I have same issue as Nessarose, above. I created a new character and lost all of my HOM points and titles. I have 30/50 HOM points. Prior to this I had not been affected by any HOM issues as I had unlocked everything before the bug awarding HOM 50/50 to random people. I tried to fix this by logging into GW and talking to the historian in HOM there but it didnt fix it.

Matchmaking is utterly broken

The title says it all. I would rather just have random matchmaking than what we have now. Its driving me to quit this game, as a player with over 3000 games played getting matched up with complete beginners. You need to put more experienced players in a pool together. Otherwise my choices are run with a full group all the time or not pvp.

Top questionable decision Anet have made.

1. The promotion of zerg mechanics in WVW, which includes full credit for minimal contribution on kills and the rally system (which makes zerg busting almost impossible).
2. The continued performance problems and lag in large scale WVW, which has only gotten worse.
3. Removing the solo que in sPVP.
4. Failing to act faster on major exploits, which included people farming bugged karma events at the beginning of the game and then turning around and converting that karma to huge amounts of gold, people exploiting the southsun cove event to get multiple precursors, etc.
5. Fractals update actually making fractals worse. Promising a fractal weapon box and then failing to deliver.
6. Promoting this as a game where “support” was a viable way to spec your character but then failing to deliver viable support specs.
7. Failing to come up with a viable solution for the population imbalances in WVW.
8. Failing to come up with a reward system for playing WVW that is more closely comparable to playing PVE in terms of skins, gold or titles.

Concerned about Toxic PvP Players

The problem is with Arenanet and the matchmaking system. You have total beginners being put into matches with experienced players in ranked play. The experienced players know what they are doing, and want to win. The beginners don’t have a clue and don’t even realize that they are singlehandedly causing the rest of their teammates to lose a match. Many of them think that they are playing well. Mind you, matches don’t immediately pop, so one total noob que’ing for a rated match can essentially steal 15-20 minutes of the time from his four teammates.

What do you expect the experienced players to do? Of course they are going to flame the person who is in a venue they really aren’t skilled enough to be in. That is their only way of dealing with the situation other than running in a full premade for every game. Unlike some other games, their is no mechanism to provide feedback or downvote players who clearly shouldn’t be in rated, who afk, etcetera.

Until A-net fixes matchmaking this will continue to be a problem, driving both new and experienced players away from PVP because of this clash of skill levels.

PvP changes are terrible need transparent MMR

I agree the matchmaking is a problem. Experienced players are being put in games with total beginners. Lower rated players need to be matched to lower rated players. Higher rated players should likewise play together. Right now the system doesn’t seem to do that. That may require having pools of players based on MMR – high, medium and low for example and then when you do well in the lower pool you move up to medium, etc.

The other issue is the fact that total beginners are not penalized for losing. They lose over and over yet never lose points, and can grind up the leaderboard, while “higher” rated players lose points for losses. They system is skewed to favor the low low rated player. In other words, all the the lowest ranked players have to do is grind out games, since there is rarely a penalty to them for losing. Everyone else has to worry about taking a loss and losing points. All you have to do is look at the leaderboards to see there isn’t sufficient penalty to lower rated players for losing.

They really need to make your chance of losing points dependant on the systems rating of your chance of winning. So if you have a 10% chance to win, you have a 10% chance to take a loss in points if you lose. If you have a 60% chance to win, you have a 60% chance to take a loss in points if you lose. The way the system is now, the “higher” rated players (however that is calculated) always seem to lose points on a loss, while the lowest rated players have no real disincentive to lose — they just move on to grind out another game hoping to be carried.

PvP Leaderboards still suck

I noticed from the last lb change it’s easier to lose points in the lb.

Problems are two:

1) LB is now corrupted because there are people who gained hundred of points in the first week with the old system.

