We had fun on the piken borderland
to sad that directly after the last door a pulk of 10 guys came and wiped us <.<
End of the boring match up . W e have to learn how to play after the noobs
Greetings from a GH thief, residing mostly around SM.
Here I present to you some interesting screenshots:

Can’t say it’s a guild we know of on Piken, but we’ll check around. If he’s up to no good we’ll sort it out, we don’t stand for any dodgy shenanigans here.
That was fun for us We killed all except that golem, and guy inside don’t notice enemy behind at all for some time. At the end he escaped, we don’t kill him or maybe some random do it.
Nope, he knew you you was there, We just thought it was riverside and not piken.
Was only around 5 of us and half escaped.
Thanks for making the last night of this match-up memorable GH. The Asura army invasion kinda threw us! Good luck in your next match.
Here’s some footage from last night!
A lot of Horrifying cruelty was done to asura last night. So for our sensitive viewers all that has been removed leaving only bliss and happy feelings.
When you’ve been thoroughly beaten and outclassed by the opposition, as Gunnar’s Hold has this week, the key is to go have fun however you can.
This was the first GH ‘Mini Night’, and it didn’t quite go as well as previous theme nights – we had a lot of very low levels, a poor mix of classes, not appropriately geared, and most of us not playing classes we were particularly comfortable or experienced in playing.
Despite this, and getting mugged constantly by VII (props to you guys – seriously good players) we had a great laugh. It may be contrary to those that take their WvW seriously, and lots of us do too, but I would highly recommend a night of levity once in a while. Seeing a mass of Asura running around would bring a smile to the saddest of faces.
Thanks to the Riverside group on centre island that cheered and bowed us – we appreciated the acknowledgement. It was our intention to come fight you but we had to rush to Bay to get wiped!
We did actually take some targets, we did actually wipe a few groups, and we sowed the seeds for future mini nights. We need a few more guardians and warriors next time!
i like to thank Gunnar for the nice fights and i am really impressed that you never give up an put some good fights up.
i wish you good luck with your next matchup and a lot of fun
Had alot of fun last night with the Asuran army. We would have bought more… but we got a queue
I did learn two things last night:
1) Thieves are boring to play in comparison to my warrior
2) Radiation Field is my new favourite skill
Hope the PS guilds didn’t mind the blob we bought and enjoyed our mini loot bags. We were mainly uplevelleds (alot <10) or on alts we don’t normally play so there wasn’t alot of ability in our group haha.
Hmmm, I thought it was one of those standard “haha we got your tick to 0 GG” posts.
Well, from my understanding, it was such a post. But shouldn’t we all be grown up enough to accept a little non-offensive smack talk without taking it as an insult? (Comment not necessarily directed at you.)
Commie Terra did actually work quite hard for these 0ppt. While getting down to 20ppt wasn’t too difficult once Piken’s defenses had been broken down, the final ppt were a little bit tricky since Piken’s commando squads kept capping back supply camps. So there was actually some fair share of organization and splitting across four maps necessary to actually get the counter down to zero.
However, it was fun, and you should try doing it yourself when you have the opportunity. Beside that it was merely our spontaneous “project of the morning”, nothing too serious about it.
Anyway, ze Germans knew what they where doing. They took the opportunity to do this on a Swedish national holiday. We cant control WvW every day, especially not when drunk and/or hungover
I am almost 100% sure that nobody in the field was aware of that fact. In Germany, the knowledge of Swedish national holidays is far less solid than the Swedes might rightfully expect.
There is something to admire about Riverside’s “we will play the game how we enjoy it, and there isn’t anything you can say to stop us” attitude. A big fat middle finger to the elitest guild attitude you so often see on these boards.
And that’s actually the perfect way of describing the experience of the match-up this week. I completely agree, thanks for putting it that way.
(to be continued …)
Guess it comes down to the fun vs points mentality.
Personally, I am one of those guys who cherishes the objective-based “World-v-Worlds part” of WvW. I couldn’t care less whether I win or loose individual duels, I fight to win a war! When our world is in the offensive, I like to manage supply lines and to solidify defenses just as much as I like to be on the front, subduing enemies and building/manning siege to break through your walls or arrow cart batteries. When we are in defense, I like to defend supply camps and structures, man said defenses, and smile while us few defenders foil you offensive plans.
And this, all together, results in fun (for me). You could put this as “playing for the points” but, for me, this is rather “playing for the map”. I like to look at the maps (and the upgrade status of our structures) to get confirmation whether we are actually doing fine in the war. The ppt or the overall score is merely a proxy for the success of our play and not necessarily the prime objective.
Having said that, I do understand that there are folks who would like to have it the other way around: Ignore the World-v-Worlds part and just enjoy the PvP duels. And I am all for giving those folks a playground where they can duel as much as they like. (Maybe even on a special WvW map where they won’t be disrupted by random players unintentionally spoiling their fun.) But, currently, I am still under the impression that they are a vocal minority that want to play a very different game like the rest of us on the very same map, and they maybe even want to play quite a different game than the one ANet intended WvW to be.
A genuine question to those RS who steamrolled our borderland late yesterday afternoon. Do you actually enjoy romping over half your number in easymode capping of T1 structures?
I wasn’t there, but I think this in not completely a matter of “easymode” oder WXP (although it may be just that for a larger part of players on ANY server). Also, this surely isn’t intended to be “mean” to a weaker server. This is, in fact, a strategic necessity to win the war. If you want to protect your (upgraded) structures, you have to force upon your opponent where the front line is. If you hold, say, Durios, and your opponent holds Ogrewatch, then the next battle may take place on either side of the border. By trashing your opponents tower on a regular basis (ideally as soon as it is recapped) while upgrading yours to the maximum (and adding an arrow cart, or two, or ten) you have forced the front to be your opponents T0 tower. She now has to invest a lot of effort to rebuild that tower. This means that even if your forces are evenly matched (or you are in a slight disadvantage), you have lots of time and opprortunity to retake that tower while yours is easy to defend. Doing so, your own part of the makitten afe (<— m.a.p—i.s—s.a.f.e, rotfl), and you are winning tick-by-tick.
Nevertheless, breaking into an undefended T0 tower is far from epic, and not really a satisfying experience. The fight that you remember most are the sieges that last for hours, where your success comes in very small steps (and is sometimes waging back and forth), and only by organizing to cope with the parallel side objectives leads to the final victory. And the fun thing is, these battles are memorable regardless whether you are on the winning or loosing side of the siege.

