Pesky mordrem got you down? Then join The Arbor Masters [TREE] and crush your enemies with the power of a mighty wooden trunk. Our 300+ strong forest is looking to recruit you!
About our grove: We are a large guild with a strong trunk of active players. We use teamspeak and encourage everyone to join in, since this is where our most experienced players spend their time. Several of our officers run meta events including both the new HoT events as well as old Tyria content. There is usually a group that runs Teq at reset for example. We also run dungeons and fractals relatively frequently.
Who we are looking for: All prospective trees should be active on a regular basis. We want players looking to grow with a good guild. We also want experienced players looking to do harder content, especially raids. Having TS or being willing to download it is a huge bonus.
Raids: We are also trying to recruit raiders, as this is one of our current focuses. If you aren’t experienced, we run training runs to teach people the mechanics. If you are more experienced then we especially want you. We run regular groups on Tuesdays and Thursdays and other days on demand.

Bringing a ranger in a dps role will hinder killing Gorseval, do nothing for Sabetha, and possibly hinder killing Vale. The absolute best damage ranger can do is the bare minimum needed to kill the boss. Anything less is actively hurting your team.
It is an opinion because you are stating that bringing a Ranger in a dps role will hinder a raid. That is an biased opinion in which case you have zero facts to back it up.
Zero facts, except for an actual damage meter. I think you don’t understand the meaning of the word zero.
It’s 10% each for five players. It works out to about 2-3% when you consider the internal cool down and up time on frost spirit plus the fact that it is a stationary buff giver with a range of a 1000.
Sir, you have no idea how Ranger works.
My Frost Spirit has close to 80% uptime in raids, it doesn’t have any internal cooldown, and the Zerk DPS increase it provides is 7,5% for 5 people (while every single buff is capped at 5 people). So please, go through your homework one more time because you left out 8 other classes. You should try comparing instead of exaggerating.
The numbers you gave are numbers of pure DPS that are still higher than most of classes’ buffs. For example, 8% crit from banner =/= 8% dps. Simply because condition damage, classes with in-built crit going over cap, and so on.
You are right. Frost Spirit is not an exception in this. Why should it?
Ok then, lets assume best case scenario. At 75% proc rate, 10% damage buff, 5 person limit, theoretical max up time of 60/80 second, and party dps of 73k (enough to kill Vale with 1-2 minutes left), that means that frost spirit is equivalent to 2k total added. That puts ranger up to a max of 7k dps, still far behind other classes. However ALL spirits have an internal cool down limiting their effect and on top of that this assumes absolutely perfect timing and placement so that everyone is inside the range of the spirit at all times. This is obviously ridiculous against bosses like Vale guardian, or even Gorseval to some extent. You are probably only getting 1k dps out of your frost spirit.
For similar reasons the other party buffs that ranger provides are basically at most as effective as frost spirit.
quick question, does this complaint about ranger’s dps includes the pet’s own damage and their abilities and taking into account ranged weapon vs.melee weapons and their associated side functionality? Catch my drift?
only if pet dps shows up in the chat window, which i haven’t tested, but i highly doubt. anet isn’t usually that efficient.
Pet damage is shown in the combat log and is included in the damage meter’s calculations.
Are there legal heal “meters”? Would be nice to know some of those numbers
This damage meter can be used to look at almost any kind of combat performance, including healing, damage taken, condi damage, and direct damage.
No API meters = this discussion is an opinion and should only be treated as such. Furthermore, no one wants meters. The boss either lives or dies based on team work. There is no carry this way. You do x damage you contribute. Plain and simple.
How is using the combat log to figure out how much damage you do an opinion? This damage meter is literally just a form of calculator. If you want to believe about imaginary numbers floating behind the scenes go ahead, but don’t ever do raids.
I was wondering if the OP was suggesting that bringing a Ranger in DPS role would hinder, reduce, or prevent a raid boss kill. I didn’t get that answer. Instead it is more about a third party meter showing that they are doing X damage compared to others.

