Problem: Traits are too complicated for new players
Solution 1: Explain traits better ingame
Solution 2: Make them even more complicated by instead of visiting 1 vendor they must now complete 65 different tasks! Tasks that
- are 25 levels higher than the tier it belongs to
- require you to do the Pv? that you otherwise would avoid at all costs
- risk facing ganking hordes
- require going into dungeons under-prepared
- will take hours of map completion for one trait
- involve waiting hours for events in map (thanks to megaservers)
- are downright too bugged to complete
- you get to do over and over again for each alt
either that or
- spend the amount of gold that only someone with an existing level 80 would have +
- spend the amount of skillpoints only someone who’s had a level 80 for many many months would have
Mission: Appeal to New Players Complete!
You know the real problem with this patch.
It’s not that it’s not what people asked for, because just about every change in the patch was asked for at some point. Nor is it that the changes are mostly bad, because most of them seem to be good.
The problem here is a simple one. Over selling. You put something on your website that says FEATURE PATCH, which is good, right. Let’s people know you’re doing stuff.
You spread out the feature patch over three weeks, making people wait for it, when most of it is just the kind of stuff you’d expect from patches all along, or they’re fixes to things that people wanted in the game ages ago.
It’s the PR that caused most of the current issue, not the patch.
If you came up to us, like a person instead of a company trying to promote, and said to us, look, we have a patch coming out, a lot of long overdue updates that we’ve been working on, we’re just playing catch up, so don’t expect too much…and this patch would have gone over a lot better.
This is particularly true because the last feature patch brought us the wardrobe and the mega server, huge changes.
This could have been better handled and given you a lot less grief if you’d lose the whole we need to promote or people won’t love us attitude. They’re appreciate honesty.
Now if you have a reason behind the spread of information, like this keeps us visible on MMO sites, which is good for the game, telling us that’s what you’re doing makes you look good, not bad.
I’m not unhappy with the patch myself. It’s pretty much what I expected it to be, without all the specifics, but this is the type of thing I was expecting. But others were expecting a lot more.
And part of the reason for those heightened expectations is that you oversold the patch. Overselling can be as damaging and not selling enough.
Today I decided to start playing again more actively. I created a new character, used scroll to level 20 and started playing. During first 15 minutes I opened trait panel like 3 times to plan my traits and see where to put my next points only to remember that nothing is available until level 30. Then I remembered that even at level 50 I probably won’t have any meaningful traits available.
Today I decided to stop playing this game actively.
There are several reasons why people complain about berserker.
Let’s pretend that you live in another country than then US which many players do…and even in the US not everyone has the same quality machine or connection. One guy in my guild is in Montana and has satelite. Sometimes the lag makes it impossible for him to time dodges. I’m in Tasmania. I have similar problems…not all the time but sometimes. Often enough to want a bit of toughness and vitality for the hits I might survive.
So now, you basically have a situation where I’m not helping the team enough if I don’t wear berserker, but I’m not helping myself enough if I do. The game won’t be as fun for me.
It’s not always about optimizing your build, because surviving as a berserker means that you have to have a certain level a skill, level of hardware, level of connection. What percentage of players have all three?
So if people then exclude others from their parties based on not having one or the other…how does that create a better game or better community?
Fortunately I’ve joined a guild that’s happy to take anyone into any dungeon with any build they have. And you know…we clear content just fine.
Maybe not as efficiently as the zerker warrior parties, but I’d wager we have as much fun as anyone.
I appreciate the grand experiment that has been the “living story”. And while the idea of there being content updates every two weeks sounds amazing on paper, in practice I have been nothing but underwhelmed. The actual gameplay of the content tends to revolve around tired mini-games, or dynamic events that are slightly different from how they were before.
This latest addition introduce a huge, awe-inspiring tower in the middle of Kessex that cannot be interacted with. We’re introduced to it’s sprawling majesty, and then immediately handed a bucket and sent to collect thingies. Why? Who cares. It’s not like it matters. Maybe you get an achievement. Maybe you unlock a special weapon or armor skin you and a few thousand other people can all have.
