Well right now they seem to be going in the opposite direction with all the visual nerfs but either way I think you underestimate the effort required to rewrite the game for another graphical API.
I just logged in and saw my mesmer’s chaos armor. What are you thinking ANET?! This looks absolutely ridiculous. In what possible way does this help with being able to see things in battle? Most you should’ve done is lower the purple contrast a bit not make it look like some silly near invisible egg. Please have some common sense and make changes that are sensible and not just downright lazy. I heard Colin’s response but he doesn’t seem to realize that people aren’t changing their mind about wanting less visual noise, they just wanted visuals modified so that they wouldn’t interfere in fights. No one asked for an absolute gutting of the graphical appeal of the game. My mind is absolutely blown right now how they can continue to do this. None of the changes that were made that I’ve seen addressed the ACTUAL problem areas. Not to mention gutting it this much actually makes things worse because you still want to be able to SEE these skills.
Also not sure why people are asking for a complex slider. A simple on/off toggle would do until ANET frees up some resources so that they can put some actual effort into these things. I was planning on buying HoT around christmas but as silly as it sounds I’m pretty put off by this and might wait till I see how things go in the future.

Reading over many of those it seems like there’s a lot of micromanagement of the creative talent. I think anyone with common sense can see why this is bad management. CEO also seems to be focusing on roles that CEO’s are not supposed to be focused on.(details vs long term strategy)
I agree but it kinda goes against what a lot of people want for the game(exclusive gear) but personally I don’t mind a more hardcore endgame journey for gear if it’s varied, worth it, and isn’t completely rng. Doesn’t hurt if there’s a lot of different types and methods to get it as well to make it less tedious. I don’t understand why people are so against “grinds”. All mmos are are grinds kitten . What matters is making the grind enjoyable. Seems like everyone wants to be a winner with no challenge or effort nowadays. I don’t want participation awards I want something that shows I’ve learned to play well. I say this as a casual player that only plays on weekends.
Were you under the impression that ANET was a gaming charity? Are they not allowed to advertise their service? This is a gross overreaction. So easy for people to be armchair critics when they aren’t the ones trying to run the business. I see no ethical issue with advertising something they’ve had for a long time. It’d be different if you HAD to pay to get gold. However, you don’t.
I wish i was here 3 years ago:) ppl respecting each other, excited about a game, that was soooo sweet:) Gravedigging old topic, yup i know, but felt like i have to do this:) and yet. It seems, that it’s still actual, in most cases:)
It’s all still true for me for the most part. At least in open world.
Gliders in Tyria .. will it ever happen ? [Merged]

jumping puzzles aren’t the main issue I don’t think. Many areas that are visible but technically out of reach have no ground or collision substance so the fact that gliders would be able to reach there would cause problems. They’d have to take a lot of time to inspect each map/put up invisible walls to make sure gliding would work since they weren’t initially designed with gliding in mind. Not impossible but it would take time. There was another thread about this with a lot of good reasons why it wouldn’t be feasible without a lot of effort. I’d like to see it though so hopefully at some point they are able to make gliding available for the core maps.

