Why do you not play sPvP?

GW2 is a great game, but small team pvp isn’kittens strong point. Small fights are more about class balance than player skill here. Compare to say Eve online, where (for all its many other faults) small team pvp is 99% player skill.

The main thing ranks tell you is how many hours someone has spent in karma trains. I’d imagine at this point 90%+ of the total wxp given to people has come from those. You can earn more in an hour of a good train than you can playing normally for a week, which makes ranks meaningless.

Build around all the traits which give you bonuses when downed. It’s pretty safe to say those won’t ever be nerfed.. as you’ll be the only person who ever uses them.

too many variables. Do you mean melee or ranged? burst or sustained? single target or multiple target? level 1 or level 80?

Use Server Population To Solve Balance Issues

There’s a much simpler fix: Just divide all rewards between the number of people who hit the target/captured the objective.

Suddenly you’ll see many small havoc groups rather than the current zerg karma trains, and people will actually want to move to low pop servers for the increased reward opportunities.

So many Mesmers and Guardians

I’ve been wondering about this also for some time. For all the hype about warriors and thieves on the forums in practice the current meta seems to be guardians (for zergs) and mesmers for roaming. Warriors and thieves are both way less common on my server.

This post is great, except 4 out of 5 roaming stealth users are now PU mesmers, and not thieves.

Frustrations and thoughts of a new player

The thing with wvw is that most casual players are more interested in tangible rewards (ranks and loot) than they are with the weeks wvw score. They know they can’t effect the later much, so holding objectives is counter productive – it’s better to lose them and then earn more loot/wxp taking them back afterwards. It’s a similar deal with zergs, the scoring system encourages them.

At the extreme, a friday karma train on a populated server can earn 10-20 ranks over a few hours by cycling captures with a cooperative enemy realm. It would take weeks to earn that playing defensively.

Any tips on commanding fights?

1. Communicate with your team. If you have a tail stretching half way across the map it’s a reliable indicator that you aren’t communicating enough. Calling for a stack as soon as you see the enemy zerg isn’t a valid solution to this problem.

2. If you play a warrior or guardian don’t say “stay with me” and then double evade through the enemy zerg leaving all your medium and light followers to melt behind you. You may have 30k hp, a signet of godlike healing, 3k toughness and 19 stun breakers, but that ele who you’re yelling at to supply a waterfield does not. He died 3 minutes ago.

3. If you die don’t immediately return to the WP and call for a regroup. The people still fighting then have the dilemma of whether to break off or not, usually condemning those who don’t.

4. If you get comments such as “30 minute queue and only 5 people following the tag?” it’s a reliable indicator that you need a lot more practice before commanding again.

Champion bags are ruining open world PvE

The champion train isn’t just about rewards. Many people use it to level, especially for alts. Before wow came along mmo’s involved grinding to level, and some people prefer that style of leveling.

If you read any of the class forums here you’ll come away with the impression that the class is underpowered. ‘Everyone’ thinks their class sucks and only their superior player skill allows them to remain competitive with it…

Zones repopulation

I like how these threads are always here yet in every zone I play in there are always tons of players, save for like Brisban Wildlands. Literally. I don’t understand where these threads come from. I’ve never seen a game with such active zones >.>

The servers must vary then. On mine i’m lucky to see one person per day in low level zones (except the queensdale champ train). Not only does it make the game feel very dead, but it also makes a lot of content worthless. For example gathering activities take forever if you’re the only person doing them, champion mobs are near impossible, dungeons are just silly solo etc. The only realistic way to level while retaining your sanity is via the queensdale champ train, which is exactly what everyone appears to do for 80 levels.

best way to lvl

Best option seems to be the queensdale champion train. Basically a zerg killing the 5-6 champion mobs in the zone which runs pretty much 24/7 on the busier servers. If you don’t like pve quests or map completion it’s the nearest thing this game has to the old school mmo group grinding to level. Do that till L60 or so, then at that point you can get decent xp from wvw.

