64-bit Client Beta FAQ
I also can’t get Overwolf (anything that worked fine with the 32-bit client) to work right in the 64-bit client. It doesn’t lay over the game. I don’t know if it’s GW2’s fault or Overwolf’s.
I’m running both versions with the same settings, Windowed Fullscreen
EDIT: This seems to be Overwolf not having the 64-bit client on the game list. I’m attempting a rough edit of the gamelist file (always make back-ups first!) and will post in a separate thread if it works.
Edit2: The fix is here

Rename gw2-64.exe to gw2.exe
You can rename the old 32-bit version before to something else to have a backup.

Except I intend to keep both, until it’s out of beta at least.

You and I pretty much have the same computer. Good game! I have an SSD as well, but couldn’t fit it in sig. Maybe I can try and squeeze it in.
MSI GTX 1080 Sea Hawk EK X 2xSLI 2025 / 11016 MHz, liquid cooling custom loop.
Samsung 850 Evo 500 GB. HTC Vive.
Despite no official Linux support, I’d like to say thanks to ANet for this 64bit version. The game on my Linux system runs smoother than the 32bit one and it eliminated the need for me to reduce all settings to low to prevent crashes during large events.
I’ve just tested Tequatl with medium-high settings and the game maintained a solid 15-20+ fps with no crashes. Normal maps and dungeons are around 50-60+ fps (uncapped goes up to 80-100 depending on the area).
5/5 It was definitely a much needed update for this game.
Hello!
I just want to tell that 64bit client is good in performance BUT!
I have noticed a small thing that really disturbs me.
In 32Bit client the text on stuff like Npc name and peoples names are clear.
But in 64Bit client its a bit blurry and i have on same settings as 32bit.
I have latest drivers for my graphics card and monitor,
Im useing Nvidia GTX 680 4Gb and monitor is Asus VG248QE 24
Thanks in forward!
Yup nice setup and total overkill for this game lol. But I’ve been trying a few things to reduce the chugs/freezes without much luck. For example, I usually just run a fixed 1024mb page file but I have tried 16gb, none and system managed with no change (system managed being the worst for smoothness). I think its something they will have to work on and i am glad I am not alone in experiencing it. At least no crashes, ever, even with my crazy settings. They are insta-crash on karka and teq on the 32bit client
Tried the 64bit client soon as it was up.
Didn’t really notice any performance improvement.
4 second screen freeze only during world boss fights and normally happens shortly after i get the message about server hiding pets and other players on screen. It will only happen once.
Went back to the 32bit client with no issues what so ever.
I’ll try any updated 64bit clients when they are available.
I might even do a clean 64bit client install.
I used the 64 bit client yesterday just fine, and now when I’m starting it up there is a huge download, it says there are 338,932 files to download; however, the 32 bit client loads just fine with no download. I’m not sure what is going on, I even deleted and re-downloaded the client, but it keeps trying to download this huge file. Is anyone else experiencing this?

I’ve been having this issue too – checked it with another character’s story to see if it was all instances or just the Pale Tree. So far…just the Tree.
Thank you Anet!!!
I had no issues w/getting up and running on the 64-bit client, copied the .exe to the game folder, ran it, game downloaded/updated a few files and boom – I’m in.
I noticed 3 things (and I run vanilla gw2, no overlay or “gem” programs):
-slightly faster map load times, especially in HoT and LA
-no OOM crashes (yet…) and use of 3-5 gigs of ram use per task manager
-slightly faster FPS

