Anet should at least give us something useful in compensation!
Maybe some Gems or Birthday Booster or so.

or a client that doesn’t crash and makes you feel like your computer is completely crap

Anet should fix the client AND give us something useful in compensation!

Are we going to see some update to the wrapper or are you going to continue with the silent treatment?

From the amount of replies they gave on other threads and completely ignored this one, it only seems like they are ignoring us. A thread with over 100 replies is not something to let it slide.

The only time i was able to play gw2 with a stable fps was when i got tired of being ignored or given empty superficial advise from ANet and went surfing on the internet for tweaks (which are nearly impossible to find as most of the threads date back from 2012).

Still after I purchased and activated HoT expansion yesterday, for some reason my game was unable to go back to its stability and now its fps oscillates from 10 fps to 25

And still only 1 dev reply, I unrest and you guys are working on all bugs and issues running on the game and its expansion….but how about dedicating just a small fraction of your team to working on the Mac cause….I don’t think it’s that hard considering we have all payed for it.

I just got a brand new iMac 5k Retina. When I first logged into GW2 character select on it, I thought it was gorgeous. Then upon logging in, it immediately crashed. I had to turn my resolution settings down to less than half of what they should be to run the game at all, and it still crashed about every half hour. That was a month or so ago.

When I updated and attempted a log-in today, I was dismayed to find that my characters are freaking out on the character select screen. I haven’t even attempted a full log in.

I can’t even begin to say how disappointing this is. I play WoW on this computer, and it runs beautifully. I realize that they are a much larger company with a lot more money, but dude, it doesn’t even begin to compare. I can actually play that game. This game is just wasting my time.

I wish I could actually enjoy time playing GW2 because I have friends that play this game, and not WoW. I would LOVE to play more with them. But having them stop and wait for me every time it crashes? That gets old fast.

So, in short, I’m just putting another call out there for the GW2 team to fix this crap.

Uh, they did. It was called Transgaming with the product Cider. Transgaming sold cider now, to Nvidia. So who knows what is going on.

I obviously meant a native client, not an excuse to take our money.

Anyways, i just saw this post and got really upset https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/heads-up-iteration-incoming/

They didn’t mention anything about our client or tweaks to it, and in their words “We’ve had an incredibly smooth launch with very few major game issues”. I’d love to see ANet staff play on their mac client and tell me that the game runs smooth

They’re not doing a native client nor did they ever promise one. Many many games used Cider to port. Some are horrendously bad. Some are pretty good. Others fall into the middle area. On top of that you have the problems of an MMO in active development trying to redo large chunks of their game engine (EVE Online is another example of a mac client in a similar spot).

I’m not defending ArenaNet’s behavior. Far from it. But we really need to have realistic expectations. My realistic expectation used to be ArenaNet communicating how they were progressing with the Mac beta. I no longer have that expectation. I doubt they’ll ever effectively communicate anything to us and the game client will continue the pattern of slow degradation with occasional improvements due to them fixing issues that overlap with Windows bugs. They’ll maybe fix things like the Mac Guild Treasury UI too (lol, who am I kidding, it isn’t connected to the gem store UI so they don’t care).

My new reasonable expectation is that they rename the client. Call it Hobby. Remove beta from the title. Call it a meat popsicle. I don’t really care. This isn’t a beta and never has been a beta. I’d appreciate it if they were at least honest with that part.

This all I ask. That Anet just be honest about this client. They need to just say what can or can not fix. If this is something they can not do real then need to just say so instead of tease Mac customer for 3 year about how they support. Talk several time about how they have Mac specialist that disappear. Anet also need to update this page with real info to be honest to Mac customer that could buy GW2.

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/announcing-guild-wars-2-for-mac-beta/

They need to change it say Mac beta client have many problem and will not work so good and if want good use bootcamp. They should just be honest because now they just tell lies on that page and to Mac customer.

I think most Mac customer would be more happy if Anet just be honest and say where they are with Mac client and not generic message we work on it that we hear for 3 year. If they can not fix then they need to say and get over with. As is now they sell broken product to Mac customer. Only time they ever fix a Mac beta problem fast with good communication was that time Mac customer could not buy gem or use gem store and they fix that in a week. Strange.

Maybe Anet should disable gem store for Mac customer so Mac customer can not give them more money for broken client.

;)

When a company sells you an unfinished product they have the obligation to fix it.
It’s not about expectations but about being tired of not being taken serious.
A client with a beta stamp for 3 years is not taking their fan base seriously.
Announce a Mac client, sell it for the same price the windows client, and not mention in their advertisement that they are basically scamming you, is not being taken seriously.

If they put in their advertisement 3 years ago “Guild wars 2 is now on mac, though a very poorly designed wrapper, not an actual client, but anyways pay us full price and receive no support whatsoever!!!” none of us would have the right to complain.

