see the ending. That makes me very sad. Could we please just have the option to replay any story step without rewards just to rewatch the story steps. That would resolve this issue.

My girlfriend and I were doing the questline “Making another suffer”, we got to “The battle for fort trinity” and then instead of getting “Liberating Apatia”, we got the “A sad duty” quest.

So its a complete jump from Making another suffer to Letting an innocent die. Sucks big time.

x2 on the replay option, minus the rewards. This kinda messed up our playtrough :/

So i joined the order of whispers and half way through the helping the grawl quests i suddenly get sieren as mentor.
I just followed it like it was a bug but after finishing the quest line i got the durmand priory followup “on red alert” instead of “suspicious activity” from the order.

Any way to get this sorted?

So

Here it is September 2013, and this happened to me due to playing "The Lost Chieftain’s Return" with a friend. The character I was on was Whispers, and his was Vigil. I wasn’t even aware this was still a bug. I am guessing it never got fixed, despite this thread being un-stickied.

Still no way to put a character back on track? No means to alter a flag or whatever that points to "Forewarned is Forearmed" and stick it back to "Suspicious Activity"?

Will I still be able to purchase Whispers armor for this character? I suppose, as I’ve seen all of the story paths on other characters and what with the Pact story taking over soon, it’s not the end of the world if I still am technically a Whispers member just wandering off into Vigil quests.

Thank you.

I believe the word that was intended to be used was “infrequency”, and not “frequency”.

I’ve seen many dev responses making this note of the thread being un-stickied with the same copy/paste response stating this. However, the entire comment relays the wrong message as for why the thread is being un-stickied.

Un-stickying this thread due to the frequency of posts would imply the thread was being un-stickied due to it still receiving a consistent and high volume of posts relating to this ongoing issue…which is highly illogical as that would mean that the thread still being stickied was serving its purpose by directing all of the reports on the issue to where they should be reported at, and removing it from sticky-status would cause the reports of this issue to no longer be reported here, where they should be, and that the issue is still an issue.

Now, un-stickying this thread due to “infrequency” of posts would mean that the issue does not seem to be an issue any longer due to the infrequency of new posts on the matter. Infrequent posts on the subject in this thread would warrant it being un-stickied and is logical, as why continue having a thread stickied if the issue it was stickied to address is no longer an issue.