It’s not good that I can be introduced to the new content update at 6pm and be tired of it by 9pm. Because after those three hours are up, there’s another two weeks to wait for the next three hours of possible entertainment.
The killer thing is, I can tell that there are cool ideas here, and I know the dev team are trying to deliver on some epic-scale stuff. But the time constraints to get this content out so rapidly means that so many corners have to be cut that by the time we get it, it’s hardly even worth having. I feel that most players appreciate the effort, but the actually enjoyment of the new content is rather muted. A sort of shrugging of shoulders as people realize, oh, okay, more stuff to grind. Yippee.
Speaking only for myself, I’d be perfectly happy with waiting a few extra weeks or months, if the content, when it got here, was really good. Something more complex, something with more options. It just seems that more and more, content is coming out and I’m thinking to myself, this could have done better with a little more time in the oven. I don’t mind the wait, if the payoff is better overall.
This is the part where I’d say I could enjoy myself in WvW in the meantime while I wait, but the WvW guys screwed that up with these awful, awful leagues, but that’s a topic for a different forum.
So how do you guys feel about a Gem Store item called a Transmutation Sapphire which would flip an item to an Account Bound state with a twist?
The idea came to me because I am on the verge of switching main characters. And thought… man… I would really like to transfer these items to my new main:
Chop-It-All Logging Axe
Molten Alliance Mining Pick
Consortium Harvesting Sickle
-
How it would work is that the item would become Account Bound after activating the Sapphire.
As soon as you equip it on a character again, a timer starts ticking down (say 15 mins).
After the duration of the timer expires, the item becomes soulbound to the new character.
I think it would be a great income generator for ArenaNet as well.
What are your thoughts?
If you think it’s a good idea, please upvote my post. Thanks.
The LS has a number of problems that go right down to the conceptual level, frankly, and has done little but worked tirelessly to sabotage this game’s success from day one:
1. It is inconsistent with release content and creates cognitive dissonance with the PS and launch dungeons. Why would all of that be ‘static’ but character-driven when everything since is ‘living’ and development-driven?
2. The fast release cycle without even so much as a test realm means rushed, buggy content, which is just bad for the game’s image/reputation.
3. The constant release-pull-release-pull is a massive development vacuum that perpetually diverts resources away from the significant growth of the game, the story, and world that any MMO needs. Over a long period of time, the game suffers immensely and has little to show for it compared to traditional content updates, which causes a major loss of interest to both veteran and lapsed players.
4. The content so far at least has had a very ‘flavor of the month’ vibe which results in the LS feeling fragmented and incohesive and therefore lacking much depth. This is very much a shame because the world of Tyria is very interesting and has the potential to feel very deep and immersive.
5. Rushed, time-gated content release after release is just incredibly annoying. Completionists get frustrated and abandon the game, casuals don’t really get to experience it, and hardcore players don’t find it interesting enough to bother with. In short, it’s an epic fail for everyone that isn’t just in love with it for some arbitrary reason.
6. The business model encourages recurrent play rather than persistent play. When a player who has lapsed logs in to check the game out from time to time, they don’t see that much has changed so therefore their interest isn’t rekindled and they immediately stop again. The hemorrhaging of players is a self-perpetuating snowball.
I care about this game immensely but they have been on the wrong track since launch. I sure hope it can be shaped up and am cautiously optimistic year two will be better.
New patch, new content, forget past content. That seems to be the logic around here most of the time; pile up content over content without cohesion or living world/story as it is intended to be.
Pavilion is stuck in time… what happened to the big secret Queen Jennah was going to give? To Rox and Braham?
Even more so, what happned to the people that were suppossed to get their homes/jobs back after the Shining Blade finished repairs in the ditrict? What about Riot Alice? Didn’t even matter. Was never mentioned. No dialogues outside cutscenes and the forced comedy pair of the minstrel and the drone. No mention of the noises that were being heard down there.

