Link?

Honestly, it seems you are incapable of accepting that some people enjoy gear progression. That was all I wanted to say.

So you decided not to read trough the discussion I provided and would like a different link?
Also where did I say that all people don’t enjoy gear progression? I merely stated that people that do enjoy it have thousands of MMOs to choose from, however those that don’t have a very few that they can find.

  1. I was responding to Vayne, thank you for assuming that since I didn’t quote you directly, that I hadn’t read it.
  1. In your link, there is only people quoting numbers without any actual numbers themselves. Where is the link Vayne mentioned? With actual numbers? The last post saying that number is probably higher since that thread is apparently fact and not opinion.

Thousands of MMOs? Really? That many actually exist?

I’ve made my point, I stand by it, I’m done here.

It’s nice that you think that people who like it have gotten enough, clearly they don’t think so or they wouldn’t be asking for more. How is it obvious that enough people who don’t like it are floating around? What have they done to “deserve” a game of their own?

How about they bought multiple MMOs just to fall behind over and over again so much that they ended up cut out of the content. Only 5% of WoW players have seen the end game.

Other people have also bought other games. I have bought multiple games, do I not deserve a “game of my own”? Do you have official numbers to back up this 5%?

I’ve seen the end game in plenty of games, its not that hard to get into if you really want to.

And this still does not negate my point that some people do indeed enjoy gear progression.

Depends on the food. I’ll wait 3 hours for something cooked by Gordon Ramsay.

This said, if Gordon Ramsay made customers wait 3 hours for food, I think he would fire himself from his own restaurant, insulting himself all the way to the exit… ;-)

And that is something I would love to see, lol.

On another note, ascended gear is already here, just the amount of it is in question.

I have no idea about how many people left over it because I DO NOT CARE.

My point, that you again completely avoided, is that some people DO enjoy gear progression.

I’m not going to change anything, if Anet decides to change the direction of the game, like they already have, then that is up to them and nothing you or I say will change that fact. They can talk about a game they want to make all they like. Every company does the same thing. The actual product is always going to be a compromise.

There is gear grinding in the game, you have said it yourself in the ascended gear. Grinding out tokens for dungeon gear is a grind, you’re doing the same activity over and over. Clearly the direction has been changed, or it was that direction in the first place. That gear is riding the line of what SOME people will accept. You don’t speak for the core player base, only yourself.

Will adding more make some people unhappy, probably, I am sure at least one person will be. Will more be made happy, possibly, but I don’t have any numbers, I just know of at least one person that will be happy.

So GW2 does have gear grind? Your gear has progressed from what it was at level one, therefore you’ve had to grind.

My point still remains, from the beginning, that what Xenon was attempting to describe as odious, I am trying to point out that some people actually enjoy. People do volunteer for that kind of thing.

So what if someone enjoys picking apples?

Ending is stagnation and death.

Clearly this is an quantity issue with you. So you use the starting gear, right? Or perhaps you run your character around naked, since gear could be more powerful than you.

Where did I mention grinding?

You don’t remember Gandalf the Grey becoming Gandalf the White? You don’t remember him picking up Glamdring after fighting the trolls? Bilbo getting Sting, then the One Ring, his mithril coat. The Fellowship getting elven cloaks and other gear to help them in their quest after fighting through the Mines of Moria.

So, we’ve set a lower limit of at least one weapon upgrade, is two bad then? Why?

Gear progression IS progress, progress being defined by being in the word progression. And being an addition, moving on from where you were.

Levels are there to provide a way to progress your character. You don’t like it, fine, you’re welcome to your opinion. YOU seem to be forgetting that some people do like levels. And since levels are already in the game, gear progression is in as well, and therefor so is stat creep.

Why would someone design a game to NOT be played? Guess what, Anet wants their game to be played too. And guess what else is in GW2, gear progression. Level 1 gear is vastly different from level 80 gear.

If Anet sold this game on just skill and story progression and no gear progression, then they owe people some money. You get gear through doing story and events. Skills are gained through levels and events, but all those things are there.

Lastly, I’d have no problem in your restaurant situation because I like meat. You don’t know me or my reasons, please don’t act like you do. If everyone in a restaurant wanted meat to be served, it would be a good idea for the owners to serve meat.

Again, ignore my point and just make up your own, please, its lots of fun.

If you don’t like leveling, why are you playing a game with levels? What form of progression is there where your character doesn’t change? Should we all have the same class and skills? Should all skills be the same?

