Found this very useful link (from a google research): https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/28147936-Guild-Wars-2-Mac-Edition

“Is Guild Wars 2 offered in a Mac® version?
Yes. Guild Wars 2 is offered in both Windows® and Mac versions. The Mac version is currently in beta. A release version will be available after testing and optimization have been completed.”

-Nowhere I see them mention that it’s a wrapper.
-They write it with the sole purpose of the customer buying the product and wait forever for the client to come out of “beta”.
-They don’t mention obrigatory bootcamp
-They don’t offer a windows copy when purchasing the game

What bugs me the most is buying a broken product with the false pretext that it will be a complete product one day. 3 YEARS OMFG!

I really don’t want to be forced to quit this game ONCE AGAIN! Especially after i just bought the freaking expansion. This is a complete lack of respect to the customer

Google GW2 for Mac or Guild Wars 2 for Mac like many customer that use Mac will do to see if can play game on Mac before buy. Tell first search result not sponsor. I bet 100 gold it is this page talk about better when finish client and how Anet excite to play on Mac and how Anet president love his Mac.

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/announcing-guild-wars-2-for-mac-beta/

Yes old but Anet need to change this page and HoT sale page for Mac and say it may not work or crash often. No news on if it will ever work good. That is honest to new customer. We already get burn by Anet with Mac client. Maybe Anet should not burn new Mac customer and be honest.

Genuine advice:
If you use a Mac with OS X – don’t use the official Anet client. It’s a Cider wrapper developed by TransGaming and as we all know, it doesn’t work very well.

What I recommend:
Download PlayOnMac. It’s a lovely front-end for Wine, the wrapper that Cider is based on. Install Guild Wars 2 through it.

Once you’ve done this, go to the settings and switch to the latest staging version of Wine. Add the flag -dx9single.

Then, go to the Wine settings, go to the ‘Staging’ tab and enable CSMT.

This worked wonders for me – I can now play the game in a resizable windowed mode, full screen windowed mode and the low quality sound glitch is gone. I also genuinely get better framerates.

cider and wine are manage by different companies. Cider forked wine a long time ago. Crossover which manages wine does a much better job than transgaming. Basically, whatever improvements in wine does not filter down to cider.

Yeah, I am defiantly in favor of them creating a native client for Mac’s. Open GL is still superior to Direct X. I have had all the issues mentioned in all 6 pages of this post. And running a 2 month old 27" Imac with 4 gig of vram, 16gig of system ram, the graphics just are way sub par to what the hardware will support.

It really comes down to if they think it’s economically feasible to put the resources behind such. But as they show for HOT download page, it clearly show’s MAC client is listed as a viable option. And at present it is not.

Mac client has many problem and worse over last year. Now we see NVIDIA buy TransGame that make cider port Anet use. We do not know what will happen with Mac beta for 3 year client. Many Mac customer have concern. Many Mac customer can not play good even when HoT sale page say it work on Mac. Report of many crash and other Mac beta problem exist for years never fix.

Mac customer want to know many thing. Does Anet work to make Mac client better? If they do how do they do this. Does NVIDIA buy TransGaming make a problem for future of Mac client?

We want honest answer about this Mac product you sale for 3 year and also sale on HoT page that say work for Mac but many say do not work even if they have Mac computer better than minimum show HoT sale page.

What is Anet honest doing for Mac customer that buy you game? When can receive honest answer about product you sale to Mac customer? “We know problem and wait for news.” is not the answer because that is same thing Mac customer see on forum for years. We are tired and bored of this answer. Just like we are bored and tired when people from Anet say here is a new Mac specialist and that person post a few time and disappear.

Mac customer that pay for you game and do buy gem you owe to be honest and do not lie about what might happen when do not mean it. Be honest. If Mac client is trash and broke for good say so. If no plan in next year to make Mac client work say so. If Anet do not care about Mac client say so. If Anet do have plan in next year to real fix Mac client say so and share plan and tell what work on to fix this mess.

Mac customer just want information and not “We know it is broke and work on it.” because we hear this for years. 3 year of client that is now more broke than before. It time to be honest with Mac people you sale this game to. If can not do this should not allow Mac customer to buy gem for money. Make this disable Mac client to buy gem for money because to take more money from Mac customer Anet do no support and not honest with is not fair. Anet has broke product they sale to Mac customer. They know this. So do not take more money from Mac customer for gem sale if can not tell Mac customer plan for fix. Better thing to do until Anet say honest plan to fix broke Mac client.

If ANet will not tell Mac customer how they fix Mac client and when plan for fix should not take more money from Mac customer from gem sale.

I got to agree, I’m getting scared now that in the future they will kill the mac beta all together or make the mac beta become obsolete. It is to the point where I’m about to halt gem purchasing for fear that soon I will not be able to play the game.

I hope they are able to have a working Mac client soon, or at least give us some future to what is going to happen to us mac players. Sadly, only time will tell.

For now, I’m going to play as much as I can, in case Mac Beta goes bye bye for good.

