First, I offer apologies for this belated report. Life has a habit of taking top priority. Strange how that happens.
Second – to the report…
There were some bugged events. Bug Reports were submitted. However, to clarify on those reports – All three of those events were working very well on Friday with large groups of very willing participants. By Saturday, while the server was overwhelmed by enough people to shutdown Minis (that’s how I knew there were a lot of people), the events themselves did not have the same draw to complete them. So, some of the events could have been taking far too long to complete because people simply didn’t want to take the time, or group sizes weren’t large enough to complete the events.
Characters used –
Since I wasn’t able to participate in the Rev beta testing, I whipped one up and ran around with him for the majority of the time. Tried out all four elites, I like Shiro best. I am disappointed Glint is not one of the elites. I was looking forward to having access to her skills. That would have gone a long way for character background since I’ll be revamping one of my GW characters for the Rev. (yes, my Rit) However, Shiro is a fine second choice. With Elites use, the characters were able to hold their own much better while travelling individually. This brings me to the Third Point.
(Also mocked up my Mes as a beta for the Chronomancer. Still have to get the swing of those skills. They don’t seem very effective. I could have been using them incorrectly.)
Third –
This expansion feels far too balanced toward guild groups and Large group exploration. There are going to be (as evidenced by the large number of players on Saturday but very few grouping up) LOTS of individual players running the Maguumas and not being able to really advance. It is quite discouraging to have to battle for each step through an area and the reward is maybe a small square being cleared. Not all players spend most of their waking hours calculating max stats for max achievement. And, contrary to popular belief, Grinding is Not fun.
Fourth, the Mastery Skills –
I was able to unlock Gliding. That was a far as I could go. Experience was difficulty won. When there weren’t groups heading into the jungle, I had to wait, sometimes for ten to twenty minutes, before enough people gathered together to safely explore. Gliding worked… hit-or-miss. Fell many times before the skill would finally decide to work. Keep in mind, the glide process is simple: jump, hit space bar, glide. However, I would jump, hit space bar, continue falling… Got to know the floor of the Maguumas on a first name basis… [chuckling here]
Okay, going to conclude here on a positive note. The textures and 3d renders are outstanding. Your Devs did an incredible job creating a beautiful environment that beckons players to explore every nook and crevice. It is a most worthy successor to the Maguumas of Guild Wars. I look forward to the expedition to the Bloodstone.
Thank you.
You guys realise that when events that ‘were’ working reach a point where they stop working, that’s exactly the sort of thing that beta testing is supposed to find out.
There are all sorts of things that can cause events to stop working when you have thousands of players interacting with them, such as triggers that fail under heavy load (start event, start event, start event, start event, start event), mobs that spawn in a location that allows them to be killed but not recorded for the event, causing it to register too few kills to complete (spawn, die oops). Not to mention finding novel ways to exploit an event that wasn’t anticipated and therefore causes it to break… and so on.
These sort of things require large numbers of players to find them. Sure ANet want feedback, but what they ‘really’ want is to identify places where the live community can break events that don’t break under internal testing.
- chuckling to self *
This brings to mind the Halloween event in GW when Daniel Frozenwind rallied a large number of players, each downing high amounts of absinth (nifty green fire effect) and zerged through LA, thus crashing the server. Game was down for quite some time while the devs rushed to figure out what happened. It was great.
So, yes, peoples… STRESS Those Servers! If there are bugs – Report Them! When we purchased the pre-order we signed on as part of the development team. WE are the BETA testers. If WE do not do our part, then how else is the greater community going to have a near perfect game to play? That’s what BETA Testing is all about.

A few weeks ago I had mentioned to my kids that the Rev wasn’t just a new twist of the Rit from GW1 but a combination of the Rit and WoW’s Death Knight. Which is okay by me as I had a DK in WoW. The next issue for me was – are they (ANet) going to have players go through full leveling or start the Rev at an advanced level.
