It is fairly clear that PvP in gw2 was kind of an afterthought, so we just got lumbered with the very boring and repetitive PvP we have now.

I feel that pvp is out of whack and there needs to be some new pvp match types, but to say that pvp is an afterthought is a bit silly.

GW2’s stated goal for longevity has been esport PVP.

Ahh, if it isn’t captain obvious.

Every single patch will lean very heavily towards PvE, because 95% of the population enjoy PvE more then PvP….Anet’s overall care about PvP is very low.

You sound like a tool, and I’m 95% sure you made up that statistic.

The Haste Skill

The drawbacks are often pretty tame compared to the benefits. There are only a few classes that can really dish out the hurt that quickly (hb warrior, thief)

Rangers with qz can deal some substantial damage, but it is quite visible and you can avoid it. To me, quickness just doesn’t seem to fit in the game. You pick all these utility skills and balance your gear/runes to operate a certain way, then another player blows you up in mere seconds.

How to troll thieves

Corebot.2701

This will probably only work on deathblossom thieves.
The ones who CnD + Mug + BS will only take ~300 per hit, meaning you’ll do 900 damage to them and even with all your armor/defenses you’ll take ~10k

Against a deathblossom thief it’s pretty good stuff though.

Ele Patch Notes

Corebot.2701

And surprise surprise, my guardian deals more aoe dps on auto attack with full exotic cleric than my ele does with semi berserker/rampager and only 2 pieces of sapphire items with fireballs ever will.

Staff dps still useless in spvp and melee range buffed forcing players into melee even more than before, for you D/D users this might be excelent, for us Elementalist purists who came from GW1 and other games that played mages this is not only meaningless to us but also clearly shows that A-Net is forcing the class in the way its not meant to be played.

So your concept of clear buff, is clearly nothing for us, except making us consider D/D even more.

As for downed state, its trully the only buff that actually affects the entire class.

You are really doing it wrong if you think a staff ele is useless in pvp. spvp, tpvp or wvw, staff ele’s are something that you simply must deal with immediately or they’re going to rip a team apart.

Class Selection Advice?

Corebot.2701

Rickshaw is a confused and angry gamer. Thieves in PVP are under a lot of fire right now because of their mechanics and capacity for really easy, really high hits that are tough to avoid (due to no stealth detection). In pve, nobody cares because there are no roles to fill and no real competitive areas.

For PVE though, I’ll give you some info

Ranger: super effective. if you want to be at max efficiency, you’ll use a shortbow and bear (or tankish) pet. This, imo, is incredibly tough but mega boring. Lots of autoattacks in your future. PVP: some really, really good rangers out there. Most are not. They can get tons of glory though with the current scoring setup. Get piercing arrows and spam your shortbow.

Ele: Hard to use this class. Really rewarding if you’re good at it, really punishing if you’re not. At mid levels you can summon a lightning hammer which makes you lol @ PVE content most of the time. Very powerful class but, again, if you’re not using it will it will punish you. PVP: Really strong bunker. Great aoe dps, great team support. Fast travel/roamer. Can be great in 1v1 or group fights, but most times cant be good at both.

Guardian: Really resilient, mid-high dps, lots of utility. Pretty bad ranged attacks (which are really important for dungeons/champs). Great sustain, ehh crowd control. Pretty good at DE’s though w/ a staff, you can tag everything while buffing your allies. PVP: Great bunkers, good group AOE dpser, can change the tide of a battle w/ some key skills/abilities. if traited properly, can be a great team healer.

Warrior: High dps, high armor, high hp. Can do aoe ranged (bow) single target ranged (rifle) high melee damage, moderate survivability. They dont survive like a guardian by taking, healing, mitigating damage. They survive by just having lots of armor/hp and killing stuff first, then regen between fights. Probably 2nd to ranger in leveling speed, imo. PVP: Good controller/support class with a hammer. Rifle is great in a group for picking off glassy classes. Redonk burst w/ greatsword, but you sacrifice a lot to get it.

