“That hardly seems bannable, but then so does buying a good item from a vendor for little karma.”
They banned a few thousand people that bought a few million items. All of those people purchase 300+ of those items. It’s not like they were stocking up on a lifetime of swords so that they could eat them when they went hungry or something.
So long as you aren’t AFK farming, I’m sure it won’t be a problem.

" Would you recommend this build just for PvP or for PvE too?"
Definitely good in PvE too. I think the only real limitation it faces is that if you’re grouping with another bleed build you will single-handedly drown them out when you’re in melee. The shouts are amazing group heals in dungeons and dynamic events, and the high toughness keeps you from getting one-shot while you jump in and stack as much as you can before jumping out.
I think the build is suboptimal in WvW though. You can’t stack rifle bleeds high enough in siege situations to kill anyone. I’d probably bring a longbow and hammer or mace to be more useful.
“Chauvinism” and “male chauvinism” are differing applications of the word. Although, in a modern sense, you often hear the word “chauvinist” directed at misogynists, as people have already pointed out, that isn’t the core definition of the word. The asura are certainly chauvinist in a racial sense.
They’re described on this site as “a race of evil geniuses hell-bent on world domination” and you can hear some asura NPCs make derogatory comments towards humans(they’re stupid and irrelevant), sylvari(naive and also lol salad jokes) and norn(they have bad hygiene) with fair frequency. They seem to respect the charr considerably more.
Of course, there’s also a lot of interpersonal variation among the asura, as you would expect to find in any sentient race. Perhaps even more – they are, after all, very sentient. Some asura are going to see the humans as friends, some as test subjects, some as inferior and worthless, and some as valuable tools. I know the asura vigil representative sees the other races as close comrades.
I love the Dumb quote so much.
I think my second favorite is the Asura on revive speech:
“Guess who’s back?!
… It’s me, by the way."
So socially awkward and adorable.
Now first off, I know this is a bit of a charged issue, and I just don’t want anyone assuming that I hate heterosexual people. I know they get a lot of bashing in the news and there’s a lot of moralistically religious people(Not all of them, mind you!) out there who have been violently persecuting them for about two thousand years now, but I think now that intolerance for heterosexuals is pretty much completely gone from society now(I mean, they have the religious freedom to get married in like 4 states now!) I think it’s time we talked about something earnestly.
Does heterosexuality in humans, asura and norn feel a little… forced? Unlike in all the homosexual sylvari relationships, where the intimacy is largely inferred, the heterosexual relationships in these races is stated rather loudly. Before my Asura was 10 he had taken place in ACTIVELY FACILITATING an open heterosexual relationship in their personal storyline – something I did not want to do and that really creeped me out. I ran into a half dozen hetereosexual NPCs that were vaguely flirtation towards one another. I remember seeing a dialogue string where two YOUNG hetereosexual asura(should we really be exposing our kids to this??) were about to go on a date(are they seriously teaching UNDERAGE KIDS to be SEXUALLY STRAIGHT? This is so wrong) and the boy’s father sent a robot after them that told them to ‘keep their hands where it could see them’. This has OBVIOUS graphic heterosexual connotations, and deeply offends me. Given that studies show that heterosexual parents are relatively bad for children, can we please just lay off all the blatant heterosexuality in this game?
Again, I do NOT hate heterosexual people(no really I have a straight friend!), but their presence really offends me and could you please keep it out of my fantasy game where I go to get AWAY from them. If you can’t do that at least make it a little more subtle because I mean seriously those people are gross and should be forcefully kept out of my sight.

The pistol is a deceptively good weapon. It does minor to moderate up-front damage, but it also stacks bleeds and poisons and blinds. Using a pistol and a shield will let you play defensive while you whittle your enemy down this way, while using two pistols will up your damage a bit more at the expense of utility. Grenades are actually similar to pistols – moderate up-front damage, solid bleeds and debilitation. If you like these two weapons, I would recommend looking up a condition damage build guide.
If you want a build that uses mainly rifle or pistol, there are a few of those as well. There’s toolbelt burst builds that do comically high burst damage at the expense of being easily countered and killed(think five-minute mages from WoW), and there are builds that focus on chugging potions and unloading pistols with conditions. Obviously, turret builds require you to spend a lot of time with your default weapons as well.
