We are pretty confident these patching crashes have to do with 3rd party software (such as malware, antivirus, and proxies) hooking into the Winsock API.

This Microsoft KB article explains how to reset TCP/IP:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/299357

Please let us know if this does not solve the problem.

So if these crashes are due to third party programs, which seemes highly unlikely based on the amount of feedback, how come many and I crash much less when running potato graphics (from very high to low in settings) during larger events/in general?

Client crashing almost ALWAYS during big events. World bosses, and such. Doesn’t exactly matter what my settings are, it seems to happen anyway.

i7 4930k
980ti SLI
32GB RAM

I am losing hours of work on these events only to crash and not get back in in time for rewards or get in on the same map.

I’ve had people tell me its my fault, and my settings… but I’m doing exactly what the game allows me to do, so Anet really needs to get it together. I spend too much money on them.

This happens to me and almost all my friends too.

It is not your fault or your settings. It is the patch.

Same here since HoT, never a crash before. It works more or less fine if I’m around central tyria doing legendary stuff. Fine in sPvP also. The issues I have is mostly in big events in the expansion maps.

What’s causing this issue? It’s saying OOM, but I have a lot more memory than is used.

Client Crashing constantly [Merged]

Since the HoT launch, I could hardly play an hour without crashing. No matter, if I do stuff or just stand around or change map – happened there quite a few times, too.

I turned everything way down, cause it mostly happens with a lot of people around. But still, the crashes come.

Today, it was a bit better and I did not crash as often. But then again… settings were all the way down – which looks horrible and I wouldn’t want to play like that… at all. And still the crash comes occasionally.

Not sure if it helps – but I’ve been doing a lot of sPvP – No crash, played for 2-3 hours today at least – as soon as I go into Maguuma the crashing starts..

Same here. Every patch that says “fixed a client crash” I think, okay this will fix my problem, but no. I can’t get thru one complete participation cycle without crashing and coming back in to zero progress. Don’t get me wrong, getting set back to zero is secondary to this constant crashing. Every crash I obediently “send report to Anet” hoping this will help.

Also new information : make sure your client is completely patched, since the
streaming client leads to more memory fragmentation.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

I’ve been crashing every few hours in the HoT areas. My latest crash came in Heart of the Mists after a PvP match. Getting really annoyed…

Gonna play the Blade and Soul beta for now because it’s really frustrating to finish a big meta event only to crash before being able to get any of the chests or other area rewards.

I have been asked by the developers over my ticket response that upgrading to 64-bit client will solve the problem. I am unable to do the same. Hence I requested for a refund. I just wonder that all 64-bit users dont experience such crash issues and all the players experiencing the same are either 32-bit Window or Mac users?

My husband and I are both running 64 bit and we are both suffering from the constant crashes.

Anyway, saying it is a 32bit issue would not be correct, at least it isn’t the only issue, obviously.

Edit: Also wanted to add that I always wait until the patch is complete before entering the game. So that isn’t the cause of my problems either.

Is your game completely patched and no downloads in the client going on?

Sorry, I did a ninja edit even before seeing your question.

This is a memory fragmentation issue and is solely on their end. This should be their number one priority right now. What confuses me is that the beta did not seem to have the same issue so what’s changed in the live version?
Run Windows 7 with 16gigs of ram and I crash once or twice an hour, very frustrating!

6 Pages already without a dev’s answer.
This really feels like a ‘kitten you’ against the costumer…
Oh, and now I’ll probably face an infraction for saying the f*** word… Just like I’ve been warned for not ‘spamming’ the same message twice in a row with the text: “ARENANET RESPOND TO THIS THREAD”.