Necros: I’ve seen some really solid pve necros. Personally, I think they’re boring, but others love them. Lots of AOE, lots of utility, lots of pets if you choose. PVP: Great in groups, I’ve seen some pretty tough 1v1 necros, but most times they’re best suited in a group. Good at passing out conditions.

No class, whatever spec, should be able to hit just about anyone with 10k+ in 1 hit. It’s just absurd.

I agree.

Please nerf Warriors, Guardians, Elementalists, Engineers, Rangers, Mesmers and Necromancers.

As a Thief with 19k HP and 2100+ Toughness, these classes burst me down WAY too fast. I’m talking about less than 3 seconds time. What they trade off for the ability to kill me in such a quick fashion is irrelevant.

The only viable builds that should be allowed in PvP are Bunker builds.

Please make this happen. Thank you.

A guardian killed you with 19k HP in 3 seconds.

Rly.

Did he have a cape and xray vision too?

And you want to nerf rangers?? Seriously?? There are a few bad mofo rangers out there that know what they’re doing but overall I think they’re probably the LEAST qq’d about class in gw2.

I see a lot of wildly exaggerated claims flying around about thief damage.. whenever someone actually tests it and gets hard numbers, the damage is like 3x lower than what people claim they get killed by.

There are plenty of screenshots showing the high end of thief damage at round 15k, and it is average to hit for 10k.

Higher than 10k is usually due to superior bloodlust sigil which should be nerfed. It just snowballs too quickly.

I call shenanigans here, 250 power is not the root cause of a thief and their huge numbers.

Best overall/fastest PVE solo class

I’d say warriors are probably the most efficient. Perma run speed with warhorn + signet, strong AOE with GS, the option to fight at range for DE’s or boss fights. Long bow is great for tagging stuff (3 aoe’s/penetrating) and rifle penetrates if traited.

Guardians are very steady, almost as fast as a warrior, but if things go bad they can recover better IMO.

Rangers are non stop chain killers and I was able to solo vets that were +4ish levels for skill points, etc. and also managed to solo a few champs for kicks. Not worth it for xp, but still fun.

I’m genuinely surprised to see so many warrior QQ threads.

Generally you see 2 warriors:
bulls>quickness>HB
or
Hammer/xyz control builds.

You’re not being lit up fast enough with a hammer build to cry nerf, and once a warrior blows his load on HB, he basically sucks until the cooldowns are back.

This is not the case with a thief. I agree that thieves SHOULD hit hard and be elusive. I have absolutely no problem being outplayed by a thief, thats part of pvp. What sucks about them is they attack from stealth, if you don’t die they re-stealth and try again. If that fails, they pop thieves guild and they run away. Too much cannon, not enough glass.

I don’t know why people think warrior needs Enrage to drop people, I don’t even need that to drop people with hunderd blades and axe/shield. Warrior has the best burst on demand and the best high sustained damage of any profession. They sacrafise mobility for that.

I couldnt disagree more. Axe has great burst with F1 with a small leap and somewhat of a tether so you can hit mobile opponents, and GS has great burst with HB but ONLY if you get someone to stay still. Any decent player will simply roll, knockdown, or walk out of your regular-speed HB.

In fact, I find a GS warrior to be one of the most mobile classes with 2 charges and an eluding whirl attack, especially if paired with an axe/warhorn to remove snares. I think that without frenzy to speed up that burst or at least a root to hold them in place, you’re just swinging away while self rooting and your opponent is target swapping or plinking at you from range.

What I find really funny is that ANet went on about how they wanted balance, yet they somehow let stuff like assassin signet + backstab into the game, what kind of useless testing did they do before release?

Maybe the envisioned people working together? Ie:peeling the thief or using the revive spells given?

I can agree with some of this, but pulling a thief to you doesn’t fix the fact that the thief can stealth and reacquire the target, or just stealth and blow you up.