As my Rev is going to be a continuation of my Rit, I answered that question for myself. With the Tomes of Knowledge I shall take him to lvl20, which is the cap in GW1, and then play level him from there. He has been called back from the Mists to aide in the battle with the Elder Dragons. Hokie… maybe. Effective for me… I can live with it simply fine, considering my charr is the descendant of my GW human ranger and my Mes has never died (has something to do with bloodlines and a particular lich). So, the Mes called back an old friend from the Mists to help out. His solution to the dwindled manpower.
I believe it is up to each player to decide how he or she will address the leveling issue for their Revenant. Guild Wars is a game that allows the players creative license, within the given parameters.
So, Get Creative Folks!
Kilam.4913,
Thank you very much. The added code line worked like a charm.
Verizon Fios in the city of brotherly love. And I’ll tell you, after five hours of attempting to update for play, I’m not feeling much love toward Verizon or ANet. Yesterday, the update went smoothly without a hitch. Today, after the bug fixes, the whole deal is schite.
So, thatnk you for the suggestions. They will certainly be tried. HOWEVER,
Gaile, as one of the originals from GW I implore you, for all of we few, we unhappy few, would you please speak with whoever needs to understand this dire predicament and is willing to cultivate a mutual solution between Verizon and Anet? Please. Verizon says it’s not their issue, as explained to me by one of their customer service reps, who only wanted to shuffle me off to Buffalo.
Thank you.
Our goal is to get to a point where on a regular basis, the world around you is not only changing in the short term through our normal event system, it’s changing and evolving permanently through our living world releases as well. What you’ve seen so far is primarily some tests and warmup stuff while we in the background organize the company to support this exciting future for our game, the future for living world is filled with endless possibilities.
Enjoy the ride!
Colin and the GW2 ANet team -
Being a long-term GW1&2 player, I have to say I am liking your ideas for the direction of this particular game. It’s one thing to sit and play a game with a very fine story line/graphics/mechanics that continually repeats. It is completely another for the game with a very fine story line/graphics/mechanics to shift and move it’s story as the story is occurring. The game then becomes a living, breathing (albeit virtual) entity. Much like real life. We live through what will become history. round of applause As games go, you have something unique here. It’s a concept I’d been hoping for since the third year of GW1.
I have one request in this – PLEASE, allow us, the players, the ability to completely (after a short period of time completely deleteing on your part) annihilate an elder dragon or two before dumping another major something-or-other on top of our heads?
For anybody who hasn’t seen it yet: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/releases/march-2013/
Yes, I just read this.
I am a person raised to use proper English in the home, as well as in public, however, there is only one thing I have to say concerning the direction of the Living Story plot -
ANet… WTF!?
I have been playing Guild Wars since its release in 2005. Never has there been such… OVERKILL… as ANet is dumping, yes, DUMPING, upon the heads of players.
Is it not enough that there are Dredge, Flame Legion, Nightmare Court, Sons of Svairn, and the Inquest, PLUS the Dragons’ champions and the Risen, the Karka fiasco, and various dungeons… you feel compelled to inflict MORE chaos on players? PLEASE, I beseech you, let us completely rid Tyria of SOMETHING before shackling players with bigger and badder foes.
There is more than killing which makes a good game. Unfortunately, Anet game designers seem to have forgotten that. You make me appreciate EA’s Sims series.
Thank you.

Guilds exist cross-server, meaning that if you move to a different server your guild will exist on the original and the new server together. However, all of the influence, upgrades, and banked items/gold that were earned on the original server will remain there while the new server will need to start from scratch. Think of it as the original server is your HQ and each additional server is a separate office.
Thank you for that clarification. This point I understand. Continuing with your terminology, what I am asking is… Is it possible to move the HQ and retain all accomplishments already gained (instead of having a HQ with a branch office that doesn’t benefit from HQ perks)?
(edited by BCPrhys.7230)
Please, I need a definitive answer before the 28th January.
