I am also unable to buy gems and i have been told by customer support that there is a limit of $300 per month to stop fraud and people getting carried away with spending. This $300 limit seems only to work for paypal and saved credit card information. But from what i can tell there is a “cooldown” on how often you can buy gems once you have gone over the $300 limit. For example if it is a new month i can go and buy $300 worth of gems straight away one payment after the other, once i have hit the $300 i need to wait between payments.

Hope this helps explain why you can’t buy gems.

There is a default purchase limit of $300 per 30 days for the “Card on File” purchase option. This purchase limit is there to help players or parents control their spending for the account.
It appears you have almost or already reached the card on file purchase limit for your account. To resolve this issue, simply remove your card on file, and leave it off. I know it’s not as convenient entering your card information each time you wish to make a purchase. However, leaving the card off file means that you will not never hit that card on file purchase limit.

We have just implemented a way for players to remove the card on file from an account. To do this, simply click the trash can icon next to the saved card on file in the Gem Store. Confirm the deletion, and the card will be removed.

Also, if you are receiving an error, it could be because of too many failed attempts within a short time frame.

Please wait a full 24 hours from your last transaction attempt, then try again. For future reference, please keep in mind that too many failed attempts within a short time frame will always result in an error.

Has ArenaNet ever considered adding a Pay By Mobile option for gem purchases? Other ‘F2P’ games use this for people who have issues with credit/debit cards & paypal as well as preferring to just add it to their mobile/cell phone bill. It’s a really popular option in other games that I have seen and could help to alleviate some of these issues. Especially for people who don’t want to put their credit/debit card information online anywhere.

This is absolutely untrue. I would ask to have this removed, but I want it to be clear: We handle our own transactions, and nothing whatsoever has been compromised in any sense. Our Gem Store and the in-game Black Lion Trading Company are operating just fine.

Please do not post rumours, speculation, or bogus “information” in these forums.

If you are talking about the PlaySpan hack, that is incorrect. They have nothing to do with Guild Wars 2’s gem shop.

This is accurate. We do not use PlaySpan.

I’m unable to purchase gems as well. No error. The next button just won’t light up in the credit card info box. It’s not a saved card, but it has worked in the past. All the info in the fields was correct. No Next button.

I did submit at ticket this afternoon.

I am having the same issue, but when I did a ticket for this, they only gave me a 24 hour window to make the purchase, which of course I didn’t get until 48ish hours later… Why have a window in the first place? Just unflag the account… I’d like to get some more character slots but it really is a massive hassle for me and day by day, the enthusiasm for making such a purchase is fading fast…

Hey again, just want to post to update.

I got a response very fast from the guy you escalated it to. He said he’s never seen my problem before and would forward it to the proper department to get it settled near immediately. Problem is, it’s been 2 days with no responses and that charge is still on my checking account.

And it’s not even a completed charge. It’s a charge that’s pending(and keeping my $85 in limbo), and has remained pending since the original date of purchase. I mean I’m glad I got a response and was told that it was a mystery to him, but I’d love some kind of update on the situation. I really want these gems or the refund, because I could use that $85 one way or another.

I don’t have any experience in this area, however I remember reading somewhere (either on reddit or the forums here) that someone had problems with their transaction pending. The solution was to call the bank directly and ask them why it is pending- supposedly some banks are very hesitant to do online purchases for games. You can’t blame them though, credit card fraud has been rampant in the past few years. So if you call them up and ask them what’s causing it to be in limbo, you should get your answer (and possibly your solution.)

Regardless though, wish you the best of luck in getting control of your money again :P

Pending charges can last for up to 5 working days, after which the bank normally fulfils the transaction or refunds the money back to your account if they havent heard anything else from the processing merchant.

Just remember, if the transaction shows as pending, then nobody has the money at the moment. It is simply being held by the bank until verification is sent by the merchant, or the statutory time elapses where they have to refund it.

For those of you who are lacking credit card use due to the 5 account rule here is the response I got when I asked for an update – because of the way things work the newest obviously is at the top.