Too much control + too many escapes + powerful cooldowns = frustrating pvp for everyone who is not that class. This is why people are up in arms about mesmers and thieves, they are put together in a better way than other classes.

I sincerely hope they tone DOWN the outliers rather than buffing everyone else up to their levels. I’d hate to see a guardian with a 12k whirling blade or an ele with 10k dragon’s tooth.

This is not a counter. First answer and it had to be ignorant. Do you people even read?
I’m not complaining because there’s a counter, I’m complaining because it is automatic, without requiring skill from part of the player.
Counter is when a Ranger shoots 100 arrows at your direction and you BLOCK them.
Counter is when a Warrior charges and you ROLL OVER.
etc.
Counter can’t and shouldn’t be something that COUNTERS an attack automatically.

Use my 100 blades wisely? I’m sure I’m someone that uses it pretty well.
Read again and you will understand that doesn’t matter how well you do it, you just won’t be able to hit them anyway.

Charge>Quickness>HB is a gs warrior’s kill. The mesmer skill you pointed out COUNTERS the charge.

Rolling is not countering a warrior. Rolling is evading his power attack. Counters are using your skills/abilities to nullify someone else’s strength, ie flipping conditions into boons (guardian @ necro, for example) or flipping boons into conditions (necro @ guardian), or even reflecting ranged attacks (quickening zephyr ranger @ shield warrior w/ reflect).

I think we all get frustrated at mesmers from time to time, but honestly as someone who plays a warrior and a guardian in pvp, I think GS warriors are second only to d/d thieves in the “I just don’t want to hear you QQ” category, because you are mostly just driving around throwing quickness at people and hoping they die.

I agree that Moa is super powerful, and where most other classes have some alright elites, that one is just redonk in small scale fights. I like the skill (not a mesmer, just think its a nice ability) but I’d like to see it stay as powerful, perhaps a shorter duration. Cooldown isnt that crucial though, because you can only use most utilities or elites once per fight, so even if the cooldown was tripled, if you get Moa’d you’re still in trouble.

Thieves are a totally different animal. Their damage is pretty amazing and the risk is significantly lower due to a lack of stealth detection in GW2. I don’t feel like I’m outplayed when my warrior/guardian/elem is dropped by a 12k backstab + 8k heartseeker in 2 immediate button pushes, I feel like I happened to be the one that was standing in front of the bus. Not much you can do now though, but I think most people who are not thieves will agree that they are a bit out of touch with their burst, and how little they have to give up for it.

The guardian you showed didn’t survive a 1v3 with ‘no problem’ as you described, he/she held you guys off for 8 seconds, then was assisted by 2 team mates. I play a guardian and I can say that yes, the class’s mechanics allow me to comfortably 1v1 with any other class, but you’ll never find a bunker guardian (especially post retal nerfs) that can take a 1v3 and win unless the other 3 are not doing their jobs correctly.

Meditation heals are really strong though, I’m surprised at how strong they are atm, with no +heal gear I can med-med-med-heal for ~15k.

More evidence: see trebuchet pic in this thread. Did he help? Yes absolutely. Did he get 400 points because he was really productive and changed the game? Nope, he just spammed aoe, tagged a ton of people.

Those kills gave his team what, 50 points? The other 450 came from people capping, holding and working as a team. Meanwhile, he got 400 glory and they got a fraction. You will never, ever get 400 glory effectively roaming, capping, defending.

