Have you tried deleting and downloading it again?
I’ve had instances where the launcher is slow to pop up, but that usually follows whenever a new patch is available.
I did indeed, and it hasn’t made any change.
It might sound obvious and apologies if it is the first thing you did, but have you tried restarting your Mac. Mine sometimes can’t start GW2 and restarting it always helps.
Good luck.
Ditto. (Multiple times…)

Like I said before, I just hit enter after selecting the invisible gw2 application. Usually gets it to pop up for me.
I am having the same issue now.. even deleted and re-downloaded startup .. and after the initial installation is done.. it just sits there in dock showing its running but nothing is going on (checked activity monitor). Restarted comp.. did all the script (in terminal) commands, and still no go. This client is just currently borked.

How many posts and views do we need to reach to get any answer from dear devs?

So here I am. Again.
I thought I’d try the Autodetect settings and put the shaders on low.
Nope.
Got a crash about 30 mins in, just standing in Verdant Brink:
Heap, bytes=4194752
A serious error has occurred that prevented the application from continuing. A report has been sent to ArenaNet to help determine the cause.
Is that even true? Are you really determining the cause?

The cause is well known but there is really no easy solution.
The Cider wrapper to GW2 behaves like a 32bit Windows so GW2 suffers really fast from memory fragmentation. It’s possible to avoid heap fragmentation but it requires A LOT of programming resources (developer time) either by allocating on the stack, or allocating fixed sized chunks of memory on the heap. An easier way out is using a 64bit application in a 64bit OS since in that scenario an application can address and allocate a lot more memory . ArenaNet currently used this way out to solve the problem for the Windows users.
Unfortunately, the 64bit version will never be able to run on OSX through Cider/Wine. Wine’s 64bit version is not compatible with OSX. This is caused by the fact that on OSX a particular cpu register is used by the OS that on Linux and Windows the applications are free to use. So you would have to use a CPU emulator making things extra slow. The are a lot of details about this on the Wine mailing lists. This incompatibility could be avoided by applications not using this register at all, but it’s still unclear and it will probably take about 2 years of development time until there is usable Wine64 on OSX (even for Wine people this is not a priority).
Also keep in mind that Cider as we know it is no longer developed. Transgaming sold the technology and the team to NVIDIA, which is using both for work on NVIDIA SHIELD.

My husband and I were doing the verdant brink area together a little and started having synchronised crashing every 20-25 minutes while doing stuff. It was very romantic.
Hmm, if they were synchronized it might be a network issue. I have been having them a lot recently as well and so far they have been annoying to isolate. I wonder if cider is messing something up at a low level?
Try opening a terminal window and doing a ‘ping www.google.com’ and if you get some missing/dropped packets then it is on the network. Now try the same after rebooting everything (modem, router, computer) but not starting the client.

It wasn’t quite that synchronised. I was taking a little poetic licence. We have similar computers and kept crashing within a couple minutes of each other because we were doing the same thing and both hitting the memory wall at the same time.
We installed bootcamp and bought windows for 1299 kronor per copy. That’s about 185 us dollars each to play this 50€ game. Also, windows is horrible. None of our peripherals work very well (goodbye, magic trackpad). What a terrible os windows is! Just under the surface is all the windows 95 looking interface and nothing ‘just works’ like it does in os x. I really, really hate windows and having had to pay so much for the pleasure of using it is galling.
I am so disappointed in Anet… This customer support is absolutely terrible. They need to remove the mac as a supported system from their website asap since it is not supported at all.

Inazuma pretty much summed up the major issue and why a fix isn’t coming anytime soon. I’d suggest everyone who is angry simply request a refund.
For the people whose launcher isn’t showing up, this is a thing that’s come up before in previous updates. It happened to me earlier this week after an update. Give it 10 to 15 minutes to see if it shows up. (Might take longer.) Once the patch loads and launches once it should be okay. (Meaning, the next time you launch it after that it should pop right up.) There might be more details about that in a previous topic somewhere in here.
For everyone else who is determined to keep playing: Settings -> Best Performance. Yes, the game looks like a hot potato when you do this. However I managed to get through whole event chains on the new maps without crashing at lowest settings. Keep sending crash reports. Good luck.

The launcher not showing up might be fontconfig rebuilding it’s cache. Other multi platform software suffers from it (if you used VLC you know what I’m talking about). Just give it 5-10 minutes
If this is indeed the problem they could ‘solve’ it by providing a custom fonts.conf for fontconfig: the fix is trivial.
I’d suggest everyone who is angry simply request a refund.
I do not think Anet will refund for Mac beta player who play for 2 1/2 year when client did work ok before it break.
It never worked ok. Now, it doesn’t work at all.

