I used to love the dungeons. Now? Not so much. I’m not good enough to solo them.

Old enough to remember when I thought my Intellivision was the greatest thing since sliced bread! Got hooked on RPGs with Ultima Underworld (next time you young whipper snappers feel like spouting off about how terrible GW2 is, watch a youtube video of Ultima Underworld and count your blessings….. and get off my lawn)

Seeking advice for casual PvE ele build

Wow! Thanks everyone for the contributions to this topic. It’s fascinating reading and I love hearing different perspectives on the optimal build for me. I’d like to hear opinions on something I stumbled upon last night while researching. I never knew this rune existed. It’s the superior rune of exuberance. Vitality being converted to precision, healing power, and power (7% of total vitality to power). I currently have soldier armor and am happy with it so I am intrigued as to what this rune would do with the high vitality build I currently have. Thoughts?

Thanks for the response and advice! That’s exactly the sort of thing I was looking for. I went to the TP to check on prices (not really into crafting) and it doesn’t list celestial gear. If that isn’t an option, is there anything else that might be close to that build that you could recommend?

I’m not exactly the most highly skilled ele in the world and rarely venture into WvW and only PvP on a handful of occasions. I’m perfectly content to roam around Tyria doing random stuff (working on word completion at the moment) and have only recently started doing fractals. I love playing mage in any RPG. I think it’s due to my affection for AOE type stuff.

Anyway, long story short, I know all the advice is to create a berserker build (damage over defense, basically) and I get that, but I it doesn’t fit my style because I’m not that good at dodging and staying alive (I’m at level 80). I currently have all my points in vitality, power, and toughness, but that leaves my critical hit chance somewhere in the neighborhood of 10%. What I really want is a balanced build that gives me decent health, maybe somewhere around 18k, and at the same time decent dps. I know I could use the calculator thing but at the risk of sounding lazy I’m hoping someone could give me an example of a good all round balanced build (armor, amulets, etc).

Also, should I bother stacking might? I’m almost always playing solo and I wonder if it’s worth it to just stack might for myself. Appreciate any and all advice!

Best gaming laptop to play GW2 for 1000$?

Mederic, I was in the exact same spot as you a year ago. I wanted a gaming laptop primarily for GW2 and also for my fairly extensive steam library of games. I spent weeks researching what was out there and at the end of the day ended up getting this.

ASUS ROG 17.3" GL771JM-DH71 Gaming Laptop w/ NVIDIA GeForce GTX860M 2GB GDDR5 and Optimus Technology, 1TB Hard Drive and 12GB RAM.

Paid $1,036 for it from Amazon. So one year later would I buy it again? Absolutely without reservation. The display is spectacular, it is so quiet you don’t even know it’s running, and I love the keyboard (backlighting is so nice). I’m sure the Leveno is a great product and I seriously considered it but all I can do is tell you about my experience. Oh, and it runs GW2 without breaking a sweat, not to mention everything else I’ve thrown at it.

If you just want to 1-2 spam with a fire staff ele, then I don’t think it’s going to work for you. Ele is all about switching attunements. Don’t get me wrong – I put 6 trait points into fire because it’s what works best for my play style, but in order to be effective I have to use all the attunements. That’s why I love my hardware setupn (MMO mouse and G-13). It allows me to switch without having to think about it. I can drop all 20 skills in about 10 seconds, but it’s more complicated than that because you want to hit your go-to skills just as soon as they finish their cooldown. I can’t imagine another class that is as fun or as flexible as an ele.

I love playing as an ele – such a fun class. It was frustrating at first but after purchasing a Logitech MMO mouse and the G13, it made life soooo much better. Why? Because you will be constantly changing the four attunements and dropping all five skills in each one, not to mention the higher level skills. Your fingers will be busy, but you’ll love it!

Sorrow's Embrace Path 2: Infinite Respawn

Yep – I can vouch for that. Just tried a run there (May 2) and infinite respawns. Could have handled it except the douchbag NPC we had to keep alive keeps running away from where he’s supposed to go and instead attacks the mobs. Tried for nearly an hour with a great group of guys but finally gave up. Soooo frustrating.

In the process of completing the entire map with my ele, and so after doing the Tribulation Rift vista in Silverpeak Mountains (the one with the scaffolding tower near the artillery barrages), I decided to do I bit of wandering. After a lot of poking around I found a path that I’m certain was never intended to be found. I was able to get to the top of the mountains high above the vista and reached places where the mountains just stopped and places I could walk inside of the mountains. It was a pretty cool experience and made me think: What other places in the game world have people stumbled upon that weren’t really meant to explored? I’m sure I’m not the first person to find this cool little nugget of the world, but wanted to share……

Orr is a chore

Chris.8206

Wow! I never anticipated that my original post would garner so many responses – thank you to each and every one who contributed. Looking through what many of you wrote, I realize that I should have better articulated what it is that is frustrating me with Orr…..

It isn’t so much the difficulty of it as it is the long slog back to where I want to fight after dying due to the contested waypoints. Yes, if I was more highly skilled as some of you obviously are, I could solo this area and dying wouldn’t be an issue, hence contested waypoints (and the dearth of people playing in Orr) would be a moot point. Because I’m not as good as many of you are, I die. When I die, I have to respawn at a waypoint far away. I appreciate the fact that it is meant to be difficult, as do I appreciate the fact that this is an MMO and ideally one can rely on help for the group events. But because the waypoints are contested, and because the vast majority of high level players seem to be hanging out in other areas, it just gets to be a chore trying to complete this area. I know the obvious answer is “you suck – get better and stop complaining”, and I am getting better with time and the beautiful thing about this game (and being an ele in particular) is the incredible depth and breadth of how one can approach playing it.

