SAB is dying...

The lackluster SAB release compared to the first has little to do with SAB. I really really REALLY hope the higher ups don’t blame the poor reception to difficulty as the SOLE reason SAB has had less numbers than before. Because I really feel the core reason is ascended weapons.

When I first heard they were releasing SAB I was ecstatic. I was like yeah I’m going to explore that place to death. I loved running SAB world 1. My friends and I spent hours trying to find all the secret rooms and baubles.

Then I heard about ascended weapons. Then I heard about the INSANE GRIND that would be required for ascended weapons. And I thought wow are the devs of Anet high? You release the most intensive grind for gear in this game to date at the same time you rerelease a game mode that takes players out of the game making it impossible for them to work towards this grind?

So players are forced with a choice. Play a side game that they know now will come back in intervals or start the crazy grind for the new shiny so they stay competitive. Well guess what OF COURSE most players will choose to work on their ascended instead. They might glance at SAB once or twice but the core gameplay this month will be grind grind grind those champs, chest events, and jps. Grind away.

This is a rather impassioned post but I felt so bad reading Josh’s blog. He seems to have taken the problems with SAB release to heart. Which is good there were issues with difficulty and pacing but I really hope he doesn’t feel like he has failed his players or he has failed his company because he is not the only one to blame.

Before I saw SAB before I heard it’s difficulty before any of that. I knew like it was a fact that SAB would not be played much by the playerbase because Anet screwed it over with ascended release. I really hope the higher ups see that as well and don’t just fully blame the SAB difficulty reaction as the cause and therefore do something so pig headed on future releases. Please Anet read this and recognize this mistake as well. Please.

for the most part my experiences in the arenas has been pleasant other than my own frustrations at dying. Only on 1 occasion did I not get a rez. Outside of that those I’ve shared an arena with will rez regularly, politely wait if needed/asked, and even chat it up about various encounters/builds that they are working on. But it feels fairly evenly split between farmers and those still working on bosses for the first time.

While, we have actually never seen what the 6 gods looked like.
We only saw their avatars or statues created by humans in GW1, the real gods would be new content.

Things like that is why I feel the abaddon fractal has no hope of living up to the hype. Keeping something to the players imagination allows it to be as epic as the player wants. Once you place the gods in game rather than statues and avatars, I just see them instantly becoming less cool.

I understand why people want it though and I have no problems with them voting for Evon. I have many friends and guildmates doing just that. But I’ll be voting for Kiel. To each their own.

I run fractals on a regular basis and I played GW1. I have no interest in the abaddon fractal. I understand why others are but I just don’t.

I’d rather go for the new one of infinite possibilities than the classic gw1 one that will more than likely never be capable of living up to the magnitude of hype everyone is placing on it.

Has anyone gotten gold on any tier? I’ve tried to farm tier 2 a number of times. The gold condition says to kill 50. My highest total was 57 but they still gave me silver for it. :/

Pre patch I was able to solo this on my warrior. Post patch not so much. A friend and I spent a lot of time trying various set ups to find a way to duo it. He found an old guide on how to 2 man it with thief warrior. This guide still works post patch. It involved the thief handling the right plunderer that first spawns at 5:30 with the warrior dealing with the other 2. It took us a few hours to get it down but we were able to beat it.

Our conclusion. You need a thief. We tried lots of combos with guard, mesmer, ranger, warriorx2. None of these seemed to work. But with a thief it worked. Still kitten hard though.

Oh and neither of us are built zerker. We had to rely on a lot of cc to get the plunderers down. I (warrior) used Longbow with axe/mace and killed the plunderers on the approach back. Open with longbow (with extended range) pop immobilize, blow all my cooldowns, immediately switch weaps so I could slow the plunderer with axe 3. Wail on them with axe if they got to the portal I’d knock them down with mace 5 before they started the animation. Then if I needed extra burst I’d use my saved up adrenaline ability for the kill.

My build of choice is 30 0 20 20 0 (not exactly a build tailor made for this encounter). and my gear is a mix of some zerker but mostly ptv gear. Yep PTV gear. So yeah my dps is something left to be desired but with the strat above, I still could take out the plunderers in a 2 man by myself.

Double tap dodging?

I find in most situations I only successfully dodge when I use double tap. I move with the mouse so hitting a direction with the dodge button is insanely clunky and awkward feeling for me. Doubletap works like a charm though.