Your not putting the 64bit client in the right place, if it’s not in your GW2 directory it will download the whole game again.
It needs putting into your GW2 directory with your Gw2.exe file and the Gw2.dat file.
Or create a new directory and move the Gw2.dat file and the Gw2-64.exe client into it.
You should have a small download when you run the 64bit client for the first time.
On the positive, I love that I don’t crash when the game uses over 2GB of RAM anymore.. on the negative.. this client has some pretty serious memory leaks, and I only have 8GB of RAM
I end up having to close and restart the client every so often to free up resources anyway.
Well i managed to fix my chug/freeze problem that happened every hour .. after spending a few days talking with dev’s after opening a ticket, and trying multiple things like, the repair tool for gw2, and deleting caches and stuff, which I am eternally thankful for, they really are the best at getting back and wanting to help.
The one thing that sorted it out, I moved back to windows 7. As I upgraded to 10 before hand (if you have as well, might work for you to downgrade, as win10 is still in it’s early form). gw2 and win10 don’t seem to like each other on my rig.
So I’m now happily running gw2 on win7 on the 64 bit client, no problems at all, no crashes or freezes and all running at 60 fps (35-45 fps in large groups).
Hope that helps

64-Bit has nothing to do with performance improvemt, it can even be a little slower
since all the pointers now have twice the length than under 32-Bit.
The only reason is that it can address much more memory, 4 TB instead of the
4 GB max with 32-Bit programms. However this can also now lead to the fact
that Windows makes usage of the swap file if it runs out of physical RAM.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.
Downloaded fine and worked fine, until I actually tried to play a little. Within 10 minutes my machine was giving me warnings about using up all the memory – not a crash like with the 32bit client, just a friendly warning of “stuff gonna be shut down real soon”. I’m on 8gb, and while I appreciate some of that goes towards running the OS etc, the 64bit client was eating up every single last bit of RAM that was available to it, really really fast.
Perhaps it is just a different manifestation of the memory leak problem? Kinda sucks. 32bit client still crashes out the end of most big meta events, making it real difficult to even want to play them.
So, other than what I have already noted as issues everything had been going great with the 64-bit client.
Now just about to the second, every 2 minutes there is about a 4-5 second hick up where everything pauses and then catches up in fast motion. Have the hardware requirements changed any for the 64-bit client?

I could not find anything about this posted in this thread, if so please direct mt to the link…
My computer crashed (unrelated to GW2) an I reinstalled operating system from scratch. I am running Windows10 now and decided to install the 64 bit client from the website to have a fresh install. The download, install, and update process finished.
I wanted to put the program exe shortcut on my desktop for easy access. the only Gw2 files I could find are the ones I could find were in the Download folder:
GW2.dat
GW2.tmp
GW2-64.exe
GW2-64.tmp
I guess I was expecting it create a Guild Wars folder under Programs (64bit) and place more files.
The game is running slow even after adjusting the video settings (I have played other games and they run fine). Should I have installed the original disk and then moved the 64 bit files over?
Any suggestions?
ChuyDog.7634
It’s the same Gw2.dat file for the 32 and 64 bit client, you can forget about the other files.
So in a directory (Directory name unimportant, I put mine on drive C) you should have Gw2.exe (If you want to keep the 32bit client) the .dat file, and the Gw2-64.exe.
Make sure you run the Gw2-64.exe client, or your shortcut points to that file.
You will have a small download when you run the 64bit client for the first time.
I renamed my Gw2.exe file Gw2.bak so I couldn’t run it by mistake.

At least stick it in a folder and not the root.
RIP City of Heroes
Why do I have to re-download the 64 bit client every time I open it? I closed the game, and upon reopening it, it wants me to re-do the entire download.
Im not waiting another 4 hours for it to download. No.
I have noticed the weird “chugs” here and there as well but never any crashes which is great. Seems like it doing some weird memory dump or something. All drivers are the latest available and sys is no slouch
4790k/z97/16gb/ssd/980tiI have exactly the same issue, the game “freezes” for like 1-3 secs and then runs smooth again, just like OP, i think its when the memory is dumped (Happens every once in a while, approx same time i would have crashed on the 32bit client + half an hour).
My gaming rig is almost the same 4790k/z97/16gb/ssd raid0/970OC
Getting these “freezes” as well.
I had my task manager open on the last one and noticed my CPU usage spike up to 100% during the freeze then back down into normal levels. My CPU is an I7-3770 3.4Ghz and I don’t get these freezes in the 32bit client.