They would have to redesign the core maps entirely to allow it since gliding would allow access to places not previously reachable, trivialize jumping puzzles, etc.
It’s not leeching if it doesn’t affect you at all. If anything they would only gain karma if they helped. Are you losing anything by free players gaining karma? If not, what’s so annoying or unfair about it? Stop crying that you had to buy the game 3 years ago and now people get the core portion for free. Free players still can’t play HoT among other restrictions.
yea im still waiting for an official response ): i want my awesome visuals back
I’m not counting on it. As of late ANet’s response to any negative feedback is to clam up and hope it goes away on its own. They’re somehow even less transparent than Valve.
Not only is Anet hoping feedback on this topic goes away, I’m beginning to think Anet wants casual older players to go away as well, especially since Anet already has their money. Hardcore raiders and future esport players who will likely welcome the visual changes are being catered to here.
Anet knows perfectly well it’s shooting itself in the foot with older casual players. They don’t care. A constant stream of free-to-play turned paid players will not only support Anet’s revenue stream, but eventually through attrition no one will remember what the old visuals even looked like.
At least until they fail at esports which they will because this game is simply not suited for it. Not that the pvp isn’t fun but with all the inevitable balance issues I’d be surprised if it ever became a serious esport. They’d have to radically change how builds are set up. And do you think the free to play players coming in will be mostly hardcore? My guess is no. There is always a bigger casual market than hardcore. I don’t even mind hardcore content I just like to have options based on my mood. Visual changes are fine as long as they put some thought into it. An attacks visuals being worthy of it’s effects is important when it comes to seeing what’s going on as well. They can do better than turning a fireball into a matchstick.
Personally I don’t give a darn about my skills looking impressive. I want to be able to see what my enemy is doing, and I am tired of not being able to do just that.
Then go into your graphic options settings and adjust them so you can see your enemy. Do not make other people suffer when you can take care of your simple problem with a setting.
The whole problem is that, even with reduce effect LoD ticked, you still can’t see squat. Get any small group together and the game looks like someone is violently shaking a lava lamp in your face. It is rather selfish to demand that the notion of conveyance be ruined because you want the game to look like a back-lit tie-dye t-shirt is trying to eat your face.
Then you should be telling Anet to address this issue with the settings not breaking every players graphic immersion in the game.
You don’t get it. Your “immersion” is a fickle and irrational thing that is exclusively a you problem. Visual clutter in a game that requires visual cues is an everyone problem. You can get over your attacks not being as flash as you want them to be. Nobody can get over being unable to see.
Function takes precedence over form. The argument you have to make isn’t why it is I should ruin your immersion. It is why you should have the option to ruin everyone’s function.
So what’s wrong with the slider option? It could very well turn down visual effects from others as well as yours from your point of view while maintaining it for others who like it so who cares if someone forgets to turn it off as it wouldn’t ruin your “function” at all. The fact that the current LoD doesn’t do crap IS the problem. Put these new dumbed down graphics in that LoD and you’ll be fine. No one’s asking for anything flamboyant just some reasonable effects matching the degree of the attack for normal play. Besides, since when do you need to see every tiny effect going on in most battles? Immersion is something a lot of players care about especially casual players. No reason to call it fickle and irrational because “you” don’t care as it is just another reason people like to play games. Either way, the issue mainly comes with impact effects and certain fields during hard content and pvp. They don’t need to make all skills with substance look like crap. The problem with the fireball for instance was not it’s size at all. That actually made it easier to see what’s going on. In fact, why have effects at all? Just have numbers pop up out of nowhere with a short description of attack name, damage numbers, and conditions applied. That’s pretty fun.
It is hilarious. Especially with that epic wind up the actual pitch is comical. I’m hoping the sudden change was just a hurried fix for pvp with a plan on implementing the option for it soon after. Do they actually review these things?
I have a lot of hope for this game as it seems much better than most mmos I’ve played with the primary draws being immersion, adventure, etc. However, complete goofs like this make me seriously doubt how long I’m gonna stick with the game or whether I will purchase HoT. I generally don’t mind gameplay changes even if somewhat controversial but changes like this makes me seriously doubt their judgement. I know a toggle is not difficult to implement. At the very most they should have made the complete change for pvp and allowed us to choose in pve so that guild or raid groups could simply make the toggle mandatory for certain content if they wanted to. Why alienate the entire pve crowd with this in the name of pvp when it’s unnecessary? Seems pretty unanimous that people are against this so I hope they listen and don’t get too overzealous about this esports stuff and end up ruining aspects of the game completely unrelated to pvp as they potentially have with this.
The bigger picture that nobody is paying attention to here is the the culture of Anet employees harassing and bullying the players. The fast that team leads and people you EXPECT to be protecting the customers are the ones involved.
I’m no veteran so I don’t know about the past so much but I read what anet said about this particular case and don’t see any bullying or harassing. All they did was condemn their actions and from what I’ve heard rightfully so. If I was anet I would want my player base to know that I didn’t approve and imply greater care would be taken in choosing testing guilds in the future(maybe also more stipulations in the NDA?). You’re reaction to the devs response seems exaggerated given what they’ve said especially since these aren’t random players but were directly involved in testing with anet(which imo gives them the right to say something).
I think they’re doing it because it can be hard to see what’s going on in pvp(esports) and in big boss fights with all the particle effects and whatnot. They really should make it a toggle though because I think most people really like the effects outside of specific circumstances. I like most do not give a kitten about esports.
I don’t understand what it is you’re complaining about from an mmo standpoint. Sounds like you just want to be “done” with the game. If that’s the case maybe a single player game is more your style. The good thing about mmos in my opinion is that there is always something to do to progress and that once you’ve done those things more content is added later that will fulfill the desire to improve your character. A good mmo is one that doesn’t invalidate past achievements(which anet doesn’t seem to have done) but allows consistent progression through new content.
I’m fairly new to this game(bought it long time ago but only recently had a computer that could play it) and from reading these forums I kind of laugh because just about every other mmo I’ve played is about 10x worse in the ways people are complaining about. Although, I can see that making people passionate about not ruining something good. As a person that tends to sway between casual and hardcore depending on life I can say that this is easily the most fun mmo I’ve played with something for everyone and hope it continues to be popular.