So now it’s become a derogatory term to have big blobs? They seem to be darn successful. It might prove Piken’s individual players are better if they can win despite being outmanned, but they aren’t winning right now. Your personal 2v2 victories don’t get you to win until Friday. So, for the love of god, please stop trying to prove who’s got the bigger blobs. The devs said that there’s too much focus on zerging (and I completely agree), and reading Devon Carver’s blog post, we can safely assume that will change over time. Until then: Don’t blame any server (collectively, mind you) for zerging if you agree that it’s powerful. It’s in the game, it works, and if 100vX means that 100 will survive (and the others be sent back to their respective waypoints), of course the people over at RS will use it.
If having a bigger blob means victory then you will blob.
Sun Tzu said that, and I think he knows a little more about fighting than you do, pal.
So true that I just had to quote it again. Also, the right opportunity to quote my favorite Sun Tzu message for all zerg haters:
“It is the rule in war, if our forces are ten to the enemy’s one, to surround him; if five to one, to attack him; if twice as numerous, to divide our army into two. If equally matched, we can offer battle; if slightly inferior in numbers, we can avoid the enemy; if quite unequal in every way, we can flee from him. Hence, though an obstinate fight may be made by a small force, in the end it must be captured by the larger force.” — Sun Tzu’s Art of War, Chapter 3.8-3.11
I guess what he wanted to say was:

darn zergs, u suckx kittens !!!1!