Obviously ANet feel more pressure from the fuss made over a suspected cheater than any whining from their disgruntled Mac customers. After all, their Mac users are a placid bunch who have, for the most part, quietly accepted a second class deal over the last three years.

They are probably hoping the pesky Mac users will give up and stop bothering them when they have no answers to give.

ummm yea. opengl is not superior than direct x

In fact, only nvidia opengl is decent. Every other company sucks

Basically, apple/mesa/amd/powervr/mali/intel all pales in comparison to nvidia.

The closest to native I think anet will allow will be an eon port since I think they are unwilling to divide up the code base. Hmmm, I wonder if anet implements vulkan. Hmmm

Yes good start. Many Mac customer look for this attention from Anet to. Sad we see most is “We know broke but work on fix.” Message Mac customer get for 3 year now. I think attention is not worth any if same broke promise for 3 year.

This lack of communication, and any care in the world for mac players is pretty insulting.

That’s because maybe you didn’t know, but, this is probably the 4th or 5th thread that gets this many pages of mac users begging for some help and they just ignore, all the other threads get burried under the windows one.

I’m so tired of this crap honestly, i’m about to go on my 4th break of gw2 because it’s so stressful to play this game. Everytime I play it i can’t enjoy myself and it reminds me that i put money into this game, all because of false advertisement….

Was it quite as bad as it is now? Because the feeling that I get is that previously, as long as the game was playable, nobody took the Mac users seriously, because hey, they are able to play the game, so we shouldn’t focus on them, right? Well, now it’s impossible for 95% of Mac users to even launch the game, and the 5% of us that are able to do that don’t get anything done anyway.

It’s funny in an ironic way, though, because if Windows users had gotten the problem we’ve had for 3 years now, the issue would have been resolved within 24h.

The lack of response/care and any decent basic information for the Mac users is just so sad. They could have at least, before launching HoT, be honest to its customers and mac gamers especially for once and say something like:

Yes, our so called/promoted ‘beta’ client is piece of crap and we now it, we stopped looking into it for quite some time and so please understand that we wont be supporting it in the near future. Done.

I would accept this and then decide wether to buy expansion/reconsider bootcamp or just face reality, that the current situation won’t change and just try playing (if you can call it that by now) until game won’t start at all, over silence and occasional bs replies like “I do want to assure you all that we are actively fixing bugs on all clients.”.

Guys i see lots of activity in this thread which is very good! Please keep posting and make waves.

Wine/Crossover:
Is it possible just build the crossover’s gw2 client by players?

1. I agree that wine provides great efficiency nowadays. There is a guy – Paul the Tall who works with mentioned software and does very good job. He ports old and new interesting games and most of the run very very smooth. If someone can construct good wrapper + guide for us it would be great!

2. We need proper answer from Anet about could we possibly use all these tweaks with the client? Last thing we want is ti get banned =)

Crossover is kind of a ‘it may work, it may not’ situation.
They were working really really hard on GW2 when it first came out. That’s actually how I was originally able to play GW2. However, once the official mac beta client came out crossover stopped working on it and as a result it never became a “supported” application. There are very few people actively making changes to GW2 in crossover to ensure that it runs well. Any changes you do see will have come from Wine.

I am in the same boat as many of you in that I have basically given up. After 3 pretty solid years I am pretty let down. The fact that anet is obviously at work to some capacity and released a 64 bit client but has done jack squat for Mac in any of the recent updates is pretty atrocious as a company who solicits support for a specific ecosystem. Needless to say if this is not addressed in a timely manner with at least a response from the devs I’m quite certain myself and the wife will be moving on and probably request a full refund on both hot orders.

Wine and by extension Cider have no 64 bit support on OSX. From the Wine mailing list:

“I don’t know the exact details myself (Ken is the expert), but the answer is that it does not work, and probably never will. OSX has a ABI incompatibility with Win64 – OSX overwrites a CPU register that Win64 applications expect to remain untouched. Apple can’t change the ABI because there are already 64 bit OSX apps that expect things to work that way. A potential workaround may be to run Wine inside a CPU emulator like qemu, but that is anything but easy.”

So it will be impossibile to run a 64bit version of Guild Wars 2 on OSX for many years to come (and when it will be possible it will be slow because it will be emulated). I am considering to switch to Linux (where wine has proper 64 bit support) or Windows,so that I don’t crash anymore.

I use linux gallium nine wine. If you do not know, linux has native support for direct x 9. I just have kittentier drivers than windows but I get better performance than whatever anet puts out for the mac client because of no opengl -> dx9 overhead.

Oh well, there is no difference in perf really between 64 bit and 32 bit like anet said.

https://wiki.ixit.cz/d3d9

The link does not seem to be working. Its a explanation for gallium nine.

those russian devs are amazing. Hats off to sarnex/alex etc al. and those mesa devs who merge directx9. Without them, gallium nine would not work

I’m thinking about getting a new iMac so this thread is very interesting to me. Do the issues everyone is having also apply to the windows client running thru Bootcamp? Just curious as I don’t think anyone mentioned it. I know it’s not the best solution, especially with Apple’s forced drivers for video that are usually a few releases behind AMDs catalyst drivers.