Anet also need to update this page with real info to be honest to Mac customer that could buy GW2.

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/announcing-guild-wars-2-for-mac-beta/

That is a news announcement article from three years ago. They’re under no obligation to do anything with that or change it. There are plenty of news articles they’ve made that are no longer relevant. Should they retroactively go back and write on all the Living Story Season 1 announcements that ‘this event is no longer playable’? Of course not. It is a dated news article… It is still there as a reference, it’s not something they can be held to.

Not that that excuses their lack of support or acknowledgement of issues. But trying to hold three year old articles against them is ridiculous. That’s like trying to hold the original manifesto against them. Things change.

If you Google Guild Wars 2 for Mac that article first thing you see. Customer that may think about GW2 and google to see if it is for Mac find this article. They see how Anet say how great it is and how Anet staff love to play on Mac and how it work better when final version.

Yes they need to change this page. Or make new article with truth then. It is the only page they have about Mac client so still relevant not like you other example where they post other update about game when thing change. Anet never post any update article about Mac client.

Maybe I should make blog page truth of GW2 for Mac if my english was better.

I use google keyword tool and here is search volume to show and that article is first result for each term. Use September number with lowest guess that is about 150 people day see if GW2 is for Mac. People that search that obvious see if GW2 is for Mac because they think about buying game if it work on Mac. When they do first thing they see is Anet article. So if out of date Anet should remove, make new one about Mac client or update with honest information for Mac customer.

Yeah, I actually noticed that a couple weeks back. It is pretty funny that the top hits for Guild Wars 2 on mac is that original announcement and I think some posts on macrumors.com maybe. Then again, ArenaNet has never been particularly savvy at managing their brand online, relatively speaking.

And WesleySnipes.3917, I’m not saying don’t complain. I’m saying you might enjoy yourself more if you reset your expectations. We can’t even expect them to have a relatively stable Cider client, people demanding a native client are just setting themselves up for massive disappointment.

I get what you mean. Honestly my native client hopes were crushed ages ago. out of the 3 years i have the game i never played a complete year without a break, just because i couldnt take it anymore.
My hopes were ressurected with the announcement of an expansion. i thought "oh well, 3 years is enough time for a company to make a game so they probably tweaked the wrapper at least.

I’m so naive. lol
All i ask is for stable frame rate. If you want to torture a gamer, all you have to do is make his fps oscillate from 10 to 30 at the worst setting possible, which is our case.

I think part of the problem is that there is very little they can do to tweak the wrapper to make the game run better. Cider was coded by transgaming and then licensed out to other companies. I don’t imagine that the GW2 dev team have an amazing understanding of cider’s coding and it’s probably difficult for them to work out the flaws in someone else’s software. Obviously if you’re going to use something like cider to offer your game to mac players then you really should understand how it works and be able to provide support and fixes. But it seems like they really don’t…

Anet sure work fast and communicate a lot on forum and work with TransGaming when that bug would not let Mac player buy gem or use gem store some time ago. They fix it in about 1 week.

I agree though we do not know what happen with TransGaming since Nvidia buy them.

The gem store is a website that is rendered by the game (or at least that was how it worked back then), so the reason it didn’t work properly was something they could fix, because it wasn’t actually an issue with cider, it was just the way chromium was working with OSX.

If was not part of cider why was there “TGupdate” download pop up that download before game patch for fix of gem store problem since that not part of cider port? I remember this problem and when it was fix there was a TGupdate that ran before the client patch. Mac customer can always tell when there is update to cider because TGupdate run first before normal game start patch. Sad this has not happen in a long time.

Still they work on that fast as can and communicate in forum why they fix. They do not communicate good for the rest Mac client since. I do not no why you want to defend anet so much with way they treat Mac customer because what they do is bad, very bad. Even you say this in some other posts. I am confuse because you say Anet is good some time about Mac client then also say bad. Do not know if you agree with Anet or not on how they treat Mac customer. You also ignore my post about the GW2 Mac page where I say they need to remove or change and show about that.

Truth Anet treat Mac customer like trash and do not tell Mac customer honest news about client. They say how they like mac client. They say we have new Mac specialist to help and that person disappear. Anet hide behind this beta tag and do not say what is Mac client and do not communicate with customer honest. Anet should have shame the way they do with Mac client. Can you argue that?

I would make blog about truth for Guild Wars 2 for Mac if my english not so bad. I would make it hope that when person search for GW2 for Mac they see truth first before Anet page of lie about Mac client.

Here are some past thread I found.

Look how fast respond and attention to not able to buy gem problem. Many red post in thread.