Frankly the ranger buffs suck. The buff from frost spirit has less than 50% up time over the course of a boss fight where the boss and players have to be moving. On top of that it’s a tiny 10% increase shared over a max of 5 people, so you’re looking at only a 2-3% increase in party damage. Buffs like grace of the land, sun spirit, and spotter have similar issues. Basically all other classes bring higher damage than ranger with party buffs and most of them have better utility anyway.
First, when I said 5-10% I was talking about the ranger in specific. The first wing is doable with a ranger but I wouldn’t bring them if possible. It’s better to bring a class than can do actual damage. Take necro’s for example. Condi necro can do 10+k dps at range. The ranger’s spirits and spotter don’t make up for their terrible dps.
Condi ranger on gors might work ok, but in general you really shouldn’t be bringing this class to raids after the first boss.
The damage meter is the one that was posted about on Reddit. It isn’t perfect but it is within about 5-10% of the real value. The issue isn’t about people being able to clear the first boss, who is relatively easy. What I’m saying is that it gets harder. Don’t bring ranger if you want a decent time. They simply just don’t do enough damage to warrant bringing them.
Too bad there actually is a decent damage meter that has been checked manually by several people. If you go into a raid you need to be bringing your full support. Simply put you CAN’T do that on ranger.
Using a legal damage meter (doesn’t break terms of service) I looked at my ranger’s damage over a decent period of time (several minutes). Simply put I was capping out at just a little over 5k dps. This isn’t enough to bring it to raids by its own. With frost spirit, sun spirit, and spotter ranger is just barely acceptable, but base ranger damage is not enough to kill the first boss with in the enrage timer. Don’t bring ranger outside of druid, and don’t play ranger in raids. I’m saying this as long time ranger main. Condi ranger basically isn’t any better either.
Name: Vale Legion [VALE]
Purpose: Basically the idea is pretty simple. I’m creating a guild who’s purpose is to help people get raids organized. Real life gets in the way, and it can be hard for a lot of guilds and individuals to get together full and organized raids. This is a way to solve this problem. The goal is to get as many other guilds to join in as possible. This way if you are missing a member, or have a few too many people for one group, those people can still go raiding.
Member Requirements: Almost none. You don’t have to rep, since if you join this will probably be a secondary guild. However, members should be willing to put in the work to be competent raiders. This means that you are bringing exotic or better gear and decent knowledge of how your class works and what role you are filling. You don’t have to know the specific boss mechanics, but you should be ready to listen to more experienced players and follow their lead. This is also meant to be a welcoming and friendly environment, so don’t bring poor attitudes. Aggressive or harassing behavior won’t be tolerated. The one hard requirement is that you should have team speak or be ready to download it upon joining. You don’t need to have a microphone set up, but you should be able to listen in.
Who we are looking for: We are trying to recruit people who want to do raids, but aren’t in raiding guilds, as well as the raiders from other guilds. If you are already in a guild and doing raiding, joining can only benefit you and your guild.
Organization: We will be getting a guild hall in the near future as more people join, mostly so that we have a meeting place. Ranks will mostly be used to show experience level in the raid. If I know people are going to be raiding a particular day, I will try and let the whole guild know, so that people can join in if they want
Goal: We’re really new, but our goal is to get up to 50-100+ raiders. This will be the ideal minimum level, so that raid groups can get easily filled out.

We were able to get it down to about 50% after several hours. We had a guild/pug mixture all on team speak. Most of our time was actually spent looking for people to join though… Based off of our progress we could have probably gotten farther if we hadn’t spent so much time looking for extra people. Our set up was a little unconventional since our tank was a tempest. It seemed to work pretty well actually, since we got farther than our guild’s main group. Based off of this and the fact that I’ve heard of others using a pure support tempest instead of a druid, I would say that people were underestimating the new elite spec for ele.
This is a post trying to outline suggestions for bringing the ranger up to be balanced with other classes and the new elite specializations. Few, if any, other professions get as much hate as rangers, both in the meta and in more casual situations. Part of this is due to the natural issues with the play style of ranger’s in game, but a significant part is also due to deficiencies in the profession’s design. There are many complaints about specifics, such as the auto attack on the sword, issues with spirits, etc. However the first issue that needs to be addressed has to do with the actual character of the ranger. Most of the other professions in this game have no issue with this. No one ever questions what a mesmer is supposed to, or how does an elementalist work; while their play styles might be complicated and nuanced, the flavor of those professions is specific and unique. To ArenaNet’s credit, the same can be said of all of the elite specs, including druid, which is why the most often hear legitimate complaint is that the druid is more like a new class than an improvement of the ranger.
On the official website, this is what the blurb for the ranger is: “Rangers rely on a keen eye, a steady hand, and the power of nature itself. Unparalleled archers, rangers are capable of bringing down foes from a distance with their bows. With traps, nature spirits, and a stable of loyal pets at their command, rangers can adapt to any situation.” From playing the current ranger as it’s gone through changes, this blurb is out of line with the actual play style evident in the game. Consider a current popular build, sword-axe/greatsword. This build has nothing to do with traps, bows, or nature spirits. Rather it’s about fast switches between two relatively lackluster weapons in order to utilize the three decent abilities out of ten. The long bow builds have damage issues. Trap builds aren’t that relevant considering that even among condition builds they aren’t spectacular. Spirit builds, while more durable due to the recent 95% change, offer less utility than a druid’s glyphs, and the internal cool down makes lackluster, so they just aren’t used often.
The problem with the ranger isn’t just a matter of bugs with the sword, or crippling internal cool downs for spirits. Rather the class just doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do. Based off of the description, a ranger should be a class that punishes enemies by using builds that actively take advantage of inherent weaknesses. When playing a ranger I want to feel like someone who uses their superior speed to play those super obnoxious builds. The long bow should pose a significant threat in terms of shear damage. I want to be able to dance around enemies using my short bow and axes to kill them with conditions. The sword and great sword need to feel both powerful and at the same time not a ridiculous danger to my character’s survival.
I hope that moving forward this profession gets a serious reexamination of it’s purpose. This is the most generic of all of ArenaNet’s professions, but it doesn’t have to be. To make this class more fun, diverse, and nuanced is going to take more than cursory number changes. I love the ranger, but it is long past time for an update. We don’t need more damage control patches, we need Ranger2.0. No one should expect this to be easy or quick, but it should be coming.