Awesome night in Piken.
The Ant Army invasion from Gunnars was very fun. Tks for that and gz for ur server
I might probably not be able to log on before reset, so I would like to thank both Piken and Riverside for fights, both those good and those less good ;-).
I support what I said earlier – both Piken and Riverside have roaming parties, sized 3-5. Maybe it was my luck, but we met much more roaming parties from Riverside than from Piken.
If I failed to get some guild names properly, apologies. During the fight I am focused on survival mostly :D.
From a roamer operating in 1-5 people party, special thanks to:
Riverside:
- Mithrandir guild, notably a ranger I met yesterday. Nice 1 vs 1, as a ranger you could have escaped any time if you wanted (besides, rangers have it hellishly hard vs mesmers). /bow
- Virtual Masters guild. We had some interesting fights, mostly in last ticks in Piken camps ;-). Great reaction time and timing to get points to tick :-). Hope we could give you as much hell as you gave us. /bow
- [ZdF] (Zinkel der Finsternis?). We met you many times and no matter if we won or lost, we had fun. Thank you for the game. /bow
- Druckwelle. What to say? Strong, competent, efficient, deadly. Nice meeting you. /bow.
- Legendary Nonames. In all our meetings we were dominating (3-4 vs 2). Still, even outmanned, you were dangerous and slippery. /bow.
Piken:
- War Inc guild. I never saw you in large groups and you are really good and skilled enemies to fight. I will remember you very fondly. Hope we meet again ;-). /bow
- Forsaken Gamers. Oh yes, we met you many times. You don’t seem to use more people than needed to do a job which led to quite memorable battles against our team. And you are very skilled, too. Special shout to FG guardian commander and The Moon Tree necromancer who killed us (2 vs 2) yesterday morning. We got a bit too reckless and needed that lesson :D. /bow
- Good Game (?) guild. We met you several times and had some good fights in the process. Many fights, too many to mention. /bow
To both Piken and Riverside:
I would like to thank a lot to the other guilds and mixed guild parties we met, killed and died to.
Smaller parties were fun to fight against.
Larger groups taught us how to be slippery and evade them ;-).
Nothing like a thrill of trying to get that Briar in 4 people (or Crag), knowing we can get annihilated anytime, or “3 min 30 seconds! Run to Astral, ignore all! We can make it before tick!”
To be honest, if you met a (mixed) team of [MM] and [Drgr], numbered 2-5 and you were between 1 and 8, no matter the result… I thank you very much. You made this matchup really enjoyable :-).
Good luck in your future matchups! In this one, I had fun.

Yes sorry I worded that badly.
By “fun” I should have put “Fights”. Those players who prefer to roam the maps looking for x vs y battles and improving themselves individually. If there happens to be a good fight available by taking a structure they’ll go for it.
By “points” I mean those players who will do whatever they an to keep/take the objective. So while defending they may well get a much better fight by pushing out of the tower, but there is the risk that they will wipe and hence lose the tower so they don’t. Of course the players who play this way enjoy themselves, or they wouldn’t play anymore
Myself I am somewhere in between. Come Friday there aren’t many better feelings than looking at the score and seeing you’re leading/holding 2nd by just a few thousand points, and you know its been a really god job well done that week.
But while playing I much prefer to fight in a great battle or partake in an epic siege attack/defence than pvd through a bl.
I think the balance should be found depending on the scores. If you’re running away with the win or have no chance of changing position then you get alot more license to actually enjoy the fights instead of turtling inside. On the flipsie you’d end up annoying 3/4 of your server if in a really tight match you lose a T3 structure because you were too busy fighting near the centaurs to get back to defend it.
I wasn’t there, but I think this in not completely a matter of “easymode” oder WXP