What happened to Mai Trin? Why is she stuck in that cell for months (in-game time too) without even a different dialogue considering Aetherblades have been a big part of this “living” story and all that has happened?
http://i.imgur.com/wqTXb1f.jpg
What happened to Kiel? She won the election and now she’s standing on the same spot for over a month, they didn’t even bother to move her out of the fountain, just built on top of her with the same dialogue.

What about Braham and Ottilia? She was going to leave with a merchant and go on her merry way MONTHS ago. But she’s still sitting there. Braham still crying about it with her three feet away, with no mention of whatever happened in the pavilion. Didn’t even bother to check Rox after this. Cragstead is the same as before, stuck in time.
Honor Guards are still waiting for emmisaries, for what? It’s over.
We just got “invaded” across 13 different maps (more like invaded random patches of wilderness standing to be killed).
Heralds got nothing to say.
Marjory? Kasmeer? Canach? Mr. E? Zephyrites? The dark magic/hidden stuff in the sanctum?
What happened to The Pact? The Vigil? The Order? The Durmand Priory? Everyone related to the “personal story”? Destiny’s Edge? What’re they so busy about always sending us to do stuff? After over a year they’ve not considered at all facing Elder Dragons or champions? Just sit there saying they’re busy without commenting what’s going on?
Living World is slowly burning Tyria to the ground.

So I saw the post with descriptions of all the new items including RNG chests
Can we please not have these? I would rather not see the items in the game at all than have them through wallet grabbing luck chests. Seriously. We have had enough RNG for a while. Make it stop. Even if you go through with it, make sure everything is tradeable. That’s the least you can do to the people spending gems on it.
No one likes your lucky chests. We like fixed prices or obtainability through play.
The exact description:
Get packed for the return to Southsun Cove. An assortment of souvenirs from the Southsun islands. This chest contains Southsun crafting materials and a chance to get a wide variety of items such as shoulder skins, new boosts and conveniences, and a rare chance to get new weapon skins and mini pets.
No one wants chances or rare chances in something we buy with our real life cash. If you must, make the items expensive, but let us buy the items. You know you will have people complaining after “OMG having openened 100 chests, no mini!!1!” anyway.
allow us to mystic forge fractal weapons
4 weapons = fractal weapon claim token for your choice of weapon
problem is solved
hell I would even be happy with 4 weapons = random fractal weapons
I have around 35 fractal weapons and only about 1/3 I can use
I think there is a Moa Race in the works…
The race track is there in LA to see it…
Wanted to throw this out there again, I know I’ve seen it a few times before. From my understanding, arenanet has always had the image in mind that once a player hits 80, it’d be up to them to set their toons apart by making them unique and allowing them to mix and match gear and gear skins. However, I do believe much more of these need to be added.
In my opinion, I think players would rather see a patch containing lets say 200 new types of gear skins or 100 new town clothes. Or add weapon auras and colors similar to what path of exile does with their cosmetics. Most gear that you see running around in the game are pretty well known, like the cof rewards helmet, or the light nightmare pieces. But I think it’d just be pretty cool if new gear/skins were added and you go out and happen to kill a Moa, and boom! New rare helmet skin. Just add them to world drops, or chest drops.
I have 2 level 80 toons, and I have them both pretty much geared out to how I want them (restricted by gold of course) but I feel like there needs to just be more cosmetics added to this game. And it doesn’t even have to be all lvl 80 gear. I get excited for every patch, but it seems to only to result in other additions such as bland living story stuff, more backpack items, and t shirts??. I dunno, just my two cents :P so please arenanet, new gear and gear skins!
They could start buy letting us give them money for the skins we want, because they are not getting another dime from me as long as the skins remain under RNG.
RIP my fair Engi and Ranger, you will be missed.
Please let us wear these items and future ones in combat. I will never buy town clothes only.

Having forums here seems to do nothing but give people a means to complain – constantly – about everything.
Oh the irony..