Look at your memory usage .. and if you don’t have kitten listen to your harddisk.
With 64-bit client we now have more addressable memory than what our systems
have, and so virtuell memory will maybe be used again. However i’m not sure
how exactly Windows handles that, since 16 GB ram should normally not run
full, but with 8GB it can happen.

Does the 64-bit client update automatically as they change it? I’m assuming it does and that I do not have to periodically download “the latest version.”

Yes it does. and even if you rename it to gw2.exe it will be updated with the new
64-bit version and not replaced by an updated 32-bit version.

During play sessions i get a few times huge fps spikes/lag/stutter that lasts for max 10 secs. If i am listening to anything in the background like utube it also stutters the sound while this lasts. This can happen at anytime, tho mostlikely in graphical intensive encounters, usually once per pvp match which results in me dying.
Is there a way to troubleshoot this? Gfx to alter in settings? It all happened after i started using the 64bit client, and ive always ran all gfx settings on max prior just fine.
Win 10, i7 3770k, SSD, gfx 680, msi 1155, 16 gb ram
If i were to go bk to 32bit client i would start crashing again, compared to the short unplayable stutter now.
I used to be a power ranger, now not sure anymore

Because your not putting the Gw2-64.exe client in the same directory as the original Gw2.exe and Gw2.dat file.
Either move the 64bit client to where the Gw2.dat file is or move the Gw2.dat file to where the 64bit client is.
It should look something like this…
Directory i.e
C:\Guild_Wars
(Files in directory)
Gw2-64.exe
Gw2.dat (Big file)
Gw2.exe (Not really needed)
(There will be a small download the first time you run the 64 bit client).

I just wanted to thank Anet for releasing this 64-bit client, it has been a “lifesaver” for me. The game would crash frequently in WvW when zergs were fighting (very frustrating when you had to requeue and wait for another 30-60 minutes to get back in), and after HoT it would crash almost constantly, making WvW virtually unplayable.
I’ve had no issues with the 64-bit client so far (1). It uses up to 6 GB in WvW with no hiccups at all (I’m using maximum graphics settings at 2560 × 1440), while the 32-bit client would crash or become unstable whenever it exceeded 2 GB. My only gripe is that I wish this client had been available about a year ago when my WvW problems really started to become more frequent
(1) The only issue was not the client’s fault: I had Bitdefender Antivirus 2016 installed (just a trial version), and it would refuse the 64-bit client to start (32-bit version worked fine, though). This happened even though the firewall and real-time antivirus modules were disabled. My solution was simple: I uninstalled the trial version and will look for another AV solution.
BTW, some people here have tried the 64-bit client and said that they saw no performance improvements. I think they misunderstand the main purpose of this client: It’s an alternative for those people who experience crashes due to out-of-memory issues (people who use high graphics settings or other memory hungry settings). If your 32-bit client runs just fine, then stick to it (although you might consider using the 64-bit client anyway, since it’s more “future-proof”: If future updates/expansions consume more memory, your stable 32-bit client might become unstable later on).

Everything else was normal. Memory was still not being hit too hard but the CPU spiked. I should add I am on Windows 10 since it seems some people that have had the same issues were on 10 as well. I am running with 16 GB of ram also and I am not noticing it spike up in usage.
sigh
64 bit client stopped my computer crashes for about a week, but now straight back to Machine_Check_Error blue screens, I’m so tired of this. I’ve tried everything, this computer’s only 2 months old I just want to be able to play my game.
And all support ever does is advice me to do the same steps I’ve done several times before already and told them I had.