2) At the beginning of the season if you have an average/good mmr instead of bad mmr, you’re in a bad spot because queue length punishes you in relation on games / hour. And we see how the alternative to give the same MMR for all at beginning created a lot of issues in quality match, really worst than now. So i dunno honestly how to solve this issue.

The leaderboard is more broken now than last time. Frankly its insulting to good players to see people with sub-50% win rates sitting at the top of the boards from exploiting a bug from the first week and just farming games regardless of win rate. The matchmaking system is still horrible as well. The group composition of half the games im in consists of absolutely no point holders on one team and then the other team will have as many as three. With the matchmaking this bad, the only way to get a balanced group is to either hope people switch characters or to run only in a full premade.

Solution to fix the population imbalance

in WvW

Absinthe.9538

Having played a number of other open world pvp games, here are my suggestions to improve population balance in GW2. Mind you, some of them would require significant changes in the game mechanics, but I believe that they are at least worthy of discussion. IMO, at this point, significant upgrades to game mechanics are necessary to fix WvW.

There are a number of different problems that cause popluation imbalances, so I will categorize them by the problems I perceive:

1. Realm discouragement: Underpopulated realms become discouraged which has a snowball effect, exacerbating the population imbalances. In GW2 this is caused by some of the core mechanics. That means three things:

(1) eliminate the downed state, or at a minimum, the rally mechanic, in WvW. This is the single largest problem that prevents zerg busting. The core rally mechanic heavily favors the side with the larger group. It is not designed for fights where one side has more players, it is designed for sPVP. Now matter how many get downed, they end up getting rallied by one downed player on the underpopulated side. This discourages attempts to fight larger groups. There are different ways this could be accomplished (ie. permanently getting rid of it, or just getting rid of the rally for sides that don’t have the outmanned buff). This one change alone would re-invigorate the game;

(2) make WXP gained by your contribution to the fight (either in the form of damage, mitigation or healing) a.l.a. successful games like DAoC or WAR. There is no reason a person who has contributed a single hp of damage should get full WxP for a player kill while another who has done 90% of the damage receives the same WxP, and is not rewarded for their larger contribution. With the current mechanic, there is absolutely no incentive not to zerg. You get the same WxP for minimal contribution, so why not run in the safety of a large group, knowing that you get the same WxP for essentially making a minimal contribution. This would discourage zerging, and encourage small group play – i.e. larger contribution. Most people want to run in smaller groups and this would encourage people to get out and fight even when their realm is outmanned.

(3) Reduce the PPT contribution for all objectives when the map is relatively empty. In other words, make PPT scale down when the map has a low population (generally in the middle of the night for the server). This would make the underpopulated servers able to compete with the servers that have night shift (PVdoor) players. Prime time will once again matter. As it currently stands, many servers do well, or better than the highly populated servers in prime time, but simply cannot compete during the off hours. Make PPT scale down significantly during hours where the map is severely underpopulated.

2. Server Transfers: The problem here is players and guilds jumping servers to the flavor of the month server because it has a higher population:

(1) Make transfers from high population servers free, and/or incentivize movement from high population servers to lower population servers. This could be done in the form of WXP bonuses, consumables, abilities, etc.

(2) Prohibit or severely limit movement to high population servers. Make a longer delay from when a player moves to a higher population server to when that player can enter WvW for that server.

3. WvW Rewards: The problem here is that WvW rewards simple cannot compete with the rewards players get from participating in the PVE side of the game. They simply don’t come close. Implement exclusive WvW skins, better drops, more gold per hour, better titles, etc. Its simple economics, you have to incentivize WvW better.

I have the current Living Story episodes in my journal but I cannot initiate even part 1 (story mode). I have been down to the docks in LA where it is supposed to start but there is no one to trigger the story mode to begin. Yes I have a level 80 character. No I do not have mail in my mailbox to trigger anything. I tried creating a brand new character but that didnt help. I did the story with a friend in his instance but that didnt help. 3 days have passed and no response from customer service. Any suggestions?