To me, it sounds like you want stagnation. Start the game with everything, never get a different weapon. All things do 0-1 point of damage. Perhaps there shouldn’t even be hills? Just one flat level playing field.

If one skill happens to be better than another then you’ll have that dreaded vertical progression, right?

And you seem to keep changing the point. Originally Xenon made the point that he liked playing for fun and indicated that people who played for gear didn’t do so because it was fun, I responded to that saying people do indeed like to gear for fun.

Now it seems to be that any form of gear progression automatically means giant raids that will keep you from content.

My point was, people enjoy getting better gear for their characters, and unless you are still in your starting gear, you do too.

No where did I say anything about raids. No where did I say anything about gating content. All I did was suggest that some people (( IE every single person who ever changes anything about their character )) might not be completely happy with the starting gear.

Horizontal progression is great, I love it. Vertical progression is great too, it was great for 80 levels, why is level 81 anathema?

We can go back and forth over “some people do, some people don’t” Anet is going to go with what makes them the most money.

If you enjoy the game as it is, and they add something to it, what have you lost? You can continue enjoying it exactly the same as you have before, but now other people can enjoy it in other ways and more people are happy and more money is made.

It’s nice that you think that people who like it have gotten enough, clearly they don’t think so or they wouldn’t be asking for more. How is it obvious that enough people who don’t like it are floating around? What have they done to “deserve” a game of their own?

Unless you are sitting at level 80 with your starting gear stats, then you have already jumped on the gear bandwagon.

Well I normally play a game for the fun of it. I think it’s actually abnormal to play a game for any other reason. Although somewhere along the line “fun” and “gear progression” became the same thing to most MMO players. For traditional MMO players, GW2 is a disappointment in this regard. I feel bad for those people. I feel worse for GW2. I wish more of my friends were in to it as much as me.

This may come as a shock, but some people actually enjoy getting better gear for their characters. I mean, you don’t go through the whole game in starter gear, so why is it that at max level you don’t want better stuff?

No gear grind is an admirable goal. but what did Anet replace it with? Simply eliminating things is not visionary or progressive, you have to come up with something new. If you want to reinvent the wheel, getting rid of it is only the first step.

An Expansion's Worth of Content (no not that)

The problem I am having with the ‘living story" is that the world doesn’t change at all, just something is scotch taped in monthly, then removed without effecting the basic game at all. Yeah, you see a few new weapons, a hat, but what has really changed?

In order for the whole ’expansion’s worth of content’ thing to work is if someone is there for every bit of it. Yes, its free, so no one is losing something they paid for, but it seems a shame to put all that work in and then remove it.

Then there is the question of timing. With the temp stuff, you have to log in on a timely basis to get all of it. With a full expansion, its there, its going to be there when you are ready for it.

Yeah, its nice not to have to wait months or years for new things to do, but there is always going to be a trade off. You can get a ton of stuff at once, or a little bit here and there.

Correct, we have no idea how hard, or how easy it might be to re-implement the event, so we can’t really discuss that. All I can say is it was put into the game once, so clearly it can be done again if Anet wishes to

If they do it for one event then they set a precedent that they will have to for all others that a handful of players happen to miss.

Second post of the thread, sounds pretty much like at least one person saying it shouldn’t be done again. And I have seen plenty of comments like this for GW2 events and events from other games. Maybe that’s why it bugs me so much, it doesn’t hurt anyone for others to get a chance at enjoying events and the rewards from them.

I get most people want the event redone so they can get the hat, is that so wrong? Could it be more difficult than most would expect, yes. It could also be as easy akittenting a couple buttons, we just don’t know.

I really don’t expect it to be re-run, but if someone doesn’t speak up, then how is Anet to know that people are upset?

I get the whole ’piece of history thing" but in a video game, there is no history. You can go to Queensdale and kill the same troll 50 million times and it will still show up 50 million and 1. The whole game is pretty static, except for bits here and there.

And honestly, I have no issue with seasonal events, it does quite a lot to give you more of a connection to the world. However, I still see no reason for this thing to have been so short. Perhaps if the thing had run without a hitch and communication had been better they could have kept the time frame the way it was, but I just don’t get why it had to be so short.

With events like this, I’d much rather see them repeated for a while and more dev time spent on developing permanent content rather than each month spitting out bugged and temporary things.