As to the people asking why he wants to level fast, I’d imagine it’s because he’s trying gw2 for the wvw. I’m in the same boat, and have pretty much no interest in pve questing/map completion etc. You can technically try wvw at L1 but without traits and using kitten low level armor and weapons you aren’t effective enough to make it worthwhile.

Most direct damage class after patch (Pve)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Axz.8430

If this is just for pve then be careful what you wish for. Most classes can do good burst damage if played well and hard enough. A well played engineer or mesmer can have some fairly obscene burst damage, but that doesn’t mean you’d want to ever use one for pve farming. If you want sustainable high dps without needing to press 50 keys a minute then warrior is easily the best choice imo.

Missing social interaction in GW2

Axz.8430

I’m not sure if all servers are the same, but on mine all the starter areas are largely empty except for the human one (Queensdale). If you go to that one you can usually find people doing the champion train. It’s a pretty tedious way to level but if you want some interaction that’s the most reliable way to find it at low levels.

Rezzing etiquette question

That’s an interesting point, as I killed 4-5 mobs standing right next to the body and the person presumably could have rallied off of any of those if they wanted to.

Ahhh, okay. I thought it always took a long time to rez someone. I didn’t realize it only took a few seconds if you did it early enough. That makes sense of it – thank you!

Axz.8430

I’m fairly new to the game and was running around exploring when I found a dead person next to a group of mobs. I killed the mobs and started to rez the person, when they said “lol why wait until i’m dead to rez?!”

Is that comment as nonsensical as it first appears, or is there some rezzing etiquette in this game to be aware of? Does anyone know what it means?

I was too busy trying to stay alive (lots of enemies all around) to be able to answer and the person immediately ran off so I didn’t get the chance after. If it’s relevant the person was shown as a blue shield on the map (actually I thought it was a quest marker, and wasn’t expecting it to be a player, but that’s a separate issue lol)

Discussion: Leveling alts - boring?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Axz.8430

Axz.8430

It’s faster to level in GW2 than in other MMO’s I’ve played, but the key difference is that it’s harder to do so on autopilot, which makes it more tedious.

In games such as DAOC you could farm the same mobs for hours at a time but it was bearable because you were always grouped, could largely fight on autopilot (mentally) and there was always conversation to pass the time. In GW2 by comparison you have to pay far more attention (such as to the quest objectives or crafting system) while there generally is no conversation to distract yourself with.

Net effect is that gw2 has a less tedious leveling system for your first character (or two), but a more tedious one for subsequent alts.

Rerolling

Can anyone explain WHY rangers are weaker than warriors? I keep reading it in these forums but never any explanation. I’m leveling one of each side by side, waiting to choose a main and (at L30 with limited wvw experience) the ranger seems way more survivable than the warrior. Similarly the only classes I ever really see in pve are rangers and guardians. Usually in mmo’s everyone gravitates to the strong classes, so again it would appear to suggest rangers are doing okay. Do they get worse at higher levels, or?…

I recently started and had the same question. I just finished comparing all 8 classes so here’s my opinion:

If you’re a casual player I’d say avoid engineer, elementalist, mesmer and necromancer. They all need a lot of investment to become competent. In the case of ele and engineer they also need a lot more manual dexterity, unless you play with a controller anyhow. Mesmer and necro are simpler to play but have some hidden drawbacks which aren’t immediately apparent (lack of speed for the mesmer, and poor synergy with other necros for the necro) unless you have a dedicated group they’re kind of a pain.

Thief, warrior, guardian and ranger are all much simpler to play well. Guardian and ranger are by far the easiest/strongest – you’ll rarely die with either. Warrior and thief are more delicate and need some finesse to play well (limited healing and mitigation options and need to be in melee to deal decent damage).

Overall i found the classes to be pretty well balanced for an mmo. It’s mainly a case of how many buttons you want to press in any given fight and what exactly you plan to spend your time doing. In my opinion Ele is the strongest overall class, but you really have to work hard to play it well. If you get lazy its performance drops off very fast.

I’ve found that using “skip to end” as soon as the end cutscene starts avoids the disconnect. It’s a really annoying bug though, you start to feel like you’re in that groundhog day movie.