Corebot.2701

Skills
6 – I like the signet to heal. The bonus condition removal is nice, and the passive stacks with the trait, removing 2 per 10 seconds or 1 per 5, depending on how you look at it.
7/8/9 – Meditations heal quite well in this build (slightly better w/ Divinity than with Ogre), so I try to use them as often as possible (when it’s a smart move to do so).
-Judge’s is a no brainer, with the traited bonus damage to burning foes, stun break, knockdown removal, teleport, aoe damage AND a heal it’s just a bad kitten button to push.
-Smite is a moderately hard-hitting button. It does decent AOE damage, good damage w/ a condition. If you’re fighting a warrior or especially a ranger, this is a good choice too, as it will remove 1-25 stacks of bleed as one condition. Pretty potent. Also heals you as it is a meditation. This is also a useful ability if you want to put some pressure on a stealth thief or a bunch of mesmer adds on you.
-Save yourselves is a very strong buff as it offers basically every boon you can think of. It can get you in trouble if you have no other support around and you use it in a group fight, stealing everyone’s conditions and setting yourself up for an kitten beating. I use this at the onset of a fight and it makes you a nasty mofo for 12ish seconds. Alternatively, you can put in Contemplation of Purity which will make necros MUCH easier to deal with as they often give you 5+ boons (they are random, so sometimes you’ll get 3 stacks of something instead of 3 separate boons, for example) when you convert their conditions, and it heals you as it is a meditation.

0 – Because the tomes lost stability, they are pretty tough to pull off in the same game-changing fashion that they used to be. Not impossible, but tough. I have been using Renewed Focus recently and I really just don’t like it. Here is what I do, f1, f2, f3, 0. This gives you burning on next attack, might, a heal, regen, aegis, protection. Hitting 0 SHOULD make you invulnerable for 3 seconds but I have died about 200 times while using it. Sometimes is does work, and when it does it’s pretty nice because you have all those boons and your f’s are back and ready for action, but when you just hold still and float while your enemies kill you, thats just a sad, sad day.

Given the choices, I’d go with Tome of Courage if you dont like Renewed Focus, because that heal is disgusting if the other team doesnt CC you during the channel.

So, there are a lot of different ways to play a guardian, and this is just one. This method works for me as I play. I’m sure there are a ton of pro’s out there that can poke holes all over this. To them, I say, it’s all good. I don’t care if you don’t like it, because I do.

Here’s the build. Enjoy.

Corebot.2701

Hi all,

Been working on a guardian build for a while and thought I’d share. It does very well in small and large scale battles, can hold a group off for a decent amount of time (dont expect to kill them, but you can deny a cap or hold off for reinforcements), and serves very well as a roamer.

Weapons: scepter/shield and greatsword

The recent changes to GS are meh. This, to me, is a loss of survivability (symbol + whirl = cleanse conditions) since we can’t use our symbol as often. Retal was nice, but you can’t just sit in your symbols or you’re not a threat.

One thing to note for greatsword 5, use this too early. By that I mean, try this order for GS. 3-5-2 then carry on. What this will do is leap to them, throw your 5, then whirl on them. This can do lots of damage and give you 2 advantages that I rarely see other guards have when I fight them. #1 – there is a decent dot on 5 which is now ticking away on your opponent. #2 – That pull/knockdown/interrupt is ready when they start to heal or run.

This is invaluable and so many people just dont do it. Most guards that I fight just spam 5 till i’m at their feet. Almost 100% of the time they’ll go right to 2, so I’ll Judge’s to them (breaks the stun/knockdown from their 5, puts you on them, lights them on fire) then immediately roll away. Now they’ve blown their 5 pull, their interrupt, their dot, and their whirl and i’ve taken a fraction of the damage that I could have taken.

Scepter is SO UNDERVALUED. This thing does a ton of damage, but the orbs are stupidly slow. When I’m holding a node and someone is coming to try to take it, I 3-2-1 with scepter to bring them down a bit, then shield 5 when they get close. This will buy you ~7 or more seconds of them being out of the node, which a lot of time results in a cap. Scepter 2 is also pretty strong, even though I really don’t like it. When combined with 3, its great damage, but usually people move away or the randomness of the swirly derps that is shoots just flat out miss the target. Still, we have no choice in ranged and this thing does better than most give it credit.