I suppose it comes down to the fact that if I enjoy something, I have no problem enjoying it again and again. If there is a book I like, I read it over and over, movies, same thing. Video games are the same in my opinion, there isn’t anything stopping events from happening over and over. The vast majority of things in the game repeat, so why did this have to be 3 days only?

Anglvamp.5632

My point is, its not about buggy content or not. Even if it had worked perfectly, people still would have missed out on content because of an arbitrarily short time frame. Was there a logistical reason they couldn’t shoot off fireworks for 4 days, 5, a week, the whole month of the event?

I’m telling you, straight up, that I wanted a chance to watch some fireworks in game with my friends. The exact same reason to see them in the real world. You don’t get a reward, you get to spend some time with friends and make memories. I couldn’t care less about the helmet, I never wear them. It did however ruin my fun because I didn’t get a chance to enjoy it.

So much else in the game is centered around making sure everyone can get items. Gear is easy to get BiS, most of the content is fairly easy if you know what you are doing. So the only thing keep people from seeing the fireworks, and yes, getting armor skins and achievements is an short time frame.

If your (and I am referring to the general your, not anyone in particular) enjoyment of an in game item is focused on the fact that someone else doesn’t have it, I don’t know what to say. If the only reason to not extend an event or repeat it is so that some people can feel superior to others, I really don’t know what to say.

Its been put in the game once, it can be done again. I didn’t say anything about ease or difficulty. All I’m wondering is why people are so strongly against the event running for longer, or having it run again so others can enjoy it. I didn’t do the event, didn’t even know there was going to be fireworks with a prize and honestly, I don’t care. I just find it a bit disconcerting that people on these boards and in other games are so against people who may have missed events getting a chance to enjoy them.

The devs spent time making the content, no one loses anything if it is recycled, people can only gain enjoyment. Why would it be unfair to people who already saw it? They saw it, got their reward, what do they lose from someone else seeing the same thing and getting the same reward?.

The only thing that can’t be replicated in an MMO is its original launch. Events can always be re-run, its just coding, it doesn’t go bad or run out.

Would it really be so awful if other people got a chance to enjoy the same things in a GAME that others have?

Clearly they didn’t buy enough fireworks to shoot off during the festival, that’s why it had to be for such a short time only.

There is no excuse for this not to be redone. Thousands of people have done it, so you’re not going to be a special snowflake by trying to keep others from getting it.

If you really believe in the future and support the development in technology you wouldn’t say PCs have a brighter future than consoles. Atleast when it comes to Sony and Playstation, the japanese are just to good at this stuff, while Microsoft just keep doing their greedy bussiness and thinking.

Consoles ARE the future, they will get even more effective and smarter than they are and PCs will always be the same as they are. Time stand still for PCs.

Um…you do realize that consoles are just limited function computers right?

Person 1 buys a console, person 2 buys a PC. In 6 months, person 1 has the exact same thing, person 2 has the option of upgrading what they have. In a year, same thing. Two years, same thing, and so on.

Which device is stagnating?

But of course. The players know more about MF through anecdotal evidence than the devs who have access to the actual coding. Yeah that makes a lot of sense.

Guess what? I was receiving blues and greens as loot. I started stripping my character before collecting loot and I started getting rares and even an exotic. Clearly stripping my character was the reason and not RNG.

I hear if you align your computer with the north star that you’ll get at least a rare in every chest.

The No subscription fee is the biggest selling point of GW2 and the main reason of it’s success so far.
If there was a subscription fee, i don’t think the game would’ve been through the first 3 months (with launch problems and the whole Lost Shores + Ascendant crap fiasco) so easily.

And what does that tell you about the quality of the game, if its main selling point is that it is free? All the original P2P games are still around, still charging after over a decade.

I’ve to no beef with different models of play, but in my experience the ones with a sub fee are much better.

One day there will be an MMO where customization and choices of cosmetic weapons & armor will be vast enough that you will be hard pressed to tell that you’re wearing the same armor or using the same weapon as the person beside you.
Being able to change the hilt of a sword/axe/greatsword/dagger or rifle/pistol stock. Being able to stain the parts of the weapon different colors. Earn a particle effect for the weapon and tint the color to your liking. Etc.

There already was an MMO like this, City of Heroes, and it was terrific. None of the costuming items were exclusive and I /never/ ran into someone with a look even close to what I had.

It’s always seemed to me that the more exclusive an item was supposed to be, the more often you’d see it.