I’m scratching my head after reading your post
- dodging isn’t used for dodging it’s used for prolonged kiting including MELEE classes: kitten!?
I don’t quite understand what you mean. I use dodge because it gives me a brief moment of invulnerability. With practiced timing (learning animation + account for my latency) I can avoid the most dangerous attacks from bosses. See the subject alpha fights in strife’s guides in P2 P3 for what I mean.
- attack sequences have no sense of timing in their animation so it’s difficult to feel the beat of an incoming attack which leads everyone to resort to kiting
Actually, most of those deadly attacks have some sort of wind up animation. There are a few bosses that randomly throw out heavy damage like the mossman axe’s and volcanic shaman arrows but those are in the minority.
- attacks come in high frequency with such a high rate of damage that being in melee is something you cannot do for more than a few seconds
which ones? most mobs and bosses actually have pretty low attack rates, I read in some other thread earlier of people complaining how confusions stacks barely get any ticks in pve
- going to ground means nothing, when fighting normal mobs you’ll kill it and get back up, against champions you’ll always die ergo this mechanic adds no depth to these encounters
Indeed. It gives a lot more room for errors when fighting normal mobs. When soloing champions or something unless they are really low when you go down you might as well afk until you’re dead or hope some guy walks by and help you back up. In groups it does allow any other player to quickly get you back up.
- there’s no distribution of responsibility to the individual when going to ground as the party MUST take care of you when you’re down, which makes you feel useless when this happens in a boss fight
well, isn’t it just as bad in other mmo’s? except in those games only a healer class have a rez skill.
First off congrats on fixing the major issue, a huge step ahead for wvw. But unfortunately the end of culling brought another issue with it, long player tag information+titles making large battles like 50vs50 kinda disappointed from what we had expected, you barely can see enemies behind the front line, their animations, their actions, you can’t even count them as well, they’re obscure by a massive unnecessary text information from above their heads.
It’s like before we couldn’t see much and now we’re seeing too much, it needs to be adjusted. Well the good news is that there is a perfect way to fix that and doesn’t seems to be that hard, at least I believe it’s not, clearly the best way would be:
- Server Name Abbreviation (Shorten)
examples:
Ferguson’s Crossing Assaulter = FC Assaulter
Crystal Desert Recruit = CD Recruit…
- Player Title Below NameTag Removal (for wvw only)
show/hide option if possible
why both? Some might think it would solve the problem removing titles only, but it only would help a little bit actually. The real problem is the full server name especially for the longest ones.
Sorry I know there’s a couple threads like this but no Dev responses makes it even more desperately for one. We know the Dev team is aware of this and hopefully already working to do something but a word on forums about this wouldn’t hurt and would be more then appreciated. Habib? Devon? Matt? Anyone pls?
“How exactly am I punished? Economically. Everyone who completes the dailies gets some silvers + mystic coin + a Jar of karma accompanied by some experience.”
^You are not punished. You are just not rewarded. Huge difference. Why are you not rewarded? Because you didn’t do the event, and they did. Do you expect to gain when you dont even bother to log in now?
I dont do fractals so im punished by not getting free ascended gear? Hells NO
You are not going to get paid if you dont go to work.
That would be fair to us GW1 players who grinded our Hall of Monuments to unlock everything… I don’t know why people feel that they are entitled to something simply because they like it.
Gandara
I understand that some of you are disappointed that you cannot guest on worlds in another region, but considering the complexity of internet routing, our main priority is to ensure that players have as much of an uninterrupted game experience as possible, which is the reason why we have two datacenters.
I’m sorry, but you did promise something before the game went live, before people chose their worlds.
Here at ArenaNet, we’ve always held that you should be able to play with your friends, whether they’re next door or a continent away. Today we’d like to outline a number of policies and technologies we’re implementing to support this belief.

This was posted in a blog by Regina on August 16th. I chose my world with this in mind. I picked a world where most of my European friends where, because I could play with my American friends once guesting was live. Now, you say you told a lie back then. Or at least promised something without checking if it was actually possible.