You might try to get a refund (I don’t know how easy that will be for you) and go for CrossOver. I experience some crashing, but rarely as debilitating as what I’ve been reading so far. Probably won’t cost quite that much, and your trackpad will work fine. (Mac trackpads are phenomenal, so I completely understand.)

Getting a refund is not an option. I like the game, i’ve waited 3 years for it to become playable, bought the expansion, even if they refund only the expansion they will delete my whole account.
It also doesn’t change the fact that their ad is misleading and will bring more mac users who will soon also turn into salty people because they got mislead by ANet.
It’s a cicle that can only be broken by actually fixing this crap

You know that Ragfell meant getting a refund on the purchase of Windows and then just playing GW2 in crossover instead right? (if your comment wasn’t directed at theirs then my apologies)

Yeah.. well it’s still not coming up after 2.5+ hours (I have tested it) so its not wait a few minutes issue. And this is on multiple tries. I have a ticket in with support but we shall see how far that goes?
I am happy to run some diagnostic scripts if Anet provides them to check things. I can send them Wireshark logs as well if they need to check connectivity. Honestly I just want a clear response from them on what they are planning on doing with Mac client for the future. If they are not going to support it, I will load Windows 7 on an external drive and bootcamp it. As I think the performance hit running it on win 7 inside a VMware Fusion would be too much (which I do have installed now, for cisco class work).

Having the same issue of launcher not launching at all. The application is listed as running but nothing happens, and no window appears. I have tried restarting my computer twice and and uninstalling and reinstalling the launcher twice. It’s strange because I was just playing two days ago completely fine. I am in the process of updating my OS X to El Capitan and will see if that changes anything.

Thanks Qugi. I may have sound a bit ambiguous there. But yes, I meant that getting a refund on the game, not on the windows, wasn’t an option.
Yesterday the game was unplayable, today after i download a quick patch they released nov 5th the game somehow managed to stabalize the fps even in the HoT maps.
Now I’m not sure if the fps was stable because i let my laptop a whole day resting, or they actually did something about it.
It’s hard to figure out when no mac fixes are mentioned in the dev release notes… I sure hope they did fix it though, still a long way to go for it to run as it’s supposed to

Same issue – it worked two days ago, and doesn’t anymore. I open it, and nothing happens, on two macs with wildly different builds (one is the cheapest money can buy (mine) and one is the most expensive (my work computer) and both have the same issues.
They’re available in the launcher, show in the running programs and Mission control; I have both waited several hours in case it’s a time issue, rebooted, downloaded and redownloaded, and even tried Wine-ing a version but that one crashed every 10 minutes as it patched.
Running the repair script does the same thing – opens the program, and it just hangs there, nothing visible, nothing changes.
It would be great if they’d even acknowledge the problem. =/

this is really frustrating…. yesterday somehow i managed to play the game (even though with the worst settings and fps limit at 30) the fps was not stuttering, even at HoT maps!
kitten i even managed to finish my story mode, got my Rev to 80… today is a different story….
THE FPS STARTED STUTTERING AGAIN WTF!
Can we please get something that works more than just one day of the week?! seriously! i didn’t buy this game for this!

Maybe some Gems or Birthday Booster or so.or a client that doesn’t crash and makes you feel like your computer is completely crap
Those superiority complexes from windows people are SO annoying. Especially since my current machines always have specs that blow most PCs people are using out of the water.
Windows People?
Whom are you talking about?
Bootcamp is the only viable solution to playing gw2 on mac. Doing so it was the only time i was able to enjoy the game. Sadly my optical drive died and now im limited to os x client
Bootcamp is no solution for me, cause I do not want to run Windows on my Mac!

I know that fps isn’t the only issue with the game, but trust me, the game opens here, but the amount of fps stuttering i get is unplayable.
What’s the point of a client that opens but a game that doesn’t work as intended?
We need to pressure them on social medias as this topic is clearly on their black list

3 years of a growing mac community and still ignored, with their misleading ad the number of unsatisfied costumers will only grow.
So we just have to accept that we wasted at least 110 bucks on a broken product with misleading ad that said they have a mac client and mac support?
Well after 3 years ive only seen lies and disappointment. If you check the forum section where they post patch notes you will find 0 updates on the client. NOTHING!
As day go by i just regret more and more supporting this company and feel very upset at the fact that if in 3 years they haven’t given us any attention, i highly doubt that they will now…

Well I guess they had to do something for all the out of memory bugs they had and, from what I have read, they cannot apply the same fix to the Mac product. Maybe, once they bed down the troubles for the Win crowd, they can work on the Mac to see what they can do. I live in hope.
I expect we are not a big part of their client base, but we would be the most grateful.