Right the only way I’ve been able not to crash in Maguuma at the moment seems to be on lowest graphics, i didn’t buy this game on my 2014 iMac to play it on lowest graphics, I tried higher just to crash like before. so if you don’t mind the view low graphics seems to help but it does make the game look awful. Believe me, I know all about how to mitigate the crashing (see my previous posts in this thread, in fact).

Setting everything to lowest only gains me like 15 more minutes before a crash max so I don’t even bother. Frankly, the thing that is forcing me to boot into Windows at the moment is how the Guild Treasury UI is busted more than the crashing.

Edit: Well the latest patch apparently fixed the problem. I can’t tell because just before the patch I logged in on the Windows client because I was depositing some stuff to the guild treasury.

Hello,

We know the Cider wrapper isn’t the greatest. One of the reasons we don’t tend to respond to a lot of Mac specific posts is because an overwhelming majority of them are shared with Windows users. I do want to assure you all that we are actively fixing bugs on all clients. Some are quick to fix, some take a fair bit of time. Please try to be patient and keep submitting those reports!

Thanks!

I have been submitting reports since June 16th. I would like to commend the patience and through work that GM Lead Tech Gus has done with me. HOWEVER, the recent days of reports I have sent have fallen on deaf ears and the recent reply from support (not GM GUS) was

“Take your iMac to Apple and have an employee run hardware tests on it”

I have a brand new (purchased in March 2015) 27" iMac (model just under the top model) and I have already spoken with Apple BEFORE contacting support and have run diagnostics as well as memory testing almost once a week now. I crash once or twice an hour.

In regards to the Cider error – its trying to call a windows .dll file that cannot be executed by the OS. I have even submitted Apple Crash reports to the techs.

I tried downloading a new-vanilla OSX installer but I can’t get the game to run, any ideas/suggestions?

I had that as well after one of the patches. There is a repair command to use in Terminal. I dont have it handy but im sure if you search for it that it will come up. After running the command in terminal RESTART your mac

Wow, kinda getting buyer’s remorse now. I’ve got a Mac and got this game because it’s one of very few MMORPGs other than WoW that runs on Mac. My Mac isn’t too bad, late 2013, 27 inch, i7 processor, 32 GB, hybrid SSD drive. The crashing seemed to occur whenever a lot of players are around. From what I can tell, WvW and most larger boss fights are out of the question for me, because my client usually crashes JUST before the boss is dead. I get nothing when the boss dies.

When I saw that it was Mac “beta”, I figured “okay, maybe it’s a work-in-progress”.

But 3 years? That’s inexcusable. What you want to tell me is that after 3 years, anyone with a Mac can’t enjoy HALF the game? SMDH

Can someone please tell me this is a joke.
We still have no word from ANet.

Are they seriously trying that hard to ignore us? I mean, the topic has over a thousand views, over 130 replies. Even though it’s a mac related thread it manages to stay in the first page.

ALMOST A WEEK AND NO REPLY?!

I suspect part of the issue is that Cider, last time I looked anyway, only implements the 32-bit Windows API, which restricts the address space.

The 32-bit Windows client would have the same limitation, but it does not have to deal with Cider “polluting” the address space (which may or may not be a thing… this is getting into areas where my knowledge becomes hazy).

My late ’12 iMac is still running GW2 OK. Maybe because I am still running Mavericks.

It does seem to “fail to connect” more often (maybe due to increased number playing now), but once connected is about same performance and not crashing.

My suggestion is just to keep this topic alive and make sure it stays on the front page of tech support :/

I opened a ticket about this to try and shed some more light on the issue… This was what they suggested…

Thank you for the update.

I would like you to stop any applications that may be automatically starting in the background when you turn on your computer. When you remove these applications from the startup list, you may want to make note of them so you can manually re-add them in the future if you wish. Doing this will help us determine if another program is interfering with your ability to run Guild Wars 2.

Please do the following:

On the Finder menu bar, click Go > Applications > System Preferences.
Under the System header open “Accounts.”
Choose your account on the left.
Click the “Login Items” button on the right.
Select any items in the list and click the minus button below the list one at a time until the list is empty.
On the Finder menu bar, click Go > Computer.
Open your Hard Drive.
Click System > Library > and Startup Items.
Remove any applications that are listed here.
Once all items are removed from both locations please restart your computer and try the game again. If the issue persists, please let us know.

Absolutely absurd.

Wow pass the buck much anet. Honestly it’s like they don’t even read the crash logs it’s mostly to do with memory dumps because of the 32 bit Windows wrapper that they use now they are scratching their heads about it on sure. I wouldn’t be surprised if they honestly just gave up with Mac at this point it either that or they find a better company to use a wrapper with or build a native client.

Day 7

Still alone on the island. Thought I saw a ship on the horizon, but it was a flock of seagulls, so I ran, I ran so far away. But I couldn’t get away.

