I agree with the OP. This game is all flash and no substance. The combat in my opinion is the worst part of the game. Your character just feels floaty, and there isn’t a sense of you connecting with the mob you are fighting. Also fighting a mob and it taking forever to kill him while he can two shot you is just in my opinion lame. I sure dont feel very heroic when a mosquito can kill me and I have a giant broadsword or powerful magic at my disposal. Also the downed combat thing……its just stupid. Either kill me or not. Having to go through this stupid button spamming mini game thing just to get healed and then one shotted again is just lame.
Running from one orange circle and heart to another just gets boring. Half the time you cant tell what is going on anyway because of all the effects going off. And that brings up the heart quests. How again are these just not exactly like any other mmo quests? They have just taken out the middle man. You still have to collect things. You still have to kill a certain amount of enemies…..its the same thing. Also I remember the videos before the game came out. They said things we do in world affect it forever. That is just a flat out lie. These events are going to happen if my character is there or not, and then they will happen again, and again, and again, and again.
Graphics are really nice, and I like the voice acting, but that is about all.
To those who like the game, I hope you have a great time playing. I guess the game is just not for me.
I agree with your post. All except one thing. The combat still needs work in my opinion. Im getting really tired of it taking forever to kill a mob that is at my level or a little lower, but they can one or two shot me over and over. This aspect of the game is starting to really make me not like it.
We are supposed to be these awesome heroes, but we get plowed over by the least little thing. I would think we should have a little more survivability than we do.
Respawn rate combined with the horrible targeting system is becoming a near game breaker for me. Not completely a game breaker yet, but getting there. It wouldnt be so bad if you didnt die from getting hit twice, but when you are attacking one mob, then one spawns right on top of you, and you switch targets only to target something not even in the field of view, and they attack also……yea not the best mechanic in an MMO.
I agree and applaud for ArenaNet thinking out of the same ol’ MMO box. Some things I dont like about the game, but hey Im still having fun. I REAAAALLY like that Im not pressured to just get on and level as fast as I can in order to compete with end game content. I am enjoying taking my time and just taking it all in.
Im just gonna take this subject and spin it a bit.
So every class has potential to be control, damage, or support. Who is actually going to spec for control or support when the damage build pretty much has the same healing function. There is no taunt, so why would you spec for a tank type spec?
Im still new to this game, so im just wondering and trying to understand it all. Im sure Im not the only one with these questions.
Please don’t add a dungeon finder, searching a group works perfectly fine.
Hmmm….I seem to recall a recent MMO release where people were saying this. It was pretty much one of the downfalls of the game.
Here is my take on the LFD issue. I say put one it. Its a great tool for people that dont have time to find groups, or dont have a lot of friends or a guild to play with.
If you would rather not have LFD, then simply dont use it. Other people like myself like that feature of other games.
This game and that ‘game’ are different. Nobody cares what happened to that other game. And unless you have hardcore proof that a lack of a LFD tool was a part of the downfall of said game, then your words are simply an assumption.
People are so lazy these days.
Its not about being lazy. I just have limited time to play because of work and other things. I dont want to spend my game time sitting around an instance spamming LFG, if dont have to.
I would rather queue up, and quest until my turn pops. Simple as that.
And yes that WAS one of the main reasons that other MMO from a galaxy far far away failed so hard. If you had been in the game and on the forums there were tons of posts and complaints about not being able to find groups for flashpoints and heroic quests. People got sick of spamming LFG and started quitting. I was one of them. It was not the only reason, but it was one of the main ones.

Having expressed my negatives about the game, I feel its only fair to list what I do like about GW2.
Obviously the price is nice. A game of this calibur without a monthly fee is really nice.
The graphics are insanely good for an MMO. There have been more than one time where I just stop and go WOAH that is cool.
Voice acting – Top notch. I play an Asura, and I love the voice acting and the attitude of those guys.
Stability – I have very little lag, which is always a good thing.
Combat – I do like the combat. There are some aspects of it that I don’t prefer, but on the whole, it is nice to have something different than “stand here, shoot shoot shoot…mob dies” I play a Mesmer, and I really like the mechanics of the class.
Is Guild Wars 2 the game that will finally break my WoW addiction. Ill put it this way. I logged into wow for the first time last night in about 2 weeks. I queued up for an instance on one of my alts, and got about half way through it before just getting ultra bored and logging off. LOL I actually at one point tried to do a double tap dodge move in wow……it didnt work.
GW2 is off to a great start so far. I also get the feeling that the devs actually care about our gaming experience which is a big plus in my book.
I like how the social aspect it the developers fault. Like they have to go out and introduce you to their friends… spark the conversation for you. I will bet, with 100% certainty, that those complaining about a lack of community or socialization, don’t say a thing in chat. Don’t say “Hi!” to those passing by. Don’t engage in any conversation at all.
The funniest part of all is that even in their so-called dream land MMO where everyone says there is all this socialization… there’s none at all unless someone speaks to someone else… and not just to rant… but actually talk as friends.
You can spend 90% of your day on your phone, on facebook, in email, chatting it up about absolutely nothing… you get into game and expect everyone else to do the talking for you. The developer’s can’t prod you into making friends. You have to do that. It’s an epic challenge… one that few ever even try to attempt.
Ok I can see where you are coming from, but the game just does not seemed designed for that kind of interaction. I rarely see actual groups of players out doing things. Mostly it is the lone wolf going from heart to heart and just getting xp. Pretty much the only chat bubbles I see are the ones where someone is thanking them for helping with a rez. Nobody sticks around a questing area enough to actually strike up a conversation.
I have actually tried getting a group started with others on the early levels and the response was either a complete snub and they run off, or “whats the point in grouping”. Im not asking for anyone to do the talking for me. Obviously there is no point in it.
I like the game, but it is by far not my favorite MMO. I think some of the ideas are great and progressive, but in the end its just the same old thing. Im not getting a great vibe from the social aspect either. You see some chatter in the chat window, but as far as gameplay, it just seems like its every man for himself. I wish there were more sense of community other than “Oooh there is an orange circle over there…..gotta run over and spam my abilities!!!”
The combat…..where to begin. Getting one shotted and having to do the downed combat thing is pointless. As soon as you are up, and throw on your heal….BOOM you are down again. Whats the point? A plate wearing warrior should not get downed in 2 hits. He should be able to stand his ground and fight without having to circle strafe in order to stay alive. You should not fear more than one mob around you.
Mob spawning…….AAAAGGGG! Why is it that you will kill something, bend down to get the loot, and sometimes the mob respawns instantly.
Ill keep playing for a while. Its not like Im having to pay for it. (thanks for that by the way ArenaNet). I just dont see how this can end up being a long term game for players.
Three words……City of Heroes. Best character creator ever….period.
I play an Asura and hate the hairstyles. Obviously a lot more do too, because you see a LOT of bald yoda things running around. I think there should be more choices for skin markings also. Its like there is the spotty one, the one with stripes on your head, and then the rest are just a variation of the same blotchy look on the face. They just don’t vary enough to be unique.