Half of my guild has moved to an RP active server. This is great for them, but they’re making this a permanent move before the 28th. I would like to keep the guild intact, together on one server. Is it possible to move the guild itself over to that RP server?
Thank you.
In GW1, in the Norn territory of GW:EotN, there are actually three side quests your character can take. Starting with the Great Ale Moot, if your character is male he is on the verge of marrying Olrun Olafdottir, if female then Olaf Olafson. These pending marriages are terminated when your character (male or female) out performs the intended spouse in reputation. Who knew Norns egos are so fragile?
But then there is my personal favourite: at the second Cantha New Year Festival, my main character received this fortune – You will be involved in an unrequited love with a charr.
I had a blast with that one because my main was constantly running with Pyre. (same sex was out of the question for him). So… for his personal background story – he was made a member of Pyre’s warband, and Pyre’s one sister took him for mate. He survived the mating ritual (barely), and fathered the first human Charr. He died at the age of 90 years, among the Charr a hero and protector. His name was made an honourary title. So, a hundred some years after his death, there now roams a Charr proudly bearing his title name.
So, romance in the game? Can happen if you as the player make it so. However, you need other folk for the RP to happen and become game magick.
Twice only have I been able to successfully make a purchase.
When the cursor is scrolled over the object pic, there is no description given of the object. When I go to the purchase screen, I can enter an amount for purchase into the box, but the BUY button is never highlighted to press and complete the purchase. I recently attempted to sell two items, but nothing appeared on the screen to highlight for listing.
What’s up with this? Thank goodness me son has a properly functioning game. He’s been my BLT go-between. However, I would like to conduct my own transactions at the BLT.
Thank you for any consideration you give this issue.
I keep trying to purchase CandyCorn for the cooking recipes, but since the BLT doesn’t want to work properly for me, I’ve been unable to.
By the end of spring/beginning of summer, when the suplly of CC has dwindled but people are still making the cooking recipes, you’ll see price rise for this product. Itwill hold true for any recipe mat.
Personally, I commend ANet for keeping the chest as a drop, albiet EXTREMELY RARE. For those of us who participated, but were for one reason or another unable to complete the one-time event and thus lost out on the end chest, we will at least have a possibility of a consortium chest. I am now looking forward to being able to get back to that island and kick some Karka kitten
M’lady Gaile, what a pleasant surprise to see you respond to this humble request for assistance.
Yes, this issue is resolved, so if you’re wanting to lock the thread, by all means. Metadata provided accurate information. I was able to retrieve the name my daughter was holding for me, and the character is currently sitting at level8. Thank you very much for asking. My only other issues deal with the Black Lion Trading Post, and continually being disconnected when travelling through instance portals, but those issues will be posted in the appropriate threads.
Again, thank you for this assistance.
chuckling On a side note – how has The Frog been doing since the 250 year leap?
Quite cute. A pleasant bit of light entertainment well presented.
Thank you.
It would be fine to see a continuation of the Herald.
Please forgive the delayed responce.
Metadata – Your advise was correct. There is a 24 hour delay after deleteing a character, the same as with Guild Wars 1. I have informed my daughter of this, so now we are both educated for furture knowledge.
Thank you for your assistance.
First, thank you ANet designers for the Guild Wars series. As a player since six months after GW1 was released, I have enjoyed the play and the new friendships made throught the game.
Second, and the reason for this post…
my daughter held a character name for me on her beta account. I finally received a copy of GW2 as a birthday gift, so she released her hold of the name. However, every time I try to create the character on my account, I receive the message that the name is currently in use by another player. But hold on, it gets better – when I do a name search in-game, I receive the message that the naem is NOT being used by another player, and if I wish I can make a character with said name.
Please, what is going on here? Do I need to wait some amount of time for the name to be fully released? Hopefully, someone has not snatched up the name as soon as my daughter released it for me.
Thank you for looking into this.