Mac client still crashes every 20 mins or so in group content. Lasts a little longer in solo content.

Hoping for a message in a bottle from the Anet crew about what they plan to do to about knowingly selling us a broken product.

What they don’t realize is that if they had a proper native mac client, and actually made use of the mac software, all mac gamers who look for MMO’s, would more then likely come to GW2.

The game itself is amazing, and compared to other MMO’s I think its probably the best one. So if you put that plus a native mac client together, even if it costs a bit to get it working properly, In the end it would probably be worth the risk.

That is just what I think, but I realize that since the support for mac has been removed and no devs respond to our posts, the likelihood of getting a real client is none existent,

which makes me sad because now I’m looking to final fantasy online. they at least said that they hired outside help and will be working on making it work properly in the future, hopefully soon, whether it is native or not, they have the support. (although I hope and dream for either game having a native client)

Here is to dreaming…

The problem is Anet is really bad at talking to everyone and then you pile on the mess that is Cider (including how they did a great job destroying all good will from us over the last 3 years) and yeah, I can see why we’re going to get only a token comment every 8 or so months at this point. I’m fairly confident that the game will slowly get better over the next 3 or so months. I’m dubious it will ever be as stable as it was previously because the only reason it was at least semi-stable before was because the old maps are relatively simple compared to the new ones and they’re just going to hit the wall with respect to Cider. I really wonder what is going on some times, devs are acting all weird about Cider ports continuing to exist either saying vague things about improvements are coming down the pipe (source CCP) or nothing at all (Anet). And then Blizzard is suddenly talking to Mac users with legal boilerplate that doesn’t answer questions. Sigh.

Hmm, I’m not having all that much problems as you guys, maybe because I have the latest MacBook Pro? Also, I there’s a little guide a friend of mine sent to me to increase my fps:

“This guide will show you how to take advantage of your Video Ram to instantly boost your fps on the mac client. I’ve been wondering why my mac with good hardware was getting such terrible fps especially in zergs. With this edit I went from average of about 20 fps to about 30 or more fps in LA. In PVE i’m seeing up to 50 compared to about 35 before the edit.
What you will do is edit your config file which defaults your video ram to 256 and change it to the proper amount of video ram your mac has.
(For reference I am using the latest OS X El Capitan)
Step 1: Find out how much video ram your mac has.

  • click the Apple menu, go to About This Mac
  • click system report
  • click graphics/displays in the left-hand column
  • find your VRAM (Total) – this is what you will enter in the gw2 config file, mine was 1024 (four times the amount set by default in the config file!)
Step 2: Edit your GW2 config file
  • close Guild Wars 2 if it is running
  • go to your applications folder and right click the Guild Wars 2 app
  • click show package contents
  • open Contents>Resources>Preferences
  • open the config file in TextEdit
  • find the line that says “VideoRam” = “256” and change the 256 to your VRAM (Total) that you found in step 1
  • find the line that says “AGPVertexRam” = “128” and change the 128 to half of your VRAM (Total)
  • save and close the file and reopen the Guild Wars 2 app
  • enjoy the extra fps!!!
Hopefully this guide helps anyone else with a Mac who, like me, was frustrated with their low fps!
Note: You may have to redo this after every patch, not sure yet." -Reddit

Hope this helps!

Have you actually played the game to the point where there are about 25+ players on the screen? It has little to do with fps IMO, as I’m using default settings and am getting a comfortable 68 fps. The problem seems to be when players populate the screen, the client seems to blow up after about a minute or two. It’s not laggy or anything, it’s like the client is an anti-social emokid that will have a nervous breakdown if too many people are around. And it’s almost always just before the boss dies, or when I try to roam around in Lion’s Arch for longer than a minute.

Actually, I play with my player settings quite low, I can see my own character in rather high detail, and my party members as well. But the others are either default models or non-apparant at all.

It seems the problem is a bad memory leak. And if that leak is in Cider, then getting it fixed will be an even bigger problem. I’ve been running Activity Monitor while playing GW2 these last few days. I’ve noticed that when “Real Memory” use is in the vicinity of 2.5G, a crash is imminent. I’ve taken to restarting the client on my own when I see it get to around 2.45G to try and manage it.

Last night I was doing the Legendary Wyvern fight. My client crashed 4 times during that single fight.

I use the world map a lot, and I notice every time I display the world map and scroll/zoom/pan it, memory use jumps fast. Wait for the memory use to get to 2.45G, open world map, zoom it a couple times and poof — crash on demand.

This only began with HoT updates over the last weekend. The initial release and betas didn’t have this problem.

It would be cool if Anet would, you know, like a normal beta, tell us what the known bugs are so we don’t have to guess or figure them out ourselves so we can try to avoid triggering them.