If you’re only in it for the guns, there are also dual-pistol rogues and rifle warriors, if you’re interested.
As for your WvW server, it should eventually get to the point where it is being matched with other similarly low rated worlds, so it will be even. If you really want to go find a higher WvW-rated server, I guess there’s nothing stopping you.
“+Healing is more efficient than power or condition damage. If you want to do damage with both, you have to split your stats up between them”
Oh god, I should stop reading here. Bring +1000 healing to a fight with an anything with +1000 power or +1000 condition damage and watch as you die almost as fast as you would have if you had no +healing at all. Even if you get a whole lot of +healing, that +120 health regen is going to jump up to an amazing(!!!) 250 regen. 1000 power, on the other hand, is going to turn a 1.5-2.5k hammer swing every second into a 3-5k hammer swing every second. Likewise, 1000 condition damage will turn 600 dps in bleeds and burning into 1200 dps. +healing is not very desirable, and that’s entirely okay, because this game isn’t supposed to have healing that can overwhelm anybody’s dps. That’s not the problem and it has absolutely nothing to do with anything anyway because we’re talking about how the engi does relative to other classes. If a warrior or guardian or ele stacked +healing like an engi stacked +healing they’d still laugh an engi out of any group in terms of both numbers and usefulness.
Everything you just listed is a way of doing something any of the other already discussed classes do only with lower numbers, more difficulty, and less overall effectiveness. Throwing potions? Tiny AoE, delay time, negligible buffs. Let’s compare throwing elixir B. You can give 1 stack of might OR a few seconds of retaliation OR a few seconds of swiftness or fury. “For Great Justice” on the other hand hits a 5x larger area, is instant, gives 3 stacks of might and fury, heals for 1.3k, and removes a condition – oh and, it doesn’t interrupt your attack. No contest.
Throwing elixir R? Turns one condition into a boon in a tiny area. “Shake it off!”? 5x the area, 1.3k healing, removes two conditions, breaks stun. All of this can be used instantly(unlike just about any of the abilities and combos you just listed), in a wide area(unlike 90% of the things you just listed) and does the same thing while not even forcing the caster to stop DPSing. I don’t even want to bring up what the guardian can do with their tools in comparison.
The engineer has a lot of tools, yes, I’m not debating that, I’ve never even tried to infer otherwise. However, other classes have these same tools and they’re much better.
(edited by Daemer.1605)
seriously, you can’t just look at a few skills and say they are better, because numberwhise they probably will be. Numberhwise Warriors and thiefs will eat me allive and yet im still able to kill them. Numbers mean nothing!
Numbers mean everything, assuming two players of equal skill.
Anecdotes mean nothing.
but i doubt the warriors are as versatile as engies. actualy i dont know at all
No, you don’t. A healing shout warrior can remove 4 conditions in an aoe every 20 seconds. So can guardians. Warriors can apply something like 7-9 stacks of might along with some fury to a group using self-combos and shouts and if they’re hammer/rifle they have a myriad of stuns and snares and knockbacks. The guardian is hands-down the best support and can lay down impassable walls and have a huge number of AoE buffs and heals and cleanses that probably dwarfs anyone else in the game.
I’m not saying engineers are completely insufficient, I am saying that they are inferior to other classes when they try to go support. I agree with Sin – making just one or two of their aoe heals more powerful and instant would make them much more competetive.
Naw. Guardians are a superb class with a lot of effective build options, but I love hammer CC builds, greatsword facerolling builds, sword condition builds, and shout-healing way too much to quit.
I know you can lay down a super elixir, mister Achmed. I covered that in my original post, remember? Also, 1400 of that elixir is a HoT which requires you to stand still. Go ahead, stand still for 10 seconds in any fight in PvP. Tell me how that works out for you. It won’t heal you for one tenth of the damage you took by standing still, at any rate.
And the AoE heal combos are nice, I’ll give you that. Is it enough to catch up with the burst heal deficit engineers have on warriors, guardians, and probably even elementalists? I am genuinely interested as I do not have hard numbers on combo heals.