I just checked AMDs site and the versions (windows 7 and OS X bootcamp) are both 15.x

Guys, I come bearing news. Well, not new-news, but helpful-old-news. (Also, I should lay off Doctor Who, because I start to make about as much sense as a Time Lord.)

I got in touch with the GW2 support team, and this is the response I got: “After reviewing your System’s Profile, I see that your system does not fully meet the requirements to run Guild Wars 2 as intended. Specifically, your computer’s processor and RAM do not meet the minimum requirements to run Guild Wars 2, which could be contributing to the issues you are experiencing. I do have some troubleshooting steps for you to try however, which can help resolve the issue. I would like you to stop any applications that may be automatically starting in the background when you turn on your computer.”

(TL;DR: Delete StartUp items and see if the problem is resolved. It may or may not work.)

Not sure if you knew about this, but it did help me.

Now, I realize that this does not fix the issue, that only postpones it, but it is a temporary solution worth trying while we try to get the support team actually interested in us. After all, some gaming is better than no gaming, isn’kitten (Also, could somebody else also write to them about this problem? They might take us more seriously if there are more people actually complaining, rather than sitting here on the forum and stewing.)

I guess a late 2013 mac pro doesn’t meet their ‘minimum requirements’ considering I don’t have any startup programs and it still runs like I’m trying to run on a TI-83.

You won’t have any of these issues in Bootcamp. The game runs really well in bootcamp, because you’re basically just running a windows computer (Macs have the exact same hardware as windows computers).

Wow pass the buck much anet. Honestly it’s like they don’t even read the crash logs it’s mostly to do with memory dumps because of the 32 bit Windows wrapper that they use now they are scratching their heads about it on sure. I wouldn’t be surprised if they honestly just gave up with Mac at this point it either that or they find a better company to use a wrapper with or build a native client.

Reading them would help a great deal! While their support is better than that of some other game companies they should look at known issues. I went round and round for the longest time with them. Finally I looked on the web myself to confirm what the logs (which I had sent them) were telling me and found out I was not the only one with the same problem.

Apparently asking for a 64bit Mac client and telling them their lack of Mac support is disappointing in the 64bit beta client thread is qualified of being “off topic” and will result in an infraction (be careful).

Apparently asking for a 64bit Mac client and telling them their lack of Mac support is disappointing in the 64bit beta client thread is qualified of being “off topic” and will result in an infraction (be careful).

Sorry if you feel I am always complaining but I wouldn’t be if the game didn’t crash every 20 minutes…

They dont want us, the community they try their best to Ignore, showing our discontent in a topic for their beloved windows base. They get 2 clients, while we can’t even get a working wrapper!
I mean, 2 weeks with this thread in the front page and yet they can’t be bothered to help us. That’s anet supporting mac for you

Bootcamp is the only viable solution to playing gw2 on mac. Doing so it was the only time i was able to enjoy the game. Sadly my optical drive died and now im limited to os x client

Just download the Windows OS then? I had one of the later iMac’s, so I never had an optical drive to begin with.

Wish things were that simple.
Mbp with optical drivers wont boot through usb nor will it accept external dvd-r (even the apple one)
Im literally stuck with os x, either way that’s no solution for many users in the same situation as mine or similar

Since they are selling a product that doesn’t work, a lawsuit would be the most appropriate action.

Couldn’t agree more. Especially after the new record for silent treatment they r giving us.
I feel like mac users aren’t welcome at all in this game. First they announce mac support, once they have ur money, they will invest into the windows community and completely ignore us like an unwanted guest

I dont even try playing anymore to avoid disappointment

They release a patch today tweaking the 64 bit client beta released yesterday while our 3 year old beta is rotting and it stinks so bad

Except they’ve been able to successfully cover their keesters (that’s a funny word) by saying that the Mac client is in “beta.”

Hate to say it, but we’re kinda boned.

Personally I bought the mac version when it was released. I never would have expected that 3 years later it would still be in beta and crash more than on the initial release.

Beta releases are supposed to be temporary. I expected better.

Well… I checked the support threads hoping beyond hope that there might be some sort of explanation for why my launcher is, in fact, not launching… Instead, I see that Anet is as usual ignoring the Mac playerbase and our problems. Does anyone have a better suggestion than merely bumping this thread (which they are clearly paying no attention to anyway), and which could actually have a chance at garnering some sort of attention?

(Note: I don’t have Windows installed, and I’ve been using the official “beta” client since launch. Have had FPS and lagging issues, crashes, and since HOT they have been worse and for the last week the launcher won’t even pop up.)

On the same boat as you. Ive waited for this client to be fixed for longer than i have actually played the game. And as always, since the clients birth we are treated as a joke

Brace yourselves for a beta longer than google’s

Have you tried deleting and downloading it again?

I’ve had instances where the launcher is slow to pop up, but that usually follows whenever a new patch is available.

It might sound obvious and apologies if it is the first thing you did, but have you tried restarting your Mac. Mine sometimes can’t start GW2 and restarting it always helps.

Good luck.