To give those who don’t want to read 26 pages of this thread some background NCSoft will not let credit cards be used in instances where it has been associated with 5 or more master accounts. This would not have been an issue except for the fact that when you buy GW2 (if bought from the website) your purchase gets assigned a “dummy” account. So for players like me who are long time NCSoft customers who chose to keep game accounts on separate master accounts to lessen the chance of all their games being hacked in one hit this new dummy account put my card on a permanent black list. Of course no one knew there was any type of limit – NCSoft certainly did not advertise it.

I have successfully managed to make purchases using disposable debit cards however this method requires 24 business hrs to process – so I buy the card then cannot use it for 1 business day after the purchase – and I pay 30% of the card’s value as an access fee. So to buy $50 of gems requires me to pay $65.

I’d be interested to know how this compares to gem cards – and if they are ever going to sell them here.

Hi,

Thanks again for the reply. I had a look at your other ticket (120828-002426). The situation that you were encountering in that ticket is a little different that the restrictions on using a card on 5 different accounts. What was happening in your other ticket was that you were triggering one of our internal rules meant to detect and prevent fraud. This rule was triggered due to your initial declined attempts with that card and the representative waived the rules that were stopping the payment. This is a feature that is a “by account” rule and not a global rule. Also this is likely not a problem you will run into in the future now that you have successfully used that card.

(Note: Support actually told me in the other ticket I was going to need the special waiver every I wanted to purchase gems.)

The 5 account rule, however, is Global. Meaning, we couldn’t make a change on one account without lifting these restrictions on all accounts in the account database. This is why we are unable to make changes to this rule on individual accounts.

I’ve appreciated your patience and level head thus far in regards to what is surely a frustrating situation. Of course, please let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks for the reply. Currently there hasn’t been a new update to this issue and I can not say with any confidence that this issue will be resolved soon as I do not have any ETA as to when this will be addressed. I noticed in a previous reply you had asked about the usability of PrePaid credit cards. I did want to confirm that this option will work. One thing that you might run into trouble with using those type of cards will be using the “save card on file” feature from within the Guild Wars 2 Store. This marks any future charges as a recurring charge, and those type of cards will typically not accept recurring charge. The easy way around this is just to not save the card on file for future use and you should not ever have any problems.

Hi,

We do not have an update regarding a fix for this credit card limitation. The system change request has been escalated to the Developement Team, but this is all we can do at this point. I understand that they are toying with some ideas, but nothing is set in stone. All we can do is wait until we hear that the Developement Team has decided to make changes to the way the billing system works. We can keep this ticket in progress if you would like, and update it if we hear more information.

I have done that. We will let you know of any changes that they make.

Because you seem to be the one keeping a close eye on this thread I would like to ask you a specific question. Earlier I had issues buying gems on the gem store. To make a long story short I was eventually able to purchase them for a short 24 hour time ( as per a e-mail from you guys)

So now my question is basically, does this still stand?!?!? Can I purchase gems now? Or am I still flagged???

We don’t always know why someone is “flagged” but we are happy to work with that person to make it possible to purchase gems. Just update your ticket (or start a new one if you have lost track of the old one) to ask for another 24-hour authorization.

We are sorry that this measure is necessary for some people, but we’ll do our best to address the matter quickly and appreciate everyone’s understanding (not to mention support of the game ).

I keep getting card approval failed when I try to buy gems. I emailed the support team on Sunday 14th, they misunderstood and thought I wanted to buy a copy of the game. It’s been clarified and I’m told that my problem has been escalated to a payment review team. I got that email on the 15th and still haven’t heard anything.

I’m getting a little impatient. I don’t mind waiting for the problem to be resolved but I would like to know how long I’m expected to wait so I know they haven’t just lost my emails.

I created a thread over a month ago about the following issue, but I never received an official response.

I do not own the game yet, but I was curious about the following:

Prior to the first official weekend beta test there was a hush-hush closed weekend beta. During this test we were offered $25 of the gem currency for helping test the purchasing/credit card transaction process.

How do I redeem this once I buy the game?

I’m assuming it’s okay to talk about this since the game is released now.