Also, if it does surpass other classes in healing, does it surpass it enough to justify requiring all the effort? Warriors can heal for over 3k(with a .8 +healing coefficient) in a large aoe just by mashing their utility skills, and this is on a 20 second cooldown. I’m pretty sure the guardian heal is even better and only requires one button. Both these classes also capable of instantly removing 3-4 conditions in an AoE while healing, and again, I believe both these classes have access to blast abilities that can also heal – although warriors can’t heal blast combo with themselves, they can drop quite a few blast abilities between the bow, the hammer, and banners.
(edited by Daemer.1605)
Oh, and the turret aoe heal is absolutely on a one minute cooldown. The regen is on a 20 second cooldown, but I made it very explicit I was talking about instant heals. Reading comprehension is awesome!
I agree about making it stack in intensity. Bleeding stacks in intensity and can cause you to take over 3000 dps. Regen can make you heal for… what, 150hps? With that, you can almost recover from a single 8k warrior axe burst in, what, a minute? Big whoop.
Edit: Oh for raging out loud! The link won’t work and it deleted my last edit. Here’s the build:
Dual swords/rifle
30 arms with traits 3,7,8
10 arms with trait 5
30 tactics with 1,7,12
Mending, For Great Justice, Shake it Off, On My Mark, Signet of Rage. Full Sigils of superior earth and Runes of the Soldier with a rabid amulet and jewel.
I’ve been using this build for about a week now in PvP and a slightly modified version(which I’ll go over later) in PvE: gw2skills.net/editor/en/?fIAQNAscUngOk8YzDSBxEZABVALOPSipYJSPEjBMNA;TsAAzCpoyyklILbWuskZtqYUxsCA
I seriously can not recommend this build enough. Let’s go over what it can do for you in bullet point form, eh?
- A solid 23k health pool with an incredible 3k armor
-Can remove up to 7 conditions in a short time period and with a fairly low cooldown
-Can heal for about 9k every 25 seconds
-Offers a block ability that also reflects projectiles
-Bleeds that tick for 118 when self-buffed
-Can stack up to 3 bleeds with a single auto attack about 15% of the time. That is 354 dps for 7 seconds, and then 118 dps for five seconds after that, for a grand total of 3.35k including actual attack damage. Almost every attack with stack at least two bleeds, which is still 2.6k.
- Can stack up to 25 bleeds in about 5 seconds by using impale, riposte, two auto-attacks, and the burst skill. Almost all of those bleeds would be 7+ second bleeds. That’s just shy of 3k dps for 7 seconds, or 21k damage not including white damage, which would add another 1.5k or so. Oh, and most of this damage is AoE. Holy cow!
-Three immobilize abilities on fairly short cooldowns that also give you fury
-Almost as good at range as in melee
-Gives you completely unparalleled group dance-off leadership abilities, as you can shout, “On my mark – shake it – FOR GREAT JUSTICE!” before dropping some phat moves.
That sounds pretty sexy, right? Incredible sustained damage and incredible survivability, healing, and condition removal.
Here’s some tips to use this build effectively in PvP:
-Kite and LoS. The less condition removal your foe has, the less time you need to spend face-to-face with them. Once you’ve stacked up 10+ bleeds – which should take five seconds, tops, try and get out of range or out of sight for the remaining 5-10 seconds of your bleed duration. Use the sword 3 and rifle 2 to immobilize your foe and make this easier.
-Meter your condition removal. If you’re fighting a mesmer, bleed ranger, or another bloody shout warrior, don’t remove a stack of bleeding until it’s over 5 stacks and don’t remove confusion until it’s over 2.
-Against mesmers, LoSing is even more important. It will force their illusions to run at you. Dodge right as they come around the corner and laugh as you evade their entire mind wrack.
-If you can’t LoS a ranged enemy, put the pressure on. You have lots of immobilization abilities and a charge. Use them all to keep the enemy panicking and unable to bring their full artillery to bare. Or to bear, if they’re a ranger, I guess.