Reading the responses here is going to make me redouble my efforts to get better, solicit help from my guild mates, experiment with different builds, and be more patient with my approach. Thank you once again for the responses – much appreciated!

I’m using knights exalted armor with superior rune of earth for toughness, but you are right about the food – I haven’t tried using that. Even if I did all that though, some of those bosses are pretty tough and I doubt that I can solo them. I did read about the new servers so I hope that helps.

Pardon the bad rhyming ;-)

So I’m at level 80 with my first build, an elementalist. Up until now the game has been captivating – one that has truly exceeded my expectations. Up until now, that is…..

I’m battling my way through Orr and the contested waypoints are killing me. I end up attempting a lot of events on my own or with just one other player as the place seems to be deserted, and if and when I die, I have to go to a waypoint that is clear on the other end of the map because all the others are contested. I’m in a well populated server but I swear there are way more people at the lowest level maps than the highest ones, hence my problem at completing group events. I doubt I will complete this area as an elementalist unless I can hook up with a group of players attempting to do what I’m doing, but for whatever reason this has been the most uncooperative area I’ve experienced so far. I’ve been down and people will run right by me without blinking an eye. Or I’ll ask for help with an event and am ignored. Frustrating…..

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Any suggestions on what I can do?

One last question: Do I need ascended gear in order to survive in WvW? And by surviving I guess I mean will I be able to contribute without always having to fear for my life?

One piece? Seriously? Lol….. I have almost 200 hundred hours in the game and have honestly loved every second of it, and I play it just to have fun, not to farm for gold or anything like that. Having said that, it is a little disappointing that after all that time I only have 11 gold to show for it. I collect everything I can and deposit it the bank, and have dabbled in crafting but it’s kind of confusing and I don’t really see the point in it. I just want to be able to go into WvW with some decent gear which is why I’ll probably just spend real money for gems to turn into gold.

Thank you everyone for your help – I think this forum is one of the better ones I’ve been on and it reflects the players I’ve met while exploring. Can’t count the number of times people much better than myself have helped me out of sticky situations or helped me to achieve a skill point or complete an event. What a cool game and a fun place to hang out! And I couldn’t figure out what the hell was going on with my character today but then read that they do weird stuff on April 1st. Too kitten funny!

Excellent! Exactly the sort of advice I was hoping to get. Taking into account that I really am quite clueless about how the whole armor/weapon upgrading works, let’s say I hit level 80 and decide to get a complete set of celestial armor from the trading post. Do I just buy regular armor and upgrade it using items, or do I buy it already upgraded? If I have to upgrade it, what do I buy to do it with? Same thing with my staff….. I want to get a powerful staff, so is there a specific one I should buy or do I just buy a random one and then upgrade it? I’m sure these are stupid questions but honestly, I’ve never played an RPG before, and GW2 has overwhelmed me on more than one occasion, but I keep slogging along figuring that eventually I’ll understand the nuances this game has to offer. Thanks for the help!

Chris.8206

So here’s the lowdown….. I’m a flight simmer/wargamer who couldn’t tell an MMO from an RPG, but for whatever reason have really fallen for GW2. About 50% of what I read in these forums goes straight over my head, but after several months of playing this game I’ve slowly but surely been getting a hang of things. My question follows:

I’m a level 70 elementalist and primarily use staff. When I hit 80 I’d like to have a decent, all around build so that I can began to explore WvW. How much gold would I need to buy the gear I need to be competitive? I’m talking staff, armor, etc. Can anyone provide me with a list of recommendations? I plan on going to the trading post to buy all the stuff I need rather than crafting it and don’t mind spending real money for gems to turn into gold. My play style is to hang back and drop meteor showers, healing rain, that sort of thing. I know my limitations and over time will try to expand how I play but for right now that’s what I’m most comfortable with. Thanks in advance.

Thanks guys for the advice – I really do appreciate it. A lot of what I read on these forums goes right over my head because I don’t have the vocabulary down or understand the basics yet, but I totally get what you are saying and I’ll take your advice to heart. I’m not going to let this mission stop me and will come back to it after I get some better equipment and dagger or something.

I’m new to MMO’s – this is my first one and have been enjoying my experience until now. I’m supposed to kill this Doc Howler person and the best I can do is to take him down to about half health before I die. I’ve probably done this mission about 20 times and have never gotten close to killing him. I’m at level 13. Any hints or suggestions? My elementalist has a pretty decent staff and I try to use all the attunements and have a skill that gets rid of the poison he shoots at me, but no matter what I do I die. So frustrated…..

I’ve never played this sort of game before but am really enjoying my experience so far. I decided to try the elementalist profession but it’s hard for me, even though I love the casting of spells.

First question: How do I get the signet of air? I’m at level 10 and I want to be able to walk around faster. I see that signet of fire is available on my skill page but not signet of air. I was fighting with another elementalist and saw that she had the signet so I know it must be available. I am a complete rookie and no explanation can be too simple for me. hint hint.

Second question: Just read about traits and how I have to go to an elementalist trainer to learn them, and I know that they have a book symbol above them, but I’ve been all over the place and still can’t find one.

I’ve googled these questions but everything I’ve read is way over my head – like it assumes I already know all of these basic questions….