It kittenes me off A LOT to know that this is being read by ArenaNET but despite the many requests they refuse to answer or tell us what they’re working on. I have a feeling we’re being ignored, and I’m already trying to slow down with GW2. I think I’ll have to quit this game since I don’t have the money for a new hyper-tech computer… And even If I had the money for that, I doubt if it’ll help much since people that have those computers are also experiencing these issues. Less frequently, but they still excist…

So yeah… I’m super disappointed by ArenaNet. And especially their customer support…

64 Bit here, constant crashes. Averaging around 10 to 15 a day. Verdant Brink was more stable, Auric Basin is atrocious for this. Crashing at least twice per Meta. Which is around an hours of work (from beginning to end) getting to the climax only to be dropped and lose all progression and a shot at the meta event completion.

The crashes seem more constant during the ending (Octovine fight) but that might just be me being irked as I’ve crashed there A LOT.

The crashes are extremely weird, too. At least I’ve never experience anything like it since I’ve been playing (Since launch):

The game crashes and I get the “send report to aNet” popup – but if I click back into the GW2 client on taskbar, I can continue playing with some major issues, namely item names are gone, none of the ingame menus work (Guild, Invite to party, etc.) no weapon moves have names or graphics.

About 5 to 10 minutes into this, the game will freeze completely forcing a hard shutdown (of the client, not computer).

I was getting maybe 2 of these every couple of days in Verdant Brink (even that might be an exaggeration) but Auric Basin has been stupendous in the amount of crashes. Like I said, easily 10 to 15 a day if I put a lot of time into it.

This is actually becoming increasingly more frustrating especially since this expansion rewards sticking to the various events in the same map. How is it that zero comments have been made in days now from an ANet employee? This small inaction can easily show that you have zero interest in fixing this. “We got our money, have fun people.”

I’m not trying to beat the dead horse here but some sort of update would be nice. Even if the problem has not yet been discovered.

I usually crash between “big” stages of events, OOM everytime (my rig has 32GB of RAM), 64-bit Win 7 Ulti.

All you can do is failsafe party and hope you get back to them.

Honestly, couldn’t ANet

>> IMPLEMENT RECONNECTION GRACE PERIOD <<

1-2mins would be enough. Easy temporary measure while they work out the problems.

Still not a single relevant dev response. :C
I check back every single day, both here as well as the ‘bugs’ section with its own dozen or so threads complaining of crashes, hoping for a red post assuring us that the team is working on a patch to fix the oom breaks. (I’ve forwarded numerous crash reports, more than plenty for their database to guide the mem. leak repair)
So far, zilch.
Is Anet not aware that this is a frustrating game-breaking issue that is costing them revenue in real-time?
As a long-time MMO addict, I always hold off before buying into an expansion, at least until after the initial traffic and the worst of the bugs are ironed out. But almost two weeks on, none of my characters can run three paces before crashing to desktop (oom, lowest graphics). Literally, GW2 has become the daily log-in tick box, nothing more.

Before the HoT/Halloween (heartbroken to now miss completely!) update on 23.10, I was a happily paying customer; shelling out for story chapters (some of which I can’t enjoy now!), character slots and making googly eyes at the stunning armour skins at the gem store. Not to mention, enthusiastically recommending GW2 as the best to all my gamer friends.
Two weeks on, with TPTB remaining silent on the problems with no moves towards acknowledgement or reassurance, what kind of customer does that make me now?
Again, I’ve done everything possible to try to fix on my end, but clearly, given the hundreds of other reports, the problem can only be amended by Anet.

All I (and all the other put-out players) request is an indication of whether a fix is being worked on (if at all) and an eta.

Thank you.

Today I played in Verdant Bink for 1 hour. During this hour I had 9 OOM crashes.
I had every graphic option on lowest.

After this I did SW events + Vinewrath for my Kudzu achievement. It took 45 minutes. During this time I had 7 OOM crashes.
I had every graphic option on lowest.

Before HoT, I could do SW events + Vinewrath for hours without a single crash. Even with my graphic options on medium.

HoT kittened up my gaming experience in GW2. I’ve spent money on this piece of cr*p and I can’t do anything with it. I’m very, very, very p*ssed.
I demand a refund, because I can’t do kitten with the game anyway, and can’t even decide to play without the expansion. Guild Wars 2 was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better before HoT even launched… But now the normal Guild Wars 2 has also been taken away from me.