-If you’re going ranged against someone, try to open up with impale and then switch to rifle. The rifle has relatively slow bleed application and those extra 4-6 bleeds will matter.
-Remember that you can use your block ability on pulsing AoEs to get that easy riposte off. Also remember that you can reflect projectiles and laugh as a longbow ranger or pistol rogue unloads on themself.
-Learn when to use your shouts. You might want to save ‘For great justice!’ along with your sigil of rage for when you get a high bleed stack up on an enemy that is out of cleansing abilities in order to get that 105 tick bleed up to a 118 tick bleed. Other times, you’ll want to unload all your shouts at once in order to counter some rough burst you failed to dodge.
-Remember to use combo fields. If you can sword-charge through a fire field, you’ll be doing fire damage in addition to bleeds. That’ll take you from 3.35k dps to over 4k dps. As if you didn’t need nerfed already.
-You can drop “On my mark!” for “Fear me!” and try that out. It trades off frequency for quality. Remember that most cleansing abilities can’t be used while the enemy is fleeing, so that’s up to 12k damage you can keep the enemy from preventing. Tasty. “Fear me!” can also be used to save an ally’s life.
-Don’t use your downed 3 ability unless you have a good feeling about being able to use it effectively. It is often more productive to just die and come back faster than it is to take a couple potshots that your foe will recover from before the next fight.
And what’s more! You can convert this guide into an even more effective PvE build with just a couple changes! First, drop the runes of the soldier and replace them with runes of the undead. Because why not bring those 118 ticks to 130+? You can replace one of your shouts with the banner that gives you malice if you hate friendship, but the AoE heals are just so good. You can also replace the 10 points in defense with 10 points in tactics for the 9% increased crit chance or 10 points in strength for the condition duration because 12 second bleeds clearly just aren’t enough.
Any questions, comments, criticisms?

Most of the engi group heals available are regeneration boons. For instance, the elixir gun and healing turret toolbelt skills, and the healing turret deployment skill, and healing elixir thrown effect. Aside from the medpack heals, which are quite nice but also exceedingly difficult to use effectively in most situtations(especially pvp), the only direct heals I can think of are the one-minute healing turret heal and the elixir gun 5, both of which are pretty small compared to guardian heals or even warrior shouts. As a comparison, between the healing turret and the super elixir from the elixir gun, it’s something like 2500 worth of base burst healing every minute(Although it’s closer to 5500 if you consider the super elixir’s ground heal, which, like medpacks, almost never sees a fraction of it’s full heal number), while traited warrior shouts are closer to 3300 base burst healing every 20 seconds, which is superior to engi heals even if your allies are somehow able to stand still in your ground heals and turret radius.. Those shouts also grant fury, might, and vulnerability while, if specced and runed for it, also offer comparable condition removal to what the engineer has in a much easier-to-deploy format. The same goes for the guardian.
Given that regeneration is a very slow heal, and when considered in combination with the engi’s overall lack of buffing skills, it leads to the engi being extremely subpar in the support role compared to an elementalist or warrior or especially a guardian. It’s cool that I can throw out a minute’s worth of aoe regen in a short period of time, but the majority of that is going to waste when both pve and pvp in this game are very spiky.
While I think it’s okay for the engi to not be the best support class, it seems counter-intuitive to be so terrible at it when we have so many different support abilities available.
What do you guys think? Are engineer support options sub-par? Do we even need better support abilities? Most engis I’ve seen are either bombs or condition elixir spec’d.
Is this a bug? I’ve fought a few thieves and mesmers who are invisible for the vast majority of a fight, and seem to keep attacking at full speed while stealthed. That can’t possibly be working as intended, right?
Literally every tournament I’ve been in has been a 4v5 from the start with one side straight up missing a person. What’s better, even though they’ve figured out a way to drop I can’t. Every time I try to leave, it warps me right back, like I’m stuck in some dark circle of hell, forced to sit in spawn for five minutes while the other team camps mine at the gate, because, you know, 4v5.
I can entirely understand not having drop penalties on normal SPvP matches but will you either make it easier to drop from tournaments or put penalties in for those who do. Tournaments have been nothing but frustration so far =\