The grind wouldn’t feel so bad if the point system made any sense at all.

If I win a match I usually end up with somewhere between 70-90 points. if I almost win a match being the second or third one last to die, I’ll usually get 20-30 points (from collecting items and a handful of player kills). If I intentionally die early so I can be a ghost right at the beginning, I’ll be able to easily collect a ton of blue dots so I can go to town on the living and get 50-60 points.

The achievement says go out and get points. From how it’s laid out above the best thing to do is to intentionally lose. This will get you the most points consistently. Especially when who wins rarely depends on skill and usually depends on who among the remaining few have been found by the ghosty masses.

If I felt like I naturally got the point achievement by legitimately playing the game then it would be fun. But instead it’s set up like this so it feels really lame and sours the game for me.

doesn’t bother me in the slightest. but I have the name ‘Karin’. It is not remotely uncommon when I email someone that doesn’t know me personally and I sign the email ‘Karin’ that I get a response that says ‘Hello Karen’. It honestly happens more often than the name begin spelled correctly. And in theory they had just read it so you’d think they’d remember the spelling for those 30 seconds.

Many people can type pretty fast and are only thinking of the words not the spelling and are relying on muscle memory to a degree as they type things out. Not everyone meticulously spell checks before they hit the send button. Misspelling proper names is going to happen a lot especially if it’s a name they aren’t very familiar with.

When I see the ‘Hello Karen’ I just chuckle a bit and move on.

Wintersday's over, couldn't get my minipets

I think this is what happened. Anet did the halloween skins out of the rng boxes. To keep them with a certain level or rarity the drop rate was kitten poor. This kitten off a lot of people. I believe and I’m only guessing this new box system was supposed to accommodate that complaint. The idea being we will dramatic increase the 0.00001% drop rate to 10%.

But the danger of doing that is you have a global TP so if a large number of people are opening these boxes with the high drop rate of 10% you’ll end up with a flooding of duplicates on the market which would make their gold price drop like a rock (like with the toy skins) making the purchase of rng boxes silly.

So to prevent that potential issue they figured they’d make the pets account bound. But this new system for holiday event rng items was a bazillion times worse than with the halloween skins.

honestly the account bound system wouldn’t have been that bad if they had A) more mystic forge recipies to convert duplicates and/or pet parts to the other 3 green pets. Maybe use the other 2 to get the 3rd. and B ) better consolation prizes when you didn’t get a pet. Like maybe a pet part (glue stuffing cogs).

Another fixer would have been a token system. Each time you open a chest you get a token and you can use those tokens to buy the pets from a vender (like how the claim tickets worked) . That way if you are lucky and get pets in x boxes good for you but anet caps the number of fails you have to endure before you get the pet by default at say like 25.

Hi everyone,

The statistics reported on the wiki pages for the Wintersday Mystery Box drop rates are incorrect, due to the method being used for calculating them. Some of our item packages use more than one loot table to determine what you get from opening them. Whenever you open a Wintersday Mystery Box, it randomly drops items selected from 2 tables, each having specific items and their own drop rates.

We’ve seen people mention the low drop rates of Foostivoo from Wintersday Mystery Box and would like to remind people that the primary way to obtain this miniature is from the Mystic Forge, by combining other minis (wiki link).

I am and I believe most are aware there are 2 loot tables. 1 table is to determine the number of presents you get (the first column of the wiki). The second table determines what “cash shop” item you get. I can’t double check it now but when I first saw this thread I remember checking the op’s numbers to see if he/she accidentally included the presents and he/she did not.

The op’s numbers were based on the second loot table and were mostly accurate except for the fact that some items come in groups of two. This is easily adjusted. The wiki drop rate page is not set up well but the data is still data that can be used to get a decent rough idea of the drop rates of special items.

It still appears that common items drop ~85% of the time and pets ~10% of the time. give or take a few percentage points.

Hello OP,

Thanks for the post if you read this there is a slight error in your otherwise awesome calculations. I too have been watching the wiki drop rate page. One thing to note when you get a tonic or the mortars, these will almost always come in groups of 2. So those items have inflated numbers on the drop rate page. If you halve the mortar and tonic numbers the chance of getting a pet is roughly 11% instead of the 7% you used.

I’d guess that the pets are more likely set to a 10% drop rate. If I understand your calculations correctly, this would adjust the total to 4000 gems or $50. Which is still a lot to be sure