Its a problem with your hardware. Enduser programs can’t generate Bluescreens
they are mostly related to hardware or driver problems.
A Machine Check Exception (MCE) is a type of computer hardware error that occurs when a computer’s central processing unit detects a hardware problem.
Microsoft Windows displays the error using the blue screen of death containing the error message (the parameters inside the brackets vary):1
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine-check_exception
STOP: 0×0000009C (0×00000004, 0×00000000, 0xB2000000, 0×00020151) “MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION”
On Linux, a process (such as klogd2) writes a message to the kernel log and/or the console screen (usually only to the console when the error is non-recoverable and the machine crashes as a result):
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.
Not running on a laptop. Single video card. Windows7 64bit w/ SP1.
Both client versions in the same directory. 32 bit client is playable, but crashes often. 64 bit client will load, login, but hit play and error out:
“Unable to initialize 3D output. Please verify that you have installed DirectX 9 and an updated video driver.”
Attempted 64bit client after each step, but same error every time.
Latest version of drivers on Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti. Reboot.
Installed DirectX 9. (Already had DirectX 11 installed, no mod to DX11) Reboot.
Deleted all 64 bit folders and files. Reboot. Redownloaded 64 bit client. Reboot.
Nvidia Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings. Confirmed GW2 was listed. Specifically added the GW2 64 bit client to the list. Reboot.
Run 64 bit client as administrator.
Renamed Gw2-64.exe to Gw2.exe

I am using the 64-bit beta launcher and have already tried repairing the game to no benefit.
The 32-bit launcher, however, loads in without issue.
(edited by Llethander.3972)
I updated to the latest “November Update” for Win 10 today and now my 64 bit client will not work. Worked great yesterday now, I can load the client and log in. When I hit “play” the client goes away and the game will not load. I redownloaded the 64 bit client but the same thing happens. The 32 bit client works though. I may see if I can uninstall the windows update to see if that fixes it.
-Zero crashes pre-HoT. Okay, maybe four in three years.
-Thousands of crashes at HoT launch. Quite a few nasty bluescreens (poor computer…). Updated video card drivers and cut the crashes down to 1 or 2 per hour. Only one bluescreen since.
-Read up on crashes and assumed that my hourly crashes may have been due to memory or something else; subsequently I found and tried out the 64-bit client. That raised me to ~6 crashes per hour.
Haven’t really changed my windows setup since running pre-HoT flawlessly; what’s going on, exactly? Computer’s clean; I keep a very neat system tray and process pool, and I never let junk like Norton near my computer. Only thing I can think of that might be messing with things is the SLI build, but that would be manifesting in a stutter issue rather than hourly crashes. Everything runs butter-smooth (even in zergs) and cool (a little lukewarm during zergs) until crashes. Crashes do appear to occur more often during large events/bosses, but I have had them happen when I’m completely alone in vanilla maps as well. Thus I decided that it’d have to be a memory leak, which is why I tried out the 64-bit client. But more crashes than 32-bit? (I know what beta means, and wouldn’t have questioned old client if it wasn’t crashing regularly; however, the 64-bit client crashes a good 300% more often.)
There’s very little in GW2 that even tries to graphically or processorly or memorily challenge my PC, so I don’t get why I can’t run the game anymore with either client… =/

@Swift: have you tried stresstesting your ram? It’s worth a shot imho.
Bump. Anyone else experiencing this, tips? They still going strong
I used to be a power ranger, now not sure anymore

This is the same as what I’ve been dealing with. I haven’t found any way around it.

Bump. Anyone else experiencing this, tips? They still going strong
Both me and my girlfriend are experiencing these ‘freezes’ as well. They usually only last a second or three tops.
My setup: W10 64 bit pro 4670K AMD 7950, SSD, 8GB ram
Her setup: W10 64 bit pro 3570K GTX 970, SSD, 8GB ram
Looking at other replies it seems it has something to do with the way Gw2 interacts with W10. At any rate it would be cool if it could be fixed
Is there a way to verify you are using the 64 bit version?
Is there a way to verify you are using the 64 bit version?
Open the task manager and watch the memory values for the GW2 task. If it goes over around 3.5gb (3500mb) or so then you’re using the 64 bit launcher.

Rename the Gw2.exe to Gw2.bak
Then you can only run the 64bit client.
And you will see the Gw2-64.exe client running in task manager which will be using some percentage of your CPU.