the client is a box full of surprises.
on saturday the fps was so unbearable that i simply couldn’t play, the problem wasn’t the fps i see when i press f11. The game, regardless of the map, people or the fps, would constantly freeze every second, i couldn’t even see a complete action take place (walking for example).
On sunday, the game didn’t patch, i didn’t do anything to my mac either, but the game somehow fixed the freezing fps. But to my surprise i was getting crashing errors after a few hours (got 2 and the 2nd was right after the end of meta VB which made me lose the reward slow clap).
Either way i bet tomorrow the game will somehow start freezing again…

I don’t know if this will help anyone but I was just able to do MAW without crashing and I have been playing about in the old areas without crashing for the past few days. These are my settings on an iMac, i7.
The graphics are pretty ugly compared to what it can do but I can live with them if if means I can play my Mac and not crash. The FPS is high because there are not too many players around. I also have names turned off.

You might wanna try to tune down the character model limit to lowest; character model quality to low; turn shadows off; set render to native.
That way you won’t have to be stuck with subsample and it might increase ur fps, stop crashes at big events

When I upgraded to El Capatain I experienced many of the issues people have been complaining about in this thread. Hell my system crashed once while I was standing in the Grove looking at my bank.
My solution was to downgrade OS back to Mavericks and things work much better now. It’s a bit of an extreme solution not everyone can implement because you have an old enough computer to use the system. You 1st have to make a “recovery disk” flash drive. Then you have to reformat your hard drive and do a clean install on everything.
You can’t use time machine unless it is a backup form the OS version you are going back to. This also most likely a temporary solution because Apple will most likely drop support for mavericks in the next few months.
If you try this there are several pitfall that could leave you with an computer you can’t boot up. It took me 2 days to implement because the “easiest” way to make the recovery disk through the terminal command doesn’t work properly. (you can boot with the recovery stick but it won’t finish the install because it makes an alias instead of unpacking some the files)

the character model is for the other characters, not yours. The second last option decides how many toons will show in your screen. The last option will decide the quality of these other toons, choosing low on this one will make it load the armor for most of the players that show on your screen.

Hello Ananda. I do not like Windows either and I only use it for games that don’t run on Mac (GW2 being, unfortunately, one of them). So I use bootcamp on my Mac and I gotta say Windows works perfectly. All my devices, including my trackpad, work just like in OS X. I am not joking. Did you install Apple’s bootcamp drivers? Check Apple’s official download page. http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
Even the sound controls and on screen audio volume indicator work like in OS X. And if you are using Windows 10, even auto-brightness works. This should, at least, make your stay on Windows more pleasant. One more thing, install the Bootcamp drivers I linked above first AND THEN install your GPU vendor’s proprietary drivers for optimal performance.

Super sampling gives the best performance on my system (2008 Mac Pro w/ GTX 760). It’s not a night & day difference, but it is (or was, haven’t checked in a while) a straight (as in, not a %), and pretty consistent gain of probably 2-4 FPS.
Which, combined with getting sometimes less than 15 FPS while my CPU & GPU utilization are both < 50%, is why it’s so frustrating to get low a FPS rate… Clearly the system’s capable of more, but something is holding it back.
Editing the config file to reflect my video cards actual amount of VRAM (shouldn’t that be auto-detected?) made my FPS a lot better out in the open world, but it still sucks in LA.

It’s a little disheartening, but I guess I understand why people still think changing config settings for an X11 driver that isn’t used has an effect (look at the “GraphicsDriver” setting. Cider uses a quartz-based driver, not X11.)
It would be more helpful if they’d turn on the memory debug overlay so they could see when the client was almost of VM address space, and switch zones to free up some space and delay the inevitable crash.
Since 64-bit cider isn’t likely to drop from the sky anytime soon, If we could have a setting to use generic weapon and backpack textures like the current armour setting, that would help a lot for OOM crashes in areas with a large number of players.
Also, if you considered bootcamp but thought you needed an optical drive or couldn’t get it to install with a USB stick, el Cap let’s you install straight from an ISO by creating a partition to hold the installer files. Might be worth your time to check it out.

You sure that’s a feature from el captain or something the new models of mbp are able to do?
my late 2011 mbp 15" never showed me that option through the bootcamp app. Although this would be beautiful if works for all models (my os x still yosemite)

That is a new feature in El Capitan. It’s separate to the USB booting that is available on all macs without a disc drive. Though the feature may actually not carry across to 2011 MBP’s, I would assume it does however. It’s software based, rather than EFI/hardware based.