Seriously ArenaNet… Do something, or admit your stupidity and give people refunds.

This is the response on Reddit, once again it concerns me that they don’t come here to try and clear things up when this is the main forums. I will be sending in our crash logs tonight but there is no surprise they are same as most of them here “heap memory”.

[–]DrStephenCW 309 points 1 day ago*
tl;dr: We’re aware!

First thing: we are aware. OOM crashes are the single biggest crash we have on the client side since the original GW2 launch; we’ve been hacking away at them for three years; and we recently added a lot of new tracking code, which we are analyzing.

Second thing: whoever posted that the problem is memory fragmentation is correct.

Third: Our test crew uses 32-bit Windows (XP!) almost entirely and this didn’t show up on their machines, so it’s something more subtle than the amount of RAM you have.

Fourth: The client is a 32-bit application; if it runs under 32-bit Windows, it only gets 2 gigabytes of RAM; if it runs under 64-bit Windows (which is 94% of our players) it has access to 4 gigabytes of RAM. But as I said, we ran the game a lot under [what we thought was] the worst scenario, which was 32-bit windows (XP!) and didn’t see these problems.

Fifth, if you have 32- bit Windows and 3-4 gigabytes of RAM (4 is the max 32-bit Windows supports) Windows will primarily use that RAM for disk caching after it creates the usual system tables.

Sixth: Someone is running Windows 10 in 32-bit? We have never tried that as far as I know. Holy moly. I suspect Windows 10 consumes a lot more system memory than older Windows, so that might be a key fact, and we’ll look into that. 32-bit Windows 10 sounds like the worst scenario.

Seventh (edit): Try making sure you are fully patched up before you play; the streaming client has been pretty successful for us but if it turns out something in our memory management system was on the edge, then streaming client might have put it over, as it can increase memory fragmentation. Just let the green bar on the login screen go to the end, instead of hitting play at “playable”.

If you’re using a 32-bit OS, you will have to upgrade. The new maps are right on the edge of the memory limitation, which is why it crashes a few minutes in. Windows 7 and above can upgrade for free, depending on the serial.

If you’re using a 64-bit OS, you can temporarily workaround the problem by lowering your graphics settings until a proper solution is made. On high settings, low texture quality and low model limit/quality, I lasted through 3.4 Verdant Brink day/night cycles before crashing.

Kinda off-topic, but there are two things that I just can’t for the life of me figure out…
1) Why does MS still make non-embedded 32-bit versions of Windows?
2) Why did they fragment Windows into separate 32-bit and 64-bit versions in the first place?

I crash anywhere from 2-3 times an hour, especially when trying to do some of the chaotic meta events. I shall just keep on sending my error reports when it happens in the hope that stability will be returned in the not too distant future.

Because some people still use older processors(Pentium) which can’t use 64-bit OS. It’s a shrinking minority, but it seems Microsoft still wants to cater to that minority. Pity Anet doesn’t have the same philosophy for Mac users.

According to wikipedia, the Pentium line got 64-bit support with the P4, back in 2004. If someone is still using a computer older than that… I don’t know, I find the distinction between 32-bit Windows and 64-bit Windows to be annoying.

Just submitted a support ticket. Not going to get my hopes up, but I’m hoping that maybe, just maybe, they may be able to suggest something that helps. Every meta event ends with a crash and it’s always immediately after the event ends.

I have no doubt whatsoever that they’re looking for solutions. They probably haven’t given us an ETA because tracking down memory bugs can be hard, and until they know what exactly is causing the issue, any ETA would be a bit of a shot in the dark.

I suspect that individual developers haven’t made any comments about it here because this is all “official company communications”, and they’re too busy trying to fix the problem to get something approved for posting. Although IMHO, the issue is widespread enough to warrant an acknowledgment from the project or team lead – someone who’s familiar enough with what’s going on to say something more substantial than “oops, we’re working on it”, but who isn’t too involved in the actual bug-hunting (because we want that to go faster).