Task bar effects: My laptop only has 4 GB of RAM, but I decided to try the 64-bit client just to see if I could spot any differences in performance or behavior. The only difference I’ve noticed is that, when using the 64-bit client, my Windows task bar does not bug out. (After playing Guild Wars 2 with the 32-bit client, the task bar acts as if the mouse is always hovering over it, highlighting icons and displaying tooltips when in fact the mouse is not near the task bar.)
I have not tried the 64-bit client with the single most FPS eating event in the game (in my experience), Frozen Maw, yet.
Concerning lag spikes: The game would occasionally freeze while playing on the 32-bit client on my laptop with 4 GB of RAM. After some investigation, I discovered that the freezing occurred whenever Chrome was updating itself and whenever Windows Update would automatically start checking for updates, both of which use a considerable portion of my memory. Closing Chrome and (not recommended) disabling Windows Update solved the issue for me. (This is not feedback on the 64-bit client, and I only include it for the sake of those who report here getting lag spikes on both 32-bit and 64-bit clients, as a possible source.)
I programmed somehow (finally got it to work after months of trying) managed to make super special keys on my mouse to do a skill in game (like the toggle scroll on /off). Those buttons are not recognized by gw2 itself.
Now the problem: 64 bit they don’t work. Re-opening 32 bit works fine… It was way to hard to setup to now just copy to 64 bit, the software also doesn’t give an option to copy past or change the allocation. I tried a lot of combinations, but didnt managed to get it right
Any advice? This is very annoying as my elite skills and nr 7 skill are not only usefull by clicking.
Update: You cannot change the map folder but you can add/remove games, by choosing their .exe file. Wich is how I added 64 bit exe-file. Now both clients work. This spared a lot of work, cause setting up the keybypass structure to make mouse buttons ingame work that are not recognized by gw2 is very complex. I didn’t wanna do it again.
No excuse anymore for not giving ‘hide mounts’-option
No thanks to unidentified weapons.

Try Xpadder
A couple of fixes went out with today’s build:
- The crash that happens immediately upon launching the client (error code c000001d) should no longer happen.
- The crash in the “A Light in the Darkness” story mission should be fixed.
We’re also working with nVidia to get the SLI profile and Optimus properly configured.
Not sure if this question has been asked, but I can’t find it in the FAQ (or if it is in the FAQ, the answer wasn’t clear), will the 64-bit client update itself, or will I have to download it everytime there is an update for it? I’m assuming the former, but I’m just checking.
It updates itself, just like the 32-bit client does.
Has anyone figured out the greyed out Hi-res textures checkbox? My system doesn’t have it greyed out. Nvidia GeForce GTX 980, Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1 here. Could that be related to the reported blurriness? Or that sounds more like Anti-aliasing settings issues?
It is a CPU feature that is not being identified correctly. There is no workaround besides switching CPU as it’s tied to hardware. It will be fixed in a future build.
It makes me do it too if I select the 64-exe. The only way I figured out how to do it without re-downloading was to drag the 64-exe over the 32-exe in the gw2 folder. There has got to be a way to make this automatic.
It will be made automatic before leaving beta.
I’m having the same issure and I will provide the screenshots.
After logging in, I could immediately see the difference between the clients, but…
On these screenshots, there is no noticeable difference:
32bit test
64bit testThe problem is that the screenshots are both crystal clear. So I had to play in windowed mode to show the difference!
32bit windowed
64bit windowed
This animation is great! Thanks a ton!
Downloaded 64Bit client this afternoon and have been seeing some nice increases in FPS, without stuttering and load times reduction for sure.. but at the expense of having massive screen colour blooms randomly shooting out at me.. making it pretty much unplayable at times (and getting more frequent).
Whoa, that screenshot is interesting to say the least. Not really sure what could cause this, but we’ll sure investigate. Thanks for the report!
have many crash since yesterday, like the client have lost the connection with the server, major lag more than 30sec…. at many place around the world but the bigger place for the lag/disconnect is in lion arch or in big map. error connection i have for this one is code =7:11:3:191:101