Thanks for your response
That answers the question perfectly. And yes I do agree that often the best form of defence is attack. This is something that is alot more viable in the lower tiers where your enemy can’t fill all 4 maps. So often the best way to end a long siege of your T3 hills/bay is to send a team to flip the northern keeps an towers on their map.
Agree with you 100% there and i don’t think you’ll find many that don’t. One of my most memorable moments in recent matches was in one of our Dz/RoS battles. We just managed to push a big Dz force out of our inner hills and we didn’t have much supply to put on the walls/gates. However it was about 98% fortified, and I think Dz realised this so we ended up having both zergs trying to protect/kill the dolyaks coming out of water / astral. Fortunately in the end we managed to get two in from water while they were tied up in combat in a 3way north of hills.
(quotes shortened for char count)
Ending this matchup all I have to say is: both servers we played against changed since I last met them. Riverside seems to go strong using and abusing every single arrowcart spot possible. DTK is running more numbers than ever and the coordination of megablobs is still crappy as following solo players across the map is regular. As for Piken: the only server I looked up to so far but that changed this week. Still a lot of strong guilds but the dynamic exclusive playstyle is now lost. No solo roamers, no small groups, no honor or glory. The blobs you formed against Gunnar’s with the excuse that RS outnumbered you were pathetic and the fact that your infantry started running in towers and arrowcarting the life out of people is just sad. I remember someone advising Gunnar’s not to turn into mini-riverside and here we are…
Shoutouts to INC whom I’ve seen the most without the blob around. Some of the solo players and small groups of PS for the nice fights and the asura ranger who fought me for minutes last night. Your luck is I never stomp people after a good fight
Also to all the RS players for letting me use all my gap closers just to see you unite with a blob of 70. Feel sorry for [GH], your ethics in fights changed for the worse. Fighting outmanned upscaleds on GHBL just because it has your tag in its name is sad, being a guild that plays “for fights”.
Finally to Gunnar’s Hold: all my respect to everyone who played this week! We gave them hell of a fight and I think we showed them how well we can play and that we don’t give up! Loving the Gunnar’s attitude and fighting spirit. To me we are the winners of this matchup! Keep this up always!
Good luck to everyone for next week and thank you or this one
- Forsaken Gamers. Oh yes, we met you many times. You don’t seem to use more people than needed to do a job which led to quite memorable battles against our team. And you are very skilled, too. Special shout to FG guardian commander and The Moon Tree necromancer who killed us (2 vs 2) yesterday morning. We got a bit too reckless and needed that lesson. /bow
was it a small human female guardian or more like a big female norn?
anyways it could have been me xD. i cant say it because i have way to many fights in a night to remember not rly special ones. sry ^^
i had some fun this matchup too and even when i hate that RS comes to PvD in the morning or uses 1mio ACs. Everything was better then fighting AR or BB again. (18weeks almost always AR and dunno how long BB)
Also just a tip to the RS guys who played PS BL on Wednesday.
1. You took our upgraded Bay…our mistake to not have a scout. but i rly did not understand what that try to defend was…
We had a mesmer inside portaling us to the north hill, where we made some Trebs and waited to get all people in. A fast reaction from you guys sitting in inner bay would have killed us.
After a time you guys came out and we stood ready on the top of the stairs to kill everyone who wants to push up…questions: why did you run out of bay?
and who had the idea of a portalbomb?
i dont know but you rly thought that a portal right at the spot where we already were aiming at would work?
Anyways i remember 3 more trys on that evening where you wanted to portalbomb us. I really hope you guys learned that portalbombs are only a way to die fast
anyways, i think your bunker tactic with tones of ACs gave us a lot of trouble and a lot of people were rageing about it, also me from time to time ^^ (i hate useing trebs )
Congratz to winning this round.
GH: nice roaming groups/ solo players You reminded me a lot of times that i finally have to level my ele. My guardian with gear and spec for zergs is maybe not the right char to fight against you guys ^^
As the week comes to an endi want also to pay my respect to both Riverside and Pike Square. I am not gonna follow the discussion about blobs, ac and stuff.
To Riverside, you guys are a really strong defensive server and i am saying this as a compliment as i am a defensive oriented player, i met some really good solo players and some very well organised guilds.
To Piken you guys, have way more numbers than back at November where we faced you. But the quality some of your guilds bring to battlefield is impressive. VII, FG, SFRJ, WAR and many more are awesome.
As for my server i think we did very weel, we were a good mood and i think some times we made you guys forget that we are a t7 server.
Congratulations to Riverside for the win and i personally had a lot of fun this week.
Summary of this thread:
I "lol"ed hard
Overall I had fun this week besides 1 or 2 nights of frustration :P
Both sides we faced had two very different and valid play styles.
Piken you have excellent open field guilds that more than once made me want to curl up in a corner XD
Riverside you have really got it down using siege both defensively and offensively. I felt like a pin cushion more than once this match :P
So thanks all for an interesting matchup Hope the RNG gods give us all a more balanced match come reset

by the way. we had realy great fun yesterday on pikenborderland.
especialy in the start we where truly a guild grp with no rnds at all.
We had good fights against VII, Hob, Sparta and WiC.
Yes, not one of us matched us in size, but you launched some great comboatacks on us.
Also we had 2 Fightsagainst the Asura Army. Realy funny , but there where so many uplevled guys in you, getting rally was not so hard ^^

Our main goal of these nights are to have fun and try to introduce new players to WvW. This week we had a better turn out than we had to Heavy night (Only Guardians and Warrior) last week.
I am not even sure if the reason most of my abilities did not go of was because of lag or me giggling to much to press my skills XD.
Hope you all enjoyed the mini loot bag going away gifts we gave you