Runes: divinity or ogre

For gear, I’m not in love with any particular set of runes. I use Divinity in the calc because its a great catch-all. Part of this MAY have been the bug (that I never noticed) that was fixed on 10-7 with regard to crit damage? Again, I never noticed it so it might not have been a big issue. 60 to all attributes and 10% crit is nice though. Ogre is a good set too for a more dps-focused guard, the rock dog is actually pretty nice and the raw dps is noticeable. Expect to lose a moderate chunk of HP though.

Sigils: Air, Hydromancy, Bloodlust, Blood

Air on a scepter is a good choice. The orbs are slow, but the attack is fast, so you have a lot of 30% chances floating around at any time. Scepter 2 can also proc this for some decent spike damage.

Bloodlust is just a good overall rune to have. It pairs very well with Ogre runes IMO since you’re more focused on killing than surviving, so getting the stacks is a nice addition. For those who do not know, this sigil does NOT give just 1 stack per kill as it does in PVE, it awards 5 per player kill. You get no stacks if the weapon is not being used when they die though, so keep that in mind if you’re weapon swapping. Using 2 bloodlusts usually gives you double the stacks for a kill, though sometimes it seems not to do this.

Hydromancy is a great sigil for this shield, here is my reasoning for that: I start every fight w/ scepter shield so I can control/bubble/protect/ranged dps as I’m running in. Once I’m on someone, I swap to greatsword to punish them in melee. Now, if things go badly, I can swap back to scepter shield which freezes them for 3 sec. I can now retreat, and hit them with scepter 3 once the freeze is up for ~6 seconds of retreating w/o them closing on me.

Blood is a sigil I hardly ever see other people use. It’s great in small scale fights if you’re a solo roamer or recapping nodes. It’s crap in zergs or in 1vMany battles, because the healing just doesn’t keep up with that kind of dps. For me, as a roamer and mostly solo player, it’s not a bad choice for tankier work. Usually pairs with divinity better than ogres due to extra perception.

I don’t see how anything you just said would not still apply if smart, team-focused play didn’t offer the same rewards as zerging?

Doing a ‘great job’ should be reflected on the scoreboard, imo.

Current Scoring = Poor PVP Decision Making

I usually pvp on a guardian, I play a greatsword / scepter + shield build and am a decent player (read: I am not a pro, a wannabe pro, or an elitist. I just like pvp).

The reason I play a guardian is because I like to play pvp in a way that allows my team to win, this means I cap and recap areas, res teammates, use utilities/healing abilities to win group battles. If everyone else bails on a node, I’ll guard it and keep it capped until the enemy zerg kills me.

The reason I say the current scoring system leads to poor decision making is because at the end of most games that my team wins, I have one of the lower scores. Keep in mind, this is with me winning almost every 1v1 that I find, capping and recapping nodes, and defending nodes for the team’s benefit. There are usually 3+ thieves on my team when I pug (just an observation, I really don’t care) and they usually make that familiar whoop-whoop-whoop sound as they heartseeker their little kitten off. They rarely cap, they rarely defend a node, they just zerg around.

Here’s what gets me: They (zerg, burst, glass cannons) usually have 3x my score and anyone else who is being a teamplayer.

The people who die all the time because they just zomgdps! around the battle feed the other team points. Those who cap and hold points do NOT feed the other team points. So the people who do not play ‘for the team’ get more points, more glory, more rank, etc. than the folks who actually play to win.

The easy decision is to just use a quickness/burst build, or an aoe spam build, and tag everything like in a DE for max glory, rather than play to win.

Why does having 3 people in a node not cap faster? this would make multi-capping a smart move.
Why does defending a node not grant points? this would make defense a smart move.
Why is there a bonus to points for being someone who stomps/attempts to stomp an enemy, rather than awarding the points to everyone who fought.
Why do support classes (looking at ele, guardian, engi, possibly necro) not get the same kill credit for keeping 5 people alive to win a battle, as the aoe spamming guys who just tag everyone or quickness+XYZ and pray?

Here’s the cherry on this silly cupcake of pvp foolishness: High scores apparently are license to troll everyone else.

Just making some observations. I like the pvp, i just don’t like the scoring.