Yeah, quite a few of us don’t normally play Asura toons, or decided to re-roll one of a different class just to take part in the fun
Sorry for all the ankle biting I did record quite a bit of it last night, however I’ve not had a chance to preview and sort the files. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to do that over the weekend and post it up.
Thank you to both RS and PS, I’ve had an enjoyable week of WvW!
Next week, Vizunah and Elona!
Probably won’t get a chance to play now until reset… so thanks to everyone we’ve faced. Been some excellent fights.
Really been glad to go toetotoe with Piken again… especially VII. You guys were awesome then, and are awesome now <3.
Nice to meet you RS, and congratulations on your win. Well deserved. Nice to see a server win with humility as well – maybe you could teach some of our lower tier friends a thing or two in this respect
I want GH back and I want it now!
If you dont come, I will have to x-fer!
Hey Zumy
Hopefully we’ll be faced together soon
Well it’s been a hell of a week, we were on the back foot almost from the get go. We fought as hard as we could for as long as we could and I’m proud to have been a part of it.
To everyone on Gunner I fought beside, and died beside………mostly died beside to be honest, I salute your grit, your determination and your tenacity. To our commanders who struggled all week to bring us together a special thank you. To our WvW guilds who kept the pressure on the Borderlands and helped keep them off our back in EB.
It was nice to see plenty of old guilds from my WAR day’s HoB, VII and I’m sure I saw VoP in there as well.
Thank you to our enemies this week we learnt a lot and that will stand us in good stead.
We did our best ……… can’t ask for more than that.
Hey Zumy
Hopefully we’ll be faced together soon
Yesyes pliiiiiis!
I will bring the milk! And oreos. Everybody likes milk and oreos!
i know i’m going to get flamed for writing this but i still need to know.
Why would Piken need 25ish invaders and 6 golems (yes i did say 6) to take on 15 people in GH BL at 1pm on a friday afternoon? All the places you took were T1. you could have easily PVdoored your way in.
Your own BL is 1/2 owned by RS, yet you feel the need to karma train through our BL. I thought more of PS than this.

I woud flame you myself for that but this week I consider it playing for the LOLs anyway. Pikens, you where great as allways, Riverside… not so much.

(oh and a small thnx to the little bit of GH guys as well, though you were outmanned)
RS, from a Pikeneer, I applaud your siege usage. You guys know when and where to put them down so they can act as suppression weapons against us, pinning us down and effectively relocating our forces elsewhere, or better yet taking our attention off objectives.
I can’t say for GH yet since I’ve only been in combat with them for once, but best of luck to them and have fun, since I’ve heard they were outmanned most of the time.
Didn’t really enjoy this week if I’m being honest.
Had some fun fights vs Piken.
Against RS we were either steamrolled by insane numbers or they ran away if approximately even. Thats not necessarily a reflection on the entire server, just what I experienced when I played. I don’t go EB but I heard many positive comments about RS, so well played to RS this matchup
Yesterday evening, I did chuckle in our Garrison when Piken were setting up superior cats. I was the ele doing 1-man suicide runs to attack them. Out of 3-4 runs you guys got me down once. For all the difference it made – you owned the property shortly after. It was funny seeing RS turn up as well for that fight, we wondered if you guys would neutralise each other but it didn’t happen.
However, I had very bad skill lag and later decided I’d had enough. Very large number of Pikens in our north supply camp but having to waiting several seconds to get off key abilities was too frustrating. Logged, did some music, played Neverwinter for a while.
Cheers to both Piken and RS for this week.
I am deeply suspicious that ArenaNet’s matchup method, despite what they say in public, is actually just a battered D20 and a set of old D & D Dungeon Master lookup tables.

They did the right thing by perturbing the scores to do the match-ups. This is actually (mathematically) necessary to allow the ratings from different tiers to be comparable. It’s just the deviation that needs to be toned down a bit. I see this coming as a simple fix in the near future.

(edit:) And If they would be actually using DM tables, I am confident they would use them in the exact way everyone of us had: Do a fake die roll behind your screen to soothe the players, and then just choose most mean or funny item on the table.

i’d like to thank GH & PS for the fights this week
@Gunnars – i was really impressed what you guys delivered and how you stepped up your game during the week…..outnumbered nearly all the time , never giving up – that’s the spirit , kudos – actually i was never that impressed by any server since beta
@PS – me and my 5 man gang had some decent 5vs5 fights , thx for the sportsmanship shown…….the wanna be pro attitude and hypocrism displayed by some of you just makes your server look bad……well w/e floats your boat
gl & hf in your next matchup every1
This week has been uhh.. educational. Had some fun here n there, but i really hope to never see u guys or ur arrowcarts again (nothing personal) Grats on the win RS n gl to u all in next weeks match-up

Lets just say they were a little over-enthusiastic then. If they tone it down I’ll be a little kinder to/about them

… you didn’t used to be one of my players by any chance did you?
It has been fun, hard work and a lot of learning. Thanks to all who played. I make 1 exception: The Piken thief who killed me in EB jumping puzzle a while ago. I hope you felt really big the first time, (while I was afk, wiping my daughters bottom!!) I got back just in time to see my toon die:). And yes it is really silly to try and do a JP in PvP territory while looking after a 4 yr old. And no, the bad jumping ws all my own. Cheers guys.
